First of all, I really need to be NOT checking this thread; tomorrow's chapter of The Tinker's Daughter isn't writing itself. Still, this is too engaging.

It was an insanely lucky roll. Literally 99% of encounters Hazou is in will go worse than this one.
We should NOT repeat such gambles. 1% chance of success is insanely low.

[well-done summary of probabilities based on relative numbers of dice]

It wasn't as insane as all y'all seem to be thinking. As you point out, having more dice makes a big difference; I've added the graphical summary that @AugSphere did into the Player Knowledge document, under the "Chances of winning a skill challenge" section.

Now, as to why it wasn't such a miracle as you think: how many dice did each person in the challenge have?

Wait a minute... That threadmark... "Say hello, Twitch?"

Did any of the GMs by chance read the stories of the All-Guardsman Party?

Yesterday(? the day before?...) @Jackercracks says to me "hey, you should totally read The All-Guardsmen Party, and model the [then-unnamed] Black Hunter on Twitch." I said "well, I'm really busy and need to stay focused so I can get The Tinker's Daughter written, and so I don't have time to read anything in-depth but I'll give it a skim". A day or so later I've got "The Xenotech Heresy" open in another tab and I'm struggling to stay focused on what I should be doing. And yes, he's based on Twitch; the character was just too amusing not to use. I don't find it plausible that you'll get him to join the party but, if you do, I am so looking forward to having him set up a perimeter every night, no matter where you are.

Also, +1 XP for having good taste in reading matter and making your Awareness check.

Well, that was intense. Glad we got very very lucky.

Not as lucky as you think. See above response to @HyperCatnip.

Two questions we should probably settle:
1. Will Kagome kill us?
2. How can we best get Kagome stuff for those beautiful seals levels?

On the first, I think it possible, but having settled Kagome into the "crazy but friendly? towards us" category, we only really need to worry about him accidentally killing us, or thinking we betrayed him. Or thought about betraying him. Or it's Tuesday. Hopefully that's unlikely. We definitely will need CONSTANT VIGILANCE when dealing with him though... mostly so we can make sure he tells us things like having wired the whole city to explode in thirty seconds. I'm willing to accept a 5%ish risk of Kagome accidentally killing us in return for good seal training.

+1 XP for GM laughter.

  1. We have limited time, we'll be pushing against the week time limit to get the paper alone.

Note that ninja can run 30mph for up to 10 hours a day for long periods. The continent isn't that big; nothing in the EN is very far away on timescales of a few days / a week.

Given that Kagome is probably at least inspired by Twitch

He is.

Thanks to @Twofold for all of this: Obviously we can't actually train Sealing since we haven't gotten Kagome-sensei's help yet but we can level Intelligence which is the attribute prerequisite. So we'd basically be improving Intelligence to 5 (28XP) and hold the remaining 10XP until we get training + hoping for 4XP more from missions (e.g., getting the supplies) to get level 5 Sealing. Training would look something like this:

Intelligence 2 [4]
Intelligence 3 [10]
Intelligence 4 [18]
Intelligence 5 [28]
Save 11XP

Of course we could also spend more XP to improve our chances of success by adding a point in Awareness (9XP); this would give us Intelligence 5 and Awareness 9 (max) while saving 2XP. While it requires us to get 13XP just to max our Sealing as-is I personally doubt that will be especially difficult, so we'd end up with this sort of setup:

Intelligence 2 [4]
Intelligence 3 [10]
Intelligence 4 [18]
Intelligence 5 [28]
Awareness 9 [37]
Save 2XP

Not sure which is the better plan: spending XP only on Sealing gives us more flexibility for later since we might have enough to buff Sealing even more, but adding points in Awareness gives us greater effects against Deception and Stealth rolls which might be needed for trade or noticing people following us/chakra monsters.

Thoughts?

I feel obliged to remind everyone that Hazou is in a deathworld.
We can only enjoy benefits of sealing if we live long enough to actually level it up.

