When you say "Dark!Hazō", I think you're referring to the part of this update where he talked to Keiko about family, and to the part of my earlier update where he implied to the proctor that he was going to do something horrible to her after the Exams were over.

My mental model of those occasions, which is not necessarily accurate since there are three separate canon writers for MfD, is that in my update he was furious at a specific person, to the point where it stopped being anger and became freezing cold and a lack of concern about social norms, consequences, or anything else -- controlled psychopathy, if you will. In this update he was both angry and frustrated, but it was mostly directed at a situation instead of at a person. There was no specific target to threaten or terrify, only a desire to smash the status quo.

@Velorien, does that sound like what you were going for?
In part. He was also wanting to smash the status quo in support/defence of his sister, which helps keep him hot rather than cold. (Mind you, Lelouch managed the above with plenty of both.)

9am, New York Time ?

Interesting choice.

(I'm watching you.)

Awesome chapter!
Excellent post. Much appreciated. As for the deadline, I forgot my weekly exorcism of the spirit of @eaglejarl, the only thing that protects us all from an eternity of punching.

(That eaglejarl manages to haunt us while still alive is testament to the fact that I am not the only QM wreathed in the power of darkness.)

Eek. Beware the greater good argument. That's how good people are convinced to make terrible, terrible mistakes. I can show you the psychology research if you like. Remember the Milgram experiments, where regular people were persuaded to torture people to death? The script the 'scientist' had involved telling the people that it was a very important experiment, that important things would be learned by it, that it needed to be done. That's all it took.

Humans have a severe ethical weakness to this argument, it's a weeping cognitive blindspot in every one of our brains from birth. We are incapable of reasoning around it safely. The only really safe option is to reject it completely as a justification for doing anything and make decisions entirely on other bases.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on psychology in any form.

You seem to have a strong opinion based at least in part on the results of the Milgram experiment.
If I understand you correctly, you argue that the Milgram experiment is strong-ish evidence for humans being easily swayed by greater-good arguments to commit what an outside-view person would describe as morally wrong.

From what I understand, the Milgram experiment is however an experiment in obedience to authority, attempting to show how people can ignore their moral compunctions in favor of not disobeying. It seems to play into human fears of disappointing/angering a perceived superior, instead of appealing to a sense of greater good.

If you have some psychology research to link that specifically tackles the greater-good argument and finding/linking it isn't to great an effort, I might be interested in it (ok, so I tried to make this sentence not sound antagonising and I'm not sure wether I succeeded. So here's a note that this sentence is intended to sound neutral-ish with a pinch of genuine interest).

I also found this analysis of the Milgram experiment, which at a glance seems to present a more nuanced picture than what I recall having learned about the experiment in school: Obedience seemed to have varied quite a lot depending on factors like peer pressure and distance(?).

Would you mind finding a citation for this? We're having trouble locating it within the mountain of worldbuilding docs.

It's from this infodump:

Might as well do an in-thread version of the infodump as well, just in case someone tries to sneakily edit it.
Has Hazou heard anything about Iron country?

That it used to be prosperous, but then they ran out of Iron.

How many seal-masters and medical ninjas were there in Mist?

Hazō has no way of knowing the former. For the latter, there are enough to treat ninja in Mist itself, and enough to send on a few important missions, but not enough to place one in even a quarter of all squads. - V

How many ninja live to retire?

Very few. It is a high mortality profession. - J

What are the prominent known clan-bloodline powers?

  • Mist: Houzuki, Yuki, McPuncherson [although not the part about making seal blanks], Wakahisa, Mori.- J

  • Leaf: Hyuuga, Uchiha, Aburame, Inuzaka, Akimichi - EJ [NB: you don't know all the details, just the rough outlines -- "sees everything, copy jutsu/see fast, controls insects, controls dogs, really advanced Henge powers"]

What are the stated reasons for ninja wars?

About like the real world. Politics, economics, philosophical differences, personal enmity, etc.

What does Mist do to prevent missing-nin from running around?

Track them down and kill them?

What is the effect of raising the Transformation, Clone, and Substitution technique, in game, using XP?

Transformation increases the variety of forms available (as well as the degree to which their natural abilities can be utilised), and makes one less likely to pop back to normal if struck or distracted. Basic clones become more convincing and capable of following more complex instructions. Substitution is performed quicker, with fewer hand seals and with less appropriately sized objects.

