Deciding the rollback to only go to 160 before we know our current capabilities seems like a pretty harsh move. Depending on how the new system shakes out we might not be able to successfully pull of the grand alliance. I'm just very against locking us into a situation and then changing our capabilities.
The grand alliance?

Rolling back to 160 instead of 159, IMO.

We now know things we hadn't considered before like adjusting for ranged attacks, Wakahisa Mist etc. so we can adjust the fort (or abandon it entirely). In fact, it it feels a little bit like cheating like when you reverse time in Prince of Persia after seeing where all the traps are.

The leaf rookies teams. With the change in system our capabilities could drastically change. So we might not have the fire power to take on all challengers. Would just like the chance to evaluate our new capabilities before we get locked into a death match with 12+ enemies.

For the sake of the characters, I'm going to ask the thread that if we do do the polyshipping thing, can we at least first ask any and all parties involved whether they can say, without a shred of self-deception, that they're one hundred percent behind this, and not just making concessions for someone-else's sake.

We do not want to start a relationship that any members of which are actually unhappy with.

You never knew whether you had the firepower to take on all challengers. That would require you to know how powerful your challengers are in advance. And after the system change, no matter how many chapters you roll back, you getting your new character sheets will tell you nothing about whether the new system has buffed or nerfed those challengers relative to you.

So we will have no knowledge of any changes the system makes to our capabilities relative to our peers? In the current system we knew 40 in a skill was chunnin level. 50 was jounin. Will we not even get that level of information?

Didn't the QMs say we'll see sample builds?

Maybe they could redo (omake) some of our past fights under the new rules?

Ah, the old days of constant terror of imminent death. Don't worry, those can be provided just as soon as we finish adjusting the new rules. The new mechanics for triggering sealing failures are already looking very promising.

Y'know, y'all are taking your sweet time in blowing up the major villages and plunging the world into a new Warring Clans period.

You will. But knowing the benchmarks does not give you immediate tactical information. It never did. You know you're fighting genin. You know a reference number for genin skill and a reference number for chūnin skill. You don't know if the genin you are about to fight are optimistic rookies, or if they're chūnin-level ninja who are just here for the formal certification, or if they're rookies with a stack of unfair advantages that make your benchmarks irrelevant, like enormous sealing arsenals, summoning scrolls or bloodlines that give them huge chakra pools.

:ninja:'d by the QM.

@Oneiros, the world may be trying to screw over our characters, but the QMs don't want to screw us over (beyond what's required to portray said world-screwing, of course :p). EJ even said right before the official system-change announcement that he could see the big change leading to the PCs being proportionately more powerful. I understand you're concerned - change does that, and if we don't watch out for bad things they're more likely to happen - but this level of concern about the system change nerfing us is probably overkill [/reassurance].

All fair points. But going into this we knew that Hazō had 25% more combat capabilities than the average fresh chunnin. If that advantage shrinks we obviously would be at an even worse position compared to potential ringers. So because in the old system we knew we could take most chunnin we choose an ambitious strategy. If in the new system we are closer to a coin flip we might pick a potentially less risk adverse plan.

Hazou is a full on Dork, thank you very much. I also had forgotten that our status as clan heir means we will be used as a method of "increasing our alliance with France" rather than continue on the path set by our Mother of marriage is a thing you do for love.

True. But I wouldn't worry too much. We don't intend to nerf you. Character sheets aren't going to be finalised without consultation with the players, and as the Keeper of the Sacred Nerfbat, I am already worried about how a bunch of your stuff is going to get buffed by changes to the skill system.

Cool cool. Though if we do end up getting buffed I would still like to rollback to 159. Might come up with an even more ambitious strategy then. Just want to make sure we can get a plan for dealing with stage 1 that is in line with our skills

I don't want us to roll back any further any more because it would de-canonise that wonderful chapter.
Glad you like it!

But when we were discussing whether it was OK to post this chapter where it was, it was noted that it doesn't actually need the fort. All it needs is for the relevant people to be in the same place at the same time. So a certain degree of retconning could be accomplished without difficulty.