I also notice that intelligence doesn't increase our survival chances directly.
I actually want to immediately spend all XP on survival-critical skills like stealth and awareness, but fear that it may be shortsighted and stunt us wnen time comes to get sealing.

So, I think we are better off buying an awareness point right away.
We probably should buy some more survival options, but I'm not sure which ones.

It's more a matter of the number of borders people want to infiltrate through than anything else. Ninja are speedy.

Edit: If there weren't any other ninja in the way it would be perfectly possibly to commute to Sound from Iron for work each morning. Bit of a chakra waste mind, but doable.

@Chronic I know we can't do it RN but if we get the chance during the next update it would be a good idea to write up. It's not like we lose anything from not planning it out since if we can't level it GMs will just ignore the plan, but if we can it'd be great to get stuff down quickly.

@HyperCatnip Most of the threats we've seen are either below our level or above it. Hazou was able to walk into a forest, alone, into a place he knew was dangerous as fuck, and only lost rolls against the well-hidden crab-monsters and Kagome-sensei. Which means us, plus our allies, plus Inoue-sensei, should have no real trouble against chakra monsters.

Against ninjas we're screwed even if we spend all our XP on Awareness (39XP spent gives us Awareness 10, plus the prerequisites for Awareness 11-12):
Awareness 9 [9]
Wits 4 [17]
Awareness 10 [27]
Resolve 3 [33]
Stamina 3 [39]

So we can either prep Sealing for whenever we get back to Kagome-sensei (next update or the one after) and lose out on 1 Awareness, or focus purely on Awareness and gain only a single extra point's worth.

@faflec I suggest you add an order of priority to things we want to acquire. Chakra Ink and paper are a must. Otherwise the guy can't really teach us anything. Everything else is kinda extraneous and we can probably supplement them with something cheaper. I mean, cacao and tea are definitely luxury items that have to be imported from warmer climates. This being a deathworld they will be exquisitely expensive. Generally I doubt we can acquire anything in the quantities demanded, except maybe the teapot and bread (sorry no raisins).

That being said, Inoue probably has a money stash she hasn't mentioned to us. This here would be an excellent investment for her. Might be a good time to use our puppy dog eyes on her.

Technique Hacking sounds super interesting for Keiko but I think we need her to have some Jutsu first before she can actually hack them. First order of business would be to have Inoue teach her a wind jutsu. Preferably something long range and AOE, but I suppose Inoue will know best.

If we are super worried about our safety we could buy Awareness 9 now, I think it's one of those skills that can be trained while doing other stuff. The danger this time was that we were alone in the wilderness, with our full team we don't have THAT much to fear and Inoue is pretty solid as a safety blanket. But really, we need to save XP for sealing and buy it while we still can.

This thing about Samurai worries me. Mostly because it will draw the eyes of every major ninja village in to Iron and that's not really good for us. There will be a lot of splash damage once the villages decide to stamp it down and by that time we should be far away from Iron as we possibly can. Maybe take our sealing buddy with us? We should think about this more later.

So, why is Sealing an Intelligence skill when we could (for example) ask Kagome to hold our hand and trace a complex seal for us that we in no way understand but can reproduce perfectly? I get how "constructing seals that do new things" is Intelligence, but there should be a new category for how we do things.

@Swimmingly Sealing is two parts: blank drawing and seal infusion. We have half the part (making the blank) but actually infusing the seal into something that actually does stuff is something we don't know, and probably requires intelligence. Probably.

@Twofold Thanks, and I've edited in the training plan + your other suggestions below:
Ok, our job is twofold: get shit for Kagome-sensei and figure out where the cultists are headed. Hopefully we can do both at once, so...

