Welp that clears any doubt from my mind. Necromancy is our only option lads and lasses.

Also, omfg that sweet sweet skywalker money. Opening up a seals workshop for clanless ninja sounds even more appealing right now. They won't be able to make cool things for a while but thats fine. We just need someone to supply us with our usual loadout of tags while we spam skywalkers. I doubt the 150% on skywalkers is going to last more than a month or two. If war breaks out the tower will need the money for other things, and if tensions die down then leaf doesn't need to be on aggressive readiness mode.

Kagome would probably jump for the chance to increase the clans utility so much, he's been feeling pretty useless.

Things I want for/from kagome:
1. Skywalker blanks as a full time job until our other ventures start paying out.
2. An after Academy study group (Cuddly little kids are a great way to begin to tie his loyalty to leaf in general, not just us. Also, we should see a out adopting/sponsoring Honokas (sp?) family)
3. A seals university. Much smaller class sizes than the one he attended. The goal being every student safely becoming a Genin rated sealsmaster with the resources to advance further if they wish, rather than throwing bodies at the wall and seeing what sticks. Paying us a fee for usage of our materials/compound of course.

Most of that is going to take years to actually finnangle. For the time being we're going to be limited to "These handful of schmucks over here."

Incidentally, @Noumero can you switch out the Ami warning for some sort of Team Nakano recruitment pitch?

Yes, I was meaning to replace it with something. What do you have in mind?
Clearly we need Mari to condition her fear out of her. This is a genius plan that can in no way backfire.
Excellent idea! Added:
[X] Action Plan: :)
Timeline: January 6.
Wordcount: 298

  • Prepare for and schedule meetings:
    • Dinner tonight (if possible): Nakano's team.
    • Tomorrow: Ino (lunch), Chouza (afternoon), Asuma (dinner).
    • Later this week: Shino, Minami, Keiko (topic: Summons), Minori.
  • Early Morning: Spar with Lee!
    • Invite Akane.
    • Ami-style training:
      • Sparring area: Open training field with 20-30 logs, placed upright. Ground is lava: move between the logs only.
      • Vary strategies: chakra-adhering to a single log; destroying logs; racing between logs...
    • If they wish, tell them about Gai's final moments from the debriefing.
  • Acquire some operatives with Noburi and Akane.
    • Consider turning mission-desk ninja (Ito Ino?) into operatives.
    • Look over Jiraiya's blackmail/black market notes. Anything worth looking into?
  • Spread rumors with Mari and Naruto. Follow their lead.
    • Goals: Make the Hyuuga waste time trying to counter nonexistent plots. Bonus goal: make their allies actually abstain.
    • Ideas:
      • Hiashi insulted an Inuzuka who died at the Nagi island.
      • Hiashi plans to hold the Uchiha responsible for Itachi's actions at Nagi, as the first step to vassalizing them.
      • Hiashi plans to disadvantage the Kyoshō to secure the Kurusu's vote (and vice versa).
  • Afternoon clan meeting: Discuss working with the Yakuza.
    • We could sell them ice/salt, or promise assistance against their rivals.
    • Should we work with Leaf's xor Mist's Yakuza?
  • Order Mari to rid Keiko of her haptophobia. By any means necessary.
  • Contingency: Ami arrives at the compound (sanity-check with Mari).
    • Carefully introduce to Kagome.
    • Discussion topics (Clan + Ami):
      • Spend the favour: "For the next month, have as your highest priority the maximization of Gōketsu's political power, preferably by working with Mari".
      • Establish communication with her in Mist.
      • Include her in our previously-discussed plots.
      • Akatsuki: They're an existential threat. Pool information, offer full collaboration against them.
        • Is diplomacy possible? Can we influence their idea of "pursuing peace the hard way"?

I thought you were concerned about spoon count?
Good point. @MMKII, perhaps we should flesh out minion-recruiting or rumour-spreading instead?

In the meantime, I replaced it with a fun thing:

I'll cook something up later.

I thought you were concerned about spoon count?
My rough guesstimate is that this would be moderately less spoon draining to do as a scene for @eaglejarl than it would be for @Velorien since the former has already conjured up personalities for these characters and stepped into their respective headspaces (though that probably depends on the metaphorical price of china in Tea at the time of writing.)

If we're conserving spoons the "Go find operatives with Noburi and Akane." bit is the thing that needs to go. Its vague and offloads a lot of implementation level stuff to the writer-which might not be the best thing, it usually ends up being a coin flip there on whether thats helpful. Also, thats exactly what this dinner is supposed to accomplish.

