Well I thought that referred to the Goda mission since all the other questions where in regards to that. Even if it was the courier mission we will be in the area afterwards. He didn't say no just not now. So that means speed is even more important
*re-reads*

Yeah good point. Feel like a badger but I figure we could ask him again after we finish up the courier, unless he has another relevant mission for us.

She didn't talk out loud and the team has less time to reflect on Minami's arguments.

Also, it's a waste of breath when we could be planning our next move. Minami still have trust issues, but that cannot be resolved until someone took a metaphorical kunai for her.

Minami explicitly stated that identifying the Pangolins would blow their cover. Keiko then interjected but completely failed to point out the issues with identifying the Pangolins. I don't have issues with things not going our way but I do have a problem when every member of our team failed to point out how difficult it would be to identify the Pangolins. It simply doesn't make sense.

It may be difficult to identify the Pangolins or not. Humans are terribly at figuring out what we're good at remembering and what we're not.

Interrogation would let us find out, but absent a mean of blocking short term memory, we just blow our OPSEC.

It just seems ridiculous that Minami is essentially viewing the identification of a summons that hasn't been seen in 400 years, which is shrouded in mist, as a fairly trivial thing and nobody is pointing out any issues with that. This isn't a complicated argument. I don't see how literally every member of our team can miss it.

They are simulated by a single author....

  • It's not that difficult for sailors to describe a figure, even if they themselves don't know what it is. 60-some sailors giving vague details? It's certainly possible for a rather accurate sketch of the Pangolins to be made.
  • Summons in the Seventh Path know Pangolins exist, know they've existed for a while, and (in some cases) are actively warring against them. Unless my model of the Elemental Nations is fuckin' borked, I'd imagine that the Great 5 would have their own Summons on the Seventh Path.
  • Sudden military activity of Pangolins, which haven't had a summoner for the past 4 centuries? Yup, they're going to take note and update their knowledge of Pangolins to try to find the new summoner (to kill them and take the contract). This was seen during one of the Interludes, where we see Toad and Pangolin Clan members discussing sudden Condor Clan aggression, which led the Pangolins to realize that the Condor Summoning Scroll had been found.

If the argument is that the issue is because the author insufficiently simulated the characters, then you should agree that the author made a mistake and should resimulate with the new information. I don't care what the end result is, the dialogue just doesn't make sense as it stands.

Okay, so we're assuming that summons that are at the epicenter of dense clouds of mist remain easy to identify? That seems somewhat unlikely. I'll give you that the Yakuza could certainly determine a general idea of what the summons look like, but I really don't buy that they could narrow down that they were specifically Pangolins and not some other summon. In particular, I don't believe that they could identify if it was some sort of lizard summon, an armadillo summon, or specifically the Pangolins.

You're still sort of missing my point, however. It's not that I think it would be impossible to identify the Pangolins and to then identify that the Pangolin summoner is affiliated with Leaf (although I do believe that both of those things would be quite difficult). The thing that I take the most issue with is that nobody on Team Uplift pointed these things out.

I don't really care to argue this more.

Here's a basic plan that does nothing but what the mission entails, plus a (mostly-empty) conversation with Akane. Obviously it's boring as shit. Feedback and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

[X] Action Plan: Rationalization

Goals:
  • Survive.
  • Maintain a positive mindset.
  • Continue the mission.
  • Reassure the team.

