Hazō has seen jade before. The Seal is not any kind of jade he recognizes.

Uh-huh. Putting aside the different grades for a moment, how familiar is he with enamel? He was raised in destitution and presumably didn't get a lot of chances to examine ivory, much less what expert hands could craft it into.

Hey, this is a good thing. There is a shared reason the Byzantines considered both bone china and greek fire state secrets. Throw some chicken bones into a kiln with charcoal for carbothermic reduction and you get unquenchable phosphine flame in a bottle just waiting for a hint of atmospheric moisture. Solving this is going to be fun.

Chapter 453: Sealing the Deal
I see what you did there. Clever.
December 19, 1070, the day after Kagome-sensei's birthday
This seems like a pretty good thing to save for an interlude. May as well save it for a day when you actually have the spoons.
because I feel like death warmed over
Oh no! That's terrible. How are you feeling now? I hope you've gotten at least a little better.
I try to lean positive when my personal blechiness might be making me judge more harshly than normal.
Oh hey, me too! Cool to see that you do the same thing.
sinking into the granite he had previously created with the Multiple Earth Wall.

Called it! I totally called it!
Of course, doing it this way also took a lot more time, hence the latrine. He was going to be here a while.
You're letting him stop concentrating long enough to pull down his pants and relieve himself. How surprisingly merciful of you. I was expecting for him to need to ahem change his pants ahem after long casts until he got to level 50 or so.
"Perhaps we could allow Hazō to speak," the Hokage said.

Silence ruled the meadow.
I know it's awful but I love how everyone is absolutely terrified of going even slightly against our Almighty Dictator Asuma. The little scenes like this always get me.

Also isn't Hazō completely exhausted right now? That one guy is a real asshole (even more than I initially thought).

It goes in as a laminar flow!"
Chakra can exhibit laminar flow?! Wtf. Since when did chakra behave like a fluid? Also, the fact that it can exhibit laminar flow of all things says quite a bit about chakra itself.

On second thought, I'm just reading the technobabble too closely, aren't I? @eaglejarl did you mean for this to just be flavor text or can I actually look deeper.

Oh, by the way, Laminar Flow wasn't even theorized until the late 1800s.
The Hokage cleared his throat.

Silence ruled the meadow.
:)
"With your permission, sir, I still need to talk to Cannai."

Asuma raised an eyebrow.

"I'm fine sir, really."

"Very well. You know your limitations and obligations better than I do. Don't push yourself too hard. We're going to need you fresh in the morning."

"Thank you sir."

Asuma stepped in close so he could take the papers and clap Hazō on the shoulder. "Leaving your Hokage here to face all this alone?" he whispered, tipping his head slightly towards where Motoyoshi and Minami were already going at it. "I don't know, Hazō. I think this might be treason."

Hazō struggled not to laugh. He was facing away from the other sealmasters, which helped, and the Iron Nerve clamped down to maintain his calm and unruffled body language.

"Yes sir. Shall I report myself to Torture and Interrogation?"

Asuma shook his head regretfully. "I suppose we'll let it go this time. Just be sure you come back in the morning. The only time they aren't about to punch each other is when they're listening to you."

"I'll be here first thing, sir."

Asuma gave his shoulder a friendly squeeze and pushed him towards the path. "Off you go. Good job today."
I also really love the rapport between Hazō and Asuma. Both as it being fun to read and because I think it means that Asuma may be slightly less likely to sentence us to treason whenever we're on the fence enough that he wouldn't lose face by letting us off with a slap on the wrist. A highly specific circumstance, I know, but it might come up eventually.

Reaction done. What do you think, @eaglejarl? I hope you feel better soon!

Quickly! Break out the relativistically adjusted Navier–Stokes equations!

Japanese bilingual puns from @eaglejarl and not @Velorien? I never thought I'd see the day…

Hey, I thought that Mr. Dental Seal was pretty clever...

