@Velorien Thanks! Is it possible for us to get spec details (for if/when we offer Akane the scroll)?
Hotaru no Jutsu/Firefly Technique: One persistent spark per level is created and remotely controlled with the user's hands (max 1 per finger). Maximum range is 10 metres. Each spark can have a different target. They can also be expended to ignite flammable materials.

Does that mean you can't go above level ten or that at higher levels you can give up control of one spark to create and guide another?

Here's some genjutsu you can learn: Mari knows lots. They all cost 3 xp unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Betrayal of the Tools - Illusion type. Objects the target is holding appear to become both animate and hostile. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 0.8), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 2.

Paranoia - Illusion type. Sinister laughter coming from nowhere gradually rises in volume. As it continues, familiar voices whisper threats as if standing right behind you, leading to increasing fear and disorientation. Sound is easier than sight: roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 2.

Silence of the Lambs - Illusion type. Allows you to affect the auditory abilities of a target to make them completely deaf. Sound is easier than sight, roll (Genjutsu Skill * 0.9), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 3.

Poison on the Wind - Illusion type. Control your target's sense of smell to make them smell a popular brand of poison gas. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 3.

The Fantastic Amazing Wonderful Packing Crate - Illusion type. Allows you to affect the visual abilities of a target to make them see a single object of whatever form you like. Objects may appear no larger than what a door appears to be from 1.5 metres away. Complexity of illusion is low, roll (Genjutsu Skill * 0.85), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 5.

Burning Agony of the Urethral Papercut - Illusion type. Hijacks your targets senses to cause horrible pain to a limited area. Limited to the greatest level of pain you have ever experienced. High chance of success, but many ninja can fight on through the pain even if you succeed; roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1.2), rounded up for dice. No guarantee that a success will have an effect. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 7.

Dream of the Endless - Dream type. Control all five senses to make your foe believe they are moving through an endless forest, desert, plain, grassland, ect while they stand around and drool in real life. Works best when matched to the terrain they started in. Attentive enemies may notice that because it is pulling from their memory to craft the terrain, they recognise certain trees, stones ect. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 10.

Heaven Viewing Technique - Dream type. Control all five senses to make your target live out their deepest fantasies. Far less effective if used once combat has already begun. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1.1), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 12.

Hell Viewing Technique - Dream type. Control all five senses to plunge your target into their greatest fears, often accompanied with searing agony. Highly applicable to mid-combat. Roll (Genjutsu Skill * 1.2), rounded up for dice. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 15.

ooo

Auditory Control - Illusion Creation type. Allows you spend 3 xp to craft and learn a auditory illusion. The bread and butter of the illusionist, has endless possible variations. You need to specify at least vaguely what the illusion does, though details can be customised on the fly. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 8. Dice ratios will be decided upon creation.

Visual Basic - Illusion Creation type. Allows you spend 3 xp to craft and learn a visual illusion. The bread and butter of the illusionist, has endless possible variations. You need to specify at least vaguely what the illusion does, though details can be customised on the fly. For example you might create an illusion of a horde of animals attacking someone, but the exact animals in question and what weapons they have are up in the air. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 9. Dice ratios will be decided upon creation.

Audiovisual Creation - Illusion Creation type. Same as above, but for both sight and sound at the same time. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 11. Dice ratios will be decided upon creation.

Sensory Hijack - Illusion Creation type. Same as above, but works for all five senses to show your target whatever you like. Make them walk off a cliff, lure them into dangerous wildlife, make your friends invisible to their senses then stab them in the face! The possibilities are endless! Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 15.

Sweet Nocturne, the Sublime Art of Creation - Dream Creation type. Allows the crafting of dream type illusions that effect all 5 senses. Learnable at Genjutsu lvl 20

I wonder if we can build a nin-taijutsu style for Akane off of this. Just speculation, but I think it would be worth loss of an arm (as in it's occupied, not that we'd hack one off as a blood sacrifice to the dice) to have such a useful tool in disrupting footwork/attacking from behind. You basically can create your own flankers with this.

