• "But never mind them, I have a more personal target in mind now. Someone killed Akane — you remember Akane? — and I figure turnabout is fair play. If I get you a sample of her blood, can you find who did it? It even counts as work, since her death was an AMITY violation.
We don't know if Akane's death was an AMITY violation.

  • "While we're on the topic of killing, do you think you could get Akatsuki's summoners to gatecrash the conclave so we can get to ripping those dragons to shreds already? I'd be moving much faster on more interesting things if I wasn't wasting so much time having meetings with ambassadors who don't want to listen to me.
It seems ill-advised to me to request more involvement from Akatsuki, especially in front of Asuma.

  • "Should probably get Sasori working on 3D sealing, by the way. Oro and I are having to reinvent the whole discipline on our own, and we're going to need it to stop the dracopocalypse. Anything you lot can tell me about the Nagi island machine, while we're on the topic?"
We should definitely not let Sasori know that 3D sealing is even a thing. He has enough personal power as it is.

How do y'all feel about donking down a couple pouches full of gems as payment for Hidan and Kakuzu's time? This is a gesture aimed primarily at Kakuzu, but making sure people who have the capacity to affect the world are provided with compensation for their time seems appropriate.

We don't know if Akane's death was an AMITY violation.

Asuma said it was.

It seems ill-advised to me to request more involvement from Akatsuki, especially in front of Asuma.

Asuma recognises that Stop the World From Ending takes precedence, and has said as much.

We should definitely not let Sasori know that 3D sealing is even a thing. He has enough personal power as it is.

This is a ploy we've been discussing on discord: If Sasori is working on the dragons then that's time he's not spending on working on necromancy. If he beats us to getting control of the rift, project necromancy fails. Anything we can do to distract and slow down his efforts (such as "hey, help us stop the apocalypse!") is useful.

  • Gather information on Jashin. Shikamaru was alarmed to realize He's real. If that's another brewing apocalypse...
  • Target Akane's killers.
Is this really the lowest priority? I kind of would prefer this above getting intel about Jashin, as much as I want that.
Seconded
I also think this Invoke is a good idea. Hidan isn't likely to force us to fight something while Asuma is standing right there.

So unless you think that's probable, I recommend it. If you do, then it's a waste of chakra.
@Twinnstars , @Sir Stompy , @CaramilkThief , yourself, and (I think?) @Inferno Vulpix?
What cabal is this?

[x] Action Plan: All You Billiard Balls

[χ] Action Plan: Tell Hidan What Asuma Did to Isan (Also Minato Seals Afterwards)

@RandomOTP (who else is in the Cabal btw?)
Honestly I'm not sold on this. I nominally trust Asuma more than Hidan and Kakuzu, and there's a higher likelihood of surviving Asuma than them. Leaf will probably be destroyed, which is also counterproductive to our goals. If Hazo does in fact survive (and that's a big if), then there's no way he's living this down from his family. Hidan and Kakuzu aren't benevolent leaders punishing people's wrongdoings, they're psychopatic mass-murderers.

"Hidan! Last time I saw you, you were strolling off to Rock! What happened? You never visit, you never write... If I didn't know better, I'd think you were avoiding me!"

A couple takeaways from the last chapter, in my mind.

1a) We absolutely should get Kagome SC. Some folks in the thread have pushed for it in the past (I'll fully admit to being (iirc) neutral on it), but I think after this is the big time to do it. Considering the scope of the things we're researching, like bijuu seals and Dragonwar, extra hands would go a long way. Kagome had a good point about infusions as well. Even if he isn't FOOMing, then it's still worth it. That said...

1b) I think we should let Kagome in on FOOM. We trust him with necromancy, and that's at least as big of a deal, IMO. It's unlikely Kagome will ever go all in on FOOM, because the opportunity cost of seal research we need right now. But it could help. And as a trap master sealmaster summoner, even just him getting his evasion and reserves up help his survivability so much. There's lots of things we want to include Kagome in, except for his poor ability to keep a secret. But we know OOC that isn't really true, and IC we know he mostly figured it out and didn't say anything until it came up in honest context (and even then, only in our secure private office). And if we want him to improve his deception or sealing, well, golly gee, this helps with that.

2) AMITY isn't working. We are still killing enemy ninja. They are still killing us. Asuma just nuked a village. Lots of anger still runs deep. I'm not saying it potentially can't work. But I am saying that so far, things seem depressingly business as usual. I know it will take some time for, how did Ami phrase it, "realize having other villages alive could actually be good for business"? But at the least Leaf hasn't been abiding by the spirit or the letter so far. And thus, I'm also concerned that this isn't exactly just a housecall to talk to Hazou. This could be the "yo, y'all haven't been holding up your end of the bargain, and we know" beatdown. After all, the timing seems a pretty big coincidence.

