While i concur with your sentiment, i would like to note that this was not a "personal experience".
This was an uplift operation again a Jounin/Possible S-Ranker.
It was not a "personal experience" that Hazou tried to find individuality, it was a "All hands on deck operation" that Hazou implemented on his own and could have been damaging for everyone.

Framing it as a "Well, Hazou need his agency" is at best only technically correct, especially when the other part of the operation is Keiko sister, someone that could have used the situation as a stress point to damage the team...something that actually happened.
At least asking for Rule Of Engagement to Keiko was, while not necessary, something polite to do.

And let's be real:
From an internal perspective,We know why Hazou hid the meeting, and sure as hell was not "Let's take a personal day to follow my heart".

If Noburi decided to fight Zabusa 1vs1 and decided to tell us nothing because he know better, everyone would have kicked his ass all the way to Konoha and back, just because we did it socially doesn't change the situation.

I mean, we explicitly cleared it with the J man beforehand, so it doesn't quite map onto that scenario.

I believe that was mostly resolved by

KAGOME: HEY DO YOU THINK I'M STUPID AND THAT MY OPINION DOESN'T MATTER?

HAZOU: What!? No!!! Of course I don't, I care about you!! I'm so sorry!

KAGOME: OKAY JUST CHECKING

VOICE'S IN HAZOU'S HEAD: praise Jashin for Kagome's straightforwardness

Kagome: "I kill your mother! Boom squish!"

Hazou: "Ok, sorry Kagome"

J is command structure, we needed his approval....it also implies that Keiko and Noburi can't offer anything of value, while J can, so....this objection has gains and losses in it.
But yeah, i see your point.
This said the Zabusa scenario is not completely correct,i admit it.

The problem is that when the topic of ninja interpersonal relations is broached, our sparing human intellects instantly assume the most ingratiating posture of surrender imaginable.

We should come up with some way to model and keep track of all of these so that we can make better decisions. Perhaps if we fuse the EUIV/CKII relations systems with troll/leprechaun romance...

So I'm thinking about restarting the summoning scroll conspiracy. If anyone is interested please let me know

@QMs, out of curiousity, what was the game-design reasoning behind making initiative order simply the order of Alertness, rather than making Alertness checks (with the potential for dice and Aspects to change things)?

Since it looks like @Inferno Vulpix' plan isn't going to be easy to trim down to 300 words, I guess we can either just cut some sections, or eat the XP loss and put in a more verbose version of the Noburi conversation. I kinda want the latter, since he deserves it, and our inquiry into his family situation keeps getting delayed. Thoughts?

Reminder that we are merely sacrificing bonus XP in the interests of clarity and general "Get this shit done with for fucks sake" celerity.

I am fine with ditching the bonus XP as long as the situation calls for it. Doubly so if it wraps up this entire Mist arc in a timely manner while accomplishing what we need to accomplish.

To clarify, Pandaa is about to leave. Strictly speaking he's already left as of the end of the update, but I'm prepared to stretch the timeline for a brief expansion of the message.

Mainly the fact that initiative checks happen before your character reacts. Thus you're not allowed to try to modify initiative in any way (with a few special-case exceptions), including spending FP on it. I forget why it's not a roll, but I suspect the desire for a rare moment of rules simplicity was a factor.

I decided to lean into the extra hundred words and expand the Noburi section, and also modified the Pandaa message to account for us only adding to the message that's already there.
Reposting the plan once again, if anyone has anything to say about it let me know.