Methods:
  • General:
    • Follow Akane's lead while she's our sub-team leader. Follow Minami's lead before we leave, and after we regroup.
    • Try to avoid triggering Minami's insecurities.
      • She's team leader, but she inherited a team who treats her as an outsider. Avoid reminding her of this.
    • When moving, minimize chatter in favor of alertness.
  • Main Questline:
      • (Almost) nonstop 15-16hr run back.
      • Break only when we need to replace Skywalkers.
        • Take this time to replenish chakra, food, and water.
        • Noburi should check on the prisoners to ensure they are alive but chakra-drained. Unconscious if appropriate.
          • First ask Noburi if there are consequences to keeping them unconscious/chakra-drained for this long. If there is no issue, suggest we do this.
        • If SOP, slightly hydrate the prisoners.
          • Check based on standard for prisoner exchange (MInami/Jiraiya should have said something offscreen) and Noburi's knowledge as a medic.
      • First time we get the chance, check Goda & his retinue for false teeth/cyanide capsules/other suicide methods.
        • (DON'T SAY OR SUGGEST THIS OUT LOUD) Just in case Minami missed it. She did seem out of it.
      • If we MUST stop to sleep, set up a Skytower and sleep. Keep shifts.
      • Drop off Goda and his ninja bodyguards. Also give the intel we recovered.
        • Ask if they want us to wake them up via chakra water.
      • If prompted, give a mission debriefing.
      • Collect weapons & food supplies.
        • See if we can get a spyglass or telescope. Ask Mari-sensei or Jiraiya if we get the chance to talk with them.
      • Take some time to rest after our run. Keep shifts.
        • If allowed, sleep in Konoha. Our old apartment, or estate if Jiraiya bought it.
        • If not allowed, head a ways to our destination, set up a Skywalker, and then sleep.
      • Skywalk back to the team.
        • It's a 22 hour run (to Nagi Island, on average). Don't exhaust ourselves with a second all-nighter.
  • Reassure Team Uplift before we leave.
    • Be respectful. Don't be tactless, not here.
      • People died, and that sucks.
      • I want to focus on the positive: we accomplished what we set out to do.
        • Keiko, you demonstrated just how powerful and useful your pangolins are, exactly as you said they would be.
        • Noburi, you dealt with that situation with surgical precision: no non-combatants were killed in the takedown and you effortlessly captured two experienced ninja with no risk to our team.
        • We didn't mess up and accidentally kill Goda despite the fight between several Chunin or better combatants.
      • Given our status as a heavy-combat squad I don't know if we could have done any more.
      • BUT as we get stronger and stronger, we'll gain the skill and ability to do better, and next time hopefully have other options than hurting innocents.
    • If we've already left, do this with Akane and Noburi first, and then repeat with Keiko and Kagome when we get back.
  • Complete an After-Action Report.
    • Do the report after we regroup with the team, as time permits.
    • Keep in mind Minami still considers us to be the Cold Stone Killers/outsiders.
      • Disguising our trump card usages so we might not need to kill witnesses
        • Disguise Pangolins using physical coverings or Henge. Ask Pangolins in future?
        • Apply Mist first, then Pangolins attack while LOS is blocked using Mist.
      • Timing between the air-team landing and the boat team?
        • Not a problem this time, but could have been one if the enemy was stronger.
        • Learn Whispers on the Wind, useful for signaling for ambush.
        • Maybe have Panda be part of the air-team and be unsummoned beforehand as a signal?
      • Better knowledge of the Pangolin's personal combat ability for better diagnosis of enemy ninja capabilities.
  • Talk with Akane.
    • Do this after we've handed off the prisoners and have time to talk. Preferably in a private setting, maybe before we re-join the main group.
    • Be open but respectful. Don't be tactless, not here.
    • Talk about our (Hazou's) feelings regarding what happened.
      • We feel guilty because our long-term plans revolved around changing the system, yet despite that we are now we're complicit in executing dozens of civilians.
      • We understand why it was done (increased risk of Leaf's rivals finding out), but still hate that we chose killing innocents over the risk of serious failure.
      • We're scared that we'll give up, grow disillusioned, and/or end up becoming just another part of the system.
    • Ask her about Guy's philosophy and YOUTH.
      • How does she reconcile this with what happened?
      • What would Guy do? What would Lee?
    • Give her a hug. Best girlfriend deserves it, and more.
  • (Optional) Meet Mari-sensei.
    • Do this ONLY if we are cleared to stay in Konoha for sleep, and get the opportunity.
    • Give her a hug.
    • Tell her we missed her.
    • Ask her how things have been going in Konoha.
      • Her befriending of the clan head wives.
      • The political situation.
      • Jiraiya's...Ask if Jiraiya's alright.
    • Ask if she thinks Jiraiya'll let us do some work to find Hana, after the mission's over.

Contingencies:
  • (While transporting the prisoners) If we see someone in the air:
    • IMMEDIATELY dive onto the ground and use the local terrain to cover our escape.
    • Try to evade their ability to find us before heading back to Konoha.
    • If this seems impossible (they are gaining on us) let Akane make the decision to go to Konoha, continue running, or fight.

Do we have time to talk about the political situation/what's going on in Leaf with Mari?
No idea. According to Minami/Jiraiya's orders we're to drop the prisoners off at Konoha's gates, get supplies, and continue on our mission. If we're allowed to sleep in Konoha (and we should, if we're doing a 16hr straight run back) we might have the ability after we wake up. Otherwise we're stuck with sending her letters alongside Keiko's Pangolin messages to Jiraiya, and asking her then.

