[X] Poll: Trading Card Game

Meanwhile in the Discord, the plot to design an IC CCG takes shape.
[X] Poll: Trading Card Game

To expand on this, we're essentially plotting an entertaining and IC way to do (THING) via creating a trading card game from Bingo Book entries and other publicly available intel.

Spitball of the general idea: Think some sort of MtG clone, but with simpler black and white line art.

The Why:

  • Fucking print $$$$$$$$$$
    • Don't tell me this wouldn't be popular.
  • After some amount of time this would allow us some control over the younger Famous/Infamous individuals. And those who are not.
    • Fresh Genin: Oh boy I can't wait to get a card made for me, that'd be pretty cool.
      • (Curry favor with us, mortal.)
    • 16 year old Chunin: Oh wow thats a cool card thanks.
    • Fresh Jonin: Wow thats a really badass looking holographic card . Wait, you got me a signed one with real artwork? Thats really thoughtful and cool of you.
  • Make it educational. We were thinking of including some sort of baseball cards stats aspect thing to it. Also game mechanics can be reflective of certain universal truths.
    • Chakra beasts are bad news. Sealing and Technique Hacking are op. Summoning is OP. Explosives solve all problems, etc.
    • A game is a perfect medium through which to teach young children.
  • Use it for widespread public information drops similar to Jiraiya's novels.
    • "Okay so I have to arrange all the cards in the bi-annual booster pack according to this prescribed key we agreed on earlier and then puzzle together stuff from the flavor text and stats for my debrief"
  • The Novelty
    • Don't let your memes be dreams.

The How:

  • Hire woodcarvers/artists and borrow the Nara printing presses every so often.
  • Distribute through the presumed network of merchants we will be building, have Jiraiya include free booster packs in his book sales, etc. Win-win on the marketing front.
?????
(More details to be hashed out later I guess.( To be fair, I skimmed all the technical dicussion as I would rather think about practical applications of the completed product.) As always, Discord shitposting for the win.)

I'm going to express concern with the TCG being a profitable venture, given the need to export to a very wide audience (including dirt-poor villages) for use in spying and related tasks. This isn't to say I don't think it could work, but I would want it to be known in advance that we might not be making profit from it and would need other sources of funding to sustain it.

Could you expand on how you see this being problematic? Combined with storage seals and a couple dozen travelling merchants (which I assume we will eventually have) and other distribution means (pack them in with J's books, for one), I don't see distribution being super problematic here?

Distribution isn't the issue, supply and demand is. Using the example of a spy network, we want to be able to communicate with the out-of-the-way villages regarding orders and the like, which means they will need to buy the cards on a semi-regular basis. And poor villages aren't going to be willing to spend a lot of money to buy cards as entertainment, when compared to whatever they have/had on hand. Which means they will need to be cheap to be worth buying. Like, really really really fuckin' cheap. And I don't see us making much of a profit from that, since we need to burn money to make the cards, plus startups and the fact that we need to keep printing new cards (not new copies of old cards, original new cards)...it'll make profit eventually, but it's going to be a long time FMPOV.

And I'd like to add one of my own, which is more of a meta option:

[X] Poll: Outreach

I'd like us to continue breaking out of our shell and interacting with new people. Our goals inherently require support from a broader power base, and we can't really attain that without getting out of our clan HQ and making ourselves visible and approachable. The specifics I voted for show different ways this can be accomplished. In particular, as (hopefully) the Hokage's clan, we really should strive to collectively integrate ourselves better with the village. I'm almost inclined to support the Sith Lord project based on this reason alone, but I fear it's going to be fraught with political difficulties.

I don't see why any bulk orders are necessary on a village-to-village basis. You have some dudes who walk around doing their travelling merchant thing. They sell packs of cards for 5 ryo a pop or hand them out as a courtesy after a decent sized sale. Obviously we will have our merchant travel through this location, because we know we have a spy there in this situation. With macerators, making paper on the cheap is an option IIRC, possibly with some research added. Otherwise: just ship to big towns and cities?

Also, given that TCG's were like, the more ethical lootboxes of decades past, I would argue that the main income would probably be generated from the whale equivalents: some well to-do clan kid or some merchant hobbyist with an interest in ninja who buys them like crack. That might not map too well though. Given that its clearly associated with our name, I imagine that any extra supply would be quickly bought out by the other nations' intelligence departments too? Eh.

Like, there are people that make these games that Hazou owns, yes? If any of them do it for a living, there must be a decent sized market for it already.