What do we know about the Jinchuriki and their current locations/village affiliations?

Apart from that Yagura is one and that major villages generally have one or two? Not a lot. You know that the nine-tails rampaged through Konoha about 12 years ago. - J

List of questions then, I'll try to keep it simple. Out of Iron, Waterfall, Snow, Tea, Sea, Fire, and Mist what are their current general political climates,

  • Iron: Isolationist, and mostly left alone because of its unimportance and low value.

  • Waterfall: Allied with Earth country, produces a lot of food.

  • Snow: No one on your team knows. Snow is North Nowhere to most of the world.

  • Tea: None of the genin remember and Inoue has never had a mission there.

  • Sea: A de facto neutral ground with little by way of natural resources, and much by way of unsavoury dealings between ninja villages and civilians alike. Ruled by elusive ninja pirate lords.

  • Fire: Hiruzen is known as a calm and peaceful man and a great leader, but there are stories from a few decades ago about what happens when you push him too far; there's a crater on the spot where one of those stories happened, and it's big enough to put a small hamlet in. Add to that the Sharingan, Byakugan, Inuzaka, Aburame, etc etc etc and everyone walks soft around Fire. Inoue has gone on infiltration missions there; she knows that there is some internal strife -- clan leaders who would like more freedom, differences of opinion on how things should be done, etc -- but none of it is strong enough to be exploitable. See comments about Hiruzen above.

  • Mist: Generally stable. Yagura is respected for both his power and his intelligence. The Bloody Mist thing was a long time ago and long since gone. (Although not forgotten by people like Shikigami.) Recently attempted to annex part of Noodle. You're not sure how the attempt fared without your group there to join in the fighting.

State of borders (who crosses, how often, how do they cross, and why?),

There's some mercantile trade, all of which is escorted by ninja because civilians couldn't travel more than a day or so through MurderWorld without being eaten. Diplomatic missions go back and forth periodically. Hunter-nin are allowed to pass. Scouts/spies slip across the borders periodically -- as fast as ninja travel and as few of them are, borders are fairly porous to small groups. -EJ

trade goods that go through,

Specialty foods, cloth, metals, spices, art, etc. About like you'd find in the real world. -EJ

estimated strength of their ninja villages, stance towards civilians, and connections with rest of the world?

  • Iron: No organized ninja village that you're aware of, although they do have ninja. Bit of a second-rate place -- not much in the way of natural resources or anything to attract outside attention.

  • Waterfall: Allied with Earth.

  • Snow: No one on the team really knows. They trade a bit, but not much.

  • Tea: One strong clan and some non-clan ninja.

  • Fire: 1200 - 1400; supportive; allied with Noodle, Tea, and Sand; generally open to trade

  • Mist: Mist: ~1300; civilians are producers and second-class citizens; suspicious, allies with Nagi and Honey, although definitely as senior partners and not equals.

How far does Water's sphere of influence reach? Particularly, how many of the islands are allies of Water?

What does Hazou remember from his history lessons? Rabbit Goddess and the Sage of the Six Paths?

The Sage he remembers, the Rabbit he does not. - J

Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara and the founding of the Village system?

Two people and a historical event?

EDIT: Oh, wait, this was probably attached to the 'what does Hazou remember' question. Same as in canon, at least as far as he remembers. History was never his best subject. Yes, Hashirama gave away the 1-8 Tails. You've no idea why he would do something like that.

Anything that happened in the 900 years between Sage of the Six Paths and the founding of the Villages?

People lived, loved, hated, fought, made peace, married, divorced, were born, and died. Also, lots of battles.

Could you be more specific?

Shinobi World Wars I through III and who was fighting who?

The wars were brief, and the death toll atrocious.

What happened to Whirlpool and was it a glorious victory for Water, or did some other nation take them out?

Whirlpool was famous for its sealing ability. It became SO powerful with seals that it made everyone else nervous, so Lightning wiped it out in a pre-emptive strike. Mist helped.

The world sucks. Chakra monsters everywhere. Small enclaves of humanity here and there. Never enough ninja to protect them. Nobody cares about civilians anyway, because ninja are the master race.

For the sake of clarity, could we have a list of known and rumored chakra monsters?

