Quick google search says: at 10,000 feet you can see 122 miles, at 30,000 feet you can see 211 miles, and at 40,000 feet you can see 244 miles, so if we dress warm and bring a purifier(?) we should be good.
A propos of nothing in particular, I've been looking up altitude sickness. What height have you guys been travelling at?

...Anyone else get this sudden feeling of foreboding that Akatsuki got to Sand? As in, they have people waiting for the message and are gonna capture+brainwash Minami?

Most of Akatsuki's top guys should be busy trying to suck the bijuu out of Yagura and/or Naruto right now, unless they're going to delay on that for some reason.

Also, no reason to think that Minami will know how Skywalkers work. We're not THAT bad at opsec.

I thought the issue was barometric pressure, to which any air released by the Tunneller's Friend would be subject?
Hm... possibly. I mean, I was basing that statement off of a quick google so if you've done more research than that I bow to your expertise, but according to WebMD, it occurs when you cannot get enough oxygen.

Yes and no.

Barometric pressure is the reason the oxygen levels are so low, but the core problem with altitude sickness is the lack of oxygen. Tunneler's Friend, if put close enough to the person, should give us enough oxygen before the gases are dispersed.

Hmm.

The main other issue that springs to mind is that Tunneller's Friend seals take an hour to charge, and release air based on how active you are when you're using them. If you're travelling rapidly for extended periods, you'll be burning through them very fast. Faster since the air release won't be perfectly efficient. That means a lot of seal scribing (and subsequent en masse charging) without Minami noticing anything.

I'm not even sure I should be pointing this out. I mean, Hazō would be aware of it, but on the other hand it's all information already available to the players as well, so the rationale behind increased agency shouldn't apply.

Altitude sickness isn't really an issue until you're pretty high -- I once got thrown out of an airplane at 15,000 feet and none of my issues at that moment were related to altitude sickness. I figure the team has mostly been traveling at around 5,000 - 10,000 feet. (Low-lying clouds are ~6,500 below 6,500.)

EDIT: Corrected height of clouds based on research instead of flawed memory.

I doubt it counts if your time at high altitude was measured in seconds.

For reference, I've been looking at this.

Are Tunneler's Friend seals reusable (I see no reason they wouldn't be as they are variants on storage seals that don't explode, unlike implosion seals, but)? If so, then we should have plenty from when we ran between Snow and that island and between that island and Leaf.

e:

As an aside, I'd like to put forth the following concern (and apologies to adding to your work loads, but it is somewhat important): given Jiraiya's explanation for not getting sealing failures (he's That Good, and he has Konoha sealmasters to check his theory), once we get around to doing real sealwork, would we get a bonus to avoiding sealing failures or something as long as we go through the proper channels (which would likely result in our sealwork being made public)?

Since we haven't been showing signs of altitude sickness despite a rapid ascent and long duration at height I assume the seals either work, chakra protects against it somehow or a combination of both.
for reasons not entirely understood, high altitude and lower air pressure causes fluid to leak from the capillaries which can cause fluid build-up in both the lungs and the brain. Continuing to higher altitudes without proper acclimatization can lead to potentially serious, even life-threatening illnesses.
HACE is the result of swelling of brain tissue from fluid leakage. Symptoms can include headache, loss of coordination (ataxia), weakness, and decreasing levels of consciousness including, disorientation, loss of memory, hallucinations, psychotic behavior, and coma. It generally occurs after a week or more at high altitude. Severe instances can lead to death if not treated quickly. Immediate descent is a necessary life-saving measure (2,000 - 4,000 feet [610-1,220 meters]). There are some medications that may be prescribed for treatment in the field, but these require that you have proper training in their use. Anyone suffering from HACE must be evacuated to a medical facility for proper follow-up treatment.

It was an unpressurized plane and we climbed to altitude slowly, but yeah, the exposure might just have been too short.

Still, that document you linked says that there aren't serious issues until 10,000 feet. Let's just say they've been staying at 5,000. Clouds can be as low as 1,000 so I don't think there's anything contradictory to MfD-canon in that.

I realise there is an obvious explanation for this event, but the alternatives are so much fun.

"When I first asked out the woman who is now my wife, she slapped me across the face and stormed off."

"Well, mine took me above cloud level and then threw me off the aeroplane."

Re: altitude sickness. As someone who's climbed 14,000 foot tall mountains (doing vigorous exercise at 14,000 feet above seal level for hours at a time), it affects people differently, but generally you notice it by getting winded ~ 2-4 times as quickly, and sometimes get headaches (which drinking water will help). Some people, especially those who are not at all used to high altitudes or in great shape, who do vigorous exercise at altitude, can get nose bleeds which we have been told can be lethal.

Edit: also nausea is not uncommon.

Just from personal experience, going from Florida to when I hiked pikes peak I didn't start feeling the symptoms of altitude sickness until around 11,000 feet, and I still made it to the top. Seeing as they're ninja, and likely have absurd levels of fitness compared to the average American, I'd think that as long as our team stays below 10,000 feet that they'll probably be fine.

E. Though I did have about 12 hours to acclimatize overnight at ~8000 feet in Colorado springs.
E.2 Which is pretty much exactly what the team has been doing- they've been sleeping in the skytowers and acclimatizing.

Huh? Isn't Luna in her 30s or something?
The epilogue doesn't exist. HP ended when all of the main cast was <~17yo.

Also, I found something in your plan to cause screaming. I think.
TL;DR: Minami, Suna.

[TINFOIL HAT] I literally just* had the suddenly horrified(?) realization. Jiraiya and Mari know our proclivities towards fucking things up.
They arranged it so [Minami can speak to J's contact without us eavesdropping, allowing her to pass a silent alarm along if necessary], by having one of the objectives specifically be "contact this guy in Suna." Since the majority of the team can't go, that's plausible deniability for Minami to get away for a little bit if she needs to.[/TINFOIL]

oooor she can make Keiko send a message to Jiraiya via pangolin messenger, using a phrase the team doesn't know about.
