To this day, I still remember the rollercoaster of emotions that was the first April Fool's update. I actually had to put down my phone for a bit when Kagome was revealed to actually be Itachi. It was great, but now we know to expect stuff like this on holidays (and the occasional genjutsu fever-nightmares that Mari trains us with) so I end up getting suspicious quickly when things veer this wildly. It might be worth it to do more existential horror fake outs like when Kagome revealed that the fundamental nature of ninjutsu changes every few years and the universe destroys all knowledge of this fact within minutes of it being written or heard. (Actually, was that even a fake out? I don't remember the resolution to that but I recall Kagome being very hesitant to talk about his weird henge in chapter 74.)
First of all: The disappearance of henge WAS a prank, right, QM's?
Secondly, I completely and wholeheartedly agree that, if you (QM's) want to, you should post prank updates on random (or seemingly random :drevil:) days; as is, the predictability ruins much of it. When I was catching up on the story from 2yrs behind, I didn't stop to look at the dates, which made the Itachi scenes way more fun and effective.
Looking forward to more plot twists! :D

Of course, this is all based on the assumption that you enjoy making these.

First of all: The disappearance of henge WAS a prank, right, QM's?
Only Kagome knows the answer.
Of course, this is all based on the assumption that you enjoy making these.
Opportunities to exercise creativity? Not being constrained by canon or player plans? Being able to inflict elaborate suffering on the innocent? You couldn't pay me to stop.

(This isn't true. It would just take a lot of money.)

Chapter 387: Aura

"...and sign here."

Hazō scribbled his signature on the bottom of the latest document Gaku had handed him. The tidy little man took the page from him and put it tidily on a tidy and none-too-little stack of paperwork. He smiled the smile of a man who momentarily dwelled in a universe that was precisely as it should be: Neat. Orderly. Tidy. Hazō chuckled to himself at the direction of his thoughts.

"And that's the last of it, My Lord. Do you have anything for me?"

"As a matter of fact, I do," Hazō said, rubbing his hands together.

"Our latest efforts to crush the Hagoromo like the bigoted jackasses they are, My Lord?"

Hazō stared at his secretary in surprise. "'Bigoted jackasses they are'? Gaku, that was remarkably...aggressive for you."

Gaku hmphed quietly. "My Lord, they denigrated your sister. Granted, she is rarely around yet she is still part of the clan, is she not?"

"She is indeed."

"In that case, My Lord, what may I do in my small way to assist?"

"Two things. First, the Hagoromo paper mill. Destroy their inventory and all their supplies. Don't touch the mill itself. Talk to Mari about who to send; she should have a list ready by lunchtime."

"Yes sir."

"Second, their smith. We already burned him out and he's had time to get into a bit of a panic, so let's solve that for him." He handed over a letter for Gaku to review. "I want you to go out to him and negotiate this deal. Reo, Mai, and a trio of the kids will escort you." It might seem like a huge escort for a short and relatively safe trip, but in truth it was only adequate. Reo was missing his leg above the knee and Mai had horrific burns down her right side that made it hard for her to move well. Granted, he was a ninjutsu-spec and she had retrained herself as a ranged weapons expert. Hazō didn't particularly care which three genin the two senior ninja chose; the trip was short and the land around Leaf was mostly cleared of dangerous animals. It was wildly unlikely that the group would run into any challenges.

Gaku skimmed through the document. "Full replacement of his forge and tools, details to his spec. Living expenses covered for two years. One generous grant for initial materials, additional loans at low interest after that if necessary. A promise of a certain value of goods ordered annually, with cash payment for any amount in arrears. Offer is contingent on him living on the Gōketsu estate or unaffiliated land and the Gōketsu being his sole customer." He looked up. "Sir, this is essentially an offer of adoption into the clan, but it doesn't actually offer that."

Hazō shrugged. "If he isn't part of a clan yet then it has to be because he values his independence. If he wants to join, I have no objection. It's not required."

"I see. And why am I going?"

"You're negotiating the deal. That"—he pointed at the list—"is the maximum I feel like I can commit, although when you get there feel free to use your judgement if you think it would be smart to substitute part of the list for something I didn't think of."

"I see. And my escort?"

"Reo and Mai need to be reminded that they are still capable. They've been getting a bit down lately. The kids are there to get some field experience in a safe environment, and in the hope that they'll listen to their seniors and absorb some hard-earned experience."

"With respect, sir, the reason that Reo and Mai are 'feeling down' is because they see themselves as charity cases. They aren't part of the clan but they are allowed to live here on sufferance, knowing that you might send them away at any time if they displease you."

