Question: They said that Hazou won't have time for the clan head stuff when he's doing Summoner training. So should we have a plan/contingency in place then? Just giving Mari free reign seems... Problematic, especially with what's currently going on.

Akane for Acting Clan Head?

Well everyone else except Mari and Haru are booked. Noburi has another 23 days of summoning training. Akane and Kagome will be working on the notes. We are basically locked into trusting Mari

Her eyebrows went up, but she didn't ask the obvious question: Why was Shadow Clone, an admittedly useful but not overpowered jutsu, more important than the epic skill of Summoning?
When we talk to Akane, I think this should be addressed. There's good reason to keep FOOM secret until Akane's properly begun it, but I feel like we should still find some way to reassure her that, yes, Shadow Clone is more important than Summoning.

I also wouldn't be averse to bringing her into FOOM, since I do trust her and she's likely to be one of the first of us to start (if not the first). But mainly, I just want to convey to her that we weren't just making an excuse to take the Dogs for ourselves, that Akane with SC is stronger than Akane with Summoning.

edit: clarity about secrecy. There's good reason to keep FOOM as secret as physically possible, even from the people who we're having FOOM. If we clue Akane in, then even if she would never spill of it of her own accord there are still edge case scenarios where she might end up leaking it, and so therefore we should minimize the number of people beyond the absolute minimum mandatory in order to make FOOM work.

The other side of it is that her knowing makes FOOM go more smoothly, and the edge cases where she leaks it are edge cases, but also, if Akane figures FOOM out on her own (she's smart and what's happening will become self-evident soon enough) then she might not understand that it's mega-ultra-top-secret and represent a bigger OPSEC risk. Thus we would want to clue Akane in before she figures out FOOM on her own, which we can't really know for sure when it'll happen.

After thinking about this, I'm tentatively in favour of telling her about FOOM now, to make sure she's clear on the OPSEC right from the start (with the clarity of our decision being a plus), but there's good arguments for holding off for a while too.

Summoning is a 12-hour commitment, but even assuming Hazou spends 8 hours on sleep and 3 on eating/walking/etc. Hazou should still have an hour to get updated on things. Just ask Mari or Gaku to compile a daily summary or something, which Hazou can read over during meals or before bed.

We also have a secretary.

[X] Action Plan: How to Train Your Summoner
Word Count: ---

  • Hazou sets his affairs in order before starting Summoning training.
    • Arrange for Mari, Gaku, or one of their subordinates to take over things Hazou would be doing during the training period (projects, meetings, etc.).
      • Hazou still expects daily briefings on important events and things that require Clan Head input.
    • Have words with Akane.
    • See if we can find a telescope merchant or craftsman. If successful, arrange to buy several for study and try to persuade said craftsmen to work with us.
      • Would it be possible to invert the telescope to see very small things instead of very distant things?
  • Timeskip until Noburi finishes his Summoning Training.

@Oneiros There are only two concerns I have for your plan:
  • You don't seem to have the link to Hazou and Mari's conversation on Akane, and I would very much like this to be linked and/or referenced in your plan. This is partially so that the QMs know we're using that as a template/subject for discussion, and also for their convenience since they've written some of this stuff before.
  • I'm a bit leery about supporting Sasuke getting the Porcupine Scroll, mostly because I don't know if I would want to support the Uchiha Clan getting it over another of our allies (the ISC comes to mind). I would appreciate your thoughts as to why we would want Sasuke over...well, just about anyone else.

Because he's a powerful but isolated political player that needs to become an S-rank ninja. This way we can get long term influence over him and ultimately tie him even closer with 7th path chakra water.

@Velorien Hey, I'm not sure if you have something in mind for Hazou's talk with Akane; do you, and if so, would you rather we just include that the talk happens rather than overspecifying?

[X] Action Plan: Timeskip Downtime

  • Hazou
    • Does reasonable things in preparation for timeskip. Sorts out chain of command in his absence (Mari -> Kagome -> Noburi -> Akane -> Haru), etc.
  • Akane
    • Happens [this will be specified to the extent that Velorien prefers]
  • Keiko
    • Arrange time with her at some point soon. Not doing anything especially, just something she'd like doing; he's missed spending time with his sister, and wants to make her a priority, as family.
  • Game Night
    • Arrange once monthly, written at the QMs' whims. Invite Sasuke specifically in addition to the usual cohort.
  • Misc
    • Acquire telescopes now that you have an astronomical sum of money.

