Maybe you can find and repurpose an open source one?

What exactly do you mean by that?

When I said, "write a webcrawler", I am going to use an open source library so that I don't spend a week or two just coding the very basic stuff before I even get to webcrawling. But even so, it's going to be a slow process, because I would still be in learning mode, using a library I never used before.

The time spent will be: 1) reading documentation, 2) writing code using the library, 3) bang head against desk, and repeat.

This process is invariably the same no matter how much work a library does for me.

Ahh. I don't have much experience with coding. I was halfway hoping there would be an open-source webcrawler out there that you could just modify the locations it pulls from.

While it's totally in my capacity as a programmer, it's non-trivial work.

For starter, I never really wrote a webcrawler before, nor try to parse data, and so on.

It's actually not that bad as long as you're willing to 80/20 it. The thing that generally makes crawlers hard is multithreading, which is necessary for any serious crawl. For this purpose, though, it's overkill. Have your crawler download the pages synchronously in a single process and cache them to disk. That'll take ten-ish minutes the first time (900 pages) but so what? From then on you just grab new pages. Once things are cached it's easy to manipulate them.

CounterBot is written in Perl, using the HTML::Tree distribution, which makes all the parsing pretty much trivial. I wrote a Forum::SufficientVelocity module that knows how to grab posts and text of posts, as well as parse out votes and such. If you're not a Perl guy you can simply translate that code to your preferred language.

The part you'll actually find tricky is SV's markup, which is a total pain in the neck. Again, the CounterBot code will handle most of that for you or show you how to handle it.

Oooh and Kei can let us study the summoning scroll! (anyone wanna take bets on her actually being cool with this? I'm not especially confident of it)
If she was going to let us study the scroll she would have already. Getting it was something of a team project. She thinks the scroll is dangerous knowledge.

*cue me trying to come up with an insightful response while also trying not to fall asleep in case the update drops in the early London morning while also debating whether it'll drop later in the day so I should just sleep now*

We could bring up that the VHitM clearly based their sealing style on it. And offer to learn summoning theory from her before we mess with summoning seals at all.

The update hasn't dropped but I'll throw out some Training Plans and my thoughts on them anyway. I probably won't have the time to participate in the next vote round so if someone likes these just copy-paste them as options (Please double check the numbers if you do...).

Three builds for both Akane and Hazou. I'm okay with any one of these.

Hazou:

[X] Training Hazou: Whale of Sealing

Capacity 6 [12]
Capacity 7 [26]
Capacity 8 [42]

Wits 5 [52]
Intelligence 13 [78]
Sealing 13 [91]

Saved 10 XP

This is @OliWhail 's plan originally. It gives us some capacity and prepares us for the sealing work that we are about to do. Capacity 8 is barely adequate, it leaves Hazou with 3 extra substitutions after the bare essentials. I recommend that we save the XP left over and get more Capacity as soon as we are able.

[X] Training Hazou: Wall of Speed

Capacity 6 [12]
Capacity 7 [26]
Capacity 8 [42]
Capacity 9 [60]

MEW 7 [67]
MEW 8 [75]
MEW 9 [84]
MEW 10 [94]

Saved 7 XP

The Earth Walls are Hazou's sole ranged option currently. Capacity will make it actually possible for Hazou to use them in a fight meaningfully and the extra levels will make them fast enough to actually catch our opponents by surprise. This is in my opinion the best build for combat purposes.

EDIT: It also opens up the half cost earth jutsu option. Meaning we could squeeze in Earth Clones 3 (costs 2.5 XP) into the plan so we could actually use the jutsu.

[X] Training Hazou: Well of Lies

Capacity 6 [12]
Capacity 7 [26]

Presence 5 [36]
Composure 5 [46]
Manipulation 7 [60]

Deception 13 [73]
Deception 14 [87]

Roki 7 [94]

Saved 7 XP

This is the social build, for all our efforts Hazou is not really that savvy as an operator. Less chakra, better lying and 1 dice more for combat. If we go this way we are pretty much committing to getting Capacity 8 after we get 9 more XP.

Akane:

[X] Training Akane: Mechanical Capacity

Capacity 6 [12]
Capacity 7 [26]

MechApt 14 [40]
MechApt 15 [55]

Saved 8 XP

Like Hazou, Akane only has chakra for the bare essentials. This plan would give her 2 extra Substitutions in battle, this is the lowest I dare to go with her Capacity growth. MechApt 15 is the limit we can reach before specialization. Might as well get there now so we can find a teacher/textbook for her to study.

