@OliWhail FYI you might want to post again with >100 words so that people get the update on the update.
Gah, you're totally right.

Hello all, our apologies for the confusion around voting, that was a reflection of some comfusion in QM chat about who was available to write when. We'll call voting closed now, and I'm gonna be doing my best to get the chapter out by tomorrow. This weekend's update may be short or an interlude since y'all will almost certainly have a short voting period.

Here are some extra words to make sure the OP alert triggers: orange. Donatello. Frederick. Forsooth. Miskatonic. Ableism. Roundabout. Fair thee well. Molto bene. Au vidusein. Brexit. Munch. Hella. Bork. Phlegm. Rigid. Howitzer. Bella Donna. Mark. Pulitzer. Amalgam. Fontaine. Bull. Fortenbras. Fish hook. Mountain. Train. Trample. Blazing. Outlier. T'was brillig, and the slythy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe; all mimsy were the borogoves, and the mome raths outgrabe.

Sounds like you're sounding out codewords until the end.

So if we ever were to successfully influence Hazou so that he would stop trying to eat his own feet all of the time, what character flaw would he have left? His naivety will wear off eventually as he grows up soon or later as well. Turning him into a Gary Stu would take too much life out of the quest, in my opinion.

I am confident that if he isn't eating his own feet all the time, he would still be an interesting character, because he's still a ninja groping in the dark trying to find a lightswitch.

And he isn't certainly a HPMOR expy by any means.

Omake: Obvious Kabbalistic Implications

I can only assume this string of words indicates the results of the voted-in plan.

Threat level orange: moderate but not immediately severe. Donatello and Frederick clearly refer to Frederick Hartt's novel, Donatello: Prophet of Modern Vision, which undoubtedly is a reference to Hazo and his uplift plans. Forsooth, meaning an indignant "indeed": Hazo is annoyed and/or surprised by this result. Miskatonic University is a lovecraftian campus, most noteworthy for its library's collection of occult tomes, indicating forbidden knowledge with a close analogue in seals and summoning. Ableism, a divide between the haves and the have-nots, or between the cans and cannots. Roundabout, or circuitous, or not-simple. Fair thee well, an indication that somebody intends to leave.

Interpretation, part 1: Despite Hazo's best efforts, the attempts at persuading our fellow genin of the dangers fail. Instead, they assume this is a ruse to flaunt Hazo's sealcrafting ability and make them fall in line. To spite the Leaf teams, they deliberately aim for active seals, and cause a sealing failure. One or more genin are injured and retreat, forfeiting as soon as possible. One additional genin is affected more severely, their knowledge and personalities twisted by exposure.

Molto bene: "very well", acceptance of the situation. Au vidusein: "Middle East", combined with Brexit implies a division among the ranks. "Munch Hella Bork Phlegm Rigid", a string of descriptive words, all presumably referencing a single thing. Howitzer, an artillery gun, indicating attacks from long range. Bella Donna, most likely indicating nightshade, an unseen threat. Mark seems to imply targeting, but with Pulitzer instead implies Mark Fritz, who reported on the mass slaughters in Rwanda. Amalgam, the combination of many to one. Fontaine could indicate a fountain, but in tandem with Amalgam could indicate mind control or subversion of will (a la Frank Fontaine, of Bioshock).

Interpretation, part 2: Another seal failure opens a rift near Team Uplift's base, unleashing a stream of ravening metal dogs, with rigid limbs and projectile snot made of mercury. The two Leaf teams have an argument over how to handle the situation. In the end, the argument proves irreconciliable: agreeing to disagree, Akane's team leaves, while Hazo's team stays to attempt to seal the rift. Meanwhile, the Twisted Genin, appearing unaffected by the sealing failure, manages to reach his former team and enslave them, gestalting into a hivemind. Between the three, they set into the swamp, now bent on the murder of their competition.

Bull, male cattle, strong but easily-led. Fortinbras, an impulsive and driven character from Hamlet, representing hope for the monarchy. Fish hook, a trap or snare or bait. Mountain could represent a great summit or impassable height, but more likely represents the Village Hidden in the Mountain. Train, to improve through effort. Trample, overwhelming a foe by raw force. Blazing, to burn brightly or fiercely, again representing sheer power. Outlier: something that deviates substantially from the norm. A line from the poem Jabberwocky, which is about the slaying of a great beast.

Interpretation part 3: Word of the sealing failures spreads to Jiraiya, who incites the other Jounin to march into the Swamp at full force. The Twisted Genin Team manages to briefly influence the Jounin, but are ultimately slain by Jiraiya before substantial damage can be done. From there, the Jounin sweep through the swamp, extracting the genin as they go. The last team they find is Hazo's: although injured and at the end of their ropes, their quick thinking and development of new strategies during their fight allowed them to survive and stave off the metal dogs long enough for Jiraiya to seal the rift, thereby preserving the hopes of Mist and Leaf alike.

It's amazing how much information you've packed in, @OliWhail, but are you sure you should reveal all this so soon...?

Dammit, I can only give one rating!

So after we finish stomping the chunnin exams I think we should go and find the capybara scroll. Give Oro-chan a visit and see where he left it. Snake uncle missed all of our birthdays so he has to make up for all of those

Wasn't the whole point of winning the exams and forcefully allying Leaf with Mist so that we could pool our collective resources to find Naruto?

I have a feeling Jiraiya would be quite unhappy if we postpone the search for his godson any longer without very good reason.