I mean, at the end of the day this is just framing "Spend a few hours a week teaching some kids how to punch good." in a meme-y light. I don't actually care if we corrupt them into serving our every command without hesitation, or doing a big drill sergeant act , or whatever. Thats just icing on the cake.

What is our angle on getting HM to ally with Leaf?

  • Do it or we will reveal you to the world?
    • They've kept themselves secret because they don't want to be a vassal state continuously going on suicide missions. We will need some bullet proof guarantees of good treatment, that will last even if the Hyuuga take the hat from us.
  • Do it or we will destroy you!
    • 80 ninja being coerced into helping you and all know each other, like each other, and live together far from your center of power but close to your more vulnerable allies aren't an asset, they are a liability.
  • Do it for the good of the world?
    • I think they are content to let the world burn.
  • Do it for the great prophet!
    • Very difficult to pull off. Keiko would need better socials. (40s to 50s)
  • Do it, we've got great stuff!
    • They've had 400 years to get used to their current living situation. Quality of Life improvements might fall flat, better weapons are dangerous to us.
  • Do it to save yourselves from extinction.
    • I think we have a QM saying that the population of HM was a lot bigger until recently.
    • I don't know if the concept of stable breeding populations even exists.
    • It might even be possible to do it while maintaining secrecy.
      • The EN probably produce more infant orphans than they are able to care for. We could try to redirect a fraction of the mistreated orphans to HM.
        • This should be win/win. The baby gets better care than they were going to, HM gets to marry people that aren't its genetic 2nd cousins, and the baby should be treated as a full member of HM, not a mistrusted outsider.
Do it because your secret is already out anyway and you're better off allying with the biggest village around alongside your holy summoner from the start of your introduction to the rest of the world?

Why do we particularly care about tiny villages and such? That's not where most of the population is, to my knowledge.

I thought we were trying to make a spy network? We need intel on more than just the major cities, it's why we ended up at a ton of smaller villages when doing that courier mission for Jiraiya.

I don't think its more profitable to have spies stationed randomly in tiny villages than having a bunch of travelling informants and have a couple stationary spies in key towns and cities, but eh.

This (the merchant "spy" network) likely isn't going to be useful for any military espionage for a couple IC years anyway, so its more of an intel network that can double as a distribution chain for goods and/or messages.

The Trading Card Game is explicitly not intended for spycraft to my knowledge. It's propaganda (not for Leaf, but for ninja in general) and money for us.

I assume that this is a poll for what we want to see happen next, not what we are interested in in general.

We have no need to use it as a source of income in the short term, first we can use it as an excuse, like Jiraya uses his books: a way to share information with our agent and create interest.
At first we don't even need to sell cards, give an hundred randomized decks at merchants and make tournaments with an entry fee, for example, or completely free for the first year/month/months or so.
Make people interest and curious, while using it to increase the importance of ours merchants(using the power of the press that others places lack) and a way to share information with them.
For making the people play it, just imagine.... "The game ninjas play" or "the game the Hokage son invented for his father's meeting, a games created for Kages".
At first free/pay to entry for tournaments, no cards involved... an experiment. Then start adding some decks with mythics/rare at random in them, making people curious and once the game is completed Bam! Release on the curious people that saw other people play it,the ones that played only the normal decks and want to try the real ones, and so on, the cards and sell them...
For competitors, between the technology of the press and other unconventional ways, not necessarily violent, we could have a monopoly/oligopoly in ours hands.

And i'm still posting just before going to bed, on my phone, goddammit.
What kind of black sorcery did this quest put on me?Who is responsible for this?! Ami? Zabuza? Or... Hiruzen Hiruzen is dead, citizien, this is the only truth, forget everything
Who else? Hiruzen is dead, i almost forgot it.
Silly me. It lives, fools, find him before it's too la...

That line appears to have been added in ad-hoc to the list of reasons. I can assure you that in the discord where we were designing and planning it we were not thinking of spy networks, just mainly the possibility of earning lots of money from it and it being a cool thing.
Alrighty then, I give up. Just make sure you have a stockpile of cash to deal with the short-term deficits that's gonna be happening (due to start-up costs and the time it'll take for it to get traction).

When asking "How useful is Thing" it is useful to engage with the equivalence class of Thing modulo minor modifications or additions.

i.e. Regardless of the original reasoning for why its a cool idea, "Use it to distribute information." would also be a good one. Apologies if that was unclear.

We'll develop better printing technology in the quest of ever better looking cards as opposed to boring texts. It's advancing print media to a whole new level.

Fair enough, just make sure you have Hazo keep the not!Exodia cards so that he can destroy anyone that makes it to the finals of his world tournament. Speaking of I recommend an island for the locale, for reasons.
