This sounds like the time where we voted to be Mist missing-nin hiding in Fire. People bitched that they didn't know Yagura wasn't insane even though it was clearly stated that the rational world would have big changes and all we had to do was ask the GMs.

We fucked up because we made assumptions. Now we get to read an update where Akane breaks her leg and we have to kill her to keep Joutarou from taking her.
Oh, no, absolutely. I'm blaming no one but myself for my assumptions.

It would be nice to get some of this clearly stated, though. There's been an awful lot of talk in this thread about how deadly combat is given that we don't even have explicit injury/death rules.

The quest is actually pretty rules light (albeit it might not always seem that way). Most of the time the mechanics are fueled by what the QMs think make sense and that is really hard to pin down to an exact, exhaustive rule set.

Just take the vagueness of the rules as a feature simulating the chaos of nature and roll with it; that's what I do.

For people worried about party members, think about the poor civilians we are about to trample below our ninja-tabi. That's also a thing that's going to happen whether we win or not.

I care so much less about those civilians than our party members that I cannot even begin to describe how much less it is.

Eh. They're all lying on the ground and nobody is using any explosive jutsu. No one is going to waste even a second deliberately attacking them. They'll probably get stepped on some, but I doubt it'll be worth more than some bruises. None of them are going to die, whomever wins.

Chakra enhanced kick to their face to kick up a spray of blood, brains, and eyes to blind an opponent.

Seal Akane's body as quickly as possible to avoid information theoretic death?

Wait, if there's souls in the narutoverse, we don't need to do that. But I think we should do that, just in case.
I know of at least two settings where souls aren't necessarily read-write memory storage, but I don't think the Narutoverse is one.

Should I take that to mean that you don't want to hear about how Joutaro hasn't done anything to deserve a death sentence in our hands either?

Additionally, anybody who tries to fight without risking harm to the civilians will get a penalty, including with Taijutsu and Weapons. Different ninjutsu will be affected differently depending on their collateral damage potential.

So either the civilians are at risk or we are taking penalty dice. I have a feeling that Joutaro at least is not going to give a shit about them.

I guess that's what the QMs have ruled. I disagree with the ruling and don't think it makes any sense, but that's apparently what they've ruled.

Imagine six people having a super-speed knife-fight inside a small room filled with caltrops. Now imagine three unconscious people on the floor. I don't really like it either but to say that there's zero risk to the guys on the floor does kinda fall on the side of wishful thinking.

I don't care, throw his fellow ninja at him, he'll either hesitate in cutting him down or cause a diplomatic incident.

It was a joke about how Grue's superpower throws darkness ....

Good lord we're on edge.

Also, I just like to point out that @eaglejarl giving us that heads up is probably him being compassionate. At least this way we're not entirely blindsided by the likely outcome.

To be fair, I'm not familiar with Grue at all :p

Know who else is on edge? AKANE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

You know, it says mass combat death or injuries would be decided on QM discretion. I expect eaglejarl would normally decide based on individual rolls, but if the rolls were close... (breaks into Hamilton song)

"If you had to choose, if you had to choose"

How would you order the death list? From order of most willing to see die, to least willing to see die? Obviously Kagome exempt since he isn't here. For me it would go something like (leftmost being the one we're most willing to lose, right the least):

Noburi < Keiko < Mari < Hazou < Akane

Who know, maybe a commonly enough expressed preference in the thread would influence the final decision.

Considering the reactions?

I rather assume he's laughing himself sick at our panic.

Okay, seriously. He's a troll, but I'm pretty sure he's more of a dad-troll than a 4chan-troll.

I'd be pretty surprised if @eaglejarl didn't take at least a minute fighting with himself over whether or not to fudge the rolls. I'd also guess he'd choose to play it straight, since that's a key part of contract the quest has with its players, but I'd expect him to at least feel bad about it.

Honestly, I'm getting pretty annoyed with how we, the players, seem to like holding @eaglejarl up by a few jokes made in good fun. I'm totally cool with teasing him back for the shit he pulls, because good lord he deserves it, but it's being done in a way that's hard for me to tell from genuine vitriol and that isn't kosher.

Edit: Also I just might not be perceptive enough. In which case please carry on. :V

If I thought he was taking exception to someone's remarks, believe me, I'd be the first one to jump to his defense, but he's been good about bringing it up in a non-joking manner when he does. I trust our QMs to communicate with us openly about that kinda thing.

e: Also, an "interesting" way he could pull a loss on our part is dismemberment rather than instant death.

I was planning to write an omake where Akane has the Jashin based style I proposed and finds out that a seal Hazou made to help her deal with the voices in her head is actually a seal that creates and kills a requisite amount of fetuses. Something in the style of "The power of Youth is babies!"

But I don't think that appropriate for the current situation. I had an idea for something challenging we could do that furthers our goals at the same time if we make it out of this alive. We could have the chunin split up and compete with each other for who can make the most progress toward our merchant empire in some out if the way city. It would be nice to just control Hazou for a change.
That's an interesting proposal and I sincerely hope we all live to see it written up in an action plan