[х] Grue's New Meal
  • Look through your sealing project backlog, see if there's something that might help with the Great Seal.
    • Wait, why on Earth were you spending time on these "jacuzzi seals"?
  • Find Kagome.
    • Does he remember what the jacuzzi seals were for?
    • Why is he looking so sad, anyway?
    • Does he think Fifi is going to get along with Kei's cat(?), Yosamu?
      • How come so many people in your family have... temperamental chakra cats(?) as pets, anyway?
      • You vaguely remember something about Noburi and/or Jiraiya giving Yosamu to Kei out of some obligation. Why would they do that?
    • And why is this conversation making you irrationally mad at Ren?

A little, yes. Thanks for the concern.

You're letting him stop concentrating long enough to pull down his pants and relieve himself.
He's sitting on the latrine and not wearing pants.

I wouldn't try to go too deep into it, no.

Much appreciated.

Check the names of the clan bosses. :>

All right, here's an idea. To ward off an obvious objection: I don't believe this is going to to cost Hazou any additional time; the intention is that, if she finds it useful, Ami will take it from here on out, with no input on our part.

@Velorien, does this still stand? More importantly, does the central idea of the plan below sound like fun?

[x] Action Plan: Total Memetic Warfare
Word count: 393
  • Meet with Cannai. Thank for the bison meat. Can we arrange regular trade?
    • How is the Conclave going?
    • Provide the jutsu wish-list (below).
  • Meet with Ami (reasonably secure location).
    • Foreword: New project idea. You're already overwhelmed, though, and she's probably more qualified for this.
      • She can use it herself, or refine it and present to Asuma.
    • Introduction:
      • Ideologies are powerful tools, capable of manipulating entire societies. Villages and Summon Clans employ them for indoctrination, but you suspect their full potential isn't yet realized.
        • Precaution: Don't use WoF as an example. It's True, sacred. Drop a few passing statements to this effect.
      • Ideologies are collection of mutually-adapted ideas embedded into some overarching framework. The same physical action could have different meanings under different ideologies, and perhaps only make sense under an ideology.
      • Some ideologies spread better than others. Since they're composite, this implies specific ideology-parts which are responsible for "virality".
    • Proposal:
      • Construct an artificial ideology, consisting of:
        • Some core idea. Examples: Uplift, Youth, the will of ancestors, a specific kami.
        • Traits that make it useful, viral, and persistent. Examples:
          • Validation of pre-existing beliefs and life struggles.
          • Regular group rituals to reinforce commitment and community cohesion.
          • General good advice: "sleep well", "be nice to your family".
        • "Payload": traits you want to encourage. Pick focus depending on the ideology's purpose, between:
          • Positive traits: something you inherently want people to do or believe in. (Valuing civilian lives, for Uplift.)
          • Negative traits: something that'd compromise the target society's ability to function. (Questioning of authority, general toxicity.)
      • The useful traits should be deeply enmeshed in the core idea's terms, making them difficult to isolate and extricate.
        • Create the illusion that they only makes sense within the ideology, so that if a specific behaviour it encourages is effective and beneficial, this effectively confirms the entirety of the ideology. All-or-nothing.
        • Example: "Hair-washing is useful because it renews your connection with the Water God."
      • Infect the target society with the ideology, spreading it through entertainment or other vectors.
        • Precaution: "Leaf is, of course, safe from this sort of attack, since the WoF isn't just an ideology."
    • Unrelated: Destroying your boardgame set just to ensure you talk to Kei was uncalled-for.
  • Schedule a Games Night. Invite all Leaf Summoners (except Oro). Suggest they invite their Summons too.
    • Ensure the Condors and the Pangolins don't see each other.
    • Provide chakra water, if Noburi's willing.

  • Jutsu wish-list:
    • Spacetime and dimensionalism.
    • Uplift: Constructing walls and roads, cleaning water, preserving food.
    • Anything related to mental fortitude.
    • Related to "nature chakra":
      • Hazou knows: Innate to summons, dangerous to drain, but empowers chakra beasts
    • Those that were most useful to previous summoners.
(Took the list from @Paperclipped's plan. @faflec: does Hazuo, in fact, know that nature chakra is a thing? I distinctly remember retcons away from that.)

