DO NOT MESS WITH TIME

(on the one hand, fun update. The april fools posts caught me every time when I was reading through MfD last year. On the other hand, I am upset I failed to vote against messing with time via precommitment. Not that it would have swung the vote)

Can someone appreciate the amount of restraint it took for me not to make this update canon? I could have, you know. I didn't know about the conspiracy @Inferno Vulpix talked about (great job on the coordinating and the OPSEC, indeed!), but I did notice that this wacky idea was voted-in just before the April Fools'. It was obvious that the QMs would take advantage of the timing to use this as the premise for their April Fools' shenanigans, and post a non-canon chapter pretending to be canon as their joke...

... unless I denied that possibility, of course. Unless I made it impossible for such a chapter to pretend to be canon, and therefore to serve as a joke. Unless I made it so that the only way to base a joke on this idea would be to go one level higher, and post a chapter that pretended to be pretend-canon while actually being canon.

And it worked so well the last time, after all...!

But I'd faced some criticism for my actions back then, so I'd opted not to. I'm such a paragon of virtue~

Too soon? (I was not actually considering doing that, to be clear.)

More seriously, great job selling it, @eaglejarl. The appendix with the boring-yet-plausible mechanics changes at the end, to make even a suspicious reader doubt, because surely the QMs wouldn't invent something like this from the whole cloth just for a joke? Great stuff!

And it was like magic. We put the idea in the plan, debated back and forth about it on thread and in discord, and there was not a peep about the upcoming date. Like clockwork, everyone who remembered that past conversation kept quiet through the whole thing. The only person who broke OPSEC was a sharp thinker who pieced it together all on their own, and even that we got cleaned up in short order. However the plan actually turns out on Thursday, I'm incredibly proud of our community for being able to work together this effectively.
So I missed out on the planning that went into this, the discussion presumably off-forum anything else. And I'm not the sharp thinker you mention either.

But I did figure it out. Like, maybe 10h ago? Was impatient about the update, noticed the actual date, and everything came together. Thought about saying something, realized that would be helpful to nobody and kept quiet. Good work ya'll. Had fun.

I think I was the 'sharp' knife in question. Which is to say, I was 'sharp' enough to figure it out, and dull enough to not realize that I shouldn't say anything. So; butterknife.

There had been at least four separate occasions where he had opened his mouth to say something, presumably a rant about safety and lack thereof, but then shaken it off without a word.
Who is he and what has he done with Kagome-sensei?
He needed help, and his dream last night had given him the answer. In it he had stood in fog, the center of a line of Hazōs that stretched out of sight in both directions.
I'm imagining a line of Avatars except they're all saying things they'll regret shortly btw
Looking over his shoulder, he recognized the clothes of the ones behind him; they were the clothes he had worn yesterday, the day before, the day before that, in a steady line back as far as he could remember his sartorial choices. So, about a week.
MARI: Did my memory training count as a joke? Did my political training on appearances serve no purpose?
TIMELESS COUNCIL OF HAZŌ: We are one. I am many. Together we are an existence spanning time and space. Also, I still don't really get clothes.
when he called out to them their heads turned in surprise, looking back to him.
"Oh wait I feel like I just remembered something important. It was me saying "hello" n days ago"
Futures crashed against one another, million or billions of them vaporizing in an instant.