I'd prefer we flesh out the rumour stuff. If we could flesh out the operative gathering stuff in a way thats more structured we could do that and shelve the dinner plan for the next update.

I'm ambivalent so long as one of our minion gathering ops gets its due dilligence in terms of planning.

The end of Chapter 123 has the mention of the three compounds Jaraiya is considering. Chapter 124 seems to start with them already in the compound, and specifies the date to be August 31.

The current date is January 6.

Assuming payments are due the last day of the month, that means we've made 4 payments.

Each payment is R675,526, for a total of R2,702,104 already paid.

The principal was R51,150,000 - which means it's now R48,447,896

+1XP please, @eaglejarl :)

Incidentally, at R3435 per Skywalker, and the rate of Skywalkers being 6/hour, we can fully pay off the mortgage in 2351 hours. If we use the R10,000,000 we have in the bank, that gives us a principal of R38,447,896 - able to be paid off in about 1865 hours. 932 hours of work if split evenly between Hazou and Kagome.
Is Kagome as fast a scribe as Hazou? He's more experienced, but he has to be careful not to make mistakes. Hazou can whip things out.

This is in chapter 124.

Hmmm, you're correct. That being said, Jaraiya heads out on the mission August 31 in the afternoon. He returns September 3 at 1am to report the results of Naruto's kidnapping, create the clan, and become Hokage. He sends the clan out immediately to go on their delivery run to the spy network.

They return from the delivery run mission in Chapter 146, at which point Jaraiya has already purchased the compound.

We've just gone all in on that new compound, our coffers are about to get emptier than Uchiha Itachi's heart, and the Hokage doesn't get to knock on people's doors and ask for handouts

Chapter 147 is October 1, and is either the same day or the next day after 146. Which means we were on the delivery run for less than a month.

Since Jaraiya says getting a loan as Hokage would be ill advised, it sounds like he would have needed to do it before becoming Hokage or soon afterwards before it was publicly known. Though, even then, the clans still would have already known and they'd be the ones to provide the loan.

Even if I swallowed my pride and asked one of the other clans for a loan, there'd be enough strings attached to cocoon an Akimichi.

Considering how super busy he was as a nascent Hokage, searching for Naruto, etc. I doubt he'd have spent the time buying a compound - unless he felt the need to do so immediately once the clan was formed.

So certainly no later than October 1, no earlier than August 31. When exactly during that month is debatable.

I'm inclined to think during the earlier portion of that span since Jaraiya indicated the Hokage can't really ask for loans without them being extra terrible - and he'd have been busy as Hokage and probably wouldn't have had buying a compound towards the top of his priorities.

So...no more money problems?

33 hours per month, split between Hazou and Kagome, and the mortgage is fully paid for. An additional 97 hours if we want to also take on, and fully pay, the Hagoromo debt each month.

That's not counting the tax hours.

I'm not sure if Hazou is considered capable of making them since he's not able to infuse them....QMs?

Assuming he's not, 50 hours total, split between Hazou and Kagome, is required each month (not counting the unconditional clan money we get from Leaf) to pay the mortgage. 147 hours total if we want to also pay the entire Hagoromo debt.

That's ignoring the possibility of refinancing or paying off the principal with money in the bank.

The mortgage is R51,150,000. If we want to pay it off entirely and not need to worry about paying the mortgage - first, R10,000,000 off the top that we already have in the bank. Bringing the total to R41,150,000. At R3435 a seal, that only requires 1997 hours of sealsmithing (at 6 seals per hour). Both Hazou and Kagome can smith the seals. So 999 hours for each of them. At the standard civilian work month of 200 hours each month, we can own the property free and clear within 4 months. If we say ninja don't take weekends off (they don't), and they work 12 hours a day (they won't want to), we can finish it in 12 weeks. That's not really enough of a benefit to work them to the bone, just pointing out that we can do it.

Whoops, I missed a detail and all the math changes.

That's the price of R3435 is per element and the rate of 6 per hour was for each completed seal, which means 5 minutes per element.

So each of the hours mentioned above needs to be halved.

Keep in mind that we wouldn't be just paying the Hagoromo debt for them with no strings attached. If we go that route we'll find some way to move the debt around so they repay it to other people besides the Hyuuga. Any money we put into helping them should get repaid, or at least mostly repaid.

Whatever the options are, we need to choose the ones that don't give Hiashi Hyuuga a massive influx of liquid cash.

I agree. I was just figuring out how feasible it would be if we wanted to give a ludicrously large gift.

