What would you want to do instead?

I'm not actually sure. I'd be pretty happy with just "sit in our base and train" for a while, but that's not realistic.

I should note that this arc was actually very good for us as a quest, since it really got us out of a bit of a stuck attitude, but I think we're (or at least I am) ready to be done with "elders out diplo us and then we play directly into their hands and don't actually get any further for any of our goals." This

What we are seeing isn't actually inconsistent with a unified aproach.

If they are unified against us, then they would want to present a facade of scheming against each other to make us waste time trying to exploit a non-existent division between them.

Yoshida could have told Takahashi to compete for the position of our handlers to add credibility to the illusion of dissention in their ranks.

It is very difficult to prove such a conspiracy isn't happening, true. If it is real though, I would think it would be in our best interests to rock the boat as much as possible to disrupt any carefully laid plots. By keeping them on the back foot we could advance our own agenda while curtailing their's; after all if a conspiracy exists with so many members, coordination would be severely limited. As long as we move fast enough that they shouldn't be able to keep up so we would have a huge advantage. We would have to make it painfully obvious that working with us (rather than using us) would be in their best interests to win over supporters to our side.

This is the attitude we started out in this village with, and it did not turn out well.

If we wanted to discredit the Kannagi, we could try convincing Yuno that going to get the scroll is a really good idea that she had for herself all on her own without any hinting from us.

In a parallel MfD universe...

"Ah yes, we have a tradition back in our village. As a show of devotion, the bride would procure the most valuable thing she could find and gift it to her beloved. The more devoted a bride was, the greater the gift she would try to find. Oh, did Kouki not tell you? Bless his heart, he must be trying so hard to keep you happy."

Thinking of this when we still have the opportunity is where we need to get to to truly be successful at this quest.

For the analyses below, I'm assuming that while Kannagi sent Yuno to be a tour guide, the whole proposal thing is something that just happened and he is capitalizing on it. He did not plan for only Noburi to go with her, nor for him to actually propose to her. In terms of an assimilation plan, though, it's just not that great. In particular, in the short term at most Noburi forms a tie to Yuno, not the village. And Yuno's ties to the village don't seem to be as strong as her tie to Noburi. So it's really a better way to lose a granddaughter than gain a grandson.

Ideas I've had for what Takahashi's plans are:
  • What he told us:
    • He's training Keiko so that she can get the scroll and remove its influence from the village. In the meantime, he needs the council to believe that we are being handled, When Kannagi came to Takahashi, he gave him a plan that Kannagi would believe would bind the team to him, but that actually wouldn't work particularly well. He then invites Mari to the meeting to make sure she knows not to trust Kannagi.
    • Under this theory, all we need to do is wait for the training and then do whatever we're supposed to to get the scroll. But there's no way we can rely on it being true.
  • The assimilation plot as outlined by Kannagi:
    • They are actually hoping to assimilate us into the village. Maybe letting Mari into the council meeting was an attempt to push us a little further down the path of feeling like we're being outmaneuvered so that we'll give up on playing politics and just do what we're told like good little ninja. I don't actually put a whole lot of faith in that, since that would be an enormous miscalculation on their part, as given by the hivemind response. Maybe it's to give us an enemy that's not Takahashi to be mad at and he wasn't expecting us to link him in to it. Maybe Takahashi agrees on assimilation but Kannagi is executing very poorly.
    • As has been mentioned in the thread already, this is actually not a bad deal for the characters. I mean, sure, if I was aiming for it, I'd try to negotiate for the team to be a clan and to get a council seat and to get the summoning scroll, but it takes them from the day-to-day existence of missing-nin into gaining an actual home. Which is one of the reasons I'm so bemused by the calls to burn everything if this is their plan. But it has nothing to do with the quest I want to play, so, per @Radvic, I'm prepared to sacrifice the team's happiness for my own twisted enjoyment.
    • In terms of not being assimilated, as I mentioned, the plan to assimilate Noburi probably isn't very effective. Just letting him know that the whole dating thing is part of an assimilation plot, plus playing up the crazy axe-murderer shtick, should be enough to get him to leave without Yuno if that's what people want. (I'd be fine with offering for her to come with us if Noburi wants, but I'm not pushing for it.) For Keiko, he's had an opportunity to execute a better assimilation plot. Assuming the voting doesn't change, then this upcoming update we should learn whether he's tried and, if so, how far he's gotten, which will determine what we need to do to get her out of it.
  • Takahashi is making his own play for the Summon Scroll:
    • He wants the scroll either for himself or someone in his family. For whatever reason, he can't or won't just go through the standard process. Keiko's training may or may not be genuine. She's not great at social skills, but she's not stupid, and if what he's teaching her has no possible utility or starts falling apart under internal inconsistencies, he's hosed. How he gets the scroll after training (or "training") her depends on how trying to get the scroll by normal channels works. Maybe he needs Keiko to make the attempt and fail before he can make his own attempt. Maybe when she tries for the scroll, and everyone's watching us like hawks waiting for us to make one false step, he swoops in and yoinks the scroll himself. On the council meeting, he's playing Kannagi to reveal himself as our enemy so we focus on him for the next month or so.
    • Whatever Takahashi's plans for the scroll, this is probably our best bet to learn about the scroll and its defenses before trying to steal it, if there's no way for us to gain it legitimately. Once Keiko is closer to done with her training (or "training"), we would need to learn as much as we can about what will be required of her from people who are not Takahashi. This goes to both discovering if it was training or "training", and also gives us the best shot of preventing whatever he tries to do to get the scroll for himself.