Why would you assume that the chunin exam be a curbstomp. We don't even know if the second event will be a disaster or a total success?

Jiraiya hasn't had us do anything to do with the Naruto rescue operation. If he gives us a mission to help sure but I want us to do something on our own

Because I am supremely confident in team uplift and the hivemind. So whenever you have doubts @Kiba believe in me who believes in you

I thought our milk run was at the very least partially tangential to the search for Naruto. I was under the impression that his every waking moment had thoughts of finding Naruto in the back of his mind.

To that end, it probably would be best for us and more importantly Leaf as a whole to continue to become stronger, so the best way to do that would be to continue to create seals that can be used by anyone and drastically increase the users' combat capabilities. Summoning scrolls are nice, but we are still on the clock now. Therefore it's in our best interests to be as efficient with our time as possible which means helping our all of the other people who are also involved in the search.

Step one is the increase our Skywalker production so we can have sorties travel longer missions.

Step two is to create a counter for Skywalkers (I'm thinking cannons that launch those explosive-packed disks to act as flak cannons) so when Skywalkers eventually slip into enemy hands we aren't caught flat-footed.

Step three is to start a telescope industry so each high altitude team can survey more areas without having to endanger themselves whenever they want to search said areas.

Of course, Jiraiya gets the final say in whether or not we should execute this plan, but based on the information I have, this is what I would do after the exams in his position.

I don't think the problem is countering Skywalkers in direct combat so much as detecting Skywalkers; if you're fighting on Skywalkers anywhere within a hundred meters of a stationary target you aim to protect, you've already lost. To this end, chakra radar would be far more useful than flak cannons; there are a hundred interceptors at any given time, but detection is currently completely impossible.

Seals are great, but there's like only 50-60 sealmasters in Konoha. So, you can create increasingly useful and powerful seals, but there's a limit due to logistics.

So, you have skywalkers, anti-skywalker detection and defenses, and God knows what else. This is on top of the explosive tag tax and other kind of seals that is needed to be produced.

Either you train more sealmasters, which take time and manpower, or you find a way to produce more seals without compromising quality.

Yup also for every 15 minutes of use of skywalkers it takes 10-20 minutes of seal masters time to produce. If we add anything else to leafs seal production they won't be able to maintain it.

I hate to put forth this idea, as it's a step closer to Radvic's omnicidal ideation, but prepped implosion seals would be pretty much perfect for flak cannons. You'd only need to blow up one of them to blow up the whole bundle, so civilians could fire them in concert with LBF.

That is a good point: we don't actually know what the bottleneck will be in terms of defending Leaf from aerial assault.

And this is another potential bottleneck: sustainability. There's no point in devoting all of our resources towards Skywalker defense if we leave ourselves more open to a ground assault.

I have the feeling we need more information before we can create a truly effective defense system with the resources, production, and techniques Leaf has. We need to know how much of the defense budget Leaf is willing to spend on this defense (in terms of money, seals, seal-masters' time, etc.), how many total shinobi they are willing to have man it, how large of an area they want defended at a time as well as how many separate locations, and how many of Leaf's researchers we can direct to invent a system that satisfies the former three constraints.

There's also the Chakra Quantification thing we were starting with Kabuto before we left Konoha. We'll need to talk to Noburi about that, too.

Isn't it going to be so hilariously (if) awkward when we rescue Yagura and Naruto? :p

Who in Mist wants Yagura back? I suspect the number of people who wants him back is going to dwindle awfully quickly as the new order in Mist continues to be established.

There's also the Chakra Quantification thing we were starting with Kabuto before we left Konoha. We'll need to talk to Noburi about that, too.

We need to consider the priority of projects and what we should focus on.

I want to have Hazō continue to work on researching beginner seals and work his way up in Leaf's curriculum. Get more books from the Nara library and finish the beginner seals. This could be done at least one day every week?

Then we'll need to consider what combination of high impact/low impact/long term/short term projects we should do. I think Kagome is probably doing something with hot air balloons since we basically suggest a very long list of seals that help with the zeppelin project concept.

Chakra quantification seem to be a long or medium term project to create new tools that help researchers study chakra more precisely. It's not something that Hazō will directly work on, but he could certainly write a proposal about it.

LBF guns is a cool idea, but ultimately bottlenecked by sealmaster productivity.

We could build air rifles without seals, I think. It's purely mechanical, so doesn't need chemistry. All we need is a pump to pressurise air inside a canister.

I want us to capture him so that we can stuff the three tails into a more suitable vessel, like Hazou. After that's done I'm sure there are many people in Mist who would like to get their pound of flesh from him.

I'm fine with all of these suggestions and more, so long as we ask Jiraiya first if these are really good ideas once we explain our reasoning for wanting to do them. That way he can tell us if there is currently a better solution to the problem we are trying to solve, or better yet if a solution already exists.

Actually, step 0 should be touching base with Jiraiya to see what his goals are at the moment and how he intends to go about fulfilling them. If we can offer feedback to him about more effective ways to accomplish his intended goals we should be much better equipped to help him, whatever it is we plan to do. We don't need to know the master plan and all of its details, but what he hopes to accomplish through the actions he's planning to take.

Guys, Naruto is dead.

Sorry to break it like this, but someone had to say it.

True. There's little reason to keep him alive after taking his demon, which by now they have doubtlessly done.

And that's going to stop us how exactly?

Also true. If we're prepared to make the cycle of life and death screech to a halt and then run in reverse for people who aren't our godbrother...