Not explicitly, but I maintain that Hazou knows. Noburi's statement on Jiraiya telling him about the Swamp of Death's nature chakra was retcon'd. The only other mentions of nature chakra not in internal dialogue never involved Hazou directly (Pantsa to Keiko, Jiraiya and Toads/Kages), but the details of the Pantsa-Keiko conversation would likely have been repeated to Hazou at some point, especially when Hazou was doing his own Summoning training. I faflec'd eaglejarl on the topic of knowing if nature chakra even existed, which I submit as further evidence that Hazou knows of its existence.

It was clever, yes. It just that EJ only knows English whereas Vel has an interest in linguistics and works as a fucking Japanese translator.

Blah blah blah. The Japanese aren't some mysterious aliens kidnapping and probing rednecks out of their pickup trucks while shouting "buzz buzz" and wearing cheap Halloween costumes. That an omniglobal audience can make immediate sense of attempts to the contrary is hardly a surprise in human civilization's third (yes, it's debatable. Fight me.) millennia.

I'm going to assert that it's actually humanity's 13th millennia.

I have two gut feeling reactions to the ideology plan:
  • Ami: do you think so little of me that I haven't thought of something like this? And if I'm the one putting in the elbow grease, I think I should be the one to decide what it encourages.
  • Asuma: interesting, but when you spread it to our enemies could you make it undermine societal function instead of support it? Thanks.
I agree that this is a powerful tool but I have a hard time seeing it working out as we intend, so I'm not sure if this is a good idea the way things currently are.

Counter-suggestion: co-opt the Church of Youth. It's already well-established and gained official co-indoctrination rights from the Most Youthful Hokage, and we have credible claim to understanding Youth on a deep level. It will take some of our time, but if we sit down with Lee for some chitchat on the finer points of Youth we can try and guide the ideology towards Uplift. I have a feeling that for Lee Youth is a philosophy more felt than reasoned, and that leaves it hard for others to understand what it's all about, so we can use the topic of helping resolve that problem to sit down and make Youth Uplift in all but name.

edit: to clarify on the levels of deception here, I think there's actually surprisingly little. Historically, Hazou has been called Youthful by Akane for following Uplift, and much of what the Church of Youth teaches is already Uplift-compatible. I feel like Hazou could admit straight-up that he's hoping to spread Uplift through Youth and Lee might not even have a problem with it. At the end of the day, there's enough overlap between Uplift and Youth that it makes perfect sense for Hazou to take an interest in the Church of Youth and share insights from his time developing Uplift.

Well, if you want to play that game it's closer to the 25th depending upon how you define "human". Still, "the point at which triticum mutated to facilitate beer-making" is probably as good a set point as any even if it neglects people figuring out how to harvest potatoes, maize, rice, etc.

  • Ami:
    • I don't think memetic engineering is all that intuitive, especially not in a low-information society, and this is a relatively specific implementation of this non-intuitive idea. And if she did think of it... well, okay?
    • I'm assuming she'll use it for her own purposes, yes. But I think we have enough leverage and enough reasons to trust her that it's fine:
      • This is a relatively low-speed/energy tool, not one she can immediately flip the board with, and our goals seem aligned enough, in short- and medium-term.
      • Unless I missed something, the plan is still for her to join Leaf and for us to get her FOOMing. This arrangement includes her agreeing to a number of conditions; unless we pick those really poorly, they should ensure she isn't a real long-term threat to us. Either because she'll commit not to be, or because we'll limit her growth.
      • Generally speaking, she seems to be working with us in good faith, and I'm inclined to trust her more after her latest Mist rant. It might've been a performance, it might all be a performance, but I think we have enough evidence, at this point, that it shouldn't be considered likely.
  • Asuma: Undermining societies is already one of my suggested implementations, so I'm fine with that.
