Kagome's mentorship may be one of the safest courses in Sealing, but it will instill a deeply-rooted paranoia that have your fellow ninja giving you the side eye in social settings. Luckily, it's that paranoia that'll keep you alive.

[X] Action Plan: Continuing the Plan

  • Be there for Akane. Don't try to make things better: just be present as much as possible.
  • Check/optimize all with Mari.
  • Start making arrangements for the move into Leaf
    • Delegate/defer to Gaku.
  • The compound:
    • Hire and pay civilian contractors so as not to run against the Merchant Council, but do what you do best with Earthshaping yourself.
      • Practice Earthshaping for art and architecture. We want a damn pretty compound.
      • Use clan colours for stone, smoothed together as if one stone. Take your time: do this slowly and correctly.
    • Plans include a statue of Jiraiya (styled as a tribute he'll appreciate) in the entryway, little waterways with (non-deadly) koi, and scattered, communal gardens.
    • The compound should be open and welcoming.
      • Except Kagome's quarters, which will be defended to his satisfaction with Hazo's help (Earthshaping).
  • Visit other clan compounds for inspiration and to ensure Hazo's vision integrates with established Leaf norms.
    • Visit as many as possible. Prioritize the Hyuuga and Uchiha
    • Do your research on their architecture. Bring thoughtful host gifts - Earthshaped? - for the clan and your guide(s).
    • You're here to learn. Be humble. Temper your natural curiosity: be interested, but don't overdo it.
  • Prepare two celebrations for the compound opening.
    • 'Formal' opening - clan heads, Summoners, important political/community figures.
    • A more intimate/casual gathering: close friends and Goketsu allies, but folks you want to know better, too. Minori Minami's mother, Aburame lensmakers, Sarutobi sealmasters, your guides from architectural tours, etc.
      • Make them feel welcome.
      • The theme/vibe is integrating Goketsu into Leaf.
    • Think wedding ceremony vs. reception: formal affair/statement and then social intermingling of families.
  • Continue work on Minato's seals.
  • Ask Noburi how being the Toad Summoner is going. Has he found any good teachers? Can he?
Might be possible to sneak a +Mood scene with Ino and Akane where they can school Hazo on Leaf Ninja and Civilian architecture. Or maybe a larger meeting with the family + trusted friends (Shiko, Ino, etc)? Or on the third hand, speaking with Spiderwife about how best to plan a compound? Or on the fourth hand, meeting with the architects of the KEI compound? Or on the fif-
Yeah, too many options, not enough ways to make everyone happy.

"As to practical steps," Kei continued, "my advice to you is to do the exact opposite of what you should be doing in order to heal your pain and grow beyond it, undermining if not reversing all of the genuine progress you have made."

"What? But why?"

"Because as far as the Hokage and every eye that could conceivably report to the Hokage or influence another's reporting to him is concerned, you need to be a paragon of loyalty and stability. You must not indicate any discomfort with the atrocities you have committed or the atrocities you may yet be ordered to commit, and given your appalling acting skills, that means you must endeavour not to feel it. You must be the very image of faith in the Hokage and willingness to accept his every instruction, without question and without thought, in direct denial of the independent judgement you are finally developing. You must be happy, or at least hovering around the average happiness level of a typical traumatised chūnin, and you must act accordingly. Were it not too blatant a swerve, I might even have recommended a return to Youth. Finally, you must find a way to indicate that Hazō's influence over you is limited, and has no potential to compete with your duty to the Hokage. I advise some manner of lasting rift, over a concrete issue that will make the sudden change in attitude plausible. Recall how you felt when you originally terminated your relationship, or in the aftermath of his failure to punish Haru. One could argue that transforming you into a living weapon of mass destruction might qualify, but I suppose that would clash with the 'embracing atrocities' angle."

I wonder if this is what led Itachi to snap, and kill his clan?

...With respect, our lives do not revolve around Kei. If at some point she wants to talk to us about this, she can. If she does not, she can continue throwing tantrums inside her own head.

We did exactly as precedent has dictated we must to avoid her displeasure: We did not put her life at risk (as she has, herself, implied Akane to so be) without her permission. In this case, getting her permission would itself be putting her life at risk.

