I would like to suggest that a way to remedy this issue -- on both the player and QM end, this isn't just addressed to y'all -- is to get more minions we care about enough that reading about their exploits is exciting, but not so much that we're not willing to send them marching to their death doing exciting things. :p

My main reason not to like the addition is that going through Asuma makes it less likely we'd get to keep it.
But we can't not go through Asuma for something like that, because thats sort of quasi-treason to do without permission (at least) and Naruto will be staring at us contemplating whether we need to eat some Rasengans for breakfast ?

But people are allowed some decision making when it comes to scrolls, right? Gai got to leave it to his team, and that was fine, rather than it being state property. I'm just saying there's a difference between "hey we have a good lead on a scroll, mind if we go see if we can grab it?" And "do you have any Intel on a mission we could do, that happens to be acquiring a scroll for Leaf?"

To me, the thing that gets you the property rights is mostly the "And then you went out and actually did the leg work to get the physical object" bit. The intel isn't actually useful if its just sitting around doing nothing, or if its only a lead that would help you acquire a more solid lead (or that you have to combined with another lead you have generated yourself, etc.).

If it ever boils down to "And so we acquired this summoning scroll and need to convince Asuma to let us do whatever with it", then as long as we didn't botch things up until that point, I expect the thread to be able to come up with a sufficiently good argument that it works about 100% of the time.

This. Note how, back when we were missing-nin, Jiraiya gave us intel about the Scroll and then didn't take it away when we found it. And we were missing-nin back then, not a voting Leaf clan.

J did say that he didn't think the Intel would pan out at the time, and taking it from us once we appeared with Keiko as a signed summoner would have meant wiping us out. But yes, I get it.

That's adorable. Have I had a chance to mention my reflexive response to authority figures yet?
I know. It would be fascinating to see what happens, ideally from telescope distance.
Is that back-of-the-envelope accurate at all? If so, it sounds like we need to just figure out ways to advance our goals (that are palatable and in the simulationist and rational spirit of things) in a manner that is less "This suck eggs" and more "Wow this is cool. Everyone is having a good time."

(And then actually go friggin' do them.)
For me personally, that is a fairly decent summary. There's a reason for the distinct trend over recent updates of me doing pure character interaction updates and @eaglejarl doing the "Gōketsu very very incrementally take over the world" side of things (and I still have no idea how he does it).

I do want to mention that the kaiju stuff isn't entirely a sanity-preserving technique. For example, Orochimaru was always going to come back, based on his abilities, intentions, and the events of (and surrounding) the BotG. After that it was just a matter of figuring out the timing. Conversely, there are such interesting things that haven't happened because you have a diplomat-spec moderate ruling (or co-ruling?) the Water Country. I invite you to consider what present geopolitics might have been like with Yagura at the steering wheel.

Overall concerns or wishes:

1) We're ded, jim! Because we decided to get ourselves killed doing dangerous mission.
2) This is a cool! We're doing cool and interesting things related to uplift.
3) EEEEEEEEFFFFFFFFF! Atrocious pacing.

Right now, I think pacing is atrocious, and I have no wish to touch missions of assassination with a ten foot pole. It's an amoral power grab that required someone to DIE just because they have a scroll. Plus, this is very dangerous that has a significant chance of our favorite characters dying.

I think skyslider is cool and interesting thing, and I wish we could focus on that, although I am aware of the engineering challenge that makes it difficult for us to complete within the allotted time period. I am willing to focus more on SEALING and other projects, though.

I see. I shall endeavor to outline some creative fun stuff to do that hits the mark.

Related, I don't think it would really hurt to propose some stuff you'd enjoy that would be quite difficult for us to do or drop the occasional "Hmm. I'd quite enjoy writing that scene.." as spoons allow, and might lead to some improvement.

I'm pretty sure having Yagura at BotG would result in less casualties on our side. Ami, though, would be toast
I imagine the least-different hypothetical timeline being discussed here is "the EN Alliance defeats Akatsuki before they manage to extract Three-Tails, and Yagura proceeds to take the hat from Ren", not "the USotUD goes differently, allowing Yagura to remain active all the way until BotG". And I doubt Ami would've been toast, either, she was active under Yagura for more than a decade.

Meanwhile, in a different universe not so far away...

"Uncle Iroh, how do I deal with Ami?"

"The answer is simple."

"...well?"

"Shoot her with lightning, of course!"

"What!? Uncle, why would I do that?"

"Hazou, that girl is fucking crazy."

I doubt we'd go with Fire; both Water and Earth seem more powerful and versatile.

Sufficient skill and creativity and you become a complete nightmare to deal with no matter which kind of Whatever-mancer you are.

(You might have to have a bit more style if you're working with "Absolute control over string." or something, though. ;))

*vibrates in desire to go chakra golem hunting*

I know it's just recursive head-fanon but I love the idea of chakra metal coming from the core of chakra metal beasts colloquially known as golems. Even more so because we have a heckin iron mine we still havent explored aaaaaAa
