Also, did we put any contingencies about Noburi not being front line combat material? Because I'm pretty sure he's worse than the others, and if he dies or is injured, we're screwed.

Nobby is not really worse than the others. He is actually better than Akane when it comes to total combat dice. Only thing he is bad at is dodging with Taijutsu, but that goes for Keiko too. Naturally he should keep back because he is the healer, but we are having this fight inside a phone booth; no room for front and back lines really.

Yeah, thinking it through with more sleep the mechanics would probably have worked out. I think it didn't click for me that we would be ditching the civilians in exchange for speed, which was dumb of me and I'm sorry.

Eh, PMYFing through the window is not 100% surefire strategy. It could go wrong and I'm not really sure what the QMs would roll for it (beyond Keiko the party is really shit at throwing things). Before EJ's post I wasn't really sure if that was any better than making a stand with all the party members. (Since we are getting Mass Combat bonuses as long as we get Joutaro inside the room.)

Well... we can hope that maybe Mari makes the executive decision to GTFO rather than fighting the jounin who apparently DOES have some form of opsec?

"Well, sorta," Inoue said. "It's true that heavy combat teams have the highest mortality rates, but experience makes a huge difference--it's mostly new genin who get it in the neck, and you guys have a little salt on you. Don't die for another six months and you've got a decent shot at making jonin. The second jump in mortality comes when you're a new-minted jonin, because people get there and, ay, they start thinking that they're all billy badass and, bee, they start getting bigger and badder missions. Anyway, if you survive for another six months your odds of surviving five years are pretty good."

Hey, can someone explain to me. How does damage/death actually work?

It doesn't actually seem to be explained in the Rules document, or I'm somehow missing that section. What degree of success leads to an injury versus leads to an incapacitate result versus leads to an actual death? How much of a difference is there?

I think everyone knew that going up against Joutaro might mean someone would take a hit, but we figured that with teamwork bonus the degree of success from a failed roll-off wasn't likely to kill anyone instantly. Being told that's not true seems to be what has gotten everyone freaking out.

Omake: One Day More
Shitty Les Mis
One Day More

Inoue: One day more!
Another day, another destiny,
In this never ending road to Calvary.
This man who has now seen our crime,
Will surely come to end our time here.
One day more!

Hazou: I thought we'd live forevermore,
How can I live when you've been parted?

Akane: Tomorrow I'll be worlds away,
And yet with you my world was started.

Kagome: One more day all on my own.
Hazou: I swear that we shall meet again!
Kagome: One more day with just my sealing.
Hazou: You weren't born to die like this!
Kagome: What a life I might have known,
Hazou: And I swear I'll bring you home.
Kagome: But she never made it back.

Shikigami: One more day before the storm!
Hazou: Do I follow where they went?
Shikigami: At the ivory gates of freedom!
Hazou: Shall I join my brothers there?
Shikigami: When our ranks begin to form,
Hazou: Do I stay or do I dare?
Shikigami: Will you take your place with me?

Chorus: The time is now, the day is here!

Inoue: One day more!

Joutarou: One day more to annihilation,
We will nip them in the bud.
I will crush these little schoolboys,
They will wet themselves with blood!

Missing-Nin: Watch 'em run amok,
Catch them as they fall,
Never know your luck when there's a free-for-all!
Here a little nip,
There a little touch,
Most of them are goners so they won't miss much!

Hivemind 1: One day to a new beginning!
Hivemind 2: Raise the flag of madness high!
Hivemind 1: Every man will blame themselves!
Hivemind 2: Every man will blame the GMs!
Hivemind 1: There's a new death in the party!
Hivemind 2: There's a new hole to be dug!
Hivemind: Do you hear the hivemind scream?

Hazou: My place, is here, I stay with you!

Inoue: One day more!
All: Chorus

Inoue: Tomorrow we'll be far away,
Tomorrow is the Judgement Day!

