Lands have value, so the hag sells the lands and get their money back, even if it's shitty land.

She studied him for a moment, chewing on her cheek as she visibly decided whether to have this fight right now. "We truly are loyal, Haru. Hazō is loyal. Yes, he said a couple of things that were taken badly but he didn't mean them the way they were heard. It was a mistake."

How did one mistakenly threaten to talk the evil Sannin into assassinating the Hokage? Also, which was better—a Clan Head stupid and/or careless enough to accidentally threaten treason (twice!) or one who was so amoral that he was willing to do it voluntarily and then cover his sins with a claim of stupidity and obliviousness?

"Of course," he said. "Just a mistake. I'm sure that Lord Jiraiya and Lord Hyūga simply misinterpreted an honest comment. Twice."
Wait, how does Haru know about the conversation with Naruto about Orochimaru taking over Hiashi?

Hazou might have told the rest of his clanmates about it just because he felt obligated to
And the comment on Lord Jiraiya making a mistake? That sounds like the Kabuto incident being counted as treason, but then that would leave 3 incidents of treason (Kabuto incident, Hiashi incident, Akatsuki incident) that Haru should be able to reference, not 2.

Aw man, looks like our boy Haru was not up to the task of being an expert detective

Au contrair...

"The thing I don't get," he said, "is where did the Hagoromo get all their scrip?"

Akane blinked. "What?"

"Where did they get it? They didn't get it from us and it was a huge amount. Were they collecting it a few coins at a time? That would have taken months, and not a few of them. None of the merchants I've spoken to said anything about Hagoromo buying scrip from them. In fact, a couple of them made a point about the Hagoromo refusing to accept scrip as change. Given all that, where did they get it?"

Noir Detective Haru cracked this case wide open. Unfortunately for us, all of our ideas were wrong. This wasn't some weird inside job with Hyuga and Hagomoro being buddy buddy to take us down. No! This was an isolated attack from the Hagomoro because they hate us and they found a weakness in our scrip. Specifically, lack of cryptographic controls. This wasn't a market crash where we overextended ourselves; no, this was a forgery job! The Hagomoro never even touched our scrip; they merely lied to the merchants across leaf and stole goods and services with a claim that we would pay them back for it. The reason the purchases didn't make sense is because they were bought with nothing but lies and the latest model of a likely legally purchased copy of the Nara Inkjet 1200 (for the purposes of printing religious texts, of course) and a bulk order from the same paper supplier we used.

As a result of this, the Hyuga buying up our scrip seems even less likely to be a part of the attack - instead, I propose that this was the start of the Hyuga reaching out to try and repair relations between our two clans by investing in our weird fiscal plan, and as a result, the Hagomoro inadvertently harmed the Hyuga as well. Friendly fire is a bitch, and now we have ammo to drive a wedge between the two clans.

I'm unclear on the timing needed, but I think we need to order Haru to report to us that he thinks our idea is dumb, Hazo can make the connection that our idea was wrong, and then put Haru in charge of working with the Hyuga to help build up a relationship again; maybe he should start spending some time with Hinata so that we can avoid that headache, while still forming a bond between our clans, while rewarding him (in the manner of all who are successful at their assigned tasks, by being given more/larger tasks) and showing that we can learn, but only if he'll be honest with us.

[X] Noir Detective Haru gets a promotion
- Set up a meeting with Haru and Hazo.
- Order Haru to tell us not only the facts but his opinions on the case
- Treat all prior "suggestions" we made to him as though they were made by [someone low status]
- It was a forgery job! I know all about that because of the iron nerve.
- Maybe Hazo could offer tips on how to spot forgeries?
- There might not be hard evidence of this, and that's okay
- Acknowledge that Hyuga investment could have been starting to build a relationship, rather than an attack
- Ask Haru to open communications with Hyuga
- Maybe see if they have a large warehouse full of now worthless paper with our name on it somewhere
- Also figure out some way to increase Haru's control over his life as a reward

Akane's cheeks burst into flames. "We aren't doing anything!"

"Really? Because that's not what the estate is saying."

"What are you talking about?"

He rubbed his jaw, wondering if he really wanted to walk this road. "The two of you have been in and out of his hospital room. A lot, and staying for long periods. Yesterday, Yamanaka went in with an overrobe but she wasn't wearing it when she left."
They grow up so fast.

She stared him down for another eternal second, then snorted and shook her head. "No, Hazō is not trying to start a romantic relationship with Hinata. He's said that he finds being around her exhausting and he worries about the security implications."
*sad tree noises*

So it sounds like the Hyuga may have bought the scrip, then transferred it to the Hagoromo for them to use. The question then is how do we find evidence as to whether such a transfer happened?

That's simple. Try to buy some of it back from the Hyuga. If I'm right, and the Hyuga were investing in us rather than conspiring against us, then they shouldn't have much to sell back.

(Also, if they still have a lot of it, then they'll want to help us get back on our feet so that their investment isn't a complete loss)

Good idea!

