Hey, y'know who might have lots of Hyuuga secrets and an interest in exploiting them to their disadvantage?

The Minami.
"The children escaped," Minami corrected. "Their parents weren't willing to see them culled, and fought back. Not all of them survived. After that, the Hyūga hunted us. Like animals. We weren't even a threat to them—nobody could extract clan secrets that we didn't have. They hunted us, and we fought, and we were nearly wiped from this world.

Jiraiya's notes includes food recipes. What if we added them to the Jaybird's menu? Would that help its popularity?

@Oneiros this isn't about the good of leaf, that's just the fig leaf we can use if asked by third parties. This is because we want our friends to be happy and because fuck the Hagoromo for being bastards.

If we do this, and I say that we should, we need to be stealthy. It's not enough that there should be no evidence, there shouldn't even be the suspicion that the Goketsu were connected to the fall of the Hagoromo.

There's no due process and there are no Miranda Rights in the Leaf. Sure, Asuma has to keep the clans happy, but the Goketsu clan doesn't have much pull, and most of our favors were spent getting Hazou out of his most recent killbox. Some clans would probably be in favor of getting rid of us, no matter the excuse needed to do so.

We need to make sure that this cannot be traced back to us, even in the most tangential of ways.

If they where not actively hurting leaf I would be ok with just working around them. Since they are trying to endanger our home with there bigotry they get destroyed to send a message

Can you expand on this? I am failing to make the connection between them slighting one of our family and actively endangering Leaf.

"Destroying" a clan for doing this is disproportionate retribution in the very extreme, and while I can understand the need to defend our family, I do not share the attitude of escalating this quickly.

Think about it: we have to work with Leaf clans in the future and even those that do not always agree with us. We don't want to be known as a volatile clan that will turn on others for the smallest of slights, especially when we can't do it for the bigger and more powerful clans. We need to come across as reliable and trustworthy to be appealing to allies. And yes, showing teeth and not rolling over is part of this - when appropriate. But this isn't it.

And no, trying to be clever and not letting it get traced back to us will not work (plus it wouldn't "send a message"). It doesn't take Nara level intellect to infer who would be responsible about ruining a clan that refused to officiate a wedding for the Goketsu.

Well I find compromising with bigots who endanger national security also troubling. So everything is all equal in this conversation

If bigots don't know any better, then they should be educated. You escalated toward the destruction of a clan just because some members hold bigoted views and didn't know any better.

And, oh, I am not talking about compromising with bigots.

You exaggerate. I find puntitive attitude and overreactions to problems troubling.

I think it's pretty much undeniable that if the Hagoromo could be erased from Leaf it would be a net positive. We just need to make sure that the process of removing them isn't more damaging to Leaf in the long run..

Disportionate retribution doesn't really help with the uplift message. Beside, destroying a clan implies making whole families poorer or dead just because elders are bigots.

To me this reads as, "this was genocide because they pursued the children who knew nothing important when they could have focused on the adults, some of whom survived."

I love 80s movies as much as the next recursively self-reflective agent, but I refuse to believe that a group of scrappy youths survived a guerilla civil war in an urban environment against an overwhelming force of elite scouts and fighters, each of whom could casually see literally anything for literally miles around them. Some adults must have survived, and they must know some pretty hefty limits to the Hyuuga blood-limit for anybody to have survived.

We should tap them for help, and then we'll know exactly what not to do.

-because the bastards have already betrayed us once to side with the Hyuuga. Whatever the opinion of the uninculcated younger generation, the elders are clearly as pragmatic and ruthless as Hinata and she will have seen that move coming. If by some dark miracle I'm wrong and it wouldn't get back to her we can ask Mari to ensure some sort of plausible leak. Thinking she's a move ahead Hinata will shift her pieces out of position while we flank her.

The question is, what flank? I seem to recall that they are actually in pretty dire financial straits after committing to get the turtle scroll and losing both the Hokage salary and most of their jounin. I also recall that they seem to be by far most heavily invested in luxury goods, which are in low demand during hard times.

Gee, what would go well with a chocolate empire?

We need to find an independent clan to coordinate with on this. Ideally one with even more clout than even the Hyuuga.

Gee, which higher founder clan has a sympathetic and widely beloved bisexual matron in charge who likes weddings and open bars?

For that matter, which higher founder clan is hosting and housing the new KEI clan and clearly under the thumb of the omnipotent sister of the wife to the head of the most important combined trio of clans in Leaf?