1b) I think we should let Kagome in on FOOM.
There is virtually no chance I will ever support this before FOOM is straight up public. We're having trouble keeping it secret as-is. The truth will be out within days if Kagome hears about it. In fact, I feel like it has been mentioned he deliberately leaves the room when he thinks such things might be brought up around him.

Rolled out a round of edits. @Inferno Vulpix, @ContextBot, @Rafin, @Sir Stompy, implemented some of your suggestions.

@MadScientist, your plan strikes a great tone. Stole a few ideas.

... This might end up a 500-word plan, it's not terribly compressible without losing important nuance. I think it's worth it.
[x] Action Plan: All You Billiard Balls
Word count: <500
  • Buy 3 FP.
  • Declare: You've made an SC on the way. He'll optimize the below with Mari, then pop.
  • Goals (descending priority):
    • Don't create new major problems. Make theirs a smooth and brief visit.
    • Distract H&K from rift research.
    • Target Akane's killers.
    • Gather information on Jashin. Shikamaru was alarmed He's real. If that's another brewing apocalypse...
  • Mindset:
    • H&K are impulsive, used to their whims being catered-to. They'll make on-the-spot decisions with far-reaching consequences.
      • That may present priceless momentary opportunities. Look for that.
      • Remain aware they're not idiots.
    • Play a character they'll like. Not by pretending: lean into genuine feelings.
      • Desire for Akane's killers' blood.
      • Irritation at an AMITY violation; a lasting peace being threatened.
      • Interest in Jashin.
      • Willingness to work with monsters (gods or humans) if your interests align.
    • Coordinate with Asuma. Err towards following his cues.
      • Don't treason, but don't worry about looking like a Jashinite. He'll understand the tactic.
      • Maintain EM OPSEC.
        • It'd look weird that Asuma risked this because of a dead chuunin, AMITY or not. Does he have a narrative?
        • If no: act as if you've pressured him into this.
      • Avoid actually strong-arming Asuma into anything. (Such as making taxation suggestions Kakuzu may like and force through.)
  • Demeanor: Subtly, carefully cycle through several.
    • Hidan may prefer a laid-back, casually ruthless one.
    • Kakuzu cares about... money? Try "pragmatic, business-like".
  • Offer Hidan the peppermint tea.
  • Outline what happened to Akane, mention Hidan's stated ability to track by blood (you have Akane's stored). Then follow conversational currents.
  • Potential topics. They're all instrumental in service of your goals.
    • Jashin:
      • What's the Jashinite stance on someone killing your loved one?
      • What's His overarching philosophy? You don't exactly have a manual
        • Back on O'Uzu, Hidan said Jashin rules life and death...
      • Metaphysically, what is He?
      • How does one get Jashin's blessings?
    • Risk to AMITY. Figure out why H&K support AMITY, then lean into it.
      • Hidan: Still onboard with Uplift? (More people, more deaths.)
      • Kakuzu: Wants civilization to be richer? (Enlightened self-interest.)
    • Large-scale Uplift projects. Frame as an extension of what AMITY achieves? (Along whatever dimensions H&K care about.)
      • Roads, walls, chakra-beast extermination... (Notably, Akatsuki supported a Wind town before.)
      • Declare: You hired the Nara to extrapolate birth rates and economic growth from road-building across Fire.
      • Purpose: occupy them with one such project. (Note: This isn't a goal Asuma knows and supports. Bring it up organically.)
    • Dragons: Another distraction avenue.
      • Mobilizing Akatsuki summoners to crash the Conclave, get things moving.
      • Nerd-sniping Akatsuki sealmasters with 3D sealing. You and Oro are having to reinvent that whole discipline...
        • The Nagi Island machine may be relevant here. Anything they can tell you?
    • How'd Hidan's visit to Rock gone?
      • Be cautious. Bringing up his (apparent?) failure may go poorly.
    • Itachi: You heard your dear cousin and Ami got into an argument...
  • Contingency: If it's going south, wind down fancy scheming (not so abruptly it's jarring!) and address the minimal topic (Akane).

@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped How many people can you train in Summoning at once?

Based on what we've seen of it (like Hazou teaching Kagome) it seems like there is enough "Downtime" between instructor commentary that you could feasibly be training multiple people at once but on the other hand, it seems that at some point there would be too many students to keep up with.

Just throwing out a number, 3 seems like a reasonable amount to me. Jonin train teams in threes, Kagome was teaching 3 people Sealing at once (actually, it might have been 4...?) Etc.