Here's a basic plan that does nothing but what the mission entails, plus a (mostly-empty) conversation with Akane. Obviously it's boring as shit. Feedback and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

[X] Action Plan: Rationalization

Thoughts:

1. Is it practical for Noburi to keep them Chakra-drained if we're also constantly running? Do we need contingencies for if the ninja try anything?

2. Who should actually carry Goda? That person has priority to continue if "something happens", while the other two play distraction/blocker. (Probably just toss the kunoichi if necessary... the fall will kill them.) Actually, I guess that would logically have to be Noburi, as it's only possible to keep up the pace with his chakra water.

3. Should we actually search Goda? Minami fucked up by specifically not doing so. I mean, what if he has a suicide pill or something? Or if Konan has him tagged with a paper doll.... I mean, who the hell knows?!

4. Make sure that if we can actually report, the desire of our bouncer contact for extraction is communicated. If this pays out, Leaf owes him.

  1. We still need to replace Skywalkers every ~15 minutes or so, and while we've probably gotten good at replacing them it'll probably take a minute or two. I figured if we're stopping Noburi may as well poke them with a wet finger to absorb their chakra.
  2. It won't matter. If something happens, it means we're in a fight against the Condor Summoner or Akatsuki. Either one of them is going to murder us so hard Yagura would be jealous.
  3. Minami's monologue says "She looked down at the bodies she was mechanically stripping of their equipment, but they held no answers for her"; presumably that means anything of value on Goda or the ninjas were removed.
  4. We already told Jiraiya this in the last message we sent to him.

here, have a plan or something:

