For the record, I give less than 1:20 odds at this point that Jiraiya was the mastermind behind Minami's death here, and would happily take a bet at those odds. I can go into more detail later, but essentially there are many, many, many different ways Jiraiya could have achieved "Minami dead/silenced" without resorting to this, many of which result in better situations than the one he now finds himself in. If Jiraiya truly has the resources, time, expertise, and motivation to pull this off, he'd need to have been holding the idiot ball up until now.

I'm not seeing them. Anything else would either involve her having an opportunity to communicate with somebody new and thus risk creating a reason for somebody to be suspicious in the first place, or dying in a non-combat situation. Starting from the assumption that she needs to die before she makes it back to Leaf, getting killed in an ambush which can be plausibly pinned on the Yakuza while traumatically convincing the multiple witnesses who have a plausible reason to survive for mind-reading debriefing purposes seems like just about the best option available- especially if it is while she is away from Kagome and with Hazou, who previously saved her from exactly such a plot.

That's really one of the largest points in favor of the theory. It's hard to imagine a better situation for them than what happened, so the chances of it just coincidentally turning out this way are pretty low to start with.

Here's some more stuff we could do now that we're back in Leaf.
  • Rope Tenten into our sealing research to avoid duplication of effort.
  • Check if LBFs work while on a moving/spinning surface. This is important for triggering ZR rifles.
  • Convince Jiraiya to teach Noburi shadow clone. This is something we would run by Noburi first and something I'd recommend saving exp for. With shadow clone, Noburi could impersonate Naruto for purposes of fooling other nations into thinking Leaf still has its jinchurikii or for extra confusing when making the assault on Akatsuki. Not to mention a public excuse to empower his own clan.
  • Figure out something we want from Shikaku. Challenge him to a shogi game by correspondence where we take advantage of the hivemind to make 1 move per update with whatever we wanted as stakes.
  • This might be better to save for later, but if we ever want to do some self promotion, seals that play back recorded sounds seem like they wouldn't be too hard to make and if we make them publicly available, we can put a powerful spin on it about spreading our personal advantages instead of hoarding them, since perfect replication of a sound is something otherwise confined to those with Iron Nerve. A more long term concern: we might want to make public a strict policy of releasing clan secrets to combat the status quo. Something like for every 3 radical developments in sealing we come up with we will make one public, but obviously more calculated than that. Plus it would keep people guessing about what we haven;t revealed yet(would need to be careful about this in times of strife since not pulling every trick could be seen as treasonous).
  • fakeedit: Make an idiot ball seal. Use skywalkers to dump thousands of them over other villages. Actually, with high enough Med Know, Noburi could probably help us come up with some devastating seal effects on the brain, like cancelling how the brain flips everything we see upside down, preventing communication between the left and right hemispheres, the possibilities are endless. Some mix of lightning element and genjutsu might also be relevant.

If Mari was the one who killed Minami, wouldn't she only arrive in Leaf shortly before us at the soonest?
No, since we regrouped, spoke with Jiraiya, and then went back. Mari would have killed Minami and immediately left for Konoha.

If Mari was the one who killed Minami, wouldn't she only arrive in Leaf shortly before us at the soonest?
Likely significantly later: we're only able to make the time we do because of Noburi, which she wouldn't have.

Unless Jiraiya took time out of his (very) busy schedule to infuse Skywalkers for her, she wouldn't have been able to get over water effectively, and she wouldn't have had the defences we have with Kagome.

A few hours to avert a world-ending cascade? I suspect that he could find the time, and that's if a village which is mass-producing enough to equip academy students on local milk-run missions doesn't have a slush to raid.

Well Konoha has enough skywalkers to give to random genin so that's not really an argument against it being a Jiraiya agent. Regardless though acting in any way that we think Jiraiya called the hit in is dangerous. Though if more mysteries events happen that benefit Jiraiyia happen we should update our opinion of him

Edit: also if it wasn't Jiraiya he's was incompetent at his primary job by getting close to a quarter of his network burned. So we can probably assume his Term as Hokage won't go well and should have plans to gtfo

Just a reminder that the academy student in question had no other way to contact us except by using Skywalkers, and thus her use of Skywalkers does not mean that academy students are given Skywalkers on a regular basis.