Meh, that sounds like work. It's a very long list. Basically, take any real-world animal, add "and then it kills you in horrible ways" and it's probably on the list. Chakra monsters also tend to be ecologically sensitive, so they will often have extremely specific ranges -- sometimes just a few dozen square miles around an area with particular trace elements in the soil. As a result, most of them are regional and therefore not well known outside their home turf. -EJ

Do the swamp creatures count?

Yes.

Daimyos are subordinates of Kages -- basically glorified bureaucrats.

There was a problem with the Uchiha, and a bunch of them died. How many? Dunno. The fact that one of their best and brightest (Itachi) was instantly branded a traitor is highly suggestive of what probably happened.

Every country has ninja or it wouldn't be a country.

The Land of Iron is neutral; they haven't been taken over because they don't have much that anyone wants (the iron is largely mined out and the economy has mostly collapsed although there are still pockets of moderate wealth here and there). The northern bit is essentially tundra.

The Land of Tea. Got a port up north-west and a port mid-east (yay trade). Mountain pass for trade 50 miles south of the border. Lots of coastal villages (yay fish). A single clan commands the military which focuses almost exclusively on monster killing, they're friendly with Leaf and hold the Capybara summoning scroll. They live in the mountains in their fortress. Fairly ninja-lite as countries go.

[x] Action Plan: Game-theoretic Coercion
  • At the privacy location over the bay used previously, Hazou states to Ami:
    • Based on her previous decisions, the Gouketsu believe that she wishes to escape Mist and/or enter a position where it is safe for Kei and/or Ami for Ami to reconcile with Kei by way of Ami marrying into the Gouketsu.
    • Obviously, she cannot at this stage convince Hazou otherwise, except by taking actions that would ruin her chances of this outcome.
    • Hazou precommits to immediately breaking all contact with her, as permanently as circumstances allow, and advising the rest of the Gouketsu to do likewise (preferably, Hazou gets them to agree before the meeting to follow such an advisement and says as much to Ami, so as to maximise the reality of the ultimatum), should she take social actions that Hazou considers to be uncooperative during this meeting. Such actions include but are not limited to: emotional manipulation games, not giving straightforward honest answers (though Hazou cannot determine Ami's honesty in the moment, he can commit to breaking contact later should dishonesty be discovered), and evasiveness.
  • Anything Ami says or does is to be recorded verbatim on paper, and sealed, with the seal kept on Hazou's person to be scrutinised later by Jiraiya and Kei on the seventh path (and not to be unsealed on the human path). Ami is to be informed of this.
  • Anything Ami says or does is not considered evidence to be updated upon in the moment, but rather to be filed away and examined at a later time and possibly updated upon if considered valid at Hazou's leisure.
  • Ask Ami her specific intentions toward the Gouketsu in general, and toward Kei and Hazou in particular, as well as an explanation of prior behaviour toward such.
  • Kei should optimise this plan using Frozen Skein.

Determine whether she is capable of treating you as a proper ally.
She probably can't, since we (Hazou) are the junior in this relationship (in terms of experience). We should want to determine if she can treat Clan Goketsu as proper allies.
Demeanour: calm but serious.
So this is kinda strange since you have two parts to the conversation: one is a serious discussion in the water and one is the more relaxed picnic. Do you mean that both conversations are meant to be 'calm but serious' and the picnic is merely relaxed relative to the open-water conversation, xor should both conversations be around the same level of 'calm but serious'? If it's the latter I would worry about making jokes if we're trying to be serious about things.

Either way, should might want to clarify this.
Check everything below with Jiraiya.
And Noburi, and Keiko. They're right there. In front of us. Right now.

Also, this probably should go at the top. Optimizing our goals and mannerisms is a good thing.
Employ Silence Mines (if approved).
IIRC Silence Mines need to be still to function, and open water is not conductive to that. Are we on a small pocket of land in the ocean (are there any present, and does Hazou even know that)?
Letter #1 hurt her. You're partially to blame, for not informing Keiko of the interaction in advance, but Ami is responsible too. Is she is going to treat her with disregard? If so, you doubt you could be close allies.
Should we be telling her this? If the goal is to become allies, we may not want to tell her this as Ami may act irrationally around the topic of her sister. Maybe focus on the marriage thing instead?

It's possible that this should read "with respect", instead of "as a proper ally". In any case, Hazou is the clan representative here. If Ami can't talk to him seriously for five minutes, then that implies she's not willing to play ball with the clan either.