Funny thought: What if this is all one of Jiraiya's tests just to see how we react to political bullshit and betrayal and related nightmares.

In order to train, we need XP.

To get XP, we need danger.

However, diplomatic sparring also counts as viable source of XP since the consequences could be disastrous. While we have been here (as in, when we first encountered Hidden Mountain ninja), we have gained 22+25+31+30+21+15+15+25+22+20 over the course of 10 updates, for a total of 226 XP and an average of 22.6 XP per update so far.

When we were leaving the Liberator village, we encountered a "roll well or die" situation which we barely managed to survive and subsequently got 61 XP. When we were in the samurai town we received (from ch. 24 to 28) 5+20+8+20+61 XP, for a total of 114 and an average of 22.8 XP per update with the caveat that we were lucky we didn't die for the last one. So, if we remove ch. 28 from the equation, we get an average of 13.25 XP per update. Remember we strongly suspected that the Liberator village was a proxy of Orochimaru, Mr. Collect-all-the-Kekkei-Genkai.

In terms of XP yields, Hidden Mountain has been very consistent, profitable, and relatively safe. Furthermore, if things do go tits up we can level the place with explosive seals for maximum XP gains and not suffer any repercussions from the world at large because this village does not exist on any maps.

If we got back to beating the elders at diplomacy, would you be more interested in staying in the village? I agree that playing passively and letting the elders do as they like gets old, but rather than quit I want to win and reap the rewards.

...

Hell, any way we can make her disgrace herself could be grounds for calling off the engagement. Maybe we should have Hazou tell her that Minori has her eye on Noburi so that Yuno tries to murder her. If Yuno succeeds and isn't caught, great! Takahashi has been dealt a blow for his hubris. If she gets caught, Noburi doesn't have to marry her.

Best of all is that we can play it off as Yuno being zealously jealous, aka par for the course for canon!Yuno.

Another thing to consider is that after multiple attempts of training another summoner all who have tried have failed. The village has run out of ideas to truly use the summoning scroll as a contract and have reverted to reverse engineering seals from the scroll. Such a process may have irrevocably compromised the seal beyond what the village is capable of fixing. Takahashi may want to use Keiko and her outside perspective to see what went wrong with the scroll and if it can be fixed for the village. Or he may just wants to use Keiko as a lab rat since she has no family who would be opposed to scroll testing.

If we're going to stay in Hidden Mountain we need to stop acting like a bundle of cats and proactively improve our political situation.