[X] We're Home

Goals:

1. Take care of business with Jiraiya.
2. Build relationships and stay out of trouble.
3. Research.
4. Train.

Non-binding suggestions:

  • Report to the hokage.
    • Ask to inform the team the details of the debriefing from last time.
      • Make sure the room is secure before doing this.
      • Let Akane or Noburi recount the details.
    • Ask about funeral arrangement for Minami.
    • Ask about getting Kagome therapy.
  • Relationship/Social stuff:
    • Have dinner with Akane's family. Ask her father for permission to date her.
    • Talk to Mari-sensei for political training and advice on building relations with clan kids.
  • Research:
    • Develop a binary encoding scheme for a semaphore system.
    • Look into optics and figure out how to acquire a telescope or sponsor a craftsman.
  • Training:
    • Prepare for the next mission.

Alright, so, the Jiraiya plot, as I understand it, is thus:

  1. Minami has blackmail, and thus needs to die
  2. Chooses to send back Rockfall 2 without telling them any of this
  3. Creates a fake contact location in his network for a jounin to go to in ambush
  4. Places contact in such a position and knows the team well enough that he knows the team will split up
  5. Knows precisely how Minami thinks, and so knows she will send Kagome away and will go herself to the location where the agent was
  6. Has an error in description about the contact (said there was a father and son but the team didn't see any when they arrived)
  7. Instructs jounin agent to use an area of effect poison to attack rather than a decapitation strike on Minami, or any sort of continued subterfuge to isolate her
  8. Knows Minami so well that he knows Minami will attempt a frontal attack instead of working together with the team by retreating and putting up defenses
  9. Spends a significant amount of time in the summon realm before Keiko arrives (either because he can perfectly predict when the jounin agent will attack or has instant communication he hasn't used for anything else for reasons)
  10. Lies about half of his spy network being compromised and fakes reactions. Will require work in the future to perpetuate the lie.
  11. Orders the rest of the team home while continuing to hide his involvement.
So, now, he needs to convince Hazou and team that half of his spy network is compromised, hide and trust agents that he has which can do what Hazou saw, hide any instant communication technique if he has one, gives up any opportunity to leverage Minami politically, wasted at least several hours in the summon realm, risked a jounin agent against Hazou whom he knows has killed Jounin before (indeed, if we had gotten control of Hazou before the update ended, we likely would have killed the jounin with MEW), but has successfully killed Minami. Not to mention, there are apparently a lot more resources that he has at his disposal which he's just choosing not to use for "reasons" I guess.

Now, let's compare this to other options Jiraiya has. First, if he wants to preserve Minami as a lever to use politically.
  1. Speak personally to Minami the moment she got back to barter an alliance between the clans upsetting the balance of power of the Hyuga, earning his clan an ally, turning the opsec breach into a show of trust
  2. Requires that Minami have a high level of loyalty to the Hokage (which, Jiraiya would have selected Minami for before sending her with his adoptive family he may be willing to murder Leaf nin for)
Or, if he doesn't want to turn a liability into an asset, but just silence them:
  1. Send Mari to meet the team when they enter Leaf country.
  2. Have Mari take over and Minami go off on her own to return, where she's ambushed by the jounin Jiraiya has prepared to kill her.
  3. Alternatively, induct her into ANBU and whatever secrecy seals they may have
Or, if he wants to kill her immediately using one of his contacts:
  1. Send a message to a contact with instructions on what to do
  2. Have the contact ask for a bunch of highly urgent help which requires the team to split up, or requires one of Minami's particular jutsu
  3. Have Minami be attacked while alone while helping the civilian
Or, if he wants to kill her as soon as possible:
  1. Tell Rockfall 2 that Leaf would never justify the killing of the civilian sailors, and that Minami must be arrested to comply with the will of fire
  2. Have Noburi drain Minami and send her back to Leaf unconscious
Or, if he's willing to trust his clan that he's doing all this for:
  1. Tell Rockfall 2 that unfortunately, as they needed to kill the civilian sailors for the greater good, so too do they need to silence Minami for the greater good.
  2. Have someone kill Minami in her sleep.
Additionally, the "Jiraiya ordered this hit" scenario is pretty much all presupposed on the idea that Jiraiya can perfectly predict basically everybody's actions, but for some reason, couldn't tell that Hazou was gonna blow clan secrets, and then needed to scramble to pick up the pieces by killing Leaf personnel, rather than by picking Leaf personnel such that they would still be usable when Hazou inevitably blew it, or using his intense personal charm, charisma, and personality reading to turn them to his side.