Also, I wonder if the sealess version's main loss if power or control. If it's control, then she could cast it when her opponents dodge a spearhand/knifehand strike, or with a single finger in a blade lock situation.

Can we make them see an appropriately sized flashbang (without the bang, obviously)? Like, make them see something that literally blinds them via pure light?

Well you can make a large sheet of extremely bright white, which would blind them over an area no larger than how big a door looks from 1.5 metres away. Which is actually a surprisingly large angle of view if you try it. Of course, they'd probably realise it was an illusion quite quickly since few real objects act like that.

The eyes themselves however wouldn't actually have any light hit them, so it would be somewhat less effective than a proper flashbang. Since proper flashbangs make your irises contract like crazy and give you afterimages, which screws you up going forwards.

Her restrictions are rather more severe than you seem to think.

Ah, good thing you dug up the quote, it was indeed a bit harsher than I remember but I still think getting hacking for Keiko first is the better idea. Notice how Jackercracks says it's likely that she will stick to known techniques; that doesn't sound like it's impossible for her to create something of her own. She most definitely can do her own research and doesn't have to shoved to a lab assistant position.

I wasn't really thinking that Hazou just gives her a random jutsu idea we come up with, but more along the lines of: "You know that cool wind jutsu that you use to make big gusts of wind to block kunai? Maybe you could tune its power output and control and make it so you can fly with it?" She can most likely do those kind of "small" changes and we get to see how technique hacking works and then we can make an informed decision about funneling some of our Sealing XP towards hacking and how useful it could be.

I mean, we will end up getting Technique Hacking for Hazou at some point. But we already have Sealing for that niche so I don't see it as a big priority for a long time. Better have Keiko do it and use her to reap whatever easy benefits there are to get for having a technique hacker in the team. Lack of creativity won't hamper her skills to teach it to Hazou (and others) at some point.

That being said, I notice that there is an Intelligence requirement in Genjutsu. We could funnel Keiko in that direction but I think creativity will be her undoing there too.

Even if Kei is limited to techniques she's seen...that's still a really useful ability, to reverse engineer jutsu used against us, and we're much more likely to run into other ninja using ninjutsu than to run into ninja who are using seals for her to reverse engineer.

@Jackercracks How skilled do you have to be in Technique Hacking to improve on a preexisting known jutsu (e.g., make it so Zephyr's Reach can handle a heavier load)?

You know, I'm really not sure. My instinctive reaction is that to make it straight up stronger in one way you'd need to either make it weaker in some other way, or make it cost more. Just guessing here, I'd say something between level 5-8 to make changes though that is subject to revision.

Man, I'm torn on Akane learning from this scroll. On one hand, it'll give us a multiple-opponent option, but it's also more dangerous to learn from a scroll than from a living teacher, and this is probably even worse because it's the first fire jutsu that she's ever learned, and there are no Fire teachers available.

You know, there's an awesome technique that completely blinds everyone in the vicinity of the user and would certainly bring with it stupid penalty die to Awareness if the victims weren't used to fighting in it...just a thought.

Is this what the technique is really called? Because, AFAIK, Urethral refers to the internal ducts that carry urine from the bladder to outside of the body.
Well it's more of a joke name really. Still, that duct also breaches the surface of your skin, and if you imagine what it would feel like to get a papercut there... well.

To make sure I've got how this works right:

At genjutsu level 10 for instance, we could spend 3xp to learn Betrayal of the Tools. It has no level independent of the Genjutsu level and would be cast at 80% of the Genjutsu level (8 dice).

We could spend another 3xp to learn The Fantastic Amazing Wonderful Packing Crate. This would be cast at 85% of the Genjutsu level, rounded up (9 dice).

We could spend another 3xp to learn Paranoia, which is cast at 100% of the genjutsu level (10 dice).

We could spend another 3xp to learn Burning Agony of the Urethral Papercut, which would be cast at 120% of the Genjutsu level (12 dice).

Just to make sure that I understand the rules perfectly.

Okay, my plan is that we don't buy attributes specifically for Genjutsu, but that we keep Genjutsu at-cap.

Whenever new Genjutsu levels become available because we bought attributes for other things, we buy the shiny new Genjutsu levels as well.