Our goals are:
  • Survive
  • Retain autonomy
  • Avoid notice from important villages (Mist)
  • Get the summoning scroll
  • Maintain civil relations with Hidden Mountain
Right NOW we need:
  • A way to unfuck the impending marriage debacle OR a way to ensure the marriage is to our benefit.
Things we can do to unfuck the marriage:
  • Convince Kannagi head the marriage is politically inexpedient
  • Discredit Kannagi head or Yuno
  • Get Kannagi head or Yuno killed
  • "Force" Noburi to marry someone else
  • Kill everyone
  • Run away
Things we can do to ensure the marriage is to our benefit:
  • Make sure Kannagi head is aware of what happens if they try this bullshit again
  • ???
My suggestion (read:everyone else's): Discredit Yuno (also possibly get her killed)
  • Noburi spent time with Inoue and Keiko at Takahashi's, but dropped that due to the whole marriage debacle. Let's change that.
  • We've already gotten a subtle hint dropped for Yuno about another girl ("I was thinking how glad I am you're not her.") so we can build on that.
  • Before dates with Yuno Noburi should go to Takahashi's house to "drop off" Keiko; when he returns for dates he should act glad for Yuno's presence but otherwise distracted/tense.
  • Have Hazou make somewhat disparaging remarks about Minori within earshot; basically get the message across to Yuno that Minori wants Noburi but not make it obvious otherwise.
  • It doesn't have to be Minori or even a Takahashi; we just want someone who can be usually be found in town (public place, easy access) for Yuno to assassinate.

Step 0: Run plan past Inoue.

Grabbed the two plans in the running.

[X] Action Plan: Assimilation my a-

Playing politics was fun for a while, but it's time to change the game before we lose.

We won't be subverting ninjaville any time soon, and killing everyone will make Akane sad (probably Jiraiya too, if/when he finds out) so I suggest we remember what we really came here for - the Summoning Scroll. With that said...

Goals:
  • Survive.
  • Get out and away from here, and return to our Fort.
  • Try to do it without harming random people in the village, though anyone who follows us beyond it is fair game.
  • Come back once we're stronger and the hustle dies down a bit, probably in a couple of months or so, we'll see how it goes.

Methods:
  1. Wait patiently for the meeting to conclude. Don't rock the boat. Stick to facts if questioned. Once it's over, all of us return to our camp.
  2. Once back at the camp, Mari shares what she learned earlier with us.
  3. Convince the group that it's time to leave:
    1. In private, tell Mari about our conversation with Keiko, voice concern over Keiko's attitude to both the team and life and Takahashi's influence on her.
    2. Point out to Noburi that Kannagi lied about canceling the betrothal, that 13 is too young to choose a partner for life and that there are plenty of pretty girls out there who don't act like they might murder people for disagreeing with them.
    3. Remind everyone of the times we were attacked, of people spreading vile rumours about us, that our so-called allies make us sit on seals, lie to us and seek to use us, instead of trying to make mutually beneficient arrangements. That elders make plans to keep us here by any means, and are prepared to kill us to prevent our leaving.
    4. For Keiko: getting out now and stealing the scroll later is absolutely in line with Takahashi's plan. After all, he claims that he wants the scroll out of the village. Well, we can do that. On our terms. As for summoning, we will find her a better teacher than a guy who can't even use it himself. Maybe trade favors with Jiraiya. If she even needs a special teacher for that and Takahashi wasn't messing with her, and the rest of us.
      1. Does she really believe we're safer here, relying on these people, than when we were on our own? That they have our best interests in mind? What does her bloodline tell her?
    5. Kagome should be fine with leaving the stinkers and going back to properly defended place.
    6. Akane's dreams are bigger than this trap. She deserves better.
    7. We all deserve better than being stuck in this mud hole at the mercy of elders, and that's where things seem to be heading.
  4. Have Kagome gather seals that can be recovered without compromising the perimeter, rig the rest to self-destruct once we leave (the goal is to deny knowledge rather than kill/destroy, arrange self-destruction accordingly)
  5. Pack up whatever's left and leave.
    1. Leave a note for the villagers in a visible place where they are sure to find it
      1. Inform the villagers that sudden responsibilities have surfaced and we need to take care of them immediately
      2. We will be back once the problem is solved and we apologize for the undue worry they must feel for our safety
      3. Please tell Yuno not to worry needlessly, her fiance will return safe and sound at the earliest opportunity (This will hopefully lower the chance of sudden axe-murdering taking place in the village)
    2. Be on the lookout (for Seals, traps, hidden guards, whatever)
    3. Sneak out (stealth? genjutsu? maybe Noburi has some airborne sleeping powder or something for the situation?) just run if detected, (set off a smoke bomb to conceal our exit?) disable immediate threats non-lethally.
      1. We're leaving immediately, but not in a violent manner. Don't let villagers stop us, but keep violence to minimum. We mean no harm. We're just in a real hurry. See you later.
  • E&E time: employ anti-tracking maneuvers. Tree-hopping, kawarimi, water-walking, clone tricks...
    1. Head west towards the coast and acquire (steal) a boat
    2. Make a short sea trip to cut our trail and then head back to the fort.
  • Return to our Fort.
    1. Plan ends here, further actions to be specified once we arrive.
Contingencies:
  1. On the run we stick together, at least till we reach the relative safety of our fort. (yes, that means potty-break buddies till we make it. Get over it)
  2. If village ninja do come after us, withhold nothing at any point once combat begins. We'll be fighting for our lives. Always use lethal methods. Take no prisoners.

