I think the opsec failure is cute, and I didn't think it was a problem when I read the plan. So what if she figured it out? It's not like it's a clan secret, and we've already monetized it effectively.

Point two: does the mirror have a weapons rating? Honestly the durability seems like it should give it one.
Bricks are also durable to the extent that you're not going to break one in ordinary combat, but this does not give them a weapons rating.

This removes the issues with Hazo not having had any degree of foresight, removes the issue of Kei/Mari not having sanity-checked this at all, and gives us an opportunity to Do The Thing, while still making us deal with the situation. I'd (personally) be happy to spend a FATE point or something to have this happen.
I'm OK with that, but spending FP would require a player vote.

But in this case, the plan didn't call for Hazō to reveal nearly as much information as he did (he could have, for instance, said that he made the mirror using earthshaping to stick together components he acquired elsewhere, or said nothing and kept it mysterious)

I kinda disagree. The plan calls for us revealing a new gem called Inoite. That can't be slapped together with other components using Earthshaping (which is an OPSEC breach in itself, as it calls attention to Earthshaping) and legit be called a new substance or gem. But it being a new substance or gem is the literal entire point of that line. Hazou has to reveal something to her, or the line in the plan doesn't make sense, and the gesture is lost.

Sad you feel that way. Something went astray if a reader recoils from heartfelt engagement with the story.
I wouldn't say I'm recoiling away. I'm going to keep trying to figure this out, after all, even the part of me that's trying to investigate right up at the edge of the black box technobabble. But it's like peering through mud, trying to get a clear picture of things with fuzzy ambiguity on both the object level and the meta level, which is stressful and frustrating. I know the QMs are under no obligation to hand the answer to us, so it's not their fault that this is happening, but that doesn't make the problem any less complex or the ambiguity any less confounding. In the end we just have to keep plodding along until we get lucky, I guess.

Suggestion: Weapons 3 (or whatever Kunai are)
It's not a weapon so it doesn't get a weapons rating. Physical objects get Durability ratings, and have stress tracks equal to Durability/10. To damage an object would usually be a Physique vs Durability roll to determine damage. So Granite (Durability 40) would have a 4 box stress track.

Objects cannot take Consequences, so if they take more stress than fits on their track, they're destroyed.

At least so far as I recall, anyway. I don't think it's ever been relevant in like 5 years of FtD

To be clear this was more of a joke about the fact that we gave her an indestructible mirror, and I imagine that getting brained by it would really, really, really hurt.

That said, I'd be really interested to find out how much durability this thing has, and whether or not that makes ninja armour viable/useful. Sure, Gai can punch through a tree. But can he punch through this? I think that'd be an interesting challenge, at least.

Kei: "Hazou, why did you stop Sanity checking with me again?"

Hazou: "It sure didn't seem to help when we lost opsec on ES50 less than a week after achieving it."

Kei: "I assumed you knew about the risk and had deemed it acceptable, or that you had contingencies."

Hazou: "When have I ever done that? I don't even have contingencies for the seals I make, despite Shikaku chewing me out. I haven't even started making contingencies for MARS, a seal that now exists in enemy hands after they plundered it from Akane's corpse. Or, If she's alive, I haven't even bothered making contingencies for EM Nuke."

Kei: "You're right, you've never thought to the future and it was foolish of me to assume you would have learned."

This is a joke about how I imagine this conversation going.

I concur with the thought that the sanity check was supposed to prevent minor failure like this happening. I imagined that Hazo always run through the conversation and chartflow with his advisors.

Sorry. Was clumsier than your explanation in your own words. Personally, picture it as levers. Solve problems by pulling levers. Simple when you know how many levers there are, difficult when unknown number of levers and some are rude to pull. Part of the fun is not knowing how many levers there are. In a ninja fight, even if you are a world champion backseat sensei there is no lever for throw a right hook. Only for roll taijutsu, and pushing for more is a dick move. No problem if the black box for fixing Great Seal is big and the only levers to pull are put XP in ES or wait for Orochimaru to fix it. But not good if the black box is small but each step into the dark comes with insecurity about being inconsiderate. Asking for clarity to dodge rudeness feels perfectly acceptable.

Not putting words in your mouth.

Sanity check loses information for convenience. How did Kei and Mari feel about disclosing ES? The rest of the clan? Mutinous, eager or torn? Swept under a sanity check that flattened their response into stop us from doing it or do not. Open ended task to write impact report about economic WMD finished in two days. Sanity checks trigger scene interrupts if Kei or Mari thoughts important enough to show but below that threshold information is lost. Most times the convenience is worth it but Kei and Mari can illuminate facets that change reader minds about what to do but not their own counsel. Like asking Mari if this is smart to do. She says yes and explains why. Hearing her explanation makes us not want to do it.