So, if "Jiraiya needs to kill Minami," it seems like there are many solutions which don't require presupposing extra knowledge, power, agents, and schemes of Jiraiya's, don't require hiding a spy-network from his only true supporters, and don't risk the lives of his jounin agent in combat with Hazou or Kagome blowing everyone up, or any of the other possible things that go wrong with ninja combat.

This is in comparison to the "Yakuza angrily strikes back scenario" which requires:
  1. Yakuza force information out of Tanaka
  2. Uproot contacts and leave a ninja as a surprise to whomever is giving out messages
All of which meshes with their goals and knowledge and fits with Jiraiya's information.

Just a reminder that the academy student in question had no other way to contact us except by using Skywalkers, and thus her use of Skywalkers does not mean that academy students are given Skywalkers on a regular basis.

The village is going to get switched to a skywalker force sooner or later. So I don't find it implausible that academy students or newly graduated genins are being taught how to use skywalkers.

[X] Action Plan: Coming Home

Summary:
  • Report/debrief with the Hokage.
  • Take time to recover.
  • Socialize.
  • Plan for Mari-sensei's birthday.
  • Discuss (with Mari-sensei) telling Jiraiya about Kagome's knowledge.
  • Discuss starting an ice business.
  • Research & train.
Non-Binding Suggestions:
  • Report/debrief with the Hokage.
    • Give him full intel of everything that's happened since our last face-to-face report.
    • Tell Keiko/Kagome about the story Leaf's presenting to the world.
      • Make sure the room is secure, for obvious reasons.
      • Let Akane or Noburi recount the details.
  • Take time to recover.
    • Hazou and Noburi are poisoned with B-class wounds. Go to the hospital, or whatever equivalent Jiraiya approves.
    • The team (well, Hazou at the least) is traumatized from having killed dozens of civilian sailors. Ask if we can do something like therapy.
      • Kagome in particular has an ocean's worth of demons in his closet. Discuss this privately with Mari-sensei or Jiraiya, and then broach the subject with him.
  • Socialize.
    • Make sure Jiraiya and/or Mari-sensei clears these things, based on our technical missing-nin status/rocking the boat.
    • Ask Mari-sensei for a rundown on the movers & shakers in Konoha.
      • Make sure they're cleared to know that we're Leaf-nin now (otherwise the whole thing is pointless).
      • Talk to Akane beforehand to get a better idea of the family.
      • Be polite and keep a positive attitude.
        • This also means to steer conversation away from potentially traumatizing events.
      • Make small-talk:
        • Discuss with Mari-sensei: what sort of things could be talked about?
        • What occupations do the two of you have? Is there anything I can do to help (check with Akane first)?
      • See if Akane or Mari-sensei know some (new) people we should meet. Clan kids, maybe?
      • Try doing:
        • Discuss reading (Nara).
        • Board games (D&D?).
      • MAKE SURE JIRAIYA APPROVES. BECAUSE GUY IS APPARENTLY POLITICAL POISON. SOMEHOW.
      • Philosophy discussion with Guy.
      • Sparring session with Lee.
      • Keiko can chill with Tenten, they have a really good thing going on.
  • Make plans for Mari-sensei's birthday.
    • Her birthday is in a month. A MONTH.
      • Wedding dress/necklace or similar. Add seals?
      • Brooch of aquamarine surrounding ruby.
      • Work with Kagome to make a baby-safe cradle.
  • Discuss (with Mari-sensei) telling Jiraiya about Kagome's knowledge.
    • Avoid OPSEC breaches.
      • Make sure all of this is done privately (anti-spying seals).
      • Don't tell Mari-sensei too much about the mission-related details.
    • Specifically, discuss Akatsuki-related information and the locations of jinchuriki.
    • Only do it with Mari-sensei's approval.
      • What we know:
