What kind of activities are you envisioning?

I'm not entirely sure. Perhaps something that would take a few chapters or so, or would be an interesting twist or subversion of things in setting that you or EJ would prefer writing (or an excuse to get out of the metaphorical house as it were). Here's some examples I think might be representative in scope at least (and maybe even potentially appealing).

Umino Iruka glances up from the mission desk.

  • The Sarubetsu mayor has sent a request in for some infrastructure improvements. Seems up your alley. Though why you'd waste weeks of time on this is beyond me.
  • Similarly, a construction company in Wave needs a bodyguard team to protect against local wildlife. Something about sharks and small time bandits? Shouldn't be too problematic.
  • Manpower shortages due to recent tragedies have left the village strangled in terms of international reach. There have been whispers of some missing-nin congregating in Sea country, among them one Mizuki, formerly of the Leaf. Asuma doesn't care what you do with the rest, but drag that one back here alive.
  • The Leaf Academy first year class instructor has come down with a bout of the shiversweats, he should be alright, but you should start making your lesson plans for this afternoon.

Hazou instantly memorizes any seal he sees. He should quickly try to draw the seal he saw before remembering.
Although whether he saw it is ambiguous since he turned too late. But since he knew there was a seal, he might have saw it in that 3rd person omniscient dream view. And also he might have saw it when he entered the room.
Other ideas include making a shadow clone to see whether the shadow clone remembers it better. But in the time to cast a shadow clone he might fully forget everything, so prob not worth it.

edit:
oh shoot I didn't realize voting was closed. it might still be possible retroactively via FPs. although should see if his body remembers before spending the FP in case we don't need to.
just two overworked old men who wish you were your father
the weeping angel is one. anyone got ideas on the other?
also, @Velorien . Is this a typo being "who you wish were your father"?

Making Naruto fall in love with me over the last half-year
this gives a rough timeline. how long has it been since ami came?

"No. It doesn't matter. You are not the one."
Hmm. Could be romantic marriage. Or a prophesied messiah. Tempted to casually ask a Forbidden clan who "the one" is. But could go terribly wrong.

Interesting. Might bear it in mind as an idea.

Nope. @MMKII has it right. Also, while the weeping angels were awesome, Ryūgamine is the Angel Without Mercy.

We already do that with XP. It's the "QM had fun" bonus. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're suggesting?

That's done in post though, for the most part. Y'all generally don't pre-empt us with "It'll be worth some FP to go to the missions desk and shop around for interesting missions." or something equivalent.

Remember the idea we had a little while back about posting jutsu-bounties, where if someone could demonstrate an ability to use [posted jutsu], we'd pay them am amount? The idea was to post noncombat jutsu like the Yamanaka Stability Jutsu, MEW, and other stuff?

We could just straight up fund a program that pays people to become medic nin. The Goketsu provide living expenses during academic period then gives reward money for once they graduate.

Maybe we also could set something up with Tsunade so that the Goketsu civilians who graduate GED find work at the hospital. Sure, they won't be medic nin, but surely there are non-ninja roles that they could fill? Paperwork, assistants, and the like?

And if Tsunade already has civilians doing jobs at the hospital, then we could still provide her with more. And given that they'd be starting out with a GED education, they might be more useful than their non-Goketsu Civilian peers (or at least catch on faster).

We never asked Mari if she wants to help us duel homophobes. And if we want to duel homophobes, and if we're wondering whether Mari would be good or not (optics and tactics) to help us in that, we never ASKED if Mari wants to help, and even easier, if she WANTS to do the punching. If she WANTS to punch, all the Mari-related duel-related problems are solved - Mari is on board to punch and fight and do stuff. If she doesn't, we have clarified insight into Mari's position on the arc. Still interesting and good. Right now she's doing nothing because we want to predict what the best way to use her will be before engaging her.

@faflec et al. For +5 XP could I get a list of all the jutsu Mari has been shown to know? Thanks!
Beyond the Academy Techniques and chakra adhesion/repulsion/snowwalking which I will ignore for obvious reasons...
She blinked as if remembering something. "Oh, yeah. Whatever you choose, I won't hurt you. You're in a forbidden genjutsu called Truth Lost in the Fog. As long as I'm willing to pay the price, I can choose for you to wake up as if you were dreaming, and forget everything you saw and heard.
Elemental techniques that Inoue will admit to having:

Water: Dragon, Whip, Bullet, Syrup Trap, Clone, Hiding in the Mist,
Lightning: That-one-that-lets-you-electrocute-people-through-ninja-wire
NB: Mari may not know all the above techniques, given the rest of the quote was Fire/Earth Release techniques she is not actually privvy to.
Inoue-sensei's hands were a blur of seals.

"Silent Night Technique!"

The kunai dropped out of the ninja's hands as his entire body relaxed—except for his eyes, which remained locked on Inoue-sensei's.

