Orochimaru's Payment for the Dragon Parts

For backpayment, rather than give Noburi a random set of research notes, Orochimaru has provided him with a specialized medical ninjutsu that he previously designed. While it has some limitations, his notes indicate that it should be readily modifiable into something more powerful.

Rapid Rejuvenation
Prerequisites: Medical Ninjutsu 30

Cannot be used before level 10.

A specialized way to use medical ninjutsu in combat-time, allowing you to rejuvenate tired allies in the middle of a fight. As a Standard action, select a willing target in Melee with you and roll a Medical Ninjutsu check against 10*(their current physical stress). You may spend shifts of success equal to their current physical stress rating to lower their physical stress by 1. Examples:
  • Hazō has taken 2 physical stress. Noburi rolls Medical Ninjutsu 30 against TN 20, and gets 4 shifts of success. He spends 2 shifts to take Hazō's stress from 2→1, and 1 more to take Hazō's stress from 1→0, leaving 1 shift unspent.
  • Hazō has taken 3 physical stress. Noburi rolls Medical Ninjutsu 34 against TN 30, and gets 2 shifts of success. He cannot lower Hazō's stress.
  • Jiraiya has taken 4 physical stress. Tsunade rolls Medical Ninjutsu 80 against TN 40, and gets 14 shifts of success. She removes all his stress (since 4+3+2+1 < 14).

The target needs to hold still for a moment to be healed. They do not benefit from the stress reduction if they used their Standard in the current round (and if their initiative hasn't yet passed, accepting the healing removes their Standard).

Any recipient of Rapid Rejuvenation gains the Mild Mental Consequence "Borrowed Energy, Repaid with Interest" after the combat is over (only gained once regardless of how many times Rapid Rejuvenation is used).

Hazō has spent several days scraping through Orochimaru's disorganized pile of notes. He has found good news and bad news. Bad news: he has not offered you any more money or financial assets. Good news: you got more research notes than you were expecting, and there are some jutsu scattered in.

Unfortunately, there's only so much you can learn from studying Orochimaru's style, and unlike Jiraiya's sealing theory magnum opus, the insights are not neatly organized and presented in Orochimaru's live research notes. For the first two sets of Orochimaru notes you study from, you may draw the full amount of XP from them at your full rate. Every subsequent two, your efficacy drops by 25%.

To clarify, suppose Hazō studies 10 sets of Orochimaru's MedNin research notes, worth 100 XP apiece.
  • For the first two, he would be able to draw 100 XP total from each of them at 4 XP per day.
  • For the next two, he would be able to draw 75 XP total from each of them at 3 XP per day.
  • For the next two, he would be able to draw 50 XP total from each of them at 2 XP per day.
  • For the next two, he would be able to draw 25 XP total from each of them at 1 XP per day.
  • Studying the final two, he would find nothing left to learn.
Diminishing returns is a general rule for lootboxes. Jiraiya's sealing theory notes evades the diminishing returns effect by virtue of being intentionally organized to capture the most important information, and being particularly good at that.


The contents of the storage scrolls that Orochimaru gave Hazō has a huge variety of contents. Once organized, they are as follows:
  • Detailed documentation of a variety of specimens, including precise details about their lives, families, and reactions to various reagents meant to elicit information about which spirits are paying attention to them.
  • Ledger-books about decades-old trades with the Snakes.
  • A variety of sealing notes from a huge variety of past projects. Many are encoded, incomplete, or otherwise useless. Still, there are enough remaining to complete the set of sealing notes from Orochimaru. Expressed as lootboxes:
    1. 200 150 XP for Sealing, ¾ rate.
    2. 200 150 XP for Sealing, ¾ rate.
    3. 200 100 XP for Sealing, ½ rate.
    4. 200 100 XP for Sealing, ½ rate.
    5. 200 50 XP for Sealing, ¼ rate.

  • A couple irritated-sounding half-drafted responses to vaguely suspicious letters from Sarutobi Hiruzen.
  • A list of birthday present ideas for Jiraiya.
  • A detailed investigation on how best to keep a patient from screaming if anesthetics cannot be used (apparently, they sometimes choke on the gag at a vital point of the surgery, which is very distracting).
  • Similarly, a tremendous variety of notes about various medical procedures. Noburi explains to Hazō that the notes contain critical insights into the minds of Orochimaru and Tsunade and their thought processes in solving nearly-impossible problems, even clarifying opaque sections of Tsunade's textbooks. Similarly, this completes your set of Orochimaru's notes. Expressed as lootboxes:
    1. 100 / 100 XP for Medical Knowledge & Medical Ninjutsu