        • Akatuski originated in the Land of Rain. (this is the important part)
        • They wrote a book of some sort.
        • They were scattered in some fight where Hanzo of the Salamander got killed.
      • Why it's important now.
        • You (Jiraiya) mentioned that Akatsuki might have some sort of weather-control ability.
        • When we first entered the Land of Rain (post-Liberator) Noburi noticed chakra in the rain, which came as if out of nowhere.
        • The Land of Rain is where (Kagome thinks) Akatsuki originated.
      • Conclusion: Is it possible that your paranoia is correct, and that Akatsuki has been tracking our team using this chakra-rain ability?
        • Note: Noburi says he didn't sense chakra in the rain, but it's possible the Akatsuki have some version that dodges this, since we're near Mist, home of the Wakahisa clan.
      • Nine-Tails: Captured by Akatsuki
      • Eight-Tails: Cloud
      • Seven-Tails: ???
      • Six-Tails: ???
      • Five-Tails: Bear
      • Four-Tails: ???
      • Three-Tails: Captured by Akatsuki
      • Two-Tails: Demon (?)
      • One-Tails: Sand
  • Discuss an ice business.
    • Akane has Elemental Mastery and we know from our travels that ice is a valuable commodity.
    • Ask Mari-sensei and Akane, in private, if starting an ice-making business (or just selling ice) could be useful.
      • Useful meaning profitable and building up good reputation with Konoha.
      • Don't overload the market too quickly. Limited trade (e.g., with Akimichi?).
      • Discuss combining with storage seals for continuous profit (in case Akane needs to do long-term missions).
      • Laws against ninjas using jutsu to out-compete civilians.
      • Connection with us as the Cold Stone Killers.
      • Akane's clanless-nin status (would have to give up jutsu knowledge to Konoha).
  • Research & train.
    • DO THE TRAINING PLANS PLEASE WE HAVE SO MUCH XP TO BURN.
    • Research with Noburi: Chakra quantification
      • We don't know if there's been research into this; ask him.
        • Improve combat efficiency.
        • Gives ability for non-sensors to measure their chakra levels.
        • Gives ability for ninja to determine minimum chakra levels to use techniques.
        • Gives ability for ninja to calculate chakra usage during combat (techniques and/or chakra boost).
        • Standardize the "chakra point".
        • Determine amount of chakra used when "chakra boosting" or casting a jutsu.
        • Determine effects of skill on "chakra boosting" or casting a jutsu.
    • Nudge Kagome towards starting on impulse seals and Goo Bombs.
      • Basic book/Nara seals: Focus on seals that reduce casino seal TN.
      • Casino seals.
      • Basic book/Nara seals: All the seals we didn't master.
      • Hidden Mountain seals.
      • Lesser Barrier Formation.
      • Goo Bomb seals.
      • Impulse seals.

4 and 5 are handled by having multiple plans. We only saw the one which ended up being executed. For all we know, the jounin followed the team all the way from Leaf casually watching from above.

6 means very little. There not being the correct people at a location clearly isn't a prescribed reason for calling off a meet. All it does is make him look more innocent, and it probably matches the records of the location's previous history in the network.

7 and 8 could easily have been a call made by the agent (Mari) on-site. J already knows most of the team's abilities, and Mari is intimately familiar with everything about them to the point of effective telepathy. She would naturally receive a briefing about Minamai's capabilities and be able to make the same calculation about the appropriate course of action that Minami did in that situation, assuming that she didn't plant the idea in her head in the first place. A jounin infiltration, CQC, and genjutsu expert being confident about being able to predict or at least adapt to the team's actions while knowing that time and terrain are on her side isn't much of stretch.