  • Add to Pandaa's message that there will probably be more Ami developments and we don't want to leave Keiko's feelings and input out when they happen.
  • Talk to Noburi:
    • Get his full opinion on Keiko, Shikamaru, Ami, all of it.
    • We messed up not keeping you or Keiko in the loop, and we're sorry.
    • There was a reason that we haven't mentioned: we hoped there was a chance Ami and Keiko could reconcile.
      • Maybe Ami was trying to keep Keiko safe from the Mori. It's plausible, if Ami was worried that they'd get to Keiko.
      • We didn't want to give her false hope, though, and that's part of why we didn't want to tell her about Ami beforehand.
    • We also didn't want to make Noburi keep a secret from Keiko too.
    • Ask about his family. He seemed upset his sisters didn't talk to him after his match.
      • Does he want to go talk to them? We've got your back, if you want to.
    • Ask about how he thinks we can help Keiko when she comes back.
  • Avoid Shikamaru, it'll be better to be calm when we confront him and he probably has enough on his plate already.
  • (Once the second Ami letter arrives)
  • Grab Noburi and show the letter to Jiraiya. Help him find a clean shirt. In the process, quickly confirm conclusions:
    • Letter #1 was deliberately leaked through a compromised courier, implying courier #2 wasn't compromised.
    • Letter #2 leaves us the choice to go along with the marriage or not.
    • Letter #1 was pretty aggressive: likely signals that she prefers the former option.
    • If we run out of time, cover these later.
  • Do something calming and rote to relax a little, like making explosives.
  • Once Jiraiya returns, discuss the situation (include Noburi):
    • How long before we leave Mist?
    • Second meeting with Ami. Should it happen? If so:
      • Should we seek a honest answer regarding whether she's in danger/wants a political marriage?
      • Would require better OPSEC. A walk across the bay, then a picnic?
      • We're a bit shaken from recent events. Any advice?
    • If Jiraiya approves, send a letter. Contents:
      • Decline the favour.
      • Set up the second meeting.
        • Place: "near" a random restaurant.
        • Time: tomorrow? (Jiraiya's call.)
  • Clear this section with Jiraiya:
    • Watch today's matches.
    • If anyone talks about Hazou and Ami: no comment.

I think I already have a vote for this but just in case.

I'm extremely grateful for the hard work you put into this over the past weeks. You da bomb!

  • Apologize for doing it at all, it was a mistake
  • Apologize for not asking for your help beforehand.
  • Apologize for not acquiring permission beforehand.
  • Apologize for how me doing thing makes you feel.
  • Apologize for me not keeping you in

[Y] Just Get it Over With
  • Make a list of everyone we've met
  • Apologize personally to each of them for everything we've ever done and everything we ever will do
  • Do the same for everyone new we meet from this point forward
  • Never apologize for anything else ever again

Allright, in the interest of representing the "Hazou needs a spine" sentiment, I'm going to offer a slight alternative. @Inferno Vulpix feel free to steal whatever you want. Sorry for hijacking your cursed plan, but I'd rather do this than pester you about edits.

    • He deserves a proper explanation of the Ami situation.
    • There was a reason that we haven't mentioned: we hoped there was a chance Ami and Keiko could reconcile.
      • Explain our suspicions about Ami's behaviour and the possible reasons for it.
        • Mari didn't believe Ami would betray Keiko. Neither did Keiko herself. That counts for something.
        • Ami went out of her way to intercept Keiko before she could interact with the Mori in any way.
        • If Ami is so smart and competent, then wouldn't this result - of Keiko staying away from the Mori - be what she intended?
      • We didn't want to give Keiko false hope, and that's part of why we didn't want to tell her about the meeting beforehand.
    • We also didn't want to make Noburi keep a secret from Keiko too.
    • We should've told Keiko immediately after returning, didn't expect the marriage letter.
    • Hazou is sorry for how things turned out. Does Noburi think he was wrong to even try?
    • Ask about how he thinks we can help Keiko when she comes back.
    • On the topic of estranged family...
      • (Be gentle about this, don't push. It must be a very touchy topic for Noburi.)
      • He seemed upset his sisters didn't talk to him after his match.
      • Does he want to go talk to them? We've got his back, if he wants to.

    • Letter #1 was pretty aggressive: likely signals that she prefers the former option.
    • If we run out of time, cover these later.

Whats the tangible difference here on the spine-front besides being a little more assertive in the Noburi conversation?

I don't know how I can make it more assertive without Hazou coming off as a douche. I was trying to change the tone of that conversation from apologetic to explanatory, with an undercurrent that Hazou doesn't accept a priori that he was wrong to do what he did.

And, well, that plan name just sounds cool. I wonder if there's a metal band out there named that way....