[X] Training Akane: Don't Notice Me Sensei!

Capacity 6 [12]
Capacity 7 [26]

Stealth 12 [38]
Stealth 13 [51]

Saved 12 XP

It would be nice if we had a stealthy genin in our team for once. Akane will be slotted in as our break-in expert anyway, so she will need that. (See my signature for my other thoughts in the matter) The next step would be to continue to raise Akane's Capacity or Stealth. Either should be doable after the next time we get XP.

[X] Training Akane: Don't Notice Me Sensei! with extra Stalky

Capacity 6 [12]
Capacity 7 [26]

Stealth 12 [38]
Stealth 13 [51]

Awareness 10 [61]

Saved 1 XP

I'm not so sure about this one. It boils down to this: Do we want Akane to rely on Keiko to spot traps for her, or should she be the one to specialize in Awareness. I've been going for Keiko as the Awareness monkey since it fits with her bloodline, but we could have Akane do it instead. Anyway, Akane has the attributes for Awareness 10 and spending XP is usually better than not, so this is also something worth considering.

I don't have big thoughts on Keiko or Nobby. Keiko should probably get enough capacity to function after summoning something big and Noburi should get as much medical skills as possible.

EDIT: No wait. Actually Keiko should get Subsitution 8, she's the one who can make best use PMYF anyway and currently she has only Substitution 1.

Since we will be taking an extended break (Jashin willing), we can probably also do some sealing projects. There are two projects I would go for next, neither of them should require any more Sealing levels than we currently have:

EDIT: We could probably do these even with the malus dice, especially if we get Sealing 13.
  1. Casino Seals
    • We can probably get more Awareness with these and they will make excellent alarm seals when we are resting or spying or not actively using chakra
    • They open up sound, light and chakra sensing research paths. Those will be super useful at one point or the other
  2. Tripwire Seals for civilian usable Storage Scrolls
    • Super useful if we want to deal with merchants etc. We can make big money with these things.
    • Opens up the other barrier seals as research projects (or at least makes them easier?)

Potential training plan brainstorming.

Hazou:

If we wanted to go more basics,
Capacity 6 (12/101)
Dexterity 5 (10+12 = 22/101)
Taijutsu 15e16 (15+22 = 37/101)
TacMov 15e16 (15+37 = 52/101)
Taijutsu 16e17 (16+52 = 68/101)
Taijutsu 17e18 (17+68 = 85/101)
Stealth 9e10 (9+85 = 94)
MEW 7 (7 + 94 = 101)
Save 0 XP
Everything beyond Taijutsu 15e16 needs a strength and stamina boost, so this plan and two others after it are a nope.

Leveling sealing at this point also gets a nope from me, bc I see research with more than 1 malus die as too risky, and Once we sufficiently recover we have things to do a plenty for which current sealing level shall suffice.

Capacity 6 (12/101)
Capacity 7 (14+12 = 26/101)
Capacity 8 (16+26 = 42/101)
Capacity 9 (18+42 = 60/101)
Dexterity 5 (10+60 = 70/101)
Taijutsu 15e16 (15+70 = 85/101)
TacMov 15e16 (15+85 = 100/101)
Save 1 XP

I might go for this. Taijutsu 15e16 is to me the low hanging fruit of this tree, since we're buying dex anyway.

Also going to 16 from 15 means that in mass combat, Hazou can contribute 2 bonus dice vs opponent with 24 dice, vs 21 dice now.

Given that Komori boosted for 29 dice, that puts her at 23 max, but above 21 I suspect. Another bonus die for everyone may have turned the tide.

Capacity is also a good choice bc it's something Hazou can level bed-ridden.

Keiko:
Capacity 11 (22/74)
TacMov 16 (16+22 = 38/74)
Substitution 2 (2+38 = 40)
Substitution 3 (3+40 = 43)
Substitution 4 (4+43 = 47)
Substitution 5 (5+47 = 52)
Substitution 6 (6+52 = 58)
Substitution 7 (7+58 = 65)
Substitution 8 (8+65 = 73/74)
Save 1 XP
This gets her to sealless kawarimi and lets her pick her ranges a little better, and would be my current vote.
This was my own plan for Keiko, cept for TacMov.
Initiative might or might not be rolled in the future, but if it is, it would make sense to use the skill used previously, do more TM is generally fine with me.
Alternatively, buy henge with that XP.