Query for a minor addition - did we ever write that letter to Hazou's mother? I know he wanted to do that.

Hey faflec, would it be possible to read Akane in on FOOM? I know that's a non-trivial addition, but IV's above analysis of the tradeoff seems sensible. (Also, I personally think Akane knowing now that she could become S-rank might be something that could slightly help with power imbalance and self-worth issues a km down the road).

Holy hell, @huhYeahGoodPoint over on Discord came up with the best idea ever. I'm not sure this fallen world even deserves something so perfect. Nonetheless, here it is:

[x] Action Plan: The Warlock of the Romcom Gods
Word count: 499
Humor index: 80+% serious.
  • Show Mari the plan. Act like you're serious, but reveal it's a joke once she finishes reading.
    • Contingency: If she refuses to acknowledge the joke, insisting it must be done, let her. Accept any "improvements". Just ensure it actually aims to accomplish its goal.
  • Outline:
    • High concept: You've had innuendos used against you enough. Time to weaponize them.
    • Goal: Lean the truth regarding the Five.
    • Aspect Bonus: You're blessed by Lord Jashin, the god of love, and therefore of romcom.
    • It will go off the rails immediately, for romcom is chaos. Nonetheless, it has its rules. Trust it, let it sweep you up, and navigate its tides towards your destination.
  • Execution:
    • Arrange a games night, to relax before months of studying. Invite the usual invitees, plus Sasuke. Ensure Keiten Shiomaru are present.
    • Noburi: Ensure Shiori sees Yuno's condition ("shaken, watches her words"), then leave the compound with Yuno under a melodramatic excuse. Have a private date, far from ground zero.
    • Akane: Take Keiko into a private room. Ask for advice on polyamory: Keiko's the expert. Yes, Hazou has someone in mind. They'll be arriving shortly.
    • Hazou (minutes after Akane): Approach Shiori. What did Keiko do to that foreigner girl in the Nara's dungeon?
      • You heard Yuno's culture empathizes purity, and she returned positively haunted.
      • The last you saw, Keiko ordered Yuno there, talking about violations and how the Nara's leadership has illicit goals— desires? Which it hides even from other Nara? And something about using twisted otherworldly creatures as implements?
      • You'd ask Keiko, but you're somewhat intimidated. Can Shiori accompany you?
        • (conspiratorially) Also, Keiko'd implied she'd make sacrifices to keep this quiet. Maybe Shiori can use this in their... competition?
    • Haru: Passes sealed letters, through intermediaries.
      • To Tenten (timing: once Akane takes Keiko): A gratitude letter from T&I for helping with testing new implements.
      • To Shikamaru (timing: once Hazou approaches Shiori): In Shikaku's handwriting and style, addressed to Keiko and Shikamaru, marked top-secret. Cryptic message suggesting the "demon child of tapirs" is Tenten's long-lost sister.
        • (Don't forge the signature, that's probably criminal.)
    • Intended sequence:
      • Hazou and Shiori enter the room with Keiko and Akane. Shiori starts going about the dungeon, threatens to tell Tenten. Akane yells that Hazou's moving too fast, chases him into an out-of-the-way corner, slapstick comedy ensues. Shikamaru enters, hands Keiko the letter. Tenten enters, hears Shiori still talking about the dungeon, glares at Keiko for not inviting her. Shikamaru and Keiko assume she's angry at what they did to her sister, try to justify themselves.
      • Meanwhile, Akane and Hazou "spar" in a corner, forgotten but within earshot.
    • Mari: Run interference, manage timing (by manipulating when PoI's games end?).
    • Contingency: If Keiko's about to kill you, plead you were only trying to bring Ami back. Surely so much chaos will summon her?
      • Be ready if that really happens.
  • Study Summoning for three months. Mari's the replacement Clan Head. Ask her to let Akane and Noburi practice clan-heading too.
    • Buy three telescopes.

@Velorien, do you bless this plan?

Give me five hours to express my absolute approval of this excellent plan with no downsides whatsoever.

Wait, wait!

You need to write to timeskip for three months at the end, so that we can get bonus XP for writing such an enthralling plan for Velorien, multiplied by three months time.