This week's update is not going to follow a prompt. If I'm going to have ideas keeping me awake in the middle of the night, then I'm going to make use of them, dammit!

But- but- but-

Meanwhile, in another corner of the fort, two girls leaned back against a wall, looking up at the stars. Akane's arms were folded behind her, as if trusting more of her weight to the solidity of Hazō's walls, while Ino was more upright, one foot crossed over the other.

Jashin-dammit.

Now I can't even stay disappointed.

You know me too well.

"Do you remember the conversation we had that night, Ino?"

Oh boy.

Ino snorted. "How could I forget? I know we'd sort of been dancing around it all along, but still, way to blindside a girl."

Oh my.

"Sorry," Akane said. "I've got as far as being able to bring up hard topics. Knowing when and how to do it is a work in progress."

Oh dear.

"No big, Akane. And I backed off, didn't I, just like you asked?"

WHAT!?!?!

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooo..!

Akane nodded. "You're a good friend, Ino."

"C'mon, don't start gushing on me now," Ino rolled her eyes. "I got where you were coming from, that's all."

They never gave the relationship a chance.

MfD is now a romantic tragedy.

:((((

"No, I mean it." Akane looked down from the heavens to Ino's face. "You kept visiting me in hospital so I wouldn't be alone after Hazō was banned from Leaf. And you kept hanging out with me even after I was discharged."

"Down from the heaven" you say? So Akane is acting the part of the gracious victor?

She may not be rubbing salt in our wounds, but being emotionally eviscerated still hurts.

"You make yourself sound like a charity case, Akane. So I came by a few times. After the way Gōketsu fucked up, somebody had to pick up the pieces. I just happened to be someone who knew how tight you two were and had some time to spare. And then maybe I figured out that you're decent company now you've chilled out on all the youth stuff. I wasn't doing any of it because I was trying to be nice to you."

Translation: "B-baka, Akane. It's not like I like you." - Ino, probably.

"Of course you weren't," a small smile tugged on the edges of Akane's lips. "What was I thinking?"

Translation: "Who's a cute tsundere? You are! Yes you are. So cute." - Akane, most likely

"So," Ino said more cautiously, "if you're bringing up that talk we had, does that mean…"

Translation: "As much fun as it is talking about my romantic defeat at your hands is, is there going to be more to this conversation than simply rubbing it in my face, however politely?" - Ino, paraphrased

"Things have been very… stable since Hazō came back to Leaf," Akane said. "Peaceful. Consistent. Happy. I don't mean the world, I just mean him and me.

"Not that I'd mind a little change," she added. "There is such a thing as being too much of a gentleman." She glanced at Ino. "Oh, sorry, TMI."

Translation: "Before we get to that, how about some more bragging and then a dash of innuendo?" - Akane, definitely

Ino gave her an ironic look. "You haven't told him that you feel that way? And here I thought your whole thing was that you put everything into words where normal people just use signals."

I have the feeling that the entire world of MfD would be fundamentally different if Hazou could understand social signals.

Oh wait, sorry. I had a shtick going here.

Translation: "You can speak to him in a way he understands and you choose not to capitalize on your 'assured' victory because... why?" - Ino, perplexedly

"So I'm embarrassed," Akane said with a tinge of annoyance. "Nobody's perfect. And I wouldn't count on signalling where Hazō's concerned anyway. Can we move on?

"What I want to say is that I trust our relationship more now. It feels grounded. And I trust you more. I think I have a better handle on the kind of person you are now, and as I say, you're a good friend."

Translation: "You finally scored a point against me and I realize how painful it is, so now I am definitely getting to the point." - Akane, snobbishly

(No, I'm not bitter. Why would you say that?)

"Seriously, quit it, Akane. You're making me blush."