All: Tomorrow we'll discover what our God @eaglejarl has in store!
One more dawn!
One more day!
One day more!

It's not explicitly stated anywhere, but here's my impression of it. For single combat you just check the success level with this thing:
Reminder: Successes are broken down into 3 levels based off the formula:
(your roll - their roll) / (your dice + their dice)^0.65
(Note that 0.65 is an exponent, not a multiplier, and it only applies to the denominator.)

0-19: level A (minimal success)
20-49: level B (solid success)
50+: level C (total domination)

Level A gives a minor wound, meaning probably not life-threatening if treated with basic first aid but causes penalty dice.

Level B gives an actually serious wound. With Weapons this is deadly but with Taijutsu it doesn't have to be.

Level C is the critical hit and gets you painted all over the landscape if that's what the attacker was going for. I wouldn't be surprised if you could do non-lethal damage with Weapons here.

That's for single combat, for mass combat the System Rules says:
System Rules Document said:
Once the adjusted numbers of dice have been set, we roll everything and the highest roll wins. At GM's discretion people on the winning side might still be hurt and/or killed.

My estimate is that if we only get Level A success, there will be dead and seriously wounded party members. With Level B we might escape with only serious wounds that Noburi can deal with (assuming he wasn't wounded himself). Level C would probably see us survive with no to minor wounds.

EDIT: That's if we are winning, if we lose we are probably looking half the party dead and rest badly wounded.

That's just me making an educated guess, we haven't really seen enough combat to tell.

Omake: In the Middle
Quickly, let us all make omake to appease Eaglejarl!

...

I guess it's worth a shot.

OMAKE: THE ONLY SENSIBLE OPTION

"DEAR SAGE! WHAT THE?! WHAT?! / Hazou what did you do? " asked ShikiMari sensei.

Hazou scratched his chin and frowned at the two headed monstrosity.

"I... ran out of corpses. Sorry. Had to improvise."

Akeiburi gave a sympathetic look / scowled / scowled.

"Hazou if you don't know how to fix this..."

"I can fix it! I just need more bodyparts to work with. Sage!"

"It's really impressive that you managed to do this sensei. / The pangolins had better not see me like this or they'll disown me. And then I will murder you. / Oh this is just typical..."

Hazou clicked his fingers and pointed at the Akane head.

"See! Akane appreciates my hard work! Why can't the rest of you be more like her? Best. Student."

Akeiburi beamed / glared / huffed.

"WHY ARE YOU ALL BEING SO BLASÉ ABOUT THIS?!" Shikigami head half-screamed.

Mari head sighed.

"You really didn't spend very long with them, did you? As far as Hazou's plots go, this one's kinda... in the middle."

............

Wait. Eaglejarl likes body-horror, right?

*shrugs*

Ah, I'm sure it'll be fine.

(Unrelated to Maddy's post above)
Okay, all together now.

Breathe iiiiiiiiiiiiin....

Good. And now,

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!

This has been your regularly scheduled therapeutic screeching session. Thank you, and have a nice day.

"Hazou what did you do?" asked ShikiMari sensei.
I feel like there should be a comma after his name, to emphasize the restrained air of disapproval :D

Huh. While it was certainly in the mass combat rules if we looked, I don't think most voters had in mind that characters on our side would die even if we won the roll-off. That argument probably would have swayed more votes.

It would be nice to get some of this clearly stated, though. There's been an awful lot of talk in this thread about how deadly combat is given that we don't even have explicit injury/death rules.

Yeah, if I'd thought about that I definitely wouldn't have voted to fight.

This sounds like the time where we voted to be Mist missing-nin hiding in Fire. People bitched that they didn't know Yagura wasn't insane even though it was clearly stated that the rational world would have big changes and all we had to do was ask the GMs.

We fucked up because we made assumptions. Now we get to read an update where Akane breaks her leg and we have to kill her to keep Joutarou from taking her.
