Alright, vanished most of the Keiko section. I'm still hoping we could get her thoughts on optimizing her decision, not sure if that's possible, though.

There's also a fuckton of space, so if you guys have thoughts on stuff to add please give me good ideas. As in reasonable, well-detailed ideas.
We could also ask Naruto.
He is a Ninja with a clan(Uzumaki), that lived in Konoha for his whole life and can be in multiple places at the same time.
In fact, i propose this as the first choice, as whoever he'll choice will probably
Done. Also indicated to check Jiraiya's will for possible candidates.
@faflec

Ask Akane for her sealing loadout. We're going to need to sell any Uber Jiraiya Seals she has imemdiately for the money.
Done.

[X] Action Plan: The Clan Thing

Word Count: 231
  • Meet with Keiko privately.
    • IFF she's willing to listen and won't take offense, Hazou has thoughts on salvaging Keiko's relationship with the Pangolins while still ending her selling of Skytowers.
      • Hazou can order Keiko to end the deal, putting the blame on himself.
      • Keiko could tell the Pangolins that for Human Path-related reasons the deal has to be negotiated by the new Toad Summoner.
      • We could sell Pangolins non-combat stuffs, like chakra monster food.
  • Determine the new Clan Treasurer.
    • Check Akane's parents and future Uchiha adoptees for the necessary skillset. Broach the idea to the most qualified individuals; ask Keiko to give them lessons.
    • Ask Noburi if his candidates have family with the skillset.
    • Does Naruto have any ideas? Maybe Jiraiya suggested some promising people in his will?
    • Last resort: give Kagome the job.
  • Misc.:
    • You've been forgetful and absent-minded lately. Start a journal, jotting down your activities and mental state throughout the day.
    • Review Jiraiya's notes on politics (Seventh and Human Path) and the local underworld.
      • Check for details on Hagoromo's debts.
    • Enlist Mari's assistance in sending mourning bouquets to families of the fallen.
    • Set up meetings with ISC and Asuma to discuss Hat strategy.
    • Ask Mari who owns our debts, and how open they are to under-the-table dealings.
    • Scribe and sell seals, maximizing 両 earned/hour.
      • Maybe sell oil Macerator-superexplosives?
      • Could we sell Jiraiya's seals we gave to Akane?

"Please find a comfortable seat, beloved wife, while I call for more Shiori-brand tea. I have a feeling that we'll be staying up for a while."
Me: LORE TIME! LORE TIME! LORE TIME!
Eaglejarl: And now onto further (mis)adventures Hazō and others from Gōketsu got into...
Velorien: ... followed by Keiko's reaction to the loredump, which will not mention nor repeat any specifics of said loredump.
Me: :(

[x] Make Keiko the PC
it is unprecedented for two of the Five Clans to intermarry
Here we go. The Five. Sealed superintelligences?

Mori from Mist, Nara from Leaf, Tama from Rock. I've always assumed that Sand and Cloud also had intelligence bloodlines.

... can we jump to Keiko now? It looks like it's where all the fun will be, from now on.

If Mari is not in fact answerable to Hazou, he should withdraw from taking responsibility for whatever it is she's doing.
Why? It makes her useful, and doesn't actually cost him anything.
You are outside the Gōketsu chain of command. Ignore any attempts to give you orders.
I am confused.
"Legally you will be deemed to belong to both Jiraiya's clan and the Nara Clan. This is a stressful position to occupy, and failure will lead to dire consequences. Since you will be adopted into Jiraiya's clan first, your Mori affiliation will be revoked at that stage."
She is a Goketsu. She is also a Nara. Since she is a Goketsu, how is she not in the Goketsu chain of command?
"We are not having children," Keiko said flatly.
Very cute, Keiko, but you agreed to have children, and it is furthermore not possible that the Nara would form a marriage alliance through you at the cost of scuttling the ruling dynasty within the clan.
"Indeed," Shikaku showed no surprise. "There will be no restrictions on your interactions outside the clan, so long as you protect its secrets and do not harm its interests or reputation. You will be required to marry a Nara husband and produce children in due course."

Hazō gave her the look of bottomless frustration he normally reserved for the work of that albino chakra fox that had apparently signed a non-intervention pact with Fifi.
Ahahahahaha! I'm back! And this time without that cat(?) getting in my way!

More seriously:
  • Does this take the place of your Thursday update, Velorien, or was it a bonus?
  • Are we going to get to see the FORBIDDEN LORE that Keiko's about to hear? Inquiring minds want to know!
  • I really liked this chapter, especially the shark-based culture clash.
As hecked as our current financial situation is, I'm still enjoying seeing things settle into place now that we're back at Leaf. Of course, now we gotta start dealing with the sidhe Ami again, so we've got frantically optimized attempts to keep Hazou from being played like a fiddle on the horizon, and I'm honestly looking forward to it a little.

@faflec , as long as we have space, can you add something about us figuring out what A and B rank missions pay? And how dangerous they are? Might be relevant later, but we should know.

Please tell me that @OliWhail will be writing more on the Forbidden Lore
No, he won't. And Keiko won't tell us:
You will not take any action, or share any information, that might interfere with Nara interests or give the Gōketsu advantage over the Nara, no matter how trivial it may be. Err on the side of caution.
Seriously, can we please swap hosts? Or... wait, no, I suppose once Mari is the Hokage we can just pressure the Nara until they tell us everything. Uhh.