That aside, we should not be talking to her about this. That's opening up a whole fucking can of worms as regards OPSEC for this, and I do not trust either her or Hazou to keep their mouths shut.

Kei's right, we should've went to her first. Shika gave us nothing, zero help and I still wonder why we thought he would help more than our close friend/sister.

Didn't Kei kinda tell us not to do this?
No, she snarked at us a bit and gave us artistic feedback. That said, I'd be happy to have him talk to Snowflake about it.

Keiko isn't really surprising. Like I've said before, Hazou has attacks of stupidity, Noburi has glory hunger, Mari has self destructive loathing, Kagome has paranoia, Akane has hollowness, and Keiko has making the most irrational and emotionally taxing decision possible.

Let's not be too harsh on her: She has not thrown a tantrum outside of her own head, and has not even let Hazou know, and this is fine. It's okay to be irrationally upset at how things turned out in your head for a while as you work through your emotions.

It's normal and natural to.

I would also like to point out, however, that in addition to this, if we had let Kei know, she would have been equally at risk to Akane, because she is known to have a vested interest in Isan's wellbeing.

Anyway, updated the plan a little. Mostly added to talk to Snowflake about Leaf architecture and art.

Kei was accustomed, now, to suffering through Snowflake's happy memories of time spent with Mari, accepting it as an eerily precise counterpart to Snowflake suffering through her happy memories of time spent with Ami.
Lying.
Hashirama's fearsome ferns
Hashirama's Hale Haberdashers!
Akane, what you now possess is more than a mere clan secret. You are capable of single-handedly ending Leaf.
Genjutsu to make the target cast their most devastating technique on their closest ally cannot hit Akane.
Akane, a sane Hokage should be terrified of his most trusted, most loyal shinobi having access to such power. A truly sane Hokage should be scarcely less terrified of having it himself, but I have seen too much to expect miracles of the universe. If Jiraiya of the Three was prepared, for the sake of a clan secret, to eliminate the shinobi to whose leadership he was prepared to entrust his children, what do you suppose Sarutobi Asuma, a Hokage of less confidence and inferior skill, will do to protect Leaf from a shinobi rendered unreliable by emotional trauma, manifestly hesitant to obey orders that conflict with her personal morality, and possibly more loyal to her treason-happy boyfriend than to him?"
Less worried about this with Mindscan? Much less uncertainty if Akane submits to regular scans.
Akane's eyes turned cold. Had Kei not expected such a reaction, from someone like Akane it would have had the force of a blow.
Breeding resentment for Hazō. Like dating a boy genius solving world problems while living with an abusive parent. Resentment builds for perceived neglect. Being there for her flipped from supportive to reminder of helplessness. Best way to make Akane feel better is no longer by addressing feelings. It is by securing meaningful promises from Asuma. If Asuma vowed to never flatten Isan and never use EM without unanimous vote from members of the compartment there would be much less for Akane to feel bad about. No way to get vows without committed effort.

Cruel to wait for her to resolve to break up when the relationship is bringing her so much pain.
"I'm sorry, Kei," Akane said, "but I can't believe it. Even if you're right and it was true of Jiraiya before he took up the mantle, it can't be true of Lord Hokage. Even if I don't understand the Hokage's decisions, even if to me they might seem"—she almost choked out the next word, with visible effort—"wrong, the Hokage is the Will of Fire made flesh. I understand why you wouldn't get that kind of faith, being from Hidden Mist, but to me it's real, as real as anything else."
Was Akane always this unquestioning? Feels like Hazō accidentally gaslit her into transferring loyalty from him to the Hokage after she burned the village.
"Once I start thinking that way, it's not that implausible that the Hokage would want me gone. A ninja who's betrayed the Will of Fire, even in her heart, doesn't belong in Leaf. But I can't just roll over and die. You told me that, Kei: while the world needs Uplift, there are still things even a mass murderer like me can do. If I die, even if it's fair, all of that gets wasted. Right now, Uplift needs every helper it can get.
Lowered opinion of herself drove her to rely on unhealthy faith in superiors. Hazō sheds faith from himself.
"Only then… it was the Hokage who ordered me to burn that town. I'm the one who chose to do it, but that doesn't mean I can pretend away where the orders came from. How many orders like that did he give? I don't dare ask, even though deep down I already know it'll be a number that hurts to hear. The Hokage's much wiser than I am, and the choices he makes are the best choices anyone could make in his place because the Will of Fire guides him. So where does that leave me if my heart says those choices are wrong?

