Consider how powerful of an aura Yagura had, and what that means.
He didn't, actually. At least, not according to my reading, although I haven't asked @Velorien if that was the intent.

But not the people who live in the US xor celebrate it. Screw them.
It is literally impossible to live in the US and not celebrate Thanksgiving. If nothing else, you either get the day off or you get time and a half for working.

Do neurodivergent people have a different attitude to them?
I have encountered one that claimed to have made his three (exactly three) friends by handing out surveys. Before that I had only encountered such things in media (books/TV) to make fun of autist characters in a non-malicious way.

  • En route, Hazou ponders what Jiraiya had to say.
    • Well, Keiko is... Keiko!
    • Jiraiya, Gai, Tsunade... even Momma. None of them seem like they ever compromise on who they are. They just are.
    • Maybe we need to just be more... Hazou.
    • Break through obstacles standing in the way of fixing this world, and to hell with the cost?
    • And if we break ourselves? We'll just have to fix that too.
    • Let's start by winning everything : the tournament, gambling, and at creating international relationships.
    • Time to get serious.
  • In Mist:
    • Yakuza gambling
      • Meet with the Oyabun (or his Lieutenant) regarding the gambling con.
      • Exchange pleasantries, be courteous and polite.
      • Proposition: Cheat rich foreign nobles out of their money in your gambling dens over the next few days.
      • Proposed split: 50% to us, 50% to you.
        • If this is unreasonable, we bow to your wisdom on the matter.
        • But this would have to remain profitable to be worth our mutual time investment...
        • What do you say?
      • We are always thinking of our friends in the chivalrous organization.
      • Extend gratitude, leave gracefully.
    • Pre-Tournament:
      • Speak with the non-Leaf ninja present.
      • Introduce yourself and apologize for the earbusting from Event 5.
      • To make it up to you: a friendly spar, some dinner or maybe drinks after the first round of matches...
        • Win or lose, we'd like to get to know them all better.
        • Historically, people have enjoyed our afterparties (Look at Doigama).
      • Be warm, friendly and inviting but not overly familiar.
      • Body language: Confident, relaxed, with a dash of "deadly apex predator" mixed in.
  • In case of Hana:
    • Assess the temperature. Act accordingly.
    • Apology: Hug her. You're sorry. We are happy to see her (safe).
    • Hazou is mindful of Hana's potential biases (where he is concerned).
Stream of consciousness reactions:

Overall: Seems perfectly reasonable, albeit a bit dull.

I'm not really sure what to do with the "think about stuff" scene, but I can probably make something work -- moment of determination type thing, I suppose. If not, I can always offscreen it.

Hmm. Actually... That could be a nice bit of mental badassery. Hm. Maybe that's more interesting than I first thought.

Talking with Oyabun... Bleh. Trying to be consistent with @Velorien 's characterization makes him tough to write. Bah. Stupid characterization-talented co-author. Bah. Have to talk with the other QMs to figure out what his reactions will be.

Reactions to other contestants: I suppose this has to be in there. Seems a reasonable approach. Might be fun showing their reactions to the party idea.

Overall: Not a bad plan. Not super exciting, but solid, well thought out, and easy to write for.

Hey, thanks for giving it the once over. Its much appreciated!

I'm not really sure what I could do to spice it up a bit. Probably a combination of my imagination failing me and us being in the nebulous period of time in between "Arriving at Mist" and "About to punch some fools in the tournament."

I'll mull it over today, see what I can do.

Avast ye, have some critique.

Maybe we need to just be more... Hazou.

I weep for the world.

Proposed split: 50% to us, 50% to you.
  • If this is unreasonable, we bow to your wisdom on the matter.
  • But this would have to remain profitable to be worth our mutual time investment...
  • What do you say?

The whole yakuza portion seems pretty subservient to me and ripe to be exploited by the social specced Oyabun.

Specifically, there is no contingency to what counts as worthwhile investment. If I was the Oyabun I would ask for favors instead of a pittance of money that the gambling would earn me and the plan leaves it up to Hazou to decide if he would agree or not. And since he is woefully outmatched by the social stats of the Oyabun he might agree to very unfavorable terms unless you tell him in the plan not to. (Noburi's or Keiko's presence won't change all that much; they are better than Hazou at socials but still not on the same level as the Oyabun).