Whom do we need to kill to make it happen again? Asuma, Chouza, and Hiashi? We already know how to kill Hiashi; let's start brainstorming about the other two. Can they fall down some stairs?

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail Did Hazou at any point discuss with Keiko ways to optimize her decision (as was in the previous plan)? If so, how did she respond; if not, what was his internal justification, and will said questions be covered in the next Keiko interlude/update?
Looking at the plan, I see only one suggestion to optimise her decision. It can go in the Thursday update if you like.

She is a Goketsu. She is also a Nara. Since she is a Goketsu, how is she not in the Goketsu chain of command?
How do you envision somebody being in two chains of command?

Does this take the place of your Thursday update, Velorien, or was it a bonus?
  • Are we going to get to see the FORBIDDEN LORE that Keiko's about to hear? Inquiring minds want to know!
  • I really liked this chapter, especially the shark-based culture clash.
This is a bonus. I offered to write the Keiko scene of this plan while @eaglejarl did whatever else he was going to do. Then 6,000 words happened. As for the forbidden lore, bearing mind that it's so very HDK, so good luck finding out more.

We were loaded then but also pressed for time and everything was on fire and Jiraiya was barely holding it together. We were given three options for purchasing existing compounds, and made the decision mostly based on coolness factor and the assumption we had the dosh to pay for it and then some.

Quite a bit has changed since then.

I reiterate my previous statements on how socials are very different to game. For one, technicalities do not count.

Hazou: *passively tracking compound interest on a dozen accounts and running arbitrage simulations in the back of his head, instantly answering relevant questions whenever they come up*
Shika: "Why didn't I listen to dad...."

E: did feudal Japan have compound interest?? Or did they do constant-fraction loans or some such?

See now I want to do this, if only to screw with everyone else

Hazo: well since Naruto will eventually be taking my place as clanhead, I might as well try my hand at the book keeping.

Mari: Hazo you're a smart kid but are you sure, there's a lot of information involved.

Hazo: Doesn't hurt to try right, May I have a look at the books please.

Mari: Well alright....

Hazo:.....

Mari: Not exactly easy reading right? Don't worry, I've had months and it's still tough to wrap my head arou-

Hazo: done

Mari: what

Hazo: hmmm, I have a few ideas on how to balance out our books, as well as increase our income without the Pangolins. You see we can.......

------------------

Hazo: And that should cover us for the next decade or so, assuming it all goes smoothly.

Mari: I....

Hazo: Of course even if our initial plans fall through, we'll still contingencies two to six to keep us out of the red.

Mari: Hazo sometimes you scare the hell out of me....

No, but the argument appears to specifically be that we should do something that appears to have serious social implications/consequences and it being waved off because on a technical level it would make sense from our privileged OOC perspective, taking into account none of the views of everyone we'd have to worry about convincing. Except even worse, because at least last time we'd only technically have to worry about the views of the ANBU, as opposed to the entire village. I am equivocating the two scenarios because upon reading one I was immediately struck by the apparent similarities, and was annoyed because last time I argued quite a lot about this, and it appears to have not stuck. Admittedly, I missed that checking with NPCs first was the plan, so it's nice that that's the case.

I understand your frustration. From my perspective, I'm simply pointing out the potential goal-state of "what if we no longer had this massive expense and everything else was pretty much okay?" and then suggesting a rough outline of one possible path to that goal state as a proof of concept. (Generally if there is one path, there are many, many more. Consider @MMKII's varied suggestions including living in the Uzumaki or Senju compounds.)

I freely admit there are issues with the particular approach of "squat in the Forest of Death" (if my "oh, we can even sacrifice our adoptees to the chakra beasts and have less expense" comment was any indication), and also that there are social problems of giving up on the current compound that would need to be deftly navigated in order to not be politically eviscerated for it. My contention is that you cannot possibly know that there is not a path of execution within our means from our current state to the goal state if you don't even consider it feasible because "we might fail" or "at face value it's social suicide."

Y'all want money? Sell the leaf underworld to The Yakuza in exchange for getting Mari the hat
"Unfortunately, all things must end. The singular individual perished in an unfortunate accident, and the Akasugi Organisation exploited the advantageous position in which he'd placed them to trigger a process of explosive expansion. The Third Hokage, may his spirit be one with the Will of Fire forever, chose not to curb them as much as he could have, for reasons I'm certain the Fifth could explain better than I. And we of Water, who had until that point enjoyed uncontested control over certain spheres of influence, found ourselves engaged in a bitter struggle for what my complacent predecessors considered 'rightfully ours'. The impact of that struggle rippled through the other maritime powers and provoked a shadow war no less complex and vicious than the shinobi world wars you are familiar with. The aftermath redrew many boundaries, paving the way for the ascendancy of the Nettō Association, breaking the pirate lords' stranglehold over southern Tea, and having many other effects which are entirely irrelevant to you, save that it left us and the Akasugi as implacable rivals in an ironic parallel to our countries' respective villages."

"And you will have an enormous advantage over them if you can get the Hokage on your side," Hazō reasoned.

The Oyabun smiled. "All things in good time. I am not an ambitious man.

This is something he desperately wants. Luckily we are in a position to grant it upon our victory which he can assure. If we make this play not only do we secure the hat but we secure an alliance with the new ruler of both mist and leafs underworlds

Sure. [insert timeline comment here oh Yog-Sothoth why do we keep doing this to ourselves]
Love you :)