[X] Action Plan: Poor Communication Kills

This entire plan should take no more than a few hours immediately after the meeting. Once the conversations are done, the update should end, and allow us to vote on further action.

Conversation 1: Inoue's Information
  • Before the debrief: Everyone makes sure the only people around are Inoue, Keiko, Noburi, Kagome, Akane, and Us. Minimize chance of external eavesdropping as best each of us can.
  • Let Inoue debrief us off screen unless she has something new to add.
  • We want to see how everyone reacts.
  • We react to the news of Kannagi's betrayal by dispelling, then we react as the thread approximately has.
  • Mention possible options of "Burn it all", "Run away quickly", and "Roll with it until we have the scroll, then one of the first two".
  • Ask everyone what they think about those options, both how amenable they are to them, and concerns with them.

Conversation 2: Keiko Concerns
  • Talk to Inoue privately about Keiko's mental state.
  • Mention what she said to us, and our concerns about:
    • Takahashi worsening her depression.
    • Takahashi suborning her loyalty.
    • That we fear her crush on Inoue might now be her strongest tie to the team.
  • Ask Inoue what we could do about this. Mention following options and ask for her opinion on them:
    • <Looking for contributions on specific remedies for Keiko's mental state>
    • We could run, steal the scroll, and get Jiraya to teach Keiko the neccesary information.
    • Spend more time with the party. A N-days-on N-days-off schedule with Takahasi.
    • Find some way to give her active leadership again, some task which forces her to worry about our well-being.
    • Bad Option: genjitsu mind-fuckery
    • Bad Option: play into the crush to tie her deeper to our group
Conversation 3: Kagome's Catastrophes
  • Talk to Inoue and Kagome, again privately.
  • Ask both of them about their estimate of our tactical and strategic combat position.
  • How capable are we of destroying this place? How much time would it take for Kagome to deploy explosive seals all over town, enough to obliterate everything/kill most people?
  • How capable are we of an assasination? against Takahashi? other leaders? could we make it look like an accident?
  • How effectively can we run away? Kill pursuers?
  • How much do we know about the scroll's security measures? Do they think we could steal it? destroy it?
    • Ask Kagome "Pretend you're the one designing the scroll security measures but with the tools you think village sealmasters have.
    • Would you, with your actual skillset, be able to get through that?"
Conversation 4: Needling Noburi
  • Make sure this is private, with only Nobby and Us listening.
  • Ask him how he's feeling about the Yuno betrothal stuff.
  • Ask him how he would feel about the following options:
    • Run away immediately, leaving Yuno behind.
    • Run away but take Yuno with us.
    • Letting the marriage go through and staying.
    • Finding some way to disrupt the marriage while still staying. (Politically incredibly bad).
  • If he seems amenable to advice:
    • Point out that arranged marriages do happen and if both parties are reasonable, willing to compromise, and care about each other's well-being then love will often come in the long term.
    • If those things aren't there then it's really difficult to create happiness and stability.
  • Do you know why Yuno is considered cursed? If not, what is your guess? Also, could you ask her next time you get the chance?
  • Does he think Yuno's reliable? Does he actually want to be in a relationship with her?