Introduce yourself and apologize for the earbusting from Event 5.

Fair.

To make it up to you: a friendly spar, some dinner or maybe drinks after the first round of matches...

This, on the other hand, is not. No one in their right mind will agree to a spar just before the tournament. This is a mine field of OPSEC breaches by showing everyone what you can do, in addition to "accidental injuries" here and there. If we want to socialize before the matches at least run this through by Hazou/Keiko so we can come up with a defense to probing questions about our abilities - which they are bound to me many of. I read this part as us just trying to socialize without any ulterior motives but I don't think the other competitors will see it that way.

Apology: Hug her. You're sorry. We are happy to see her (safe).

What are we sorry for? She was out of line and Hazou should have accepted this much while he did his self reflection in a previous update. Lets not waver now - and I say that as a person who ultimately wants Hazou to get along with Hana. Telling her we are happy to see her is fine though.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail What exactly is Hazō's view of Aunt Ren?
She could have taken Mum back at any time, but she didn't. For as long as he's been alive, that's made her the enemy, as much as the rest of the Kurosawa.

Now he's realising that politics is complicated, and that being powerful comes with its own set of chains. There might have been good reasons, in Aunt Ren's eyes, why she couldn't take Mum back even if she wanted to. None of them could have been good enough, because she should have made whatever sacrifices were necessary in order to put an end to her own sister's suffering, but they do humanise her. She's less a fairy-tale monster and more a woman who failed to help her family in their time of need, and kept failing them for over a decade. Such behaviour deserves contempt more than loathing.

If Mum decides to give her a second chance, maybe Hazō will as well--at least if it ever occurs to Aunt Ren that when you hurt your family, you start by apologising from the heart, not by handing out ambassadorial posts and strengthening international blood ties.

Removed the friendly spar bit. That might not be a good look.

Mulling over everything else.

@MMKII Any chance we can check with Jiraiya about the Yakuza plan? I know we got his permission to do stuff but we should make sure our stuff'll fly.

I want to edit some stuff when I return fro my mountainous exile.

On the docket:

  • Jiraiya:
    • Run Yakuza plan by him beforehand
    • Pitch idea: Kage Game Night?

Yakuza gambling
  • Meet with the Oyabun (or his Lieutenant) regarding the gambling con.
  • Exchange pleasantries, be courteous and polite.

@MMKII Any chance we can check with Jiraiya about the Yakuza plan? I know we got his permission to do stuff but we should make sure our stuff'll fly.

@faflec this plan doesn't have any content we didn't ask him about already. We didn't just get permission, we also stated exactly what we were planning to do and he okayed it. I'd prefer not to waste his time here.

"Speaking of the tournament, do we know anything about it?" Hazō asked, jumping into the silence that had fallen as everyone tried to figure out what to say next. "I mean, rules, tactics, anything like that? Also, are we allowed to bet on it? Because I was thinking maybe we could work with the Yakuza, give them fifty percent of the take and fleece all the foreigners. Also, I wanted to sell them some of those chakra-detection seals, if that's okay. And—"

"Hold it," Jiraiya said, raising a hand to cut off the flow of questions. "No, you can't sell them the seals. Those things are too useful to be passing out, especially to enemy nations. Yes, feel free to gut anyone you like at the gambling table and you should definitely work with the yaks on that. Yes, you can bet on the tournament. As to the tournament itself, we won't know the specific rules until we get there."

"Oh," Hazō said, disappointed.

I don't really like the apologizing to momma bit, since I don't really think what happened was something to apologize for, but other than that I agree with it.

I will frame the Hana thing to be less forgiving in a bit.

I was thinking more on the details of the Yakuza conversation (which wasn't covered with Jiraiya so much) as well as the practice we did on actual fleecing in previous plans.

If I remember right, until now Hazou has never expressed his displeasure/disagreement to Hana regarding her actions.

If there any other reason for this other than Players wanting to do other things than navigating the quagmire that is socials?

This is, incidentally, why I disagree vehemently with ignoring social stuff in favor of pursuing our goals.