Strength 7 (8/63 + 6/6)
Stamina 7 (14+8 = 22/63)
Youthful Fist 7 (7+22 = 29/63)
Diplomacy 6 (6+29 = 35/63)
Awareness 10 (10+35 = 45/63)
MechApt 14 (14+45 = 59/63)
Transformation 2 (2+59 = 61/63)
Save 2 XP and 0.4 conditioning XP
Every Akaneplan that raises her str and sta with XP other than bonus gets a big no from me. For combat utility, buy her a point of dex, and 3 levels of taijutsu.

Otherwise, sneaking or MechApt to 15. Some capacity would also be good. I'll prob vote for any mix of the four.

Noburi needs to get his mednin on if we can find his teacher.
We can get him another point of control. Beyond that, it will depend on QMs what exactly he picks up, tho I hope one skill will be at lvl 10 so he can work on something independently.

E: for Hazou, I also like MEW and Roki plans above.

Chapter 65: Misstep
Within the absolute, frozen silence, Hazō felt a sudden stab of pain. The only thing Keiko loved? The only thing she had left?

Was this what it meant to have feelings for someone? That you wanted them and them alone, and other people simply ceased to matter? Hazō hadn't expected Keiko to love him, not in those words, but he'd thought they were friends. He thought they'd gradually been growing closer. Had none of that meant anything to her?

Around him, the others didn't appear to be taking it any better. Noburi was reeling, biting down hard on his lip, his body tense with obvious distress. Inoue-sensei's expression was so flawlessly neutral it might have come from an anatomy practice dummy. Akane's eyes were wide with dawning realisation. And Keiko herself, hand still over her mouth, looked like she'd just botched the infusion for the world's biggest space-time manipulation seal.

Hazō was not too lost in his own pain to miss the voice of intuition whispering to him. Any second now, it told him, somebody would say something without thinking it through first, and the team would fall apart at a time when they were already on the edge of disaster.

"We need to keep moving," he said loudly. "We're still being pursued, and we should meet up with Kagome-sensei and get out of Hot Springs as fast as possible. If he's not at camp, he must be checking the tertiary trap array."

Was he the only one who'd cared about those times bonding over communication issues and hotly-debated plans? Had they been bonding, or had he been projecting his own desire for friendship onto her? Did Noburi feel the same way about him? What if he'd been wrong from the start, about what friendship was and how it worked? And Sage, what about Akane? If he was wrong about her

"Keiko, we all care about you and respect your feelings," Akane said suddenly, "but right now we have to put everything on hold until we're safe. Now, you're the least injured, so could you drop back and guard the rear of the formation? I'll be just ahead of you carrying gear."

Best. Apprentice. Ever.

"Noburi's the most hurt," Hazō picked up on her thinking, "so I'll be in the middle with him doing the same. Inoue-sensei, could you take point?"

-o-
"Password," Kagome-sensei barked, eyeing them perhaps slightly more suspiciously than usual.

"Eye socket spiders," Hazō said.

Kagome-sensei grunted.

"Don't move," he said. "Something's off about you. You've been gone too long, and now you're all looking shifty, like you're trying to hide that something's wrong."

There was a second's pause.

"You thought you could fool old Kagome, did you?" Kagome-sensei shouted, reaching down for a concealed wire. "Well, I've got news for you, you stinking stinkers—"

"Kagome-sensei," Hazō cut in urgently. ""You know that seal we couldn't make work, the one with all the tentacles? Well, I had a thought about how we could weaponise it if we…"

Kagome-sensei groaned and let go of the wire. "You're Hazō all right. Also, never think that thought again.

"So what's going on?"

"We were forced into combat and had to run away. And now Hot Springs and everyone else is going to be after us for killing a jōnin in a DMZ."

"You fought a jōnin." Kagome said. "That wasn't part of the plan. You don't fight a jōnin without a plan. That's like doing sealcrafting experiments with no safety protocols. In fact it's worse, because if sealcrafting goes wrong, you might survive. In some form. What were you even—"

"Kagome-sensei," Hazō said. "Hordes of pursuing ninja? Out for blood? Possibly on their way here right now?"

"Oh, right." Kagome-sensei reluctantly broke off his building tirade.

"Anyway," Hazō said, the rest of the team still silent around him, "I was thinking we could head to Iron to hide out for a while. The hunter-nin should be long-gone by now, and with most of the missing-nin there eliminated, the area shouldn't be getting much attention from any of the major powers. Plus you know it well, Kagome-sensei, and we have contacts there."

"Right," Kagome-sensei nodded. "That could work. Do us good to get out of here and far away from the lupchanz, anyway."