[X] Action Plan: Sleep Is For The Weak
Objectives:
  • Keep Team Uplift Plus One alive.
  • Keep Team Uplift Plus One functional
  • Keep ourselves oriented to our goal.
  • Keep our teammates oriented to our goal, and shut down unproductive thoughts.
  • Continue the mission.
Actions:
  1. Set off for Leaf village with the captives in tow.
    1. Remind the other team to be careful about their chakra use. Run out thousands of feet in the air without an easy way to replenish it is a Bad Thing.
      1. Tell them we're likely to reach the rendezvouz in two to three days.
    2. Ensure they are secured.
      1. This means unable to form handseals, see, hear, or talk.
      2. Have Noburi take a moment during a break to ensure that Goda can't commit suicide by false teeth, poisoned fingernails or whatnot.
    3. Do not stop to sleep.
      1. If Noburi needs a chakra source, he can drain the two kunoichi as we go along to provide extra chakra.
      2. If we stop to eat, make sure our prisoners have something to drink, and maybe a bite to eat. Ensure that they can be interrogated.
    4. Stay calm. You don't gain anything from a depressive spiral, and besides, they are sixty more promises to carry out your ambition.
      1. You don't have to repress your emotions, but don't stop moving unless you're taking a break.
    5. Noburi carries Goda, Hazou carries the girl that oneshot the Sustainer, and Akane carries her sister.
  2. Talking with our teammates
    1. If they say how could Minami kill those civilians, respond that we understand her viewpoint, why it's wrong, and encourage them to take this as further motivation. DO NOT SAY THIS IN FRONT OF MINAMI
      1. Her mistake was treating civilian lives as a nonfactor - what to do with them was always assumed to be execution, because any infinitesimal risk was too much.
      2. Saying civilian lives are effectively worthless compared to ninja lives is just plain wrong, and goes a long way to explaining why the Liberator was so popular.
      3. This nonchalance towards civilian deaths is exactly what we agreed to stop in that cave all those weeks ago, sitting by a campfire. We swore to make this better, and we are not abandoning the path now because we encountered some difficulty! We agreed that it was reprehensible there, so don't stop seeing it as reprehensible here! We'll aim to fix this all by doing what we can.
      4. If they want reasoning for how more civilian lives could have been saved, point out that we literally picked the point furthest from the coastline, had the pangolins bust into the lower decks despite having Noburi's abilities, and didn't try to disguise pangolin involvement in any way save the fog.
    2. If they say something like how all shinobi should die, stop them. (this includes us, by the way.)
      1. Chakra beasts roam outside the walls of every hamlet, village, and city. To ignore them is the direst of threats, and to argue for killing all the shinobi would be an argument to end all civilization.
      2. Shinobi have vastly greater powers than simply destruction. Destruction is easy, but chakra makes construction far easier than without. To destroy all farming implements because some wield them as weapons of war would be stupid - but here we are, arguing for the destruction of all high chakra entities.
      3. Just because shinobi are worth something doesn't mean that civilians are worth an infinitesimal amount in comparison, however. That's largely the mistake Minami made.
    3. If they ask us how we are so calm about this, refer to 2.1, or "how is Minami okay with this?"
    4. Remind everyone they did well under the circumstances. DO THIS BEFORE WE SEPERATE! Tell everyone barring extreme circumstances we'll have the full AAR at the rendezvouz site.
      1. The loss of life was really bad, and is something we're going to fight to avoid in the future during planning rather than post battle.
        1. We probably could have avoided killing all of them if we planned to save some as a subgoal, but it was our collective mistake not to treat minimizing civilian deaths as a subgoal during the planning phases.
      2. However, rather than let us be crippled by doubt and depression, we choose to take a lesson from this, and steel our resolve towards our goal - uplift.
      3. Our strength here was in the combat section - we pulled that off flawlessly.
        1. Keiko, your summoning abilities surpassed our expectations. We're proud of you.
        2. Noburi, you executed a near perfect nonlethal takedown of dozens of enemy combatants, including shinobi, of unknown abilities. This achievement cannot be overstated.
      4. You guys were brilliant, and pulled off the plan flawlessly.
  3. Arrival
    1. Hand off the captives.
      1. Ask if they want us to revive them now with chakra water.
    2. Give a debriefing if ordered too.
      1. Mention how the bouncer wants an apartment in Konoha for his services, along with his daughter.
    3. Go to sleep. If there are no places inside Konoha that will take us, go sleep a distance away from the city.
    4. In the morning, pick up some food and weapon supplies.
  4. Rendezvouz
    1. If sleeping outside the city, remember to take shifts. Obviously this is a bad possibility, but a necessary one.
    2. Run for as long as you can before either sixteen hours have passed or Noburi has run down to a liter of water.
      1. Refill on chakra from other sources when we stop.
    3. Sleep in shifts. If we had to sleep in shifts before, last night's first shift is up first, then last shift is up for midnight shift, and then midnight shift is up for last shift.
    4. Finish running to the rendezvouz point.
  5. After Action Report:
    1. We failed to really put thought into how much risk we were willing to take in exchange for how many civilian lives - therefore, by default we assumed no risk could be taken.
      1. It wasn't just "attack in the harbor or not", but even smaller things like "we need to attack the maximum distance from shore" rather than "we attack close to the shore but out of the city's detection radius", and the fact that we considered killing them all rather than simply a majority, and leaving the ones who didn't see us to shipwreck on the shore.
    2. We didn't put enough thought into concealing our trump cards:
      1. Mist Drain
      2. Pangolins
      3. Skywalkers
    3. The timing was off between the air team and the boat team. We need to practice HALO jumping.
    4. Aside from the OPSEC and civilian lives problem, we pulled that off without a hitch.
  6. Contingencies:
    1. If we see shinobi on the horizons above the clouds, drop as fast as we can while keeping the hostages intact and hide. We do not want to be seen by Akatsuki or the Pangolin Summoner.
      1. If we're near Konoha, attempt to make a break for it. They might be skywalker Leaf troops, but ground level is probably safe.

[X] Action Plan: Rationalization

This is largely what I had in mind...

A few things, @faflec
1. Might be worth mentioning that chatter should be kept to a minimum during the transport phase, keeping alertness in mind.
2. I'm almost certainly being paranoid, but I'm wondering if we should have Noburi check Goda's mouth for a false tooth containing a cyanide capsule, because I'm having this nightmare vision of this all being for nought. Mind you, yakuza aren't likely so loyal to their organization that they'd be willing to die for it - they're criminals, after all, so driven by self-interest rather than group-interest.
3. This might be something covered by standard prisoner transport procedures that our characters are already familiar with, but it might be a good idea to keep Goda and the ninja girls hydrated so they're in decent health when we arrive. Just a bit of water on some of our stops, so there's no risk of them being in poor condition for interrogation.
4. Might want to ask the ANBU if we should give a bit of chakra water to the prisoners before we leave so that they're conscious immediately, rather than having T&I have to wait for them to wake up.