Translation: "FOOLISH MORTAL! AFTER EXPERIENCING EXCRUCIATING EMOTIONAL PAIN AT YOUR HANDS FOR FAR TOO LONG, I HAVE ASCENDED TO A HIGHER PLANE OF EXISTENCE! NOW SUCH PETTY SQUABBLES ARE BENEATH ME SO NOW I CAN PARTAKE IN HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS WITHOUT FEELING REMORSE!" - Ino, figuratively

Alternate Translation: "Oh, so NOW you want to stop verbally sparring? I see how it is, bi-" Ino, sassily

Akane took a deep breath. "And I trust myself more as well. You remember what a sorry mess I was in hospital. I feel like I'm still missing a lot of pieces, but I know that the Power of Youth hasn't gone anywhere just because I've lost touch with it. And I know that when I need it, I'll find a way to tap into it again without losing sight of who I am or who I want to be."

Translation: "I'm still crazy, but not totally crazy anymore." - Akane, stereotypically

Ino gave her a look of mixed awe and sarcasm the way only Ino could. "I'm never going to get used to the way you can say this stuff with a straight face. You're like Maito Gai if he was more grown-up and less batshit crazy."

Translation: "You talk like a sane person, but what you talk about is what a crazy person would say. You're not too weird, but you're still weird." - Ino, speculatively

"I think I'll take that as a compliment," Akane smiled. "What I'm trying to say, Ino, is that I think you can… un-back off now."

Transla-

Oh wait, hold the phone. Time to stop the coping mechanism.

"Are you sure?" Ino asked seriously. "Because hurting you? Not on my agenda. If I start having things to feel guilty about, I'll end up as gloomy as Shikamaru, and then you might as well kiss Team Asuma goodbye."

Yes it's important not to get your hopes up, but dammit girl, KEEP HOPE ALIVE!

"Yes," Akane said, gently but without hesitation. "I'm sure."

Once bitten, twice shy.

I'm cautiously optimistic and nothing more.

Look at what you've done to me.

"You know this might not change anything, right? Gōketsu and I are just playing around. Maybe we'll decide we're OK just playing around. Maybe I'll decide he's not my type. Or maybe he'll have his brain eaten by chakra parasites and decide I'm not the hottest, most amazing girl in the Elemental Nations—no offence."

It's good to see that Ino still has some bravado, even if it might be a bit forced right now.

"None taken," Akane said with a resigned familiarity. "I'm not trying to poke my nose into your and Hazō's business, not more than I have to. But if you two do decide to date, all three of us are going to have to face a metric ton of complications. I'm nothing on the political scale, but you're a clan heir, and Hazō's either heir or second after Noburi. You probably know better than I do how much trouble we'll be in if either of your clan heads decides they don't want us together.

We already knew that Akane knew about the political ramifications of her pairing with Hazou, but it's intriguing to see that she recognizes and accepts that Ino is prettier than her.

"If you two end up dating, if we end up facing that, then I want our relationships with each other to be rock-solid when it hits. That's what I'm trying to set up for now. That's why I'm putting everything out in the open. Maybe you two will decide you're better off as friends, and then none of this will matter. Maybe the three of us will try to do the thing, and it just won't work. Maybe it'll turn out there was no need for me to take everything so seriously. But to me, I think being youthful means doing the best job I can, so that no matter what happens, I won't have any regrets."

Ino stood there for a while, saying nothing, thinking.

Well.

Well.

Well.

The "thing" has been broached.

We are entering uncharted waters here gentlemen.

No matter what happens, it has been a pleasure serving with you all.

Do note though that Akane never explicitly brought up to Ino's face what might happen if she and Hazou broke up.

"You know," she said eventually, "until you guys came along I never thought I was a sucker for the serious types. I mean, look at what I had to work with. Shino? Sasuke? Shikamaru? Ugh. Well, Sasuke's smoking hot, so there's that, but I couldn't date a guy who doesn't know how to smile.

"I'm not going to make any promises. Gōketsu's cool, but, no offence to you as his girlfriend, he can be such a dork. And as Leaf's most eligible bachelorette, I've cool guys queuing up to date me by the dozen.

"Still," Ino turned to face Akane full-on, "it's a good feeling, knowing that you've got my back."

And hope has been rekindled in the end.

Such a rollercoaster every time.

Obviously MfD was meant to be a romantic comedy.

Let's just not turn it into a romantic tragedy in the end.