If the Hyuga Clan bought a large stockpile of scrip but didn't spend it (as our Yakuza evidence suggests), they a) gave it away to other people *cough* Hagoromo *cough* or b) are still holding it. We can simply point out this to Asuma and he can order the Hyuga to turn over their scrip to the Tower for reasonable rates, if they can't do it it becomes much more likely the transfer occurred.

The issue with this is that even assuming the transfer occurred we still need to link the Hagoromo spending the scrip to the bank run: specifically, we need to find a link between where the Hagoromo spent scrip to people who were present at the Bank Run. Like, say...the:
And oh wait, guess what:
"Yeah," Haru said. "And the day of the bank run the Hags made some major purchases. They went to six different goldsmiths and bought out most of their stock. They went to three different Yakuza gambling halls and exchanged scrip for ryō. They placed some huge orders for various kinds of goods, and they bought a big stretch of land near the border with Noodle."

Hazō frowned. "Why Noodle?"

Akane shrugged. "We're looking to see if they approached anyone else about other land. What they bought is a snip off of a larger holding held by the Amori. I'm trying to track down what the nature of the land is and why the Amori were willing to sell it."
Hey look, a bunch of merchants bought goods from the Hagoromo, and the Amori Clan got a bunch of scrip from the Hagoromo. And it's very likely that they immediately went off to us all at once!

May want to consider the wording of this. It took Haru a long time to believe that Hazou is genuine about Uplift, so it'll take Haru a long time to believe that we genuinely care about him and that Hazou won't just kick him out for being rude --which I'd argue is a fair concern, given our (completely justified) response to the Hagoromo outing Keiko to the public.

Unfortunately, given that Haru is of the opinion that "talk is cheap," there's not much we can go to really ease Haru's concerns there, except to be consistent and constant in our approval and acceptance of him. Like Haru admitted to the Yakuza, we've accepted him into our found family, done our best to help him acclimate, and expressed a genuine affection/respect for Haru as a person. Time and consistency will allow Haru to "settle in" to this new dynamic and convince him that it's not as fragile as he fears.

I'd suggest replacing it with something akin to "What can we do for you/give to you in return?" Because, aside from all the aforementioned reasons, gifting Haru with increased agency after he's done something useful seems to give off the wrong impression (namely, that Haru's freedom exists only as his utility does). It might be viable if you include disclaimers and tonal contexts within the action plan, along with Hazou framing it all via CCnJ, but even that might be insufficient (again, Haru is unimpressed with words, and only actions really seem to get through to him).

(side note: I apologize if this post reads as curt or rude, I promise that wasn't my intent. I just have a headache that seems determined to become a migraine)

[X] Action Plan: An Attempt To Realign The Timeline
Word Count: <300
  • Isan team:
    • Clear chakra monsters, find allies among Isan's outcasts, as previously discussed.
      • Ask Yuno, Takahashi who to approach.
    • Ask Takahashi about the Yoshida/their clan head; if he thinks it's wise, request a meeting.
      • Are there other clans he recommends we talk to?
  • Bank run investigation:
    • Request a thorough, in-person update on the status of the investigation. Listen carefully.
    • Obviously the Hagomoro are involved. How'd they get all that scrip without buying any from us?
      • Forgery?
        • Does the quantity of scrip collected match the quantity issued?
          • If not, is the difference approximately the amount the Hags spent?
        • How easily forged is scrip? Do we have evidence the Hagoromo had the materials to do so?
      • Joint venture with the Hyuga purchasing scrip and delivering it to the Hagoromo to spend?
        • Motive: Low-risk financial opportunity, alliance with another conservative clan?
        • Does the amount of scrip the Hyuga bought match what the Hagoromo spent?
        • Do the Hyuga still have their scrip? (Can we ask Asuma to have them turn it over if so?)
        • Have the Hyuga also been spreading rumours?
    • Other questions:
      • Which businesses stopped accepting scrip - any commonalities?
      • Who was prominent in the bank run crowd? (Insisted on ryo, agitated, was loud, was conspicuously quiet?)
        • Look at clan, informal alliance, industry links along with geographic patterns (locations of businesses/people).
      • How did the merchants that sold to the Hagoromo use their scrip?
      • Do we have Tower records of scrip collection?
      • Update on the Amori?

i buy this. so, what concrete proof would we need to give Asuma in order to make sure he puts a stop to their ploting and we can take our money back?

[] Action Plan: An Attempt To Realign The Timeline

it depends, do the QMs want to keep the two things separate?

Have we considered having Hazou meet Hinata and asking her why she bought so much scrip? If she knows about it, she can either explain herself and allay suspicion, or dodge the question and invite suspicion. If Hinata doesn't know that the Hyuga bought up a ton of scrip, then she has some clan subordinates acting without her knowledge, which would makes sense give the she is likely to be much less conservative than her clan is used to.

It's also a less hostile action than asking Asuma to force the Hyuga into turning over their financials. If Hinata is trying to make amends, why burn that bridge while it's still being constructed? Ask Hinata first, and depending on the answer, we then go to Asuma. Having the Hokage order a clan around should be a last resort. Consider adding this to the plan please?
