Huh.

E: So Hazou's uncompromising idealism doesnt seem to fall far from the tree.

OTOH: It looks like Hana will at best grudgingly work with Mari.

She ALSO dodged Kagome's traps. She is badass as hell.

TFW Mom is pissed we challenge Jonin to spars.

This update was going to be somewhat more merciful. Then I re-read the end of the previous chapter and realised that Keiko was the only one available to prevent the coming social trainwreck.

She dodged Kagome's traps what the actual fuck.

Is Mom right below Kakashi tier or something??

(Next morning, at breakfast: )

HAZOU: (enters, takes one look at MARI) Sage damnit, mum! Now I have to put sensei's brain back together again! Do you have any idea how long this took last time?! (drags MARI out of the kitchen muttering darkly under his breath)

HANA: ...huh?

'Kay. So.

@Velorien Did Hazou follow his mom downstairs and listen at the door like a good little rapscallion? :p
That would require him to anticipate that Mari wanted to hold up her departure. Also to beat Mari and Hana's Alertness.

If you want, you can add "opportunistic invasion of privacy as a default" to future plans.

Edit: Oh, I also had some separate evil in mind that didn't fit within this update because I thought the current structure was too good to disrupt. Maybe I should do a bonus interlude.

Oof, brutal. FWIW, I think this isn't all bad. People do benefit from periodically reflecting on whether they're being the person they want to be. But you do have to remember that you have limited capacities and various things to spend them on (such as keeping your family alive), and so not be too hard on yourself. And it's definitely too harsh to say Mari's unfit to be a mother ever; she's still learning and jeez, she's in her early 30s at latest?

HANA: I'm starting to suspect it's less that you got knocked on the head 'cause you sparred with jonin too many times, and more the other way 'round.

Mari's in her early twenties, and any further detail would constitute an OPSEC breach and result in invasive genjutsu.

Every kid follows their parents to listen in on Serious Conversations. It is Known.

Granted with the alertness thing, though. On the other hand, if Hazou walked on the ceiling they might both think he was shuffling around upstairs. :p

Yeah Hana's perspective is understandably limited, and wow does her conversation with Mari expose Hana's unfortunate background. Straight to slut shaming eh. And does she really think her 'self-defence' idea would stand any ground?

The next question is whether Mari will try to play us against Hana, or if she's better than that by now :p

Jesus. Yeah, she's a young adult who's basically spent all her time as a thinking being getting abused, seducing and killing people, and being squeezed under the thumb of a murderous autocrat.

It also seems pretty unfair of Hana to diss her for being a) seduction-spec and b) dissolute, given that the former wasn't really something she could say no to and the latter isn't all that different from Hana drinking herself into a stupor for two years.

(This is all in the context of "what should Mari actually think of herself, from my/our POV"; I think the things the characters said/thought in the update all made sense given their knowledge + emotional state.)