Wars raged through Potentialities, possibilities blowing to and fro on the winds of fate and chance as 'perhaps' strove to become 'is'.
If he becomes aware of this every time he makes a choice that prevents futures (say he picks tuna instead of salmon) this will be a problem
And, least impressively but perhaps most importantly, a packet of unassuming off-white paper appeared in midair and fell atop the rune with a faint 'plop'. It overbalanced and slipped from there to the ground.
I swear to Jashin if it says "do not mess with time travel" in slightly shaky handwriting, I will... respect you. That would in fact be pretty funny even the second time around.
He turned it over and the blood drained from his face at the words written on the front. Written in his own hand, above a wax seal with the Gōketsu family crest pressed into it.
Oh.
the Gōketsu family escape code
OH.
I think Kagome-sensei was with you when you did this, right? Sage, I miss him so much
Nooooooooo
face-on-fire stupid ideas
If it's pants-on-head stupid and face-on-fire stupid at the same time, will it burn your pants? We ask the real questions, only in the MfD reaction posts. Not distracting myself from the sadness of thinking of dead Kagome-sensei. Not at all.
No, wait, I talked to her yesterday. I think? Yes, she was in on the planning for this. Wasn't she? Gah, stupid Twinings. Maybe a full Redaction, or Counterredaction? Whatever, not now.
Well this is very normal and not scary at all
Depends on whether the shrillings found this Counterredaction point.
The shrillings huh (file under "do not ask, just in case")
Put it this way: sending this message required literally uncountable versions of us to die, along with everyone in their universe, so that we could concentrate all the chakra in those universes in order to punch a hole through time.
We did it! A worse thing than anyone else did! Whoops.
No, focus. Focus, Hazō! I am myself! I am not you, so shut up! No, I won't write that, shut up shut up shut up!!!
Good good we're well on the way to making things cool
Congratufuckinglations, it worked. Don't do it again you shithead. But thank you for doing it once.
Aaaaah yes. That's the good stuff.
Skywalkers killed the Third and set off WWIV. And maybe V and VI, depending on how you count and whether you're in a Potentiality where AMITY came into existence/survived the Crush. Killing the Dragons unwove the protections and allowed the Great Escape. Killing the Horned One united the warring factions. Ousting Cannai—
What I'm hearing is "we were awesome and were punished for our awesome but we're going to fix it again." Up until "ousting Cannai," Cannai is good dog best friend :(
I considered not sending anything back for Noburi because he keeps stealing the last slice of bacon at breakfast and then not leaving the pan in the sink instead of handing it to the washing golem, but I guess I should be the bigger man.
Good good good good good
was whining like a little brat expressing my dispreference with the lack of exciting in the quest recently
Punching Dragons not exciting enough now? We-the-players really need to up our game. Or get you help for the catastrophe-and-violence addiction. Probably both.
...Aaaaand, yes, this entire update was an April Fool's. @Paperclipped will be writing the actual plan for Thursday and nothing in here is canon.
Oooh, by now I was expecting one surprise part of it to be canon and cause the players epic headaches for the coming months. It was a good idea not to do the sucky thing and type in "remember tomorrow is april fools so you better blah blah"
Also, to be crystal clear: the bit about the behind-the-scenes stuff is all malarkey, except that Velorien and Paperclipped are both in fact good people, good friends, good collaborators, and British.
Muahahahaha. After all this information if I can just learn their hair colour or preferred pasta sauce, my plan will be complete and I will be able to pinpoint the coordinates to find-- well, that need not concern you.

The joke is on you. My exact hair colour has been the subject of heated debate, and my pasta sauce preferences are split perfectly between two options.

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it even if it was an April Fool's. Happy April, everyone!
As one of the masterminds behind the idea to vote this in on April Fool's, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope it was as fun to write as we thought it would be.
Thirded

How do you know we would have got this update, and not one where Hazou is arrested by the time-police and put in the killbox? For the last time, this time.

Do not anger the mighty bird! But appease it with tasty tidbits to write and sometimes it will bless you with free XP.

Brevity XP: 10 (Brevity XP caps at 10.)

"GM had fun" XP: 10 I would award more but we're trying to avoid XP inflation and the others will likely be grumpy with me for awarding this much. Still, the time manipulation thing was super fun. I just wish I'd had the juice to get to the rest of it, but nope.
Holy shit! We actually got the Fun XP from this on our sheet despite the prank chapter. Thank you @eaglejarl!!

Yuno took the first kanji ("kill") and added the "child" ending to turn it into a girl's name (in a rather ironic juxtaposition to Kei and Mari's choices, now I think of it). I later learned that Satsuko, with that spelling, is a real Japanese name. Apparently, there are enough parents out there willing to name their little girl "murder child" for it to make it into the dictionary.
That is hilarious.

Y'all sure fooled me; well done!

@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped

We got these notes a long time ago. I wanted to ask if they'd be worth an Invokable Aspect for sealing research on explosives and explosive variants.

We're looking at working on RRBs again soon, and they're a (very difficult) explosive variant. Having another Aspect to Invoke there would be useful.
Hey guys, sorry for the repeat ping @eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped

Any chance you could rule on this? A little bird told me we're working on RRBs next update.

That was a wonderful update.

I always love your guys april fools updates. Even if I end up wishing most of them were canon because of just how much fun they are.