They'd drilled for this sort of thing. Hazō got out a length of ninja wire and approached the enemy carefully, while Keiko prepared to throw kunai at the first sign that he might be breaking free of the genjutsu. Noburi came in from the other side to Hazō, water clones flanking him and ready for action.
Rejoice, mortals genin, for Inoue-sensei has decided it is time for Keiko to master her first Wind ninjutsu.

Having observed Keiko's rising weapons proficiency and all-round awesomeness, she has judged that what Keiko needs is a utility technique to extend her ability to support the team.

You may choose from among the following:

Wind Wall Technique
Warps airflow in a fixed space. The basic form of the technique can deflect projectiles and/or interfere with enemy movement (penalties to Weapons/Tactical Movement). At higher levels, it is possible to change the size and intensity of the Wind Wall, as well as modifying it to alter the speed and direction of one's own projectiles. This technique receives a powerful boost when controlling existing winds, the stronger the better.

Whisper on the Breeze Technique
Creates an isolated pathway through which sound may be transmitted to a target. Use to deliver a verbal message which only the target can hear. Higher levels expand the technique's reach and the maximim length of the message. Line of sight is not required, but you must know the target's vague location, and an excessively complicated path to the target will block the technique.

Zephyr's Reach Technique (aka Totally-Not-Mage-Hand Technique)
Creates an invisible construct that can freely travel within line of sight. It has extremely low carrying capacity and is fragile, but is capable of fine manipulation and strong enough to carry ninja wire (which is itself almost invisible). Higher levels increase distance, carrying strength and the proportion of the user's skill that can be channelled through it when performing complex actions.

Edit: Voting closes same time as the standard update (12 pm GMT on Wednesday 9th), although since you have less time than usual, it may be extended if there is a total lack of consensus.
Here's some genjutsu you can learn: Mari knows lots. They all cost 3 xp unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Betrayal of the Tools - Illusion type. Objects the target is holding appear to become both animate and hostile. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 0.8), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 2.

Paranoia - Illusion type. Sinister laughter coming from nowhere gradually rises in volume. As it continues, familiar voices whisper threats as if standing right behind you, leading to increasing fear and disorientation. Sound is easier than sight: roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 2.

Silence of the Lambs - Illusion type. Allows you to affect the auditory abilities of a target to make them completely deaf. Sound is easier than sight, roll (Genjutsu Skill * 0.9), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 3.

Poison on the Wind - Illusion type. Control your target's sense of smell to make them smell a popular brand of poison gas. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 3.

The Fantastic Amazing Wonderful Packing Crate - Illusion type. Allows you to affect the visual abilities of a target to make them see a single object of whatever form you like. Objects may appear no larger than what a door appears to be from 1.5 metres away. Complexity of illusion is low, roll (Genjutsu Skill * 0.85), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 5.

Burning Agony of the Urethral Papercut - Illusion type. Hijacks your targets senses to cause horrible pain to a limited area. Limited to the greatest level of pain you have ever experienced. High chance of success, but many ninja can fight on through the pain even if you succeed; roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1.2), rounded up for dice. No guarantee that a success will have an effect. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 7.

Dream of the Endless - Dream type. Control all five senses to make your foe believe they are moving through an endless forest, desert, plain, grassland, ect while they stand around and drool in real life. Works best when matched to the terrain they started in. Attentive enemies may notice that because it is pulling from their memory to craft the terrain, they recognise certain trees, stones ect. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 10.

Heaven Viewing Technique - Dream type. Control all five senses to make your target live out their deepest fantasies. Far less effective if used once combat has already begun. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1.1), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 12.

Hell Viewing Technique - Dream type. Control all five senses to plunge your target into their greatest fears, often accompanied with searing agony. Highly applicable to mid-combat. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1.2), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 15.

ooo

Auditory Control - Illusion Creation type. Allows you spend 3 xp to craft and learn a auditory illusion. The bread and butter of the illusionist, has endless possible variations. You need to specify at least vaguely what the illusion does, though details can be customised on the fly. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 8. Dice ratios will be decided upon creation.

Visual Basic - Illusion Creation type. Allows you spend 3 xp to craft and learn a visual illusion. The bread and butter of the illusionist, has endless possible variations. You need to specify at least vaguely what the illusion does, though details can be customised on the fly. For example you might create an illusion of a horde of animals attacking someone, but the exact animals in question and what weapons they have are up in the air. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 9. Dice ratios will be decided upon creation.

Audiovisual Creation - Illusion Creation type. Same as above, but for both sight and sound at the same time. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 11. Dice ratios will be decided upon creation.

Sensory Hijack - Illusion Creation type. Same as above, but works for all five senses to show your target whatever you like. Make them walk off a cliff, lure them into dangerous wildlife, make your friends invisible to their senses then stab them in the face! The possibilities are endless! Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 15.

Sweet Nocturne, the Sublime Art of Creation - Dream Creation type. Allows the crafting of dream type illusions that effect all 5 senses. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 20
"I cheated, of course. I let him nail me with a punch, and fell to the ground pretending to be out of the fight. Didn't take much pretending, actually. Then I looked up at him, tiny five-foot girl, helpless and vulnerable, with doe eyes and my clothing all torn up from his stupid Wind technique. He hesitated for just a second—and bam! Special Hell Technique, one of my very own creations, right to the brain."