"And I was thinking of stopping by the Swamp of Death on the way."

"The Swamp of Death," Kagome-sensei repeated slowly. "Is that what it sounds like?"

Hazō was quite proud of this part of the plan. "It's a swamp in the Fire Country, filled with incredibly lethal chakra monsters and killer plants. It was where we were first hiding before Leaf led a Mist strike force to destroy our camp. But Inoue-sensei got us out just in time."

Kagome gave Hazō a strangely sceptical look.

"So Leaf knows about this place, they've got people who know how to navigate it, and they know that Mist and a bunch of missing-nin know where it is."

"Well, yes, but…"

"Not your finest moment, Hazō," Inoue-sensei commented, her first words since… that. "After Hidden Swamp, Leaf will have changed its patrol routes to cover the swamp's borders. They won't want to ever have to send people in there again. Besides, don't you remember the crazy chase we had to go through the first time round, with Leaf snapping at our heels until the last second? No, the Swamp of Death isn't happening."

"All right," Hazō said, trying to salvage some credibility as the team's plan-maker. "Then why don't we cut across Fire until we reach Waterfall, and then cross from there into Iron?"

Inoue-sensei gave him a frustrated look. "You want us to spend more time in Leaf territory, and then time in Waterfall, so we can have a safer crossing into Iron? That's like walking a tightrope over an abyss because the rope bridge looks rickety. Are you trying to get us killed?"

"I'm sorry, Inoue-sensei," Hazō said sheepishly.

She sighed. "No, that wasn't fair of me. Just… stuff. Let's get moving."

"Can you hear that, Inoue-sensei?"

Inoue-sensei gritted her teeth. "You mean that noise from behind us? Yeah, they're catching up. That's what I hate about killing jōnin – it puts your threat rating so high, people spare no expense trying to chase you down. We've got a decent lead, though. With luck, we can outrun them. We really don't want to fight the kind of people they'd send after us, not in our current condition."

"Um," Hazō said. "Actually, I meant the movement coming from the south."

"Fuck."

Inoue-sensei didn't need to spell it out. Leaf had spotted them, and although they might be able to handle a weak Leaf patrol – they'd done it before, after all – if either force managed to pin them down even briefly, the other would have time to catch up, at which point they'd be caught between the hammer and the anvil.

You have received 5 XP. (It was a good plan, but most of it hasn't happened yet; if we can get back to it, you will be rewarded appropriately.)

A rare insight into the QM thought process:

"I can't wait to write that Hugs for Everyone debrief. I've finally finished planning, and I have such great scenes in mind for X, Y and Z.

"This isn't like their previous journeys, though. They've got HS in hot pursuit, and they're having to cut across a fair bit of Hot Springs and Fire. I'd better make some quick rolls to make sure they make a clean getaway.

"Eh, should be fine. The HS pursuers are good, but they're suffering from massive maluses thanks to the team's exfiltration preparations, and Leaf's not expecting any trouble from Hot Springs or Rice, so they're not going to be at their most alert here.

"So, rolling for the team… Wait, Hazō and Noburi both have Stealth 9. Urk.

"Never mind, though, they have TacMov 15 across the board. They'll easily get away, and this will all have just been a little bit of excitement before we move on to the meat of the update."

Oh come on! They knew about this place before, didn't stop us first time.

Sure, there won't be a village there again, but we don't want one. We want to spend the night. And we evade patrols all most of the time, considering the number of borders we crossed since the beginning of the quest. And same for crazy chase - we aren't bringing 30 people here.

I still maintain it was a good spot to take a break in, where we'd have advantages over pursuit.

Not that it matters now. Argh.

Scratch those training plans, it's clearly TM 18 time once we have the option >_>

Fuck even is this <_>

And Sage, what about Akane? If he was wrong about her

Okay Hazou, let's not get crazy here.

Kagome-sensei groaned and let go of the wire. "You're Hazō all right. Also, never think that thought again.

Aww.

Of course we rolled 511 with 15 dice, what else?

I have like few hours to contribute to this round. My initial thoughts:

The only escape route we have left is through the islands towards Lightning, everything else takes us through Fire and apparently that's a no-go. I didn't suggest this at first because it's a super obvious route that Lightning probably monitoring heavily, and there are no easy exits out of Lightning even if we get there.

That is assuming we can dodge our current pursuers somehow.

It's got its pros and cons. Can't blame Inoue-sensei for feeling a little risk-averse right now, though.