"You'd do it faster," Kagome-sensei said.

"I don't know about that," Hazō said. "Maybe, maybe not. It would involve teaching as much as studying, and you're a far more experienced teacher than I am. Plus, the method I use for quick studying doesn't help with collaborations."

Kagome-sensei rolled his eyes. "You can say 'Shadow Clone'. I'm not a stinking idiot."

Hazō struggled to keep the surprise off his face. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Oh please. Jiraiya said that they transfer memories back to the caster when the clone pops and that Leaf's jōnin use it as a study jutsu. You've been doing it for ages. That's how you got so good at sealing so fast, right?"

Hazō swallowed. No, he had gotten so good at sealing by looking at two ridiculous artifacts made by the Sage of Six Paths. They had dragged his brain into the Out and he had brought back impossible and unnatural insights about the nature of the Paint and how to pierce it.

"How long have you known?" he asked.

"You and Akane both make—made—heavy use of Shadow Clone," said Kagome-sensei with a shrug. "There have been plenty of times when you had a clone talking to me or one of the clan while you were off doing something else. She had multiple clones at Noburi's wedding. Are Kei and Noburi and Mari doing it too?"

And if so then why aren't I? Why didn't you push harder for me to get it? remained unspoken.

"Kei and Mari," Hazō admitted after several long seconds. "We aren't sure it's safe for Noburi."

Kagome-sensei nodded and sipped his tea. "That stuff Asuma said about not wanting to make me a bigger kidnap target was nonsense, right? It's just that doesn't trust me enough to give me Shadow Clone

1b) I think we should let Kagome in on FOOM.

There is virtually no chance I will ever support this before FOOM is straight up public.
He already knows, we got confirmation this chapter.

Talk to Kagome. Treat him with the competence he deserves.

Be frank: there are secrets we are keeping from you, and secrets we are not yet able to aquire. Here are the reasons we can share. Here are the costs you would incur to get access, here are the things we would need to prove, here are the political costs, here are the time costs. Mari has the final word on when we are ready, and we will need to ask Asuma what it would take to convince him, but otherwise the decision to move forward is yours.

He already knows, we got confirmation this chapter.
He knows FOOM to the same extent that Asuma knows FOOM: he knows that Shadow Clone is good for training. He doesn't know of the Resolve feedback loop, or the Noburi limit break, or that we're achieving results far and away greater than what any other Leaf-nin not named Naruto can achieve.

Those are the critical parts of FOOM, and they're the secret we have to guard with our lives. It doesn't matter that Kagome knows Shadow Clone training is a thing, because everyone in Leaf with SC already knows it's a thing. Telling him about the actually secret parts would just expand FOOM's risk vectors for zero tangible gain.

I think you're underestimating Kagome's ability to connect the dots. I'm also not saying we should tell him the specifics out of the blue. The point I'm making is that he knows enough for it to be dangerous already. Might as well see if he can benefit from it too rather than just posing a security risk with no upside.

[x] Action Plan: All You Billiard Balls

@Noumero

I must say, this is incredibly well-crafted. Bravo.

If you're already going over 500, this might be worth including as well:
It'd look weird that Asuma risked this because of a dead chuunin, AMITY or not. Does he have a narrative?

Asuma could still sell the narrative that he's eager to see Akatsuki turned on his enemies though, even if he's not as concerned about figuring out who killed Akane. Getting Akatsuki to knock his rivals down a peg would be a win for him, and Akane's mysterious disappearance is sufficient justification that hypothetical Asuma could consider it worth it, especially when Leaf is as weak as it is.

Possibility raised on discord: Get Kagome tested for sealing specjonin and use that as justification for getting him SC

Only thing is, I don't actually know if he'd pass or not. ig Hazou could administer a practice exam first...?

I wonder if jonin make fun of each other's specializations the way that different military branches make fun of each other?

----

"Of course you're a ninjutsu jonin, I've seen your taijutsu forms and they're terrible."

"Oh? You're a social spec jonin? That silver tongue of yours is useless in a real fight."

"A taijutsu spec? Here, I'll pay for lunch." (slides over a box of crayons)

Once he has Shadow Clone, sure. He benefits from knowing about FOOM once he can actually do it himself, and until then it doesn't help him at all. Telling him now would do more than just expand the risk vectors for spreading FOOM (which is a huge problem in its own right, only worthwhile when the other side of the exchange is "Kagome gets to FOOM"), it underlines just how dramatically the rest of the party is pulling ahead of Kagome. He already attributes that gap to Shadow Clone, yeah, but I just don't think it'd be pleasant for him to hear that we pioneered a route to godhood and couldn't bring him with us.