"You know I wouldn't do that."

"I do, sir. They don't. They're living on tenterhooks, as are all the other ninja. They all believe that you haven't adopted them because they aren't good enough. They're old, or crippled, or useless, and you're tolerating their presence out of pity."

Hazō sighed. "Gaku, I want to adopt them. I intend to adopt them. I literally can't. We don't have the adoption tickets. I've already made clear that I'm going to be doing it as quickly as I can. We get our tickets at the new year."

"With respect again, sir...you had two tickets. You used one of them for Lady Akane; no one begrudges that. She was your sister-in-arms for years, of course you would adopt her. You used the second for Lord Haru, not anyone on the estate. You then bought a third ticket which remains fallow. I respectfully suggest that Reo and the others are quite justified in their feelings."

Hazō sighed. "Fair. I'll see what I can do."

"If it helps, sir..." Gaku reached into his leather messenger bag, riffled through, and brought out yet another sheet of paper covered in lines and lines of neat handwriting. "This is a list of all the unused adoption tickets in Leaf that I was able to concretely identify. Also, I note that some inspection of relevant and rather obscure law reveals that the Second Hokage granted anyone raised to the rank of full jōnin for meritorious service in the field the right to form their own clan should they so desire. It was actually a political move—the Fuchigama Clan Head had a son who was a toddler. The Clan Head married a clanless woman with an adult son, Tadanari, who was older than the birth son and a chūnin. Tadanari and his adoptive father held polite contempt for one another but kicking the son out was politically infeasible. At the same time, having a strong adult ninja as a son but not having him be the heir would have looked bad as well. The Hokage broke the logjam by promoting Tadanari and allowing him to marry his girlfriend and form a separate clan."

Hazō smiled sadly. "I wish. If it worked then any jōnin or senior chūnin who is currently clanless could potentially do the same, claim adoption tickets, and sell them to us. That would be great. Unfortunately, Ami had us call and lose a vote in the Clan Council. Clanless ninja aren't allowed to form new clans."

"Oh."

"Sorry. It was a great idea."

"Thank you, sir."

"On that image of a better world where stupid old men don't get in the way," Hazō said, standing up and brushing his shirt straight, "I need to meet up with Kagome-sensei for a working lunch. I'll be busy until mid-afternoon and then I need to talk to Mari about some training."

"Excellent, sir."

o-o-o-o

The working lunch ran long, so the sun kami was most of the way home before Hazō caught up with his former teacher. She was on the Gōketsu training field, flowing through a half-speed soft-style taijutsu kata that focused on flexibility and balance.

"Got a sec?" he asked.

"Sure. You mind if I keep going?" She turned a slow quarter circle, then parried a notional punch with both hands and shifted forward, trapping her theoretical opponent's wrist in one hand while delivering a palm strike to his nose. Based on the position of her arms, her opponent was substantially taller than she was. Perhaps even as tall as Lord Hagoromo.

"I've been thinking about this duel that we're trying to make happen with Hagodickface."

She chuckled and bent forward, striking down at the calf to collapse the knee while also kicking perhaps-Hagoromo in the crotch. She finished by rolling to the side, her whole weight against the knee to knock her off-balance opponent over while keeping his calf pressed tight to her chest.

"I've been thinking a lot about how to win it, and I realized I don't have a good idea of how strong a jōnin even is. It leaves me with a lot of questions...why wasn't he at the Battle of the Gods with all the other jōnin? Will his age work against him—bad joints, old wounds, stiff fingers, that kind of thing?"

"He was on vacation in Hot Springs," Mari said calmly, continuing the roll to force her opponent onto his face, coming up to her knees and then shifting her right hand and turning her upper body sharply to the left in order to snap the ankle. "And no, I don't think his age is likely to slow him down much."

"I see." He considered that for a moment, chewing on his lip in thought. "What about his jōnin aura? Is he going to be able to flatten me instantly, just by looking at me?"

"Yes. Whether he will depends on the political statement he wants to make. One option is a psychic attack that leaves you on the ground. Another is to engage in taijutsu and show how superior his skill is to yours. They both have disadvantages."

"Oh?" That was...probably good news?

"He's seen you fight—every ninja in Leaf has seen you fight, especially during that stint you had after Akane dumped you, where you went and challenged every jōnin you could find to a spar. You're very good for your age and you have several unusual jutsu that enhance your abilities. Despite that, you're good for your age. He's probably sure that he can beat you in a melee fight, but he would have to work for it. Parenthetically, I'm not sure he could if you were allowed to go full lethal, but that's not the case. Back on topic: In order to get the right effect he would need to utterly destroy you and he probably isn't sure he could do that.