Conversation 5: Akane Assessment
  • Talks to Akane, again privately.
  • Mention that she shouldn't have brought Yuno into the base. What if she sneaks in at night to steal/stab Noburi?
  • Try to be a little less trusting of people she doesn't know well or who don't have the trust of the entire team.
  • Tell her to ask herself "what would Hazou do?" when dealing with non-group members. This won't always be the right option, but it should always be an option she considers carefully.
  • Be kind and understanding as we talk with Akane.
  • Give her a hug if she wants. Tell her that we understand how hard this is for her.

The update needs to end no later than 8 in-game hours after Inoue gets back, allowing us to vote again. We should also schedule this update so we have some time to talk to Keiko/others immediately afterwards (Immediately afterwards in game time, two updates from now in external time). Feel free to not go through all the conversations as long as they go in order and the update ends as early as possible in-game.

You can ping me if there's a new edit.

[X] Action Plan: Poor Communication Kills

The only thing I don't like about this is the fact that we're having a "maybe we should just level this whole place" discussion when I'm pretty sure we're currently inside Takahashi's house. Also, I seriously oppose having that conversation at all. Kagome is probably the only person in the party who might be okay with the butchery of over one hundred people, and it will probably be extremely alarming to everyone else. For me, the only two basic options are to either stay here in hopes of getting that summon scroll, or just leaving. Murdering them all would probably kill one or more of us, and it's also pretty psychotically evil.

Omake: Hi, I'm Walter
There must be a reason why no one in the village is a summoner; we need to find out what it is before attempting to summon something.
  1. (If I had to guess, it would have something to do with all of the village's purification rituals and other taboos.)

Mini-Omake : Lye + Fat = Soap

Keiko was apprehensive as she approached the podium. Everything she had done for the past 3 months has been leading her towards this, to her attempt at the summoning ceremony. Each of the last 15 attempts to gain a summoning contract had failed, and that fact sat heavily in her mind.

As Keiko approached the dias with the scroll she steeled herself against the inevitable disappointment of both her sensei. Carefully, Keiko pulled out a kunai and cut a precise pattern into her own thumb. Silence reigned in the room as everyone watched with bated breath. Her teacher, her love, and her teammates all wanted her---expected her---to succeed. Keiko knew she wouldn't. She knew that nothing she did could change that.

However, she also knew that she must perform the ritual correctly. Any mistakes simply meant that she would have to try again, and that would make the inevitable disappointment of her friends deeper and harsher. So, to spare them that pain, Keiko focused.

Keiko channeled chakra into the wound she just made, the actions made rote through practice even as blood obscured her movements. As the seal took hold it changed the blood flowing out of her thumb into something more. The flow became a trickle and the blood glowed blue as it became both signal and conduit.

A wave passed through her audience, a wave of held breaths being released and subtle gasps of amazement. Keiko suppressed her sigh and signed the slot allotted her on the scroll.

As she pulled her finger away, a powerful boom rocked the room. The dias was caught in a maelstrom that pushed Keiko back despite the chakra she was using to hold herself down. It looked like a hurricane compressed into a sphere complete with arcs of lightning and momentary glimpses into a calm center.

All stood silent as the storm dissipated to reveal a small animal. It stood on its hind legs, with its hands held as if it was begging for something. Scales ran along its back like natural armor and its tail gleamed, looking as if it could cut steel.

It took a moment to glance at its surroundings before standing up a little straighter and saying "Right, what's all this then?"

"I, uhh, summoned you." stammered out a shocked Keiko, her mind still caught between incredulity and surprise.

"Yeah little miss perceptive, that much was bloody obvious. Why did you summon me?" said the animal while staring directly at Keiko.

"I wanted to sign the summoning contract for, umm, your species." said Keiko, feeling like the little creature was dissecting her with its beady eyes.

"Pangolin. We're Pangolin. Good lord, has everyone forgotten about us since our non-sophont cousins went extinct? Anyway, I'm Walter. I'm the primary intake coordinator for the summoning branch of our government.", he said, preening for a moment before seeming to decide that he should act more professionally.

