Multiple people seem to disagree with the apologizing to Hana part. Maybe what we actually need is more plans to decide between. And I know saying this and then not making an alternative plan is kind of hypocritical, but I'm going out tonight in less than an hour and still need to prepare.

If we apologize to Hana, I think the subtext of that is that we're sorry we couldn't keep her in line. That, in turn, makes us sound like we're the one supposed to be more mature and insightful, in contrast with Hana being, you know, momma.

This could go either way. It'd definitely prick Hana's motherly pride, but depending on how she's feeling when we say it it could end up as "Hazou's all grown up and I need to treat him more like one" (which is good since it means she's less likely to poke around in our business on our behalf and get herself in trouble again)... or it could just exacerbate the pain and loss she feels from Mari taking Hazou away from her, since it really drives home how much of Hazou's growth she missed. Maybe both.

All told, I'm okay with Hazou feeling sorry in general when and if he talks with Hana, because it's obvious that there's a lot to feel sorrow about, but it's too risky to let it sound like we're apologizing for, in essence, not being responsible and attentive enough to keep a petulant child out of trouble.

As far as alternate plans go, I would actually be fine with just letting @eaglejarl write what he wants.

Next update is somewhat of a bridge chapter so I don't really have anything I would want Hazou to do and it would give the QMs some freedom to add plot hooks or introduce some other aspects relevant to the tournament they otherwise couldn't.

Hows that sound?

  • En route, Hazou ponders what Jiraiya had to say.
    • Well, Keiko is... Keiko!
    • Jiraiya, Gai, Tsunade... even Momma. None of them seem like they ever compromise on who they are. They just are.
    • Maybe we need to just be more... Hazou.
    • Break through obstacles standing in the way of fixing this world, and to hell with the cost?
    • And if we break ourselves? We'll just have to fix that too.
    • Let's start by winning everything : the tournament, gambling, and at creating international relationships.
    • Time to get serious.
  • In Mist:
    • Yakuza gambling
      • Meet with the Oyabun (or his Lieutenant) regarding the gambling con.
      • Exchange pleasantries, be courteous and polite.
      • Proposition: Cheat rich foreign nobles out of their money in your gambling dens over the next few days.
      • Proposed split: 50% to us, 50% to you.
        • If this is unreasonable, we bow to your wisdom on the matter.
        • But this would have to remain profitable to be worth our mutual time investment...
        • What do you say?
      • We are always thinking of our friends in the chivalrous organization.
      • Extend gratitude, leave gracefully.
    • Pre-Tournament:
      • Speak with the non-Leaf ninja present.
      • Introduce yourself and apologize for the earbusting from Event 5.
      • To make it up to you: some dinner or maybe drinks after the first round of matches...
        • Win or lose, we'd like to get to know them all better.
        • Historically, people have enjoyed our afterparties (Look at Doigama).
      • Be warm, friendly and inviting but not overly familiar.
      • Body language: Confident, relaxed, with a dash of "deadly apex predator" mixed in.
  • In case of Hana:
    • Assess the temperature. Act accordingly.
    • Hug her. We love you, but please dont put us in a position like that again.
    • Hazou is mindful of Hana's potential biases.

I thought the feeling of the world being divided into lines which both Hazou and Mari described in his presence was the aura? And it was strong enough to scare Mari enough to agree to the Swamp defection out of fear.
I dont think Hazou has ever been experienced this? I think we made some offhand comment about "Kages rioping our souls out with a glance." Or something that refers to the Yagura thing referentially.

When the Mizukage spoke at public assemblies, his voice was high and cold, piercing you wherever you stood. It divided the world into straight lines of narrow steel, a razor-sharp net with no escape. There were only tools and traitors, right and wrong, sacrifice and selfishness, law and transgression. His charisma made you want to believe in a simple world where all you had to do was be one of those straight lines, and everything would be peaceful and good and right, forever. His reputation made you terrified of falling into the gaps between them, an endlessly deep void from which there was no way back.
That's Hazou's POV, in case it wasn't clear.

Thats just 1984 Propaganda though, it appears?

Where Mari was concerned it was the Mari-Yagura reprimand interaction where Mari got drowned under an ocean of despair

What Mari was talking about was the Mari-Yagura reprimand interaction where Mari got drowned under an ocean of despair

I recall Mari describing Yagura's aura in similar terms, but my memory could be playing tricks on me. I'll look for the exact quote later.

It would make sense, as well. As far as we know, Yagura absolutely believed in his own ideology and was determined enough to make a major hidden village into a vehicle of its implementation. That sounds like grounds for a powerful aura to me.

Hm...

I can't help but feel like the "apologize for the earbusting" is going to come off a little bit like "oh, I'm sorry for kicking your ass so hard you can't hear straight" or "oh, I'm sorry that I used Daddy's toys to really hurt you"; it might be a little better to be more naked about our willingness to get to know them instead of acting as though our kicking their ass is something to be apologetic for.

Tbf I'm scared of Hana but I'm also aware that a contingency section that doesn't immediately try to pull a Hana on her is, strictly speaking, better than nothing.

My atittude on it is mostly "Sorry for bursting your eardrums and making it difficult for you to hear for a week."

I do think thats a thing we should do. It gives us an excuse to invite them to a hangout under guise of "Making ammends." or what have you.
