So now that we've had sealing style and variations mentioned can we get more info on whether its possible to fake a different style or obscure a seal so that it looks like someone else using a similar style? And if so what are the mechanics for detection and creation?

This was mostly answered back here, but we'll have to get back to you on the mechanics. What are you looking to accomplish with this? If we know that we can make sure the mechanics support it.

I could swear this one got answered already?

Ah, sorry I hadn't realized. I was thinking of what we could do at higher sealing levels. Like selling storage scrolls or arming one side of a conflict. And attempting to hide our involvement. Even if we don't want to hide our involvement we may want to make it appear as though a group of people are producing the seals.

  • Some of them would be appreciative if we rebuilt the road in an attempt to help their village and Tonaki grow
  • They have some kind of contact with Tonaki

I do kinda doubt these. They put a lot of effort into erasing any trace of their existence, and they seem to be very ignorant of the world. I don't think they want to break their hidden-ness, for good reason.

I'm thinking that for the merchant empire, we should start with the two random storage seals we have, plus some of ours. The different seal types should make it easier to pretend to be different groups. Once we get started and start making money, though, we should use some of the money to buy storage seals on the open market, rather than continuing to make our own, to further muddy the waters.

If we get high enough level at sealing to become fast at reverse engineering them, of course, we can look at buying just one of each scroll design.

Yeah, I'm not super sold on those points, but I give them about 50-50 odds of being true. Here's my reasoning.

On being appreciative if we rebuilt their road: our presence should convince them that they can't hide forever, that they could grow, and that there may be hope for positive contact. Given my theory on how they were founded (that they grew for a time, then decayed), it's possible they recognize "people stopped coming around here, we stopped growing" and just don't know exactly why this is. If we rebuilt the road, then they'd have more traffic, which might give them the opportunity to expand some. I'm not so confident in this that I would suggest it in a conversation with Yoshida, but it's something I'll be reading future updates to see if it holds water.

On contact with Tonaki, this comes from a few things: the low number of civilians (I'm assuming Keiko accurately assessed the size of the village and the number of ninja), the presence of metal and seals, the drugged ninja's lack of reaction to confusion about Tonaki, and my general disbelief that a ninja village wouldn't keep an eye on the nearest civilian village. They might not have a strong presence in Tonaki, but I would have expected them to at least observe them, maybe disguise themselves and talk to them. Might be where they heard rumors about medic-nin or something.

Of course, their isolationist tendencies speak against both those parts of my theory, and not all the points add up, but I still give them ~50-50 odds of being true. It's also possible I'm wrong about Akio being the founder and they're actually descended from invading army who stole Ui's summon scroll from his dead body, in which case they likely have a fairly different stance on things :p

It seems to me that we really need to negotiate hard with Yoshida if we want to continue couch surfing in this village. Offering medical services, while undoubtedly appreciated, tends to lose its charm when the one responsible for the injury is a member of the same group as the healer. I think now is a good time to lay our cards on the table with Yoshisa so we can come to some form of agreement or arrangement.

Things we can offer them:
  • More medical aid
  • News of the outside world
  • Seals (depending on what the seals they have already do)
  • Innovation/Technological Improvements
Things we (ok, what I) want:
  • Access and/or ownership of the summoning scroll
  • Outside perspective/ancient lore
  • Minions (combat or otherwise)
  • Base of operations
Feel free to add in your own suggestions as to what you all want. For now I think we need to establish a working relationship based on simple things. We know they need a more varied diet and we have the means to transport (storage scrolls OP) any food they require. For payment we could see if they still produce any artwork or if they have some Tea Country currency. We should position ourselves as the profitable middleman so that they maintain their isolation while we still have access to them. Our first grocery shopping session should focus solely on choosing a few select food stuffs that Noburi says is what the villagers actually need and maybe some luxuries to show them what they are missing. Once we return we can mark up the prices as we see fit (money!) and then work out a new deal to bring in greater quantities (if needed).

If all of that works out (and that's a big IF), we can then move on to upgrading their village. We need to show them how we can help them whether it be through better sewage systems, better crop diversity (if they even practice agriculture; we need Keiko to analyze how the heck these people survive while keeping a whole village off the map), or industrial-lite manufacturing. Naturally, this would take months to accomplish, but having an unknown ninja village at our beck and call (or at least in our debt) seems like a good trade-off. Actually, settling down here for a bit sounds great since any hunter-nin who happen to stop by will also be accosted by the village. We would have much better odds of fighting and killing Zabuza if we have Hidden Mountain help us... not great, but certainly better.