[X] Plan The FedEx Quest:
  • Go back to Inoue and tell her what happened. Full mission report, full disclosure.
    • See if she knows anyone called Kagome who knew someone called Kawaguchi (probably dead in sealing fuckup), and matching the facial description Hazou saw. Also ask about Hamasaki since that's a name that isn't obviously important. See if the guy has any particular beef/bad encounter with Mist.
    • Interesting quotes Kagome-sensei said include:
      • "I'll give it to you right in your godsdamned pie hole, you stinking ninja stinker"
      • "You want my face to burn off and the tentacles to grow out my ears and use my arms like puppet arms as I slowly melt into a puddle of reeking goo that I have to clean up with a mop"
      • "until you decide to send me off into the middle of nowhere with a group of fumble-fingered jackasses who won't keep their godsdamned hands off the face-melting unholiness"
      • "If you mess with me, I'll blow you to the Summoned Realm."
      • "Mess with me and I'll squash you into meat jelly"
  • Get back to the village before the caravan leaves, and ask both them and the villagers if they have anything from the shopping list.
    • Put priority on paper and chakra ink because they are most needed for training. The other things Kagome-sensei wants are luxury/extraneous goods that are valuable but not required. Still wanna get them, though.
    • Offer meat, furs (from wolves in the forest), pots, and murder of chakra monsters (for the villagers).
    • Ask the villagers if they know how to make bread w/ raisins, if they have the supplies. We can get -really- fresh bread at their place if they can.
    • Ask the traders if they've seen any of the supplies in towns they've been at previously.
    • Ask the traders where they'd go if they wanted those supplies.
  • Figure out which direction and town the wanderers are headed to, based on the traders' and villagers' knowledge and the maps we've gotten.
  • Head out to a nearby town/large village!
    • We want the place to be nearby (several hours travel maximum) and be large enough to have everything we need, but we don't need it to be the largest city to avoid ninja presence. Yuni apparently is a great place to travel but we should go to the place with the highest chance of success based on our/traders'/villagers' knowledge.
    • If possible the place should be in the same direction as the wanderers' travel direction so we can kill two birds with one stone. We're mostly looking for information and keeping track of their movements moreso than an actual interrogation.
    • Prepare furs, meat, pots, fish for travel. Put them in a storage scroll for traveling, then unseal when we arrive.
    • Put on a new Henge, one that we haven't made before. Figure out a coverstory beforehand that makes sense with our plan. Examples include:
      • Hunters
      • Refugees
      • Straight up ninja-bandits
      • Samurai
      • Caravan Guards (actually join the caravan)
      • Ninja from Mist
      • Ninja from another hidden village
      • Messengers from a ninja village
      • Crazy Hermits
      • Prophets
  • Get the shit we need.
    • Find and buy everything useful we can, trading for ryo (if we have any) and the trade goods we brought with us.
      • Also offer to help around in exchange for stuff.
    • There's no reason to not get extras in case some stuff isn't to Kagome-sensei's liking (chocolate, tea). Get a bit extra, in different varieties to make sure he doesn't hate it. We're sucking up to him, hard.
    • For things that aren't available or would be awkward to ask for (like chakra ink) see if we can figure out where to get it, or get ingredients to make it ourselves, as possible.
    • See if the cultists are in the town or passed by it. Make a note of what they've done.
    • Go to another village and repeat until we have the shit.
  • Make suggestions for our teammates to train:
    • Both our teammates should make Awareness a good priority, though perhaps not to the extent as Hazou has been.
    • Wakahisa should focus on his clan ninjutsu and improve his social skills. He should also begin learning a thing or two about medical jutsu once we've found a trainer.
    • Keiko should ask Inoue if she really doesn't have a Wind Release technique, or a standard genjutsu that can complement her fighting style. If this is impossible she could begin development in technique modification/development.
  • When appropriate (finished getting supplies for Kagome-sensei, have some time left), find time to train our 40XP.
    • Intelligence 2 [4]
      Intelligence 3 [10]
      Intelligence 4 [18]
      Intelligence 5 [28]
      Save 12XP
Of course this plan will be edited as new information appears.

Edit: We got +1XP from @eaglejarl that I didn't notice. Updated.

@faflec, your analysis seems reasonable.

