The clans are already in a solid alliance, they're stable and sane, and they have pretty useful abilities and political clout. Something to think about. This sounds useful. It would give us a lot of long term stability if we could manage it. I'd be on board.
 
Obviously he answered our questions by writing a veritable scroll worth of book/page/line numbers and now we have to read the entire Icha Icha series to puzzle out his advice.

I'd be curious to hear some political analysis from others on how these clans might react and what effect such an alliance would have on Leaf politics.

If we lose Jiraiya, we might not have the clout to join as an independent clan but could instead angle for being absorbed by them as a branch family, perhaps of the Nara. That would grant us some protection from Hiashi, I think.

What alternative alliances could we make? I'm thinking Sarutobi might be a possibility.
 
Apropos of nothing, do all the Nara have that lazy streak? The head doesn't want to become Hokage, his son doesn't like doing much of anything if he can avoid it. Are there others who aren't that way?

I'm wondering if their famed intelligence might be an ability that is somehow inheriting a little bit of the Mori Voice's passivity in a much more subtle (and perhaps insidious) way than the Mori get it.

It would explain a lot.

Shiori is a Nara and hasn't exhibited much of the laziness. My bet is that the 'purer' your Nara blood is the more of the clan's characteristic features show up, including the braininess and the laziness.

    • Jiraiya might not come back from the assault
    • If he doesn't Hyūga will get the hat
      • Who has sworn a vendetta against us
      • Which Jiraiya predict would lead to us being dead within a year
    • Hazō wants the team to start preparing for if the worst happens
    • Hazō wants to send Orchimaru the following message
      • "Jiraiya might not be coming back from the fight with Akatsuki. We're considering what to do in that event. If you're going to be leaving Leaf, is there any way to contact you afterwards?"
      • Attach a veritable mountain of Pangolin gold.
        • Keiko, we'll figure it out I promise. Just get this arranged somehow.
      • Postscript: "By the way if you could somehow use this money to make Hiashi no longer exist within the next week in an untraceable manner that would be beyond great. Thanks uncle Oro!"
        • Rationale: Hiashi is the main antagonist here. By all accounts he is an amoral shit standing in the way of Jiraiya, Clan Gouketsu, Team Uplift and most importantly Uplift as a concept.
    • We can send it with the pangolins to the snakes
    • We know that Jiraiya was working with him
    • And that he was able to be a missing nin from Leaf for years
  • Get back to Leaf.

Committing high treason and plotting the death of the new Hokage with an enemy of the village should be an absolute last resort. Let's exhaust every other option first.

This is the sort of thing with such horrifying consequences if it goes wrong that we only pull the trigger if the alternative is certain death. That means Hiashi takes over and proves just as bad as Jiraiya feared, and all attempts at political maneuvering to shield ourselves (such as by forming alliances or joining another clan) have failed.

Nope nope nope! Those is not a thing we should consider without at least having Tsunade or Shikaku firmly on our side for it.
 
I would approve of getting T's approval for traitorously risky gambits. Or just phrasing it such that the first thought in anyone who might read it's head isn't treason.
 
I got the impression Tsunade was also along for Operation Ground and Pound, is that matching up with other folks' interpretations?

Agreed. Even sending that message is treasonous as it is. If it's intercepted or Orochimaru sells us out, that's potentially game over.

As a less extreme alternative, what if we start by asking Tsunade what we should do in the event that Jiraiya doesn't return and Hiashi does, and lay out Jiraiya's fears? Depending on Tsunade's advice, we could do the same with Shikamaru to see what he thinks and where his clan is likely to stand.