If we blurt out "we want your most precious, sacred relic for ourselves" in front of Yoshida things will go wrong. Right now, they don't know that we know about the scroll and we need to keep it that way. Trust takes time, and we just beat the snot out of one of their citizens (bully or not) and we are on thin ice. Let's not escalate if we don't have to.

Don't forget that it's likely that no one here knows any genjutsu or ninjutsu. I don't know if we have any chakra elemental testing paper, but we could teach a few in unlocking their element and teaching them jutsu.

Possibly, but they may also be holding back on us. I'd rather err on the side of caution; we have no information regarding any villagers' proficiencies in ninjutsu or genjutsu whereas we have confirmation that they thought medical jutsu was a myth/mythological.

If they do have either ninjutsu or genjutsu they aren't revealing their options (which is a smart choice for them) or by not revealing our abilities we retain an edge in case anyone else besides the bully gets uppity.

I'd like to get all of their elements tested at a later point in time, but only after we have their allegiance.

Alright, so this is a very limited planning period. The next update will likely be restricted to this conversation, so we need to figure out a few things.

  1. How much information about the outside world we're willing to reveal, whether it's about us or the outside world. This includes our knowledge of the scroll and intention to obtain it.
  2. How much we're going to leverage Kouta's almost-murder of Akane. Noburi unfortunately downplayed Akane's injuries, so correcting this will seem like we're exaggerating her condition after the fact.
  3. What we want in the event of a trade.
  4. What we are willing to give in a trade. We have knowledge of genjutsu and ninjutsu, and that might be worth a lot. Kagome's sealing expertise would be useful to them, but they might be too proud to accept it.
  5. The general tone of this conversation.

Hmm... You know, Noburi, as a medic, is uniquely equipped to deal with death as a more... temporary condition. He's capable of transfusing chakra that integrates well with people's systems with Vampiric Dew, and once he's skilled enough in medical ninjutsu, he might be able to revive someone shortly after their heartbeat stops (3 minutes or so), more if they're put on ice, using Vampiric Dew simultaneously with his medical ninjutsu to bring them back.

Well, duh. I mean, he already knows how to do that: he's Orochimaru, after all. You're underestimating his ability.

No Kabuto managed to stick his middle finger in the whole "can't seal people" thing and carries around a squad's worth of dead people in storage for resurrection purposes.

Regarding the genjutsu thing I think we can test that fairly easily. During a spar Inoue drops an area technique that affects our observers, we count how long it takes them to Kai out. This genjutsu needs to be immediately obvious and we need to have reasonable arguments that it wasn't targeted at them.

In other news I'm against telling them the truth I expect that either what's her name will run out screaming that the others were right all along or she beats our deception and comes back tomorrow with the entire village to fight us.

I'm 90% sure his trick is just that he realized the stored seal environment can just have the same atmospheric pressure as the outside world. That way not everything you seal needs to go through explosive decompression every time you add or remove something.

...are we doing Orochimaru theories again? If so, I would like to highlight a short part from the last update:

Keiko stepped forward to stand at Hazou's side, her face utterly blank and her eyes cold as a snake's.

Sussspiciousss?

I think the major point here is if we want to reveal that we want the scroll to Yoshida.

If we tell her we want it:
  • It opens up the option to bargain for it
  • Risks her freaking out now
  • We demonstrate good faith
If we don't tell her we want it:
  • We can't really bargain for it now
  • We need to come up with a solid excuse why we want to stay here and what we want in exchange for our services
  • We will get caught in the lie if we want to bargain for the scroll later
If we go with the latter, our best option is to just play for time and wait until we have the chance to steal the scroll. I don't really like the idea of stealing the scroll because then we miss on all the potential information they have about the scroll and the summons. Besides it would be nice to have a place in the world where everyone doesn't hate us.

Besides, we have Yoshida alone on our turf for now. If we want to bring her in and see how she reacts, this is the best chance we are going to get. It will far harder to gleam information about her or anyone else we are negotiating with in a more official setting with multiple people on the other side.
