Idea for a new Seal:
An explosive tag that will not detonate within 5 feet of Kurosawa Hazou, Mori Keiko, Wakahisa Noburi, Ishihara Akane, Mari or Kagome. That way we can throw them around at will without worrying. Also would be nice if we could add that adaptation to explosive mines.
"Well, Tatoe Rei, you really proved your loyalty in that battle just now. Welcome to the group. Come back to camp with us, and we'll introduce you to our remaining party members."

(...)

"Here we are. Right this wa - oh. Oops."

"Hazou, kindly explain whose severed leg just landed in my lap."

"Uh... it was nothing, Inoue-sensei. Please go back to your dinner."

OK maybe worry a little. But we can cross that bridge when if we get any new members.

Why would Jiraiya ever figure out that it was our team that killed the leaf ninjas? I would be very surprised if he kept in close enough contact with Konoha to be immediately appraised of all fatalities. The death of a few random low ranking ninjas that were traveling on the outskirts of Fire country is an incredibly minor issue and would almost certainly not be brought to the attention of a Jiraiya given his distance from the village and important position.

@Ct613hulu You're not being paranoid. STOP IT

But seriously, Jiraiya is actually well-informed since he knew who Akane is even though she's absolutely shit in terms of the "shit that happened" list. His "denial" back when they met was such a huge pile of bullshit even Kagome could have seen it if he was there. He's going to find out, realize we left at around the same time, and put things together. It's literally his job.

It's not really a problem if Jiraya figures out we killed some Leaf ninja. We might even mention it ourselves when we report on the new wtf-jutsu going on in Rain.

He doesn't really expect us to put the lives of some random Leaf mooks before ourselves. Otherwise he would have no missing-nin to work with at all.

We went over to Fire because we running away from some scary shit and unfortunately ran into a Leaf patrol. Accidents happen and sometimes that means good ninjas end up on the wrong side of the kunai. Welcome to Elemental Nations.

Not sure if it's better that we mention it ourselves (a show of trust) or let him figure it out (no need to rub it in his face). But we should definitely tell him about the rain jutsu, considering how he died in canon.

Another seal we should learn is body sealing. For times like this when we kill people and want to get rid of the evidence.

@ChronOblivion Except Kawarimi uses handseals which also takes time; it'll also alert the enemy anyway (failed attempt is visible) and may not alert our allies (depending on where Hazou is relative to his team). Hazou will be alerted, but he's less valuable than Kagome who is our only offensive against someone capable of taking down Inoue.

My perspective on Jiraiya knowing that Akane was a missing ninja was that he recognized that she was at best a genin level ninja trained by the leaf academy and knew that someone with such limited skills would not be sent out on such a difficult assignment. Jiraiyi is able to ignore the status of Akane because he does not have access to the information on undercover operations that would enable him to explicitly confirm or deny whether any given missing nin is secretly working for Konoha. This lack of knowledge grants him plausible deniability and is the key reason he is able to legally help Akane.

Akane looked down for a moment, then made herself meet his eyes. "I was in the Academy at Hidden Leaf," she said. "I was not the best in the class, but I was in the top third. I passed my final exams and was due to graduate in the morning..."
"What's that?" Jiraiya asked. "I'm afraid I've had no time to pay attention to recent Academy graduates. As far as I can tell, you must be a Leaf genin in good standing, sent here on an infiltration mission that by some oversight I wasn't informed about..."
He knew Akane literally just graduated, otherwise he would not have bothered to say recent Academy graduates. So yes I do think he knows who Akane is.

Interlude: "Family" Bonding
Interlude: "Family" Bonding
"Not one of you?" Akane asked incredulously. "With the deepest respect, especially to Hazō-sensei and Inoue-sensei, what is wrong with you people? How can you have any youth at all if you don't even bother to celebrate each other's birthdays?!"

She strode purposefully up to Hazō, calendar in hand. "Well, Hazō-sensei?"

"June 27th," he said awkwardly. Birthday celebrations had always been a quiet family affair for the two Kurosawas.

"Long gone, huh. Never mind. Wakahisa?"

"Sorry, August 5th. What with Hazō's Big Damn Hero moment, and then the running, and all the stuff with Jiraiya, it completely went out of my head."

Akane pivoted slowly to her next target.

"...Mori?" she asked tentatively.

"June 3rd," Keiko said. "You need not make note of it."

Akane opened her mouth—

"October 31st!" Inoue-sensei said loudly. "My favourite gifts include chocolate, perfume and easily-concealable bladed weapons, and I have a whole list of stuff written down if anyone is struggling for ideas."

Akane beamed. "Thank you, Inoue-sensei."

Finally she turned to Kagome-sensei.

"What? What? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"When is your birthday?" Akane asked patiently.

"What? Why do you want to know that? Are you compiling a dossier on me? Is that it? Going to put together everything you know and sell it to the highest bidder, and then I wake up in the middle of the night to eight hunter-nin breaking down my door? Is that—"

"Kagome," Akane cut in, "I want to set your birthday aside so we can celebrate the fact that you're with us, and give you things we think you'll like as presents."

Kagome blinked several times. "I... I don't... no one's ever... December 18th."

Akane gave herself a satisfied nod and walked off. The rest of the group stared at her back, realising anew that they'd had no idea what they were getting into when they invited her to join (or, in Kagome-sensei's case, what he was getting into when they invited him to join).

Hazo shares the same birthday as Reto, the Shodaime Kazekage.

Inoue shares the same birthday as Yura, a Sunagakure jonin and ONE OF SASORI'S SLEEPER AGENTS RUN AWAY RUN AWAY

This thread is such popcorn.gif .

And not in a "amusing flame war" sort of way, but in a "market bubble that is clearly about to pop" sort of way.

@eaglejarl: when they come up, could we get these wee little snippets threadmarked? They add a good bit of flavor to the story and I'd hate for new readers to miss out on them.

Yeah, it's official; Akane is too good for our overly paranoid team full of barely functioning sociopaths. We don't deserve her. :(

I'm not sure what you mean.

I generally like providing information in-character when I'm in the right mood, and hopefully the collaborative tools will come out of alpha soon so I can do more of this and threadmark them myself.

@Velorien @eaglejarl How does Inoue react to standard passwords?

We should try to substitute. If fake!Inoue knows she has been discovered she will go on the offensive first.
If there are multiple mutually-contradictory plans for this, they should probably be part of your vote for the next update.

@Velorien So what's Akane's birthday?
"Me? Oh, I forgot, didn't I? I'm February 3rd. Thank you for asking, Hazō-sensei!"

Better idea. Let's make an explosive tag that won't explode within 5 feet of a safety seal. Then get all our teammates to wear them.