9. He spent three hours prior to the scheduled check-in time. He knew the timing because the check-ins were scheduled and the team's travel itinerary was pretty predictable. If it turned out that something had changed and the hit hadn't occurred yet playing his vacation off as "the only chance I've had to relax in weeks" would be simple enough, while being there in advance if it did go to schedule to cancel the mission makes him look more innocent.

10. The amount of work necessary is debatable. The team's open withdrawal from the city already unacceptably compromised the asset, so he and everything he knew was going to have to be written off or deeply reorganized anyway. Even if it meant faking a hit to his network, the cost could easily still be worth it. After all, the only person either capable of or positioned to audit it well enough to unequivocally detect the lie would be himself. Most of this would be identical to the "sub-commander 'X' has been compromised, execute plan 'Y'" orders he would have to give anyway after Goda's capture.

J already ruled out anything dependent on pressuring Minami. Whatever he has planned absolutely depends on that clan having absolutely nothing over him. It's not enough that he has more than they do. He needs to be bulletproof for this to work. This suggests that it isn't something the clan is going to like, or at least is something which they will like a lot less than an alternative they could force him into if they had the opportunity. A (probably very high-ranking considering his habit of building the team's relationships with heirs) clanmember with devastating blackmail on him? Completely unacceptable. She would likely be willing to kill herself for the good of her clan, much less suck up whatever he could get over her personally. You don't get to be the most successful spymaster in the world by trusting people with things which can destroy the entire world if you can possibly avoid it.

Sending his new wife, who doesn't officially exist, on a mission, despite her being retired, to separate the team from its leader for some reason only for said leader to end up murdered in an ambush in Leaf territory there is no plausible explanation for and of which the only witness can't testify under mind-reading without incriminating herself? That's far more suspicious than what happened.

ANBU would require Minami's cooperation, and likely the assent of her clan. It might be very difficult to convince everybody involved to let the clan heir forsake all clan loyalties, especially if nobody involved is allowed to know why or even talk to each other for reasons which can't be discussed. We don't even know if cursed seals are a thing in this universe, and even in the canon universe they weren't standard for ANBU.

Minami being killed while alone is inferior to what happened, because there are no witnesses who can testify to it under mind-reading. That may have been one of the contingencies prepared, but it'd be awfully difficult to ensure when the leader is putting the mission first and is perfectly happy to tell the civilians no instead of risking it.

Tell the team a blatant lie, then have them deliver her into custody, at which point the clan-ninja conveniently dies in custody with no witnesses before getting the chance to talk to anybody? That's "shot himself six times in the back of the head and then jumped in the river with cement shoes on" levels of suspicious.

Having Rockfall do the killing runs into all the same problems Keiko laid out to Kagome. The point here is to get Minami dead on the mission while having the natural suspects be able to testify under mind-reading completely sincerely that she was just an unfortunate casualty.

@faflec some thought on your plan
Why are we wasting time with Akane's dad? He's a political nobody and doesn't really matter to our goals. We won no need to deal with him unless he presents problems

Meeting with team gai by themselves gets us what politically? Gai is poison apparently and lee and TenTen are clan less. Neji is... Neji. Unless we are planning to bring TenTen and lee into the clan seems like mostly wasted time.

When we go to the hospital need to apologize to Kabuto. He's a super valuable ally that we need to get on our side. Also I really want to start working on vaccine research.

For Mari's present I suggest coordinating with Ino and Akane to go shopping together.

Also make sure we get Kagome working on impulse seals

@faflec We ain't going to have Noburi or Akane relates to the last debriefing session?

Also, I put down meeting with Akane's dad as "have dinner with Akane's family".

  • Akane's dad: Us going around him would make him angry (at Hazou) and cause him to put pressure on Akane (to not see Hazou). Akane cares about her dad and his opinions so this would make her sad. I do not want Akane sad.
  • Guy: This was mostly a way for Keiko to interact with Tenten, someone she enjoys the company of. I'm not 100% on doing it anyway, and would not remove it if other people object.
  • Kabuto: I was under the impression we already apologized to him? Anyway if you could link some ideas on how to do vaccine research I'd be happy to include it.
  • Mari: Wouldn't mind adding it.
  • Kagome: Noted.
