Never read about Ninshu before. How's the understanding one another without words thing supposed to work? It sounds like some sort of empathic telepathy.

Makes me wonder if killing intent is a bastardized version.

In the discord we were hashing out some wild mass guesses about what the hell that stuff is a while back.

My current working theory is that its just misuse of whatever psychic connection network the Sage guy created to "connect people and allow them to understand each other".

Genjutsu would work along similar lines, but in a more structured way.

The Legendary Jiraiya, Grandmaster of Ninja Arts, Super Overgod of all Shinobi, Most Famous Ninja Ever is go!
No wonder he adopted Naruto. It's like seeing a repeat of that. Except less emphatetic.
Things I am proud of:

  • I fixed my front foot and didn't make a single mistake all day
  • I smiled and was polite to Watanabe-sensei the whole time that he was smacking me around so he doesn't think I'm weak
  • No one saw me take the knife
That last line made me worried.
Thankfully, he didn't seem to do anything, at least nothing deadly-
Speaking of Yamato, I bet he ratted me out and that's why the Hokage wanted to talk to me. I should break his jaw next time.
(Speaking of that turd, I wonder if his jaw ever healed enough for him to talk? I know Tanahashi was eventually getting around just fine on his crutches, but I never checked on the others.)
Okay, I am no longer so certain.
Either way, I'll be taking his threats of physical violence more seriously now. Like, not just intellectually, but also instinctively.

It's basically sharing your emotions and understanding one another without needing to say anything. Think less telepathy, more you just kind of understand one another and your feelings. I always thought it was a bit weird how it went from that to "oh shit I can spit out fireballs!"

I'd like to propose a research project to better understand how the empathic network works and what we can use it for. I think it could be awfully useful for our goals to have a means of complete communication that isn't sabotaged by all the crap ninja do out of paranoia. Imagine how different things would have gone with Ami if we could have cut through her many layers of distraction and obfuscation and just understood one another.

We could find someone to sit down and attempt it with, feeling out what we can do and communicate. We could start by projecting an emotion like killing intent is projected but with other emotions instead and maybe move on to trying more abstract messages if we find success with simple emotions.

Who to pick?

Noburi we can trust, but he has no particular skills in the area.

Keiko is great at projecting killing intent, but I'm not sure she could deal with other emotions.

Ino has a bloodline that it wouldn't be surprising to find is an enhancement of the ability to use this network, so she might be a perfect choice for exploring how it works. The only problem is we'd have to be careful about anything we don't want her to know.

Well first off it can't be anyone we don't trust 100%. That instantly cuts it down to just Uplift members. Kagome and Mari I'd say no for now, they're both unbalanced veterans with too much they don't want to talk about to willingly share it all via empathic mind meld. That leaves Noburi, Keiko, and Akane. Noburi would probably be the best choice, no particular talent towards it but that's what practice is for, Keiko is a bit too fragile right now but even if she isn't participating her input from watching would be useful. Akane would be a good choice if we can get past the awkwardness that was there.....and if she's not dead.

Good points. I admit I'm tempted by the possibility of what Ino's expertise and bloodline could enable us to discover, though. What can we not afford to let Ino know? Her clan aren't political enemies, and she's a decent person who probably wouldn't try to blackmail us or use things like the some of our secret missions to psychologically hurt us.

I wonder if her clan have any professional rules about privacy towards Leaf ninja they mind dive that might apply.

Old age presumably, he's in his mid 50's to 60's right?

He had white hair even has a boy/young adult in canon.

Assuming that is still the case in MfD, my guess is that it had to have change a lot more rapidly than old age.

Maybe a jutsu gone wrong/right (he has one that let's him control his hair defensively) or he took some of Orochimaru's "Experimental Vitamins".

So Step 0 is querying the set of {Knowledgeable experts} and then comparing what they say to try to cut through any of the mystic mantra stuff.

As far as testing stuff goes:

We can just ask Keiko to try to spookify us some more. Psychic brawling is a two-way street, afterall.

I'm always up for more Broburi time.

If we get quality Ino time there are more optimal ways to spend it.

I know that's the case in canon, but I'm guessing QMs went "what logical reason would a 12 yr old have for having white hair?" and didn't do that. That or Hiruzen was just saying it in an in general type manner.

White hair is a pretty normal hair color in anime in general, and Naruto in particular.

Kakashi and his father Sakumo, Jiraiya, Tobirama and even a side character like A's secretary Mabui all had natural white hair.

E: And d'oh, A and Killer Bee as well.

Killing intent seems pretty well understood. I'd really like to explore communicating other things if we can.

Working on it as a project with Ino seems like a good way to build trust and a positive relationship with her that can be parlayed into other things later, don't you think?

I believe it was said that Yamanaka jutsu are techniques, not dependent on bloodline. Plus in canon jutsu that invade and scan the mind for information is taught to ninja who are part of intelligence. Yamanaka seem to be to mind jutsu what Sarutobi are to fire jutsu. It's not that they're the only ones that can do it, it's that their clan is arguably the best at it, even taking it to a whole new level with crazy jutsu like their posession and mindbreak jutsu.

Jiraiya was the spymaster of leaf for decades, if anyone knows mental jutsu put side of the Yamanaka we can trust, he would be it. He's busy and I'm not sure how much he would care about it but Hazo has made some pretty crazy stuff, he might be willingly to at least give us some of his notes and teach us a bit to see if we can make something useful from it.

Things Hazou and Jiraiya have in common:
  • Sealmasters
  • Nearly getting their teams killed as early teens through poor decisions in defense of their team.
  • More ambition than you can shake a stick at

Ooooh, that's actually even better. If the Yamanaka have been exploring universally available uses of the empathic connection that makes Ino the perfect person to at least talk to about this and possibly explore the idea with.

Does anybody object to just talking to her about it? That shouldn't pose a risk of letting any secrets loose, and it'd be interesting to hear what she has to say about the whole empathic communication idea. I think Hazou would love to be able to communicate who he is and what he cares about with people in a way that doesn't get muddled up by words, and we could ask her if she thinks that's possible along with other questions.

@eaglejarl Excellent update.

Minor discrepancy:

Sarutobi-sensei had a storage scroll full of marmot roast, carrots, and hot tea. We sat there for maybe twenty minutes, eating and drinking while looking out over the village.

Now, I haven't had dinner yet because someone had to go and cause trouble, thereby forcing me to spend three hours dealing with paperwork and being yelled at. I want teriyaki chicken, and you're buying."

Good way to get Hazou's brain scrambled for poking his nose into clan secrets unwittingly, anyway.

I don't think they can scramble brains, can they?

I wonder what the rules are about independently inventing clan secrets. I'd guess it's allowed even if it would upset the clan that invented the thing first since they'd no longer be the only one with the idea, it's just stealing secrets that's not OK.

We're not actually interested in the combat or intelligence gathering applications of what the Yamanaka can do, we just want a better method of communication. Perhaps that will help it seem less threatening.
