Have we shown her any medically-relevant seal? AFAIK the only ones we have are the Minato seals. As for shadow clone, I'm surprised that she hasn't insisted on getting it for more of the senior doctors.
We also have dampeners which are handy for surgery. I don't recall if we shared those or not, I think we left it up to Noburi if he wanted to

Hmm good point. It's unlikely we're not gonna need to put up some nutty barriers even if the rift battle goes well
Hmm. What if we could bury the runes underground or otherwise hide them? Then it'd be like "Oh, Leaf has some SS barrier seal" instead of "Oh, Leaf has a whole new sealing paradigm."

Well, dampeners aren't a top secret, really. I don't think we care who gets them. They're just not in the same class as SC or runecrafting.

I dunno if it's gonna be possible unless we make the ultimate OPSEC rune or something lol

I know I'm just saying there's precedent for Tsunade not forcing people to fork their shit over. If anything the fact that dampeners aren't a big deal and she still didn't try to make us give em up shows that she doesn't press bounds even on minor secrets.

She's the same way as Oro - you can't be too annoying to make deals and trades with or no one will show you stuff you're interested in anymore.

We're not going to be able to defend Leaf without making some very public runes....
I was about to suggest "what if we disguise the runes as just War Jutsu, like what Kagome told us about?" but then I realized that War Jutsu most likely works here as well and we don't want anyone to start inventing that either.

But still, general principle holding, we could disguise it as something else, even if the cover story is only partially effective that's still beneficial. Ideally... hmmmm. Ideally it's something the villages already recognize as something that can be absurdly powerful yet not within their means to obtain. Something like a dojutsu.

Guys, I think it's time to tell the world that we unlocked the Mangekyou Iron Nerve.

Something that came up on discord earlier today: skytowers still seem to be a Leaf-exclusive secret, and as a result nobody else should have the ability to travel far out into sea without a boat. Ninja can island-hop by running across the water, but only when they can make the trip in one go. Boats, meanwhile, suffer from the constant worry of hostile aquatic chakra beasts. You can't disengage from combat as easily as you could if you had skywalkers equipped, and if you lose the ship you better hope you're still within range of the shore.

This all to say, the deep sea honestly sounds like a pretty safe place to be. Nobody knows that Leaf (and by extension, us) has the means to run that far out without relying on boats, which means they shouldn't expect us to be out there in the first place. It seems likely to me that the Akatsuki has sufficient hax to also traverse the deep sea (even though I can't think of anything off the top of my head), but they're much less likely to head out in a direction they believe we most likely can't physically be in.

The question, in this scenario, becomes "so how do we do our research?" Doing it on top of active seal effects is forbidden, of course. One option is to find a small island like a cay/key, way out in the deeps. But I'm not sure we could find one, or that it'd truly be as secure as we'd like, so I have two rune proposals that might give us some land to work with (one my own, one provided by Buggy):
  • A rune that raises a pillar out of the seafloor, like MEW writ large, creating a small island just large enough to build a research facility on.
  • A rune that freezes a large amount of seawater, forming an iceberg large enough to build a research facility on.
The first one has raised concerns about affecting the ocean currents. I'm no expert in such matters, but I think that if we're just raising a pillar and the pillar isn't too large in radius then the effects might be mostly minimal? For the iceberg, the worry is more a question of how stable it'll be: if it's bobbing and turning with the waves, I doubt the facility we build on it would be up to spec.

Both of these warrant prep days, I think. The requirement that research facilities not be built on active chakra effects is our biggest limitation on where we can go to avoid pursuit, and it would be very convenient if we could create temporary islands to alleviate that problem. We can still look for keys if they both fail, but I'm broadly feeling good about this line of inquiry. And the fact that we by right shouldn't be able to go this far out into the ocean is a very promising avenue to follow for evading pursuit: I once argued that one of Hidan's main limits is the point where he's followed his Jashin compass far enough that the hypothesis "I missed Hazou and am just wasting my time going further" outweighs "Hazou is still somewhere beyond this point". I mean, I don't actually expect Hidan would reach the edge of the EN, past which there's boundless ocean, and figure we must be yet farther than that, as opposed to his trajectory having just barely missed us somewhere along the line.