"On the other hand, his psychic attack would, as you put it, flatten you. Almost no one who lacks a jōnin aura can stand up to one. The reason it isn't used in battle more often is that concentrating your aura sufficiently for an attack requires enough focus that you're distracted from your surroundings for a few seconds. If you attack another jōnin then whoever has the strongest aura will likely win, so you might end up getting hurt by your own reflected attack. On top of that, if you were the one who initiated the attack then you will be distracted and they won't. Given those odds, using it on an equal or better isn't a good plan. If you do it on a weaker opponent who has friends then you take the risk of getting one person and then being hit by another. That's the calculation that Hagoromo is doing: If he drops you with a psychic attack but immediately gets taken out by one of your team, that doesn't accomplish the shaming that he'll be looking to administer.

"The best message would be to do both—psychically blast you and simultaneously take down one of your teammates. On the other hand, he's got to be figuring that he'll be fighting you and at least one other Summoner. Summons are a dangerous unknown; it's basically the ability to conjure a jōnin out of nowhere with no idea what their training might be. If you know a ninja's specialization it makes it a lot easier to fight them. You close with people who throw, you maintain range against people who punch, that kind of thing. Who knows which summons an enemy will pull out or what they can do?" She backrolled to her feet and ended the kata with a downward flutter of hands.

"Anyway, that's the basics," she said, grabbing a towel to wipe off the sweat. "The most likely result is that he simply refuses to spar with you. There isn't a lot of win for him, so we'll need to make an effort to motivate him." She tossed the towel on the ground and picked up a water bottle, taking a long pull before dumping some of it across her face. "Ahh, that feels good."

"I see." Hazō thought about it. "Mari, how would I do against you?"

She took another pull on the water bottle, maintaining eye contact the entire time with a measuring, level stare. "You serious?" she asked, pausing in her drink.

Hazō nodded.

She tossed the bottle aside without looking, then took a step closer and settled into a relaxed fighting stance. "Try it and see," she said, grinning. "You and me, straight spar. I'll pretend to be him—I think my lightning jutsu are decent approximations of his fire jutsu. You can't use summoning or your claws because he'll insist on that."

Hazō thought about that one. "Okay." He leapt forward without warning, leaning into the power of his bloodline and the strength of his deceitful Roki combat style. He would close in before she knew what was happening and ruffle her crimson hair in repayment for all the times she'd done it to him.

He grinned when Mari fell for it. She contemptuously ignored the snap kick that was the first feint, raised her hands to parry the straight left that was the second, and wasn't fast enough to evade when he lunged to the right and lashed out with a sidekick to the ribs.

The world shattered as Mari dropped the genjutsu and kicked him in the crotch. She was one step farther away then he had expected and his kick had left him standing on one foot with the other raised, hands high and out of position against a low attack.

Hazō, Alertness: 33 + 3 (dice) = 36
Mari, genjutsu: more than 36

Hazō, Deceit (attempting to get Roki against the Deceit specialist who helped him invent Roki): hahahaha

Hazō, Taijutsu: 43 + 0 (dice): 43
Mari, Taijutsu + tag 'Not Where You Thought I Was' -3 (dice): ?

He collapsed to the ground, curled over and gasping in pain. "That...that was..."

"The way I won the CQC tournament the second time? Yup."

Hazō focused on breathing slowly and deeply until the pain was under control and then he climbed awkwardly to his feet.

"I don't think Lord Hagoromo is a genjutsu user," he griped.

"You asked how you would do against me," his teacher said, completely unrepentant. "I lie and cheat. You know that." She gestured at her tiny frame and looked soulful. "I have to. I'm so little and weak compared to all you big strong men. If I had to fight fair all of you would just destroy poor little me." She even went so far as to quiver her lower lip and somehow managed to make her eyes mist up.

Hazō snorted. "Let's try that again."

"Nah, I'm good."

He glared at her in frustration. "You aren't going to give me another shot?!"

"Not today I'm not." She stuck her tongue out at him.

He took a breath and let it out noisily. "Fine. Then help me with something else, would you?"

"Depends on what it is, but probably."

"Jōnin aura. Can you show me yours? I want to see if I can resist it."

"You can't."

"Are you sure? I resisted Zabuza's enough to say what I needed to say."