It's oppressive, but not impossible to manage.

Whatever the options are, we need to choose the ones that don't give Hiashi Hyuuga a massive influx of liquid cash.

I think we're stuck doing that. I'd say just have it happen as close in proximity to the vote as possible (or better, after the vote) to mitigate the concerns of the liquid cash before the vote. They're going to get a lot of liquid cash. Even if just from the Hagoromo, they get R2 million in cash every month.

Whatever the options are, we need to choose the ones that don't give Hiashi Hyuuga a massive influx of liquid cash.
That's a good point, although it limits our options. We could basically guarantee the Hagoromo's debt so they don't have to worry about horrible things happening to them if they can't make a full payment at some point. That might be enough. I can't think of much else we can do without paying off the loan.

Edit: Wait, idea. We 'buy' the loan by paying the Hagoromo the principle so they can stick it in a vault and use it to pay off Hiashi. (Or someone else keeps the money in a vault, if we don't entirely trust the Hagoromo.) Meanwhile they start paying their payments to the various clans that chipped in to buy off the principle.

PSA: PRIOR ANNOUNCEMENTS ABOUT SEALS ARE UNRELIABLE FOR NOW.

As has been noted, the QMs once again have had double transparency issues. This stuff is complicated.

I have started a PM with @OliWhail, @Velorien, @Rihaku, and @Evenstar to get everything hammered out. I proposed solutions to most of the questions, so there are anchors for the discussion. We need QM quorum and no strong objection from the third person in order to make a decision; both OliWhail and Velorien have been exhausted and spoonless for days, but they seem to be recovering so we should be able to have answers soonish.

The questions include whether seals are priced based on the seal or the sealmaster, what Kagome and Hazō are ranked as if it matters, and a half dozen other things. If there are particular questions you know you're going to need answers on ASAP, speak up. We may or may not answer them. (eg "What will the Tower's take on <X> be?" will almost definitely get an "HDK.")

If we're conserving spoons the "Go find operatives with Noburi and Akane." bit is the thing that needs to go. Its vague and offloads a lot of implementation level to the writer.
It depends. If you actually want to DO something about getting minions, that sounds like fun. If this is just another "think about something and talk about it and do some research" item... Well, I guess those have to happen. Boring, a little annoying, and it means spending spoons on figuring out the blackmail material, but you need the information.

Comments:

You may not be able to get the requested time for a particular meeting. Unless stated otherwise, I will treat each of these as having an implicit "...or as soon as possible" after it.

The part about sparring with Lee is unappealing, but I suppose I can do it. What are you trying to accomplish?

I have no idea what the "disadvantage" rumor is supposed to mean. You need to provide more detail or cut it.

The rest seems fine. Not super exciting, but I guess it's all necessary stuff that has to happen at some point. I'm pretty likely to either offscreen the Ami scene or leave it for @Velorien.

That's surprising, I'd expect that Hazou was much faster than anyone who had to take actual care.
Very explicitly no. The Iron Nerve does not let you do things faster. It lets you do the same thing every single time. That means that once Hazō has made a successful Calligraphy roll for a particular seal, he does not need to roll for that seal again...but it still takes exactly the same amount of time as it did originally.

Hazō's advantage is accuracy, not speed.

You have it backwards. You are repaying them with money for an enormous not-monetary favor that they are doing for you. They are agreeing to (A) vote in a Hokage who is friendly to you instead of one who is hostile to you, a decision with existential value to your clan and positive impact for years or decades, and (B) to put themselves directly and visibly in the way of one of Hyūga Hiashi's fondest dreams, thereby accepting a major risk of the (probably) most powerful clan in the village deciding to crush them.

They want a bribe and not a refinance?

Pffft.

Counter offer: We're offering to get them out from under Hiashi's thumb, a place they do not want to be, for something it doesn't cost them anything to give. The refinance and joining the winning coalition will protect them from Hiashi crushing them, so it's a good move. If they /want/ to remain Hiashi's slaves then they're free to refuse the refinance offer. Their call.

I don't care about them repaying back the money, I'll even throw in a few Nara hours to help them optimize their finance. That 200,000 USD that they have to pay to the Hyuga is freed up capitals.

Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.

It's a MASSIVE sum they owe the Hyuuga. Them wanting it as a bribe for the vote and joining the winning coalition is absurd. We're offering to liberate them. They should jump at the chance.

They have expressed an extremely strong preference that this be anyone other than Hyūga.

They want this almost as much as we do, we're just giving them the means of sticking it to Hyuga and actually do it.