If we're so far out that nobody credibly believes we went that far (because they do not know that we're capable of doing so), we win the hunting game. Or at least, our odds are much greater, even against Hidan and his Jashin luck. I'm thinking this is within our means to achieve, especially if one of the two runes I outlined works out, and is a strong contender as a main hiding strategy.

Given our large increase in runic expertise we should do a prep day on time travel, too. More Hazous is more better.

I don't see how this could possibly be large enough to change ocean currents, they are large, unless this island is the size of New Zealand we should be okay. Iceberg is untenable IMO, they drift and that'll shift the astrological signs (or something).

[X] Action Plan: Welcome to Uplift
Word Count: 299
  • Today
    • Thank Tenten for leaving Leaf on Kei's word alone. We'll do our best to be worthy of it.
    • Welcome to Team Uplift, Hazou has new seals to scribe for everyone, we'll get you read into to our codes, combat strategies, and capabilities ASAP. If you want any jutsu we have, or seals, just ask. Kei, mind taking point?
      • Suggest Flame Aura (if Tenten doesn't already know it).
    • Sanity check the rest with Kei
    • Head to the bladehorror rift in Iron to take observations with the team, use MS 8 and chakrascope.
    • At check-in, (after swearing them to secrecy) brief the Toad Sages on the situation, show them Naruto's letters. Tell them of Itachi's genjutsu and mind-control capabilities. Ask them to evaluate Noburi for traces of Itachi's influence.
      • If they question why we're getting into this much trouble, show them Jiriaya's letter, he told us to.
      • Instruct Noburi to start setting up the same anti-communications protocols on the Seventh Path as the other Uplift Summoners
      • Tell Noburi's team to meet us at the bladehorror rift
  • Tomorrow
    • SCs work on difficulty checks for the 3 Rift Runes Naruto described, use the observations from the previous day.
      • Prime scribes seals for the team (RRBs, Force Blades, skywalkers etc.)
    • Send Canvass alone to meet with Noburi's team, and detect if they smell abnormal (mind controlled, scent-based trackers etc.) and to sniff around for anyone following them.
      • If she's forcibly dispersed, run.
      • Now that we're missing-nin, Hazou will teach Shadow Clone to anyone who wants it.
    • Next, we're heading to Oro's chakra water cave in Wind, to replicate its effects with Runes for our mission, and Leaf's attack force.
      • Plan: Skywalk to directly above it and dive down. Use a telescope to confirm no human presence.
      • Any other suggestions to get in undetected?
Okay plan is now back to 299, let me know if y'all have any additional suggestions!

ITACHI: This is a disaster! A Mangekyō Iron Nerve user's powers would be the perfect mirror to mine! That means he has the power to... slow time within his own mind and turn himself into a vessel that others can pilot. Huh. Actually, there's no possible way that could be a threat to us.

skytowers still seem to be a Leaf-exclusive secret

Overall the secret might be somewhat safe, but
I know for a fact Crow spies have been studying former skytower sites in abandoned Pangolin territory, though Keiko assures me the Pangolins took care to clean up after themselves.

And then Akane's death and other Leaf ninja that might have had a Skytower and got killed? Some might suspect something.

Shows what he knows. The true ability of the Mangekyo Iron Nerve is turn Marked for Death from a quest into a TTRPG.

Shark summons. Chakra megalodon is easily big enough to lay down and take a nap on, if it cooperates.

Based on what I remember of a cold war era air force survival training manual, previously linear surface waves will bend around even a relatively small island, creating an X-shaped region of surface turbulence, which someone in a raft can follow to find the island. Also a sort of crosshatched wave-crest pattern downwind.

Can we just have Lens of Violence please? Our SC would be pretty cool with that, who cares about the meat?

Why is the part about Hazō teaching SC under the "Send Canvass" item?

As Oro described it, he just starts walking in a "random" direction and happens to be correct. He may be able to discern we're over the ocean but not know more specifics than that. It would be harder for us to hide a research facility in the middle of the ocean compared to a forest (we would likely stick out more) but OTOH it would be harder to sneak up on us via skywalkers/flying, you'd have to sneak up by swimming. Probably they would need to send Kisame or Deidara after us if we went this route, the others aren't as equipped for ocean voyage