She paused, clearly expecting someone to break the suspense.

"Special Hell Technique?" Hazō reluctantly obliged.

"There he is, having sex with the most beautiful woman he's ever met, which is to say me. And then right as his senses are at their most heightened, suddenly everything goes dark, and then the only light is from the dozens of glowing eyes of the twisted eldritch abomination that happens to have his most sensitive part inside it.

"By the time I was done with him, there was hardly anything left to put out of its misery. It wasn't quite another Heartbreaker, sadly, but it was close."
Kagome's panic cut off as Inoue-sensei snagged him in her Sunny Day genjutsu. The tension slid out of his body and he smiled.
"Water Element: Eternal Lullaby Technique!"

The three Leaf-nin jumped to their feet, but nothing seemed to happen, which in some ways was the most terrifying of all possible effects.

Hazō's blood turned cold as ice with realisation. What kind of ninja locked themselves in with a three-man team in a reinforced building where even exploding tags couldn't make an instant escape route?

A prepared jōnin.

Hazō forced his breath into evenness. He was already feeling slightly dizzy just from the enemy's killing intent, and that was unacceptable. So they didn't know her capabilities. She didn't know theirs either. She was already holding a kunai he hadn't seen her draw, but at least it wasn't a sword or a seal. If they could hold her off for just a little while, Noburi could use his mist drain, and even jōnin had no protection against that.

He hoped.

He started to move in, but Minami was way ahead of him. Her body was a sword in itself, cutting through the air with inhuman speed as she crossed the distance to the jōnin.

Her blade came down—

"Hōzuki's Mantle!"
Behind him, Sakura shouted the powerless words to a jutsu she didn't know as a cover for the genjutsu taught to her by that laughing, brilliant, wonderfully evil red-headed witch. Kiba's eyes flicked to the side and back, widening at what he imagined that he saw. He threw himself forward into a roll and Haru went up, cutting handseals and banging his fists together to summon forth the power that was his by right of pain and sweat and effort instead of gifted to him by birth. Kiba was barely back on his feet when Haru smashed his right-hand buckler through the little brat's face with the entire strength of his body and force of his leap behind it. He took care to aim for the jaw instead of the temple; worst case, the kid would be eating his meals through a straw for a few weeks instead of having his head caved in.
"I've got some jutsu I can throw in the pot," Mari said. "Fist of the Lightning God; high-damage, very flashy lightning attack. Jōnin-level technique that should get us lots of points, but there aren't a lot of Lightning-Element ninja in Leaf, so it doesn't cost us much. Ditto for Bile of the Ocean Demons, which is Water Element. Plus the FUBAR technique, although that's small potatoes. Wind Wall. Zephyr's Reach. Not any of my genjutsu, though. I'm not giving those out."

Come to think of it, that's two Halloween updates in a row that ended in "and it was just a (prophetic?) dream". I really would be predictable if that happened a third time.
Is this a.. a.. pre-commitment to post another prophetic dream on Halloween?

It would be interesting to see what sort of twists one could do on this.

> [list of techniques]

Thank you!

> "Water Element: Eternal Lullaby Technique!"

Oh, for heaven's sake. Are you part of the "Mari killed Minami" conspiracy theory? I keep telling you people: Jiraiya did not kill Minami, nor did he directly order Mari to do so.

I have probably brought this up before, but have y'all considered issuing FP bounties for reasonably interesting or exciting (or even weird but in-character?) things? It seems less agency-gordion-knot-screaming than compels did and would probably incentivize that more things to your liking happen while being fun as a reward mechanically speaking!
Ah, I see what you meant. I'm a little uncomfortable actively pushing the players towards something...but, on the other hand, it would be nice to be able to send clear signals about what I'd like to write. Let me and @Velorien chew on it.

Omake: Home Away From Home
Context: Paper on Discord: "Need more sealing research time. Say, do you think the inside of a killbox is a quiet atmosphere?" This is my response to that.

HAZOU: "Hey, Asuma, do you have anyone in my killbox right now?"

ASUMA: "Wait, 'your killbox?' Why would you assu... Actually, I'm going to ignore that part. No, I don't, why?"

HAZOU: "Can I rent it out as a sealing office? Promise I won't try infusing anything there, I just need the quiet space to think for a few hours."

ASUMA: "And you couldn't find any other quiet place in all of Leaf?"

HAZOU: [gestures to all of Leaf right now]

ASUMA: "Fair point. Yeah, go ahead. Third killbox down, on the right."

HAZOU: "Pfft. I know where it is."

(A few moments later)

HAZOU [from a distance]: "Hey, you finally put my name on the plaque!"

You know, Leaf clan headss are supposed to receive intelligence reports from the spymaster (whoever the fuck they are RN). So...

...does anyone else want to go capture Mizuki? You know, once the current shitstorm has passed.