[X] Action Plan: Backtracking
Word count: <300
  • Ino
    • Don't end the date.
    • Apologize: we're a little scrambled.
    • Yes, we can make gems.
      • Asuma knows: he's helping us sell them.
      • Please keep this under wraps: move investments around, but be subtle about it. No one outside Goketsu knows we can do this.
        • If you take losses, we'll make it up to you.
      • We're meeting with Hinata (Hyuuga luxury goods connections, Shino facilitating) to get her help, build Goketsu-Hyuuga relations.
        • Any advice?
    • Regardless - this mirror won't break.
  • Shino:
    • Make one set of high-quality quartz lenses, another set scaled up ~2x, and several lens blanks.
    • Show him, emphasizing partnership, new possibilities - Goketsu materials, Aburame expertise.
      • Reiterate commitment to destroy them at his request.
      • What could his engineers make? Bigger telescopes? Better portable ones?
    • We're entering the gem market. We'd like to work with Hinata. Can he arrange a meeting?
  • Hinata:
    • Bring sample gems, mission paperwork from Asuma.
      • Don't hide that they're insane stones, but refuse to discuss where we got them.
        • Claim 'Dragon bones'.
        • Obvious lie, clearly not open to discussing their origins.
        • Could Neji get to the Great Seal? It'd be helpful.
    • Goketsu materials, Tower intelligence, Hyuuga connections. Perfect match?
    • Tone/subtext: excited about anticipated profit andprospect of Goketsu-Hyuuga relations.
      • We admire/respect Hinata/the Hyuuga.
      • We're tired of making enemies when we could be making allies.
  • Mari/Kei/Snowflake:
    • High-opsec meeting.
      • Tone: deeply confused. Non-accusatory.
    • Did Shikamaru seriously consider the possibility that Akane's mission was leaked?
    • Seems unlikely she was coincidentally attacked by a well-equipped snatch squad.
    • He responded to the topic strangely several times - didn't immediately search when we reported her missing (Asuma was confused/upset), changed the topic when Hidan was mentioned.
      • Is he okay?
    • What's going on?
  • (Offscreen) Ask Asuma/Harumitsu/other knowledgeable people for Hagoromo who we could talk to.
I want to throw out there that voting closes in <24 hours and I'm winning with one vote (mine).

Please vote, write plans, all that good stuff.

Yes, I added the sanity-check to the beginning, also.

Life is crazy in meatspace right now, and the voting cycle is short. All the love to the QMs, but I haven't the spoons for critical thinking skills at the moment. Going to be voting for interludes, and I encourage others to do the same.

Ino date is best update.

Ino kept staring. "You can make gems. You can make new gems. You can make new gems easily enough to just give them away as gifts. Hazō, this is huge. Do you realise what this can do to the entire jewellery trade? To the economy?"

Ino: "Hazou, you don't understand: I YOLO'd my clan's entire retirement and savings fund into shares in a gem mining and processing company. Now you are showing me you can make diamonds with your bare hands?!?! How is a girl suppose to play the market if you casually go around not only breaking the laws of supply and demand, but the laws of physics and geology too?!?!"

[X] Action Plan: Five and the Mourning
Word Count: <300
Time of Plan: 10 days
  • Mari/Kei
    • Getting Kagome SC. Should be easy with Dragons and his sealing, right? If not, what can we offer? Maybe mandatory OPSEC classes for Kagome?
    • Yuno SC as well, and work on Noburi
      • Is it safe for him? Ask Kabuto? Noburi himself?
    • Akane's mission was leaked, we need to find out how/from who and prepare accordingly. Also look into seeing if any of the rest of us are being targeted as such. Also if there are any deniable assets she knows of who could've done this
      • Possible candidates: Asuma? Shikamaru? He was uncharacteristically lax about her death and even Asuma noted it.
        • Why and how? Shikamaru might communicate with the Five for world stability, he's mentioned that before. Wanted to wipe out entire villages for it.
    • Possible collaboration on Mari's training. Looking for optimization, realize we won't have full control
      • Same with Kagome and Yuno, ask how to approach this/to get this.
  • Asuma (likely off-screen)
    • Sanity check with Mari/Kei
    • Discuss getting Kagome SC for Dragonwar. More Kagome-level sealing is big help.
    • Probe about Yuno and Noburi SC also.
    • Continue with lessons
  • Mari
    • Go forth and investigate how to get SC for Kagome, Yuno, and Noburi if nothing comes up immediately.
  • Hazou/Sealing
    • Continue work on Minato's Seals (no prep, reroll -9, 12 calligraphy if chunin seal or lower).
    • Use a clone to multi-thread, work on Directional Explosives (no prep, reroll -9, -12 calligraphy)
      • Once complete, do 1 day prep on Rocket Boots, if chunin seal or lower use same standards as DE, if jonin proceed with full prep.
      • Once Rocket Boots is complete, use shadow clones and 1 day prep to check seals from the list. Have Kagome work on the blood tracking and security seal if possible.