It doesn't matter what their relative levels are. The Hyuuga sent Hanabi to our game night, and if we'd treated her poorly because of her age, it would've absolutely been taken as an insult. Again, if she's unwilling to drop the act for a bit, then there's little point to Hazou meeting with her. She can go petition Jiraiya if she wants.

Should we be telling her this? If the goal is to become allies, we may not want to tell her this as Ami may act irrationally around the topic of her sister. Maybe focus on the marriage thing instead?

The goal is to figure out whether we can become allies. Her ceasing to do things that hurt Keiko is a necessary condition. If she's going to act irrationally about it, we want to find out sooner rather than later.

I'm actually with faflec here. Instead of focusing on the letter toward someone who is, at this point, an unknown to Hazou, be more general and just... say that.

I'm sure that Jiraiya and Noburi can optimize whatever delicious combination of srs business and trolling we come up with, though.

Implemented.

Partially implemented. See @Roomba's post.

Clarified.

We used them the last time.

Hazou promised Keiko he'd get a confession. Additionally, that part only happens if Ami says she'd like to work together — and if we're going to work together, the topic of Keiko is bound to come up sooner or later.

Changes made.

  • Immediate reaction: put on your most ominous grin, say "yes, sir".
  • Optimize everything below with the clan.
  • Goals:
    • Determine how serious Ami is about the marriage.
    • Determine whether she is capable of treating you as a proper ally — at least when you represent the clan.
    • Determine why she cast Keiko aside.
  • Guidelines:
    • Precommitments (overriding priority):
      • Don't talk about OPSEC-sensitive topics. Don't bring up topics of uncertain confidentiality.
      • Avoid commitments aside from those Jiraiya explicitly allowed you to make (if any).
    • Maintain mental balance.
    • Assume that all displays of emotions are deliberate — whether they're genuine or not. Watch out for mood whiplashes.
    • Don't be intimidated by threats: they're bluffs (probably).
  • Clothes: formal, clan colours + something subtly symbolizing Keiko.
  • Meet in the pre-established location, then move to the waters for privacy. Split up to get there, if necessary.
    • Employ Silence Mines (if approved).
    • Have a backup ANBU discreetly watch you from the shore. Inform Ami of this.
  • Start by establishing a scheme to confirm integrity of letters
    • (Example: "nth letter of every sentence follows a pattern".)
    • Wondering if Letter #1 was from a third party was a headache. Never again.
  • Serious discussion:
    • Guidelines:
      • Demeanour: calm but serious.
      • Don't let Ami sidetrack you, or continue obfuscating. Be direct, insist on directness in turn.
      • If she persists in playing with ambiguity and manipulations, even after several warnings: calmly say that you'll be waiting for her reply, leave.
    • Topics:
      • Does Ami want to join forces with you?
        • For political as well as personal reasons, you're willing to use your status as the clan heir to argue for allying with her, marriage included if necessary. However, you'd need a clear statement of intent, with no further mindgames.
          • Some of her actions suggest she is in danger. Does she need help?
        • If she lies regarding this, you'll treat it as a major betrayal, with all that entails.
      • If Ami stated she'd like to work together, bring up Keiko:
        • Whatever Ami did when they met, it left Keiko convinced she hates her. With Ami's level of control, you doubt it's unintentional. Is it true? Why?
        • Letter #1 hurt her. You're partially to blame, for not informing Keiko of the interaction in advance, but Ami is responsible too. Is she is going to treat her with disregard? If so, you doubt you could be close allies.
  • If everything goes well:
    • Move back to the shore. Have a picnic, make small-talk.
      • Act more relaxed and friendly. Do not forget the precommitments.
      • (Is it cold outside? Plagiarize ISC: bring chairs, a table, warm blankets, an iron barrel filled with fuel, socks filled with heated sand. (And food.))
    • Important: Ask whether she played board games. If no, is she interested?
      • Mind the innuendos.
      • Bring up the possibility that your own universe is fictional. Act as if it's a deeply meaningful question for a minute, then laugh it off.
    • Hand her a post-interaction survey.

Should we be telling her this? If the goal is to become allies, we may not want to tell her this as Ami may act irrationally around the topic of her sister. Maybe focus on the marriage thing instead?