As Walter looked around the room, he said, "There's a standard interview process and a goodly bit of paperwork, but since you already have the blood signature thing sorted that should be much easier. Before we get going, do you have any questions? Any of you?",

While Keiko was stuck attempting to process all of this, Takahashi took the opportunity to ask "Why now? Why have you finally responded to the summoning ceremony?"

"Huh, that was you? We usually take a bit of a sniff before popping over to this dimension. Our sense of smell is better than our vision, after all. The last 15 times the machine went 'bing' everything smelled like lye mixed with tapir fat. We assumed it was the damnable lions messing with the dimensional transport system and decided that discretion was the better part of valour."

@eaglejarl, @Velorien, @Jackercracks: I figure you've probably already decided on the canonical type of the summon animal, but I just want to give you a nudge toward pangolin. They're mammals, super adorable, covered in armor, and curl up into little balls as a defense. With some jutsu they could be an awesome fighting force, especially for guerrilla operations and sneaking around.

Killing the former owners of a normal contract does not make you the new owner of that contract;

You know, a modern-ish world where "Killing the owner of a contract makes you the new owner of that contract" was written into physics would be a very fun setting for another rational quest.

I had, though, forgotten one more thing I want to learn. @Jello_Raptor, I'd be interested in a line in Poor Communication Kills about Mari asking Keiko if she's been using her bloodline during the training and, if she has, ask her to spend some time with Mari going through whatever exercises her clan has to check that they are not overusing it.

I'd like to have some sort of a line in the sand where if Takahashi has been pressuring her to use her bloodline, then I'd vote either to leave or to take a break on the apprenticeship for a while, but honestly he's good enough at what he does that he wouldn't do anything oppressive like that. He'd lead her into wanting to use her bloodline instead. But at the least it would inform the next vote.

I added a note to Conversation 2, but that's just discussing things. I figure we can use the next update to act if there's an actual issue. This includes asking Inoue to do something.

  • Does Inoue know whether Keiko has been using her bloodline during Takahashi's training?
    • We're worried it might be harming her and changing her mindset for the worse.

I want to make sure that if we run, we take the entire team with us. That means knowing how they feel about things and gathering more information on their mental state.

We have very little to lose by doing this and the information we gain can allow us to keep the team together no matter what option we choose next.

Edit 1: Changed "Proto-Plan" to "Plan". Added an explicit call for people's opinions in Conversation 1. Added note to leave some time to talk to Keiko/others. Added some explanation/justifications to the rear end of the plan.

Edit 2: Voted for own plan ...

Edit 3: Added some options for helping Keiko to Conversation 3

Edit 4: Added note to ask Nobby about Yuno's cursed status. Added Conversation 5.

Edit 5: Grammar and spelling. Added Akane Hug.

Edit 6: Changed "Scene" to "Conversation" so that the plan is a little less prescriptive to the QMs. Added "Run and get jiraya to tech keiko" to possible options to discuss with INoue. Added questions about stealing the scroll.

Edit 7: Added note that QMs don't have to write all the conversations as long as they short circuit correspondingly early. Re-ordered the conversations in the order I want to have them.

Edit 8: Added note asking Inoue about whether Keiko has been overusing her bloodline during training.

Based on a little Googling I would agree that they adorable. I'm afraid, however, that the summon animal was chosen even before the first chapter was written.

We're in the council meeting room, which is presumably in neutral territory (also Takahashi pointed out the plan was to have Inoue go to Takahashi's house to fetch her team).

As of the end of 'Judgement Day' you are in Takahashi's house and Inoue is in the council chamber. Shortly Takahashi and Inoue will come back to the house and then your whole team will be brought back to the council chamber for Gasai's trial.

See here:

"Indeed," Takahashi nodded. "Tomorrow morning, I will invite your entire group to spend the day as guests of the Takahashi, thus ensuring that you are unable to spy on the Council of Elders. In the evening, I will leave this place with Shiina to attend the meeting. During the recess after the first part, Shiina will return home, citing tiredness, and Minori will then escort your team, yourself included, to the village hall in order to take part in Gasai's trial. Is this arrangement acceptable to you?"