It won't matter. If something happens, it means we're in a fight against the Condor Summoner or Akatsuki. Either one of them is going to murder us so hard Yagura would be jealous.

That seems awfully dismissive of unknown unknowns. What kind of things can fly in this crazy world? Who the hell knows? If sky squid are out there, a bigger chakra beast could show up. Or maybe there's a ninja from some minor village who has the ability to fly in some manner. I'm just saying, a little clarity on who is carrying Goda wouldn't hurt. Either we decide or the QMs do.
Minami's monologue says "She looked down at the bodies she was mechanically stripping of their equipment, but they held no answers for her"; presumably that means anything of value on Goda or the ninjas were removed.

To which I quote back:
["Not that we were able to find," Keiko said. "I would surmise that any other valuables, such as money, would be kept on Goda's person. Since you have already bound him… very professionally, it may be best to leave a full body search until he reaches Leaf."]

Look at it this way... is it in Gado's self-interest to be tortured by a rival Yakuza clan for information and then be killed... or is it in his self-interest to take the quick way out?

In other words, yeah, check for that false tooth.

Not the point. If you are worried about him having one, you have your med-nin actually open his mouth (while he's unconscious) and check to see if one of his teeth are fake. T&I will ungag him at some point, so we don't want him using the option if he has it when that happens.
ah, okay, changing.

My plan calls for Goda and his bodyguards to all be unconscious but fine I'll check for a poison tooth. Also added @Enjou's ideas since I can't find a particular reason to not do them.
Here's a basic plan that does nothing but what the mission entails, plus a (mostly-empty) conversation with Akane. Obviously it's boring as shit. Feedback and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Omake: Another Sixty Promises

It was a beautiful day. The sun was setting above the clouds, a magnificent rolling white landscape gently rolling providing a floor for the breathtaking vista.

The crimson, blood red sunset over the deathly white turbulence.

Hazou breathed. He could not dwell on this, nor could he dwell on those

- sixty civilians bound and gagged -
- several blood red flashes -
- bloody smears on the deck -

In. Out.

Hazou knew this wasn't his fault - but it was -, and that the best thing he could do was focus. Lock his face in the Iron Nerve, and his hands and feet and shivering arms and legs into a smooth run because - Honami's child would never run - otherwise he'd stop and think and let the memories and the fire and the blood and the tears running off his face catch up and he couldn't handle that right now.

Left. Right. Fifty four. Fifty five.

He had lost count of how many hundreds, when Noburi, tears whipping behind him as he pushed himself forward, choked out to Hazou:

"How are you so calm?"

"Noburi!"

"Because otherwise I'll stop and ask why I'm still running. I'll stop and ask, what's worth it all? But when I'm running, when I'm moving, when I sear all the painful memories into my mind and body, I remember each and every promise.

The promise we made to Shikigami-sensei that we would grow strong.

The promise we made to the village in Iron after we left the Swamp, promising them not to oppress them because we could.

The promise we made to that team in Iron, when none of us, including them, got injured or shortchanged, because we would make negotiation work.

The promise we made to all the villagers in all the little hamlets, that we would stop and take time out of our day to help them.

The promises we made to that clan in Mountain, that we would make a world safe for Mountain to come out of its shell.

The promise that we made to ourselves in a cave, telling us that we would not stand for scorch squads, that no matter how difficult it got, we would grow strong, strong enough to end scorch squads.

The promise we made to Honami and her unborn child, that we would not be so careless with the lives of others in the future, that we would strive to make a world where they wouldn't be threatened by our mistakes.

The promise we made to Joutarou, that we'd find a way to make good faith negotiations easier than hostility and violence, make it easier to compromise rather than go to lethal force. That we'd think before jumping.

The promise that as a Kurosawa, I would stand against the darkness, to hold the line.

The sixty promises to those sixty civilians that we would make this world a better one.

To make this world a rival of the Pure World they're headed to."

Silence reigned. Hazou breathed, as the sky faded from a crimson red to a darkening blue, and the lights began to shine.

The lights were disparate as they ran onwards, in silence, gradually growing brighter and closer together, until they reached Konohagakure, the Village Hidden in the Leaves, a shining beacon against the night, bathed in a sea of lights.

"May you rest in peace, and your deaths spur me to push back the darkness itself."