She shook her head in disbelief. "Hazō, I promise, I can take you down if I want to. Any experienced jōnin can. The reason you resisted Zabuza, even a little, was because he was trying not to hurt you. He didn't want to be the first to break Exam truce by actually injuring a Leaf ninja."

"Show me. I need to learn to resist it. Just...hold back a little?"

"...Fine. Lie down. Noburi would kill me if I let you fall over and rattle your brains even more."

Hazō hastily complied.

"Every jōnin aura is unique," Mari lectured. "It is a manifestation of your soul, of the purest essence of who you are. As you gain in age and power your soul expands until it stretches out of your body and touches those around you, showing them your personal truth. This is what it feels like to be around me when I'm not keeping my soul chained up."

The temperature around Hazō spiked as tiny flames licked across his skin. He glanced down in panic, only to find that the flames were purely in his mind. He could feel them, dancing and playful on his skin, but they weren't real. The impish sense that lightly scorched here and soothingly warmed there, it was purely metaphysical.

"Okay..." He trailed off, not really sure what to say. The fire was in his mind, heating his brain and making it hard to concentrate.

"And this," Mari said, "is what it feels like when I focus."

Hazō, [stat redacted until you have your own jōnin aura and need the mechanics] + 0 (dice): ?

Mari, ? + multi-tag "The Hidden Flame" + 3 (dice): vastly higher than Hazō

Mari pulls her punch. Hazō receives a Mild Mental Consequence, "Phantom Burns", but is not otherwise injured.

The world was fire. It poured from her body with no handseals, no spoken word, torrents of blazing bright rivers of flame that flooded into him through every orifice. His bones were lava, his blood molten lead. He opened his mouth to scream—

And the pain was gone. Mari's soul was back in its bottle and the world was normal again. Hazō lay gasping on the grass.

"Ow." The pain was gone...mostly. His bones still felt burned, his skin still felt scorched.

"I warned you."

Hazō nodded weakly. "You did. And you're confident that Hagoromo can do that?"

"Almost certainly. Also, remember what I said about a person's soul expanding as they age. The larger your soul, the more effective as a weapon. I'm twenty-mumble. Hagoromo is in his forties."

"...Oh."

Low on spoons, but it was a lovely update! Main points:

--Gaku steals the show when he shows up, and is an utter delight.

--we're about to adopt EVERYONE! Muhahaha!

--Mari is awesome, though I was hoping that our Forged in Fire would protect us, but considering that aura is soul magic weirdness, I can understand how it wouldn't.

--Kinda wonder how we can begin growing Hazou's soul faster?

--Is it really "age" that determines the strength of a soul, or is it just "experience?" Jiraiya seemed to believe it was unity in one's sense of self, but Mari seems to believe otherwise? Is there a point where these two concepts overlap?

--Kinda want to know how Ami managed to nurture her soul to the point where she has an Aura. Of course, considering Ami is Ami, she might have had side effects. We should probably ask her at some point...

--our next action plan should include meeting with her to clear the air.

PSA: The grue strikes again!

@Velorien reminded me that there is a law against clanless ninja making new clans. A law that Hazō called to the vote at Ami's request, so I can't legitimately claim that he forgot about it. Update modified accordingly.

Hm, so aura training is out. I assume the reason Ami and Keiko or maybe even Naruto(?) would have aura because Ami and Keiko legitimately have multiple identities which is like having multiple people inside one body. I'd say Naruto taking advantage of SC produced a similar effect.

EDIT: Keiko doesn't have aura but FS aura. You get the point.

Another Aura for Hazou's collection! We've got some rare ones already, from auras who have stopped publication, but as they say, more is more.

SC Math for Chapter 387 (Applied):
@eaglejarl, @Velorien
By the SOPs, Keiko is training with 4 clones and Akane is training with 3. With 4 base XP, the SC payouts are:
  • Keiko: +1.6 XP (4 x0.4)
  • Akane: +1.2 XP (4 x0.3)
All previous payouts are accounted for.