"I know I shouldn't be questioning him. Questioning your orders is disloyal. The chain of command can make mistakes, and if that happens, the team leader has to adapt to the situation on the ground, and that could be you. But once you start thinking you know better than the people the Hokage appointed to lead you, everything falls apart and you can't protect anything. That's not the Will of Fire.

"But what if I can't keep doing this? I know that using it again is wrong, Kei. I know it with a certainty that I don't really have for most things anymore. I can't use it to save the village from Akatsuki because it's too big, and I can't use it against the Dragons because I don't have a Summoning Scroll—and I don't want a Summoning Scroll if getting it means hurting more innocent people just for power. Not after I killed several hundred farmers inventing a weapon no one should have. Maybe Hazō could think of a clever use—but Hazō was the one who thought of this clever use, and if I'm not smart enough to stop him making mistakes, maybe I at least shouldn't be helping him make them."
Far out of the range of expected feelings about the Hokage after the war. Private meeting with Asuma chance for Yamanaka brain washing? If not, appealing to Will of Fire without better understanding of it is dangerous.
"Please, Akane. I am not asking you to condemn your divinity as immoral. I am asking you to understand that he has been placed before a choice with no morally acceptable options, and that of the options before him, he will choose the one that protects the most people with the most certainty. It is the correct decision from every perspective, save that we understand the situation better than he does and know that you could never cause the catastrophe he fears."
... the Thinker Brain is terminal.
Kei was no holy sage with the power to force open the eyes of the wilfully blind, but she would be damned before she allowed Akane, her ridiculous, precious Akane, to die of manufactured loyalty to a village that did not deserve her.
Kei goes pretty damn far.
It was not painful to see Mari again as they ascended to the rooftop garden. Why would it have been? Kei saw her often enough, laughing and enjoying herself in Snowflake's memories. Their own bond was cleanly severed, with no ragged, bleeding edges. She neither required nor missed Mari's warmth, her playful affection, or the gentle glow of her approval. At this point, she barely remembered such things.

It was a relief that Mari clearly felt the same, as after a moment's shock when she realised she was not facing Snowflake, her expression settled into calm neutrality.
Kei lying to herself about feelings for Mari makes me wonder if she is lying to herself about why she is choosing to take this path to help Akane.
"Hello, Kei," she said, casually batting away the hyphae of the saprophagous amanita sneaking over her shoulder as it reacted to the presence of three or more prey animals in close proximity.
Never gets old.
"At this point," Kei said, "I have extensive experience feeling guilt for atrocities, observing those who feel such guilt, and observing those who do not. I have full confidence in my statement.
The bullied becomes the bully.
You may call freely on my assistance, as long as you appreciate that no one but the people in this room can know—and Hazō, I suppose, though I will not weep if Akane decides it would be preferable to exclude him for the sake of OPSEC.
Internal clan treason? Kei is speeding through her Hazō arc.
"Akane, please remember that I have no formal involvement with your situation, and everything I have said to you is baseless private speculation unworthy of being shared with anyone. Beyond that, I trust Mari's ability to read between the lines, and you know the boundaries of what may and may not be explicitly shared better than I."
If Kei and Mari knew too much information not to fill in the gaps about EM, what can you do? Bringing them into the compartment is something that could never be prevented. Only dangerous if you believe in murderous Asuma. Hiding things from Asuma pushes Asuma to be more murderous.

I would also like to point out, however, that in addition to this, if we had let Kei know, she would have been equally at risk to Akane, because she is known to have a vested interest in Isan's wellbeing.
Incorrect. Akane isn't at risk because she knows what the EM nuke is and is opposed to its use. Akane is at risk because she can decide to cast it at any moment. You'll note that Kei doesn't seem to think that Hazou is at risk, here; and Kei herself would've been at even less risk than him, since she's less treasonous, is very, very deeply embedded in Leaf's politics, and would have many, many avengers should she accidentally die (Ami, Gouketsu, ISC, KEI, the Kei...). Indeed, telling her prior to telling Asuma might've actually decreased the risk to Hazou, since it would've ensured that Asuma just can't kill everyone who knows about the nuke.