That is... Good?
It shows how we feel about Keiko and it would show us that she's still human. That is practically a prerequisite to consider her an ally, considering our values and priorities.
A big part of us being allies with Jiraya, instead of waiting for the chance to kill him with explosive and overkill, it's his values and morality, even after living a life such as his.
Hazou, i'm fairly sure, doesn't want to ally with an amoral monster devoid of values.
It's also one of the best way to force the real Ami to engage us, and work as a wake up call on her "let's manipulate the shit out of everything" behaviour.
In short, i find it a sensible addition.

I am objecting to the admission that we didn't tell Keiko about the meeting.

I'm pretty sure she already suspects that, and if not, will almost immediately know once we start talking about Keiko. Definitely the moment Hazou tells her the message hurt Keiko, because he won't be able to hide his slight discomfort at being partially responsible. We're not telling her because it's advantageous in isolation, but because it's better than being called out on being a hypocrite and losing momentum.

What exactly is she going to do, if we really do threaten her? Attack the heir to Leaf's ruling clan in broad view of watching ANBU? Hazou might be intimidated by her threats in the moment, but I'm not. Not in the slightest. So if she gets upset and uses her jounin aura again, then that's probably a cue to leave as well.
Remember how Keiko managed to use her aura to directly and calmly lead us to a place that Hazou thought would be dangerous? Ami is bound to be better at it. And it is Hazou who will have to execute the plan, not one of us through the safety of a screen. Beyond that, threats should really not be coming from our side in this situation. Just remember the "pretty damn far" debacle.
[x] Action Plan: Game-theoretic Coercion
That is... horrifying.
If Ami can't talk to him seriously for five minutes
But that's not what we were asking her to do in the plan. We were asking her to "respect us as a partner/ally/equal". Phrased that way. Which has been corrected by now.

[x] Ami Plan: Aided by Their Respective Inter-Universal Horrors, Two Lunatics Talk to Each Other

Though... @Noumero if Ami genuinely says that she isn't quite sure yet wether she wants to work with the Goketsu, maybe for reasons she can't share yet or whatever, how does your plan continue? Or if she first has demands of her own, demands we can't meet right now? Are we not going to ask about Keiko in such a situation? Why not?

Hazou accepts that answer, says that he can't unilaterally accept her demands but will bring them to Jiraiya, and proceeds to the picnic. I'll clarify that.
Are we not going to ask about Keiko in such a situation? Why not?
Because
then she'll lie. If she doesn't want to work with us, it's highly unlikely that she'll be willing to drop the deception, which means we'll be forcing her to reinforce it. At best, we're going to go back to Keiko with horrible news ("yes, Ami really hates you for such-and-such reasons") that aren't even true. At worst, Ami'll decide that "assuring Keiko's safety" is more important than maintaining friendly relations with us, and will decide to reinforce the deception in some highly effective but highly destructive ways.

Wouldn't it be better to skip to the "Keiko" part and then picnic part, instead of directly to the picnic part?
I'm not sure Keiko would take "well, she didn't want to be BFF so i didn't even tried to ask her".
As long as Ami maintains honesty it should be enough, considering the two things aren't exactly connected.

EDIT: never mind, reread the post and understood the reasoning, carry on, nothing happened, like me asking a question already asked.

I really dislike this. Firstly because it's such a tired trope and doesn't make for good scenes; secondly because it can really be disruptive when taken seriously / bordering on YOUTHSUIT; thirdly because it's out of character for Hazou.

I appreciate that we want to be dominated by have playful interactions with Ami, but if we're aproaching this meeting as "let's be serious for a moment, because we're out of time", then this is an awkward and jarring change.

--

Also, are we considering at all how we're going to invite Ami to this? If she really is under pressure, going to her with "Hey let's go to a completely OPSEC place and discuss important things" might not actually fly / might be forcing her to commit in advance

@Noumero One thing we could do is find another private room as Ami did in our previous meeting. Of course, it's gonna be a lot harder for us to do that...

Alright, I've got it. What we're eating at the picnic, that is.

We spend a fate point to declare that we have some ramen from Ichiraku ramen and then share it with Ami, telling her that Teuchi made it for us.

We already sent the invitation out, though I suppose the contents are still in flux.
You've sent a letter inviting her on a date meeting tomorrow. Jiraiya was too much in a rush to check the contents, which tells you a lot.