[] Proto-plan: Aura Training
  • You may not get an aura right away, but there may be some things you can do to speed the process up.
  • Meditate on the burns Mari gave you. Feel where in your being that they lie. Focus on these surfaces.
  • You've tasted multiple auras. Think of identity along their associative metaphorical logic.
    • Mari = Flames
    • Orochimaru = Vivisection
    • Ami = Ice
    • Jiraiya = Inferno of Damned Souls
    • Zabuza = Biting Demon
    • Hiruzen = Grandfather
    • Keiko(?) = Frozen Mirrors
    • Haru(?) = Chained Raging Animal
    • Hazou = ???
  • What are the core elements of your identity that wouldn't be common to most other people?
    • Uplift (drive to improve the situation instead of merely preventing it from getting worse, everyone gets saved; no exceptions)
    • The Thing (sudden flashes of insight, inconsistent strategic brilliance with a risk of catastrophic miscalculation)
    • List-maker (high effort to catalogue your ideas, plan things out, and create contingencies)
    • Innovator (love of problem-solving and invention, turning things upside down)
  • Let your mind wander. What forms do these concepts coalesce to?
  • Remember in Asuma's office, when you met his gaze and refused to back down on protecting Leaf. Forget the argument itself, and dredge up that feeling of determination that even the lord hokage was not allowed to argue with.
  • Face yourself.

You may wish to factor in that this update took place on the 30th of August.

Why is Hazo sending Gaku? He's too valuable to die. And we haven't seen that Gaku is good at negotiating.
Good to see Gaku likes/trusts us.

Hazō, [stat redacted until you have your own jōnin aura and need the mechanics] + 0 (dice): ?
@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail
I thought we already had the mechanics from when Zabuza used his aura on us? He was holding back, but it was mentioned that meant he wasn't using FPs or Aspects. And I assume that he could pull a punch. But shouldn't the mechanics be similar? Especially since Mari was also holding back on Hazou. If so don't we already know the redacted stat is Resolve, and that the stat Mari was using is intimidation? Also last time you made an exception and allowed Hazou to use Forged in Fire despite it not fitting the stunt text. Since this is a similar situation would it apply as well?

This is a proto-plan. I leave such things as "having a basic awareness of the passage of time" to those insane people who write action plans.
I remember Asuma and Itachi giving Hazou a brief glimpse of their auras. Asuma's was vaguely bonfire and Itachi was something about insane pinwheels spinning, working as a grindstone to wear away at the world... You might also want to factor in what Jiraiya said about Dazou: not a jonin/kage/something but had an Aura that could flatten most jonin.

More data points.

Now aren't we glad we asked Mari about how we'd fare against a Jonin? When I first pitched the suggestion, it was intended that Mari spar us with pure taijutsu, but I suppose it would've been uncharacteristic of her to do so. Anyway, she still gave us her prediction on how we'd do in a fight against Lord Hag, which was invaluable.

Note: just as Lord Hag will not instantly incapacitate us with his Jounin aura the moment the spar starts, we cannot explode Lord Hag with hundreds of planted explosive tags the moment the spar starts. We must find a way to win the spar that does not also massively damage our reputation and honor.
(Assuming we even go through with the spar of course. )

You know, this Jonin Aura stuff sounds a bit like Nen from Hunter x Hunter.

The right way to defend against it seems like it would be to not be exposed to it. We need to experiment. Is it blocked by MEW? By three meters of dirt? thin sheets of lead? If we discover the secrets, we can't use them for this fight, but we still need to know.

I note that normal physical barriers do not appear to be a hard obstacle to most of the psychic or psychic-adjacent effects in setting. Genjutsu requires line of sight, but this appears to be a user targeting issue rather than a hard limitation.

We've felt Jiraiya get lolmad from the Kage box before, and Shadow Clones can transfer memories back to the user seemingly without regard for obstacles, and Occam's Razor suggests they probably send information through the same medium.

I suppose we could see if a big sealed room made out of lead does anything, but I'm not holding my breath on that.

Imagine if the only way to block auras is via a Faraday cage

I do note that Hana mentioned something like "Chakra times willpower" being a factor, and I can think of a way to increase both of those substantially, just not in the same meatbag/physical body. That last bit is a bit of a problem, but perhaps we can get around it just by having the Hazous Gouketsu concentrate really hard or something.

Though if its possible for Keiko to just glare at people and make them feel psychic pressure or whatever, then it might be possible to do the same but with something more defensive.

I see no particular reason why this should be limited to the doom glare, but maybe chakra is just dumb like that (which would suck).

The shadow clone's memories leave the shadow clone as it pops, but are unable to reach you due to the barrier, and remain free-floating. Congratulations, you have created a replica of your mind which is composed of pure information.

Welcome! Memevotes are done with capital Chi's instead of an 'X', and once we nab Isobu and stick them in here we need to remember to be extra careful to read their votes and plan accordingly if they're being too mean.

The extradimensional nexus is to the right, don't poke it, we're waiting for a plumber.