    2. Fire Element: Flame Wall – creates large flame barriers that are challenging to pass.
    3. Fire Element: Sundance – a weak offensive ninjutsu that charges up over time if exposed to sunlight.
    4. Earth Element: Bleeding River Impalement – a large-AoE Earth-style ninjutsu.
    5. Wind Element: Vacuum Energy Ball – a ranged, armor-piercing Wind ninjutsu.
    6. Water Element: Surging Seas – a ranged attack that doubles as a movement technique.
  • A half-finished treatise on various types of wound spirits, referencing a future revision not included in these notes.
  • A mundane recipe for an egg custard.
  • Some additional sets of poorly-organized research notes featuring jargon that Hazō cannot understand. Titles indicate this was a short series of ninjutsu design projects conducted with Sarutobi Hiruzen. There are far fewer legible sets of notes here than in either the sealing or medical categories.
  • Various personal notes and reminders written in a cryptic shorthand.
  • And other miscellany.
Any truly useful or OPSEC-sensitive seals, hacked ninjutsu, or medical procedures have been removed from the pile. Orochimaru's research notes only exist at the lootbox level, please don't ask us about the specifics of his projects.


PSA Regarding Lootboxes

There are three statuses for XP lootboxes:
  1. Spent, representing already expended XP.
  2. Banked, representing XP drawn from the lootbox but not yet spent. This is available to raise the skills associated with the lootbox.
  3. Remaining, representing XP still in the lootbox.

You may draw XP from multiple lootboxes in a single day, up to three (similarly to how Shadow Clones can do up to 3 training blocks per day) separate lootboxes. Doing more than one per day fully occupies your day, much like sealing research or summoner training would.

Tracking lootbox XP is now the players' responsibility. The amount of XP drawn from a lootbox per day does not depend on the XP associated with an update – it is a flat 4 (75%: 3, 50%: 2, 25%: 1) per day for Hazō, 3 (75%: 3, 50%: 2, 25%: 1) per day for all the other PCs unless otherwise noted. You must report notes XP in this format (example): "S:35, B:50, R:100" for all lootboxes that aren't either empty or untouched, for all PCs. If notes XP for update N is not reported before update N+1 is released, the associated XP is lost, like with Shadow Clone XP. We may deny notes XP at any time if we judge the associated PCs wouldn't have had time to read.

As this is going to be a fair amount of extra work, we are going to be generous and
assume that for the last few months, Hazō has been reading from Jiraiya's notes in his free time. This only accounts for days where he almost certainly had free time to read (e.g. in Leaf and not training Kagome to summon, on the boat ride to Honey, on the Skytower in Neck), and excludes most of his particularly busy days.

It's possible that this might be a multi-day expedition, since our greatest advantage as scouts is our ability to bug out at a moment's notice and we can't do that if we take puppies with us like Hazou did on the journey to Arachnid.

Also, can we pretty please ask what clans border Arachnid? I need to know, the map calls to me.

This seems to be possible Technique Hacker Notes. So we know if a Technique Hacker would find them useful, or gain anything from them?

That sounds like the violent followup to... Living Roots, I believe it was named? That was hinted at, but never taught to Hazō 🤔

Clearly this should be our number one priority. This is the source of his power: eggs are delicious and nutritious, custard has sugar which our body needs, and presumably Noburi can hold chakra in this recipe specifically which entirely bypasses the issue of water poisoning :D

Noburi will face stagnancy, unless he respecs away from Combat and becomes a purely medic spec ninja. He wants to focus on his medical stats and his bloodline, anyway.

@eaglejarl, @Velorien, @Paperclipped, given the above, how would we go about officially getting Noburi's specialization changed on the meta-scale?

I am definitely under the impression he still wants to be a badass combatant too, he would just rather do medicine if he absolutely had to choose

He quite reasonably wants to be good at everything, like I want Hazou to be :V

But this avoids stagnancy, and lets us boost combat skills as secondary/tertiary, which we were already doing. I'm not trying to game the Specialty system, noooo... Okay, maybe a little.

  • Orochimaru's Sealing notes #5: 100 XP
  • Orochimaru's Sealing notes #6: 100 XP

For these parts of the gigatracker, I think it would be prudent to store the effective XP/day next to them so it's easy to figure out how fast we read each set. I'd recommend a format like:
  • Orochimaru's Sealing notes #3: 150 XP (3/4 rate)
With the coresponandance between ratio and XP/day listed above that section:
4 (75%: 3, 50%: 2, 25%: 1) per day for Hazō, 3 (75%: 3, 50%: 2, 25%: 1) per day for all the other PCs unless otherwise noted.
That way it should be easy to accurately figure out how much XP to mark as banked after each update.

An alternative format that conveys the same information would be:
  • Orochimaru's Sealing notes #3: 150 XP (3, 3)
In which the first 3 represents Hazou's rate, and the second 3 represents everyone else's rate. Makes it a cleaner lookup, but also isn't self-evident in its meaning without additional context.

But regardless, thanks for setting this up! It'll be nice to have something up-to-date that we can always reference back to.