However, I think getting 1 additional awareness is worth it. It will probably be useful for us even during our procurement mission.
So, I recommend following the second training plan you proposed:

Intelligence 2 [4]
Intelligence 3 [10]
Intelligence 4 [18]
Intelligence 5 [28]
Awareness 9 [37]
Save 2XP

Other than this, I like your plan.

@faflec, I want to suggest an addition to the plan:

  • If it doesn't dangerously strain Mori, have her check our plan for obvious problems.

Actually, we should probably make "Have Mori check and correct the plan" a mandatory part for every plan ever.

@HyperCatnip I'd assumed this was already done but I'll add it.

Right!

@eaglejarl doesn't find it plausible that we will convince Kagome to join the party, BUT doesn't discard the possibility.

So lets brainstorm ways to maximise our chances of recruiting him.

What can he get more easily by joining us?
What can he get less easily by joining us?

How can we make the former seem much more important than the latter?

He doesn't want to join us because he's paranoid. Traveling with us is fairly objectively more dangerous than staying in his little spot of do nothing. This (his paranoia) is the main problem we'd need to solve if we wanted him to join us. That said, I'm not sold on wanting him to join us. Loose nuclear strikes cannons and all. I think best case scenario is that we have a good relationship with agreements for us to come back and get more training occasionally in return for more paper or random luxuries. To do that, we just need to keep good relations (I think), and never make there be any hint of us betraying him.

On the other hand, if we're wanting to relocate, we could try to convince him that every ninja and their uncle is coming to Iron to kill some Samurai.

He'd also allowed Inoue-sensei to kawarimi with him; from now on she'd be able to switch with him at will until he revoked the permission.
This is VERY IMPORTANT. I need multiple people to write this down on stickynotes so that we remember that if we are in a battle with Inoue, we need to REVOKE her kawarimi permissions.

Inoue is a jonin. If you're in a battle with her, you've got bigger problems than her kawarimi privileges. Regardless of whether you're using "with" to mean "against" or "alongside", you've got bigger problems.

You can just imagine it though. Years from now, the mountains stretch on endlessly around them, snow gusts past, a dramatic confrontation between teacher and student on a rickety wooden bridge.

"Inoue! You've gone too far this time! Stealing Mori's ice cream was completely uncalled for."

"You think you can stop me? Next week I'll take Noburi's ice cream as well! Muahahaha!"

"I can't let you go on like this. Every moment you continue is an insult to your past self."

"I may have taught you everything you know, Hazou, but I didn't teach you everything I know. Now, come!"

Inoue drops and activates an explosive tag, then swaps with Hazou. Hazou is exploded into giblets with an anticlimactic whoomp-sclrntch, falling to the canyon floor thousands of metres below as Inoue skips away into the snowstorm dramatically.

"This world is mine and mine alone. First stop, the ice cream parlour."

Evinoue is even more based.

I just mean that this detail sounds like something Inoue would bring up later in one of her "lessons" like her elemental affinities.

I've been thinking about kawarimi recently, and I think it is high time we muchkin it. So here are some questions I have for you, @eaglejarl (I've posted these to the googledoc too.
1. Can we kawarimi with an object we don't have line-of-sight to?
2. Can we kawarimi and then kawarimi again very quickly? How quickly? Middle of combat quickly?
3. What is our kawarimi range?
4. Can we kawarimi with an object we haven't seen before or are not familiar with?
5. What are the upper and lower limits on weight and volume that we can kawarimi with?
6. Can we kawarimi with air, water, or water clones? What about earth clones?

If our character doesn't know the answers to any of these questions, I demand that we DON'T find out through experimentation. Justus are not properly understood and are dangerous.

Man I hope that Technique Hacking will actually pay dividends. I'm really feeling that loss of our limo'd road to Seal Mastery.

On another note, I do wonder how deeply the GM's will allow Rihaku's built in cognitive restrictions to the Frozen Skein bloodline to hamper her as a ninja. Because her inability to improve something good and lack of initiative would pretty much lock her out of a ton of skills, and any original research. As Mori said, her clan pretty much just sticks to Logistics & Support, as that is where their bloodlines actually benefit them.