Kei is upset because, from her perspective, the cost of looping her in was minimal to zero, and given that Hazou had decided not to involve her anyway, she's now perceiving that Hazou expected her contributions to be even less than said minimal/zero cost. Which is incorrect, but because we'd overestimated the danger to her, not because she's underestimating it now.

The one misconception she may be operating on is that she may think that Hazou'd expected the EM nuke to turn out this big (or go nuke at all), and therefore that he'd been continuously making the decision not to run something this big by her before doing it. Instead of a momentary mistake where he erred on the side of not putting her at risk, as it actually happened.

Kei's "tantrums" have an annoying property of being entirely rational emotional reactions, which only read as tantrums because she's picking up on some detail or inference that we've completely missed, assumes that we haven't missed it and decided to do what we did anyway, and inventing the worst possible justification for that. Recall the suicidal Isan plan, and the whole thing where Hazou had to convince her he's not familicidal, but merely able to miss inferences obvious to her.

(In addition to being the Ami Relationship-Myth Dispeller, it's also apparently my role to be the Kei Tantrum Steelmanner. I think this is the fourth time?)

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail @Paperclipped Still not sure if Hazou or Akane are training, just cross things out as appropriate.

SC XP:
Hazou SC XP: 12*1.5 = 18XP
Akane SC XP: 12*2.1 = 25.2XP
Kei SC XP: 12*1.7 = 20.4XP
Hazou and Kei's XP have been added, Akane only returned from her "chakra beast" hunting mission on the last day of the update, and was thus ineligible for SC training during it.

We know that Sasuke, holder of the Sharingan, is made to recognize in Hazou the ability to have sharingan offspring everytime he looks at him. I wonder if that unconsciously instills a sense of brotherhood in Sasuke? Every time he looks at us, his bloodline whispers "family/cousin."

Always fun to read a reaction post. Kei, like Hazou, is being kept in the dark about important stuff, has decided to go pretty damn far for her family even though it's treason, and apparently doesn't care much about authority. I hope it's not terminal. +1, PC of choice, 1d4 in 24h, you know the deal.

Sealing Research:

Hazou (Calligraphy): 30 + 3 (IN) - 3 (dice) = 30
Hazou (Sealing): 46 + 22 (SSA) + 7 (invoke "Promising Sealing Student") + 6 (dice) = 81

Hazou thinks he's nearly finished with the first of Minato's seals. He thinks he could have gotten this seal done much, much faster if his Calligraphy were higher, as he doesn't think he needed prep days for the Sealing roll.

FWIW I really dislike all the points of the form 'we want to talk to you Kei, but not right now because you're too angry / prone to bottling things up / etc'
like, even if that is true, it's the worst possible phrasing, basically blaming her emotional state for what _we_ want to do.

'You deserve an explanation but I don't think I'm able to communicate one while you're angry - though I will try if you want it now' is at least taking ownership of our preferences

also huh I was thinking Kei was angry because we didn't optimize the EM experiment plan with her, not the Hokage-handling one. the latter makes more sense tho

The chapters deserve better reaction posts than this but dwelling on that gets in the way of posting at all. XP to Noburi, please.

Someone else get in on this! Gratified writers make gratified readers! Will not stop your favourite character from suffering or dying but reading will be such sweet sorrow. Unless your favourite character is Noburi and having bought that 1 XP jutsu changes everything...

"Not be angry/hurt+betrayed at us for consulting Shikamaru instead of her on something Shikamaru was better suited to advise us on than she was" is my guess, but as I say, this section isn't my baby.

I also understand part of her frustration to be that we didn't consult her before doing the initial testing in the first place, so she could ask Shikaku-eque questions of "what if it works", and "is this the optimal location"? Going to Shikamaru over her is probably part of it, but it's really the fact that in the entire chain, we didn't use our trusted sister optimizer.

Are you suggesting that your sisters are not already optimal? Tsk tsk.

Also, apologies for double post, but I figured it should be asked: I wonder if this makes Akane less likely to get a genin team, or more? Can definitely keep her in the village doing D-ranks for a little while. But having Akane, Noburi and Mari tied up with teams given current state of affairs now feels like a more unfortunate interaction.
