I dont think I have any major additions.

[X] Action plan: Operation Murder

I DO see two probable sequences of events resulting from the current chapter:

1) We get shipped back to Leaf ASAP while the adults handle things.

2a) This is a Defcon 1 , all hands on deck type situation, and we are going to be recruited into the Akatsuki hunting squad along with a ragtag bunch of Chunin candidates present and any other Leaf/Mist/San/Allied forces present. Presumably they have a pile of Chunin/Jounin mooks we would fight while the big whigs duke it out.

2b) We don't have to go, but Noburi does, in which case we go back him up if allowed/not a liability. No Broburi left behind.

Thoughts?

Oh yeah, @Oneiros forgot to say this but some of the concerns I pointed out previously still stand. Might I suggest making the changes as I suggest below? It's only +10 words.
Word count: 240
[X] Action plan: Operation Murder
  • Game night is over, obviously. Make sure the other Genin dont get in the S-rankers and Jounins way
    • Try to find an ANBU agent to escort the Genin to their barracks
    • Locate Ikeda and let her know we want to keep in touch
  • Tell Jiraiya when he has a moment that we had an idea that might be helpful.
  • In high-OPSEC privacy pitch the following idea
    • Keiko mentioned that the polemarch hinted that he could forcibly bring her to the seventh path.
    • If this is true we could force the crows to reverse summon Itachi
      • We know that he doesn't have a good relationship with them.
      • Itachi apparently fought the clan solo, but it's probably a good idea to bring backup.
      • We don't know many summoners, but this may be worth contacting Tsunade and Orochimaru.
        • Bring up Orochimaru gently.
        • We can already guess that you're in touch with him, after that board game he sent.
        • But if you're not we could send a message through the pangolins
      • Keiko might be able to help if Jiraiya thinks it a good idea
    • Hazō of course is ready to scribe any seals the strike force might need
    • Also might work on Kisame's Sharks.
  • Go home and get packed, there's a likelihood you'll be leaving Mist very soon.

If it is necessary after the civilian showed up, get Ami's attention surreptitiously in the chaos surrounding the announcement. Using the code you established, use handsigns (use mist handsign language in the code) for "favor", "stop", "intruder".
What is this favor being used for, again? I dont understand which intruder is being stopped, nor do I see the value of using the favor for this.

Um...I don't think Ami has the ability to stop Zabuza. Given that her entire thing is protecting Keiko, and that Zabuza's actions would likely result in Keiko being put in great danger, Ami would have tried to stop Zabuza before his reveal. Which she did not succeed in doing, from my perspective. And if Ami did, she has great incentive to do so and we don't need to burn a favor on something she's greatly incentivized to do anwyay.

I don't know that there's any way to actually stop Zabuza, or at least all the ideas I came up with are essentially shots in the dark with a serious possibility of making things worse.

The only viable method that covers the long-term is to actually convince him he shouldn't go through with his reveal, which is bound to be very difficult from what we know of him. And that's assuming he's actually acting of his own volition, which I'm not convinced of.

So am I the only one who thinks that Zabuza was going to publicly blame Akatsuki for the whole thing?
I've had thoughts along those lines too, but it's a risky proposition. You can't exactly fish for that intel without letting the cat out of the bag, and if you let Zabuza speak his peace then you don't know he won't implicate you.

It would make sense, to a degree, given that Zabuza is very dutiful to Mist (and thus unlikely to casually disregard secrecy of information) and we know he can put on a show if he wants to, but for all we know he is really really angry at Leaf and isn't gonna let us ally Mist if he can help it.

Oh, I'm not saying we should act with that supposition in mind, I'm just thinking that's where he's going with this.

I'm not sure why he'd be angry at Leaf for being prepared for the "surprise" attack Mist had.

...

...

The entire premise of the trap was Jiraiya and Leaf acting on info we got from the Pangolins, setting a trap for Mist, right? A party which they were pretty sure Yagura was going to show up to...?

Oh, absolutely. But there's two sides to that. Yes, Leaf set a trap for them by sending their Jinchuuriki out the front gate of Konoha. On the other hand... Mist didn't have to try to kill him. That kind of trap only works against bad actors. It's hard to sympathize when the context of a trap is "here's a person you can kill" and the other guy goes "oh boy I wanna kill him! let me go kill him!" and then gets upset when it turns out that they were prepared for you trying to kill him.

I'm not sure why he'd be angry at Leaf for being prepared for the "surprise" attack Mist had.
I mean, there is this little thing about Leaf killing a bunch of his friends and comrades. Even if it was a fair move from the perspective of the tactics sims, having a large number of your friends die is probably going to make you upset.

Sure. But the decision to engage upon a presumed-helpless target was made by Mist.

And the topic here is why Zabuza would be angry that a bunch of his friends died, not whether it's a fair tactical move. I'm saying you don't brush off your comrades dying just because the enemy wasn't cheating or breaking ethical rules when they killed them.
