Maybe we should ask Anko rather than take up Tsunade's time.
I just realized. Since visiting us, she's had no less than three upstart brats trying to take up her time or get things from her. What's her daily life look like?

No wonder she's so cranky.
On the other hand, at least Noburi's doing something useful by her mind, and Hazou's not taking up a bunch of her time.

Similarly, at any point where we find we're stuck in the mud on research, well either we have time to spare or not. If we have time to spare, the answer is "Wait for Sealing to level a bit." or "Spend more time on it to the exclusion of all else, maybe do some all nighters for like a week." or something similar.
Your Sealing is currently 20, meaning an Aspect Bonus of +3. If you spend 3 days preparing and then infuse on the 4th day you will get +6 on your roll. When you bump your Sealing to 30 (AB of +4) you'll be able to prep for 4 days and infuse on the 5th in order to get +8. Spend a few all-nighters to give yourself a Mild physical and a Mild mental consequence (both of which wear off in about 24 hours) before doing your roll and you get another +2.

You can get additional CMs for working on seals where you already know related items, meaning that climbing a tech tree will be easier than doing random unrelated projects.

You can burn FP to invoke Aspects like "Kagome-Approved Sealing Lab".

Sealing is not meant to be a fast process, but it is one that can be pretty certain as long as you can take your time and control what you work on.

So, does having someone helping you with the research (per providing aspects, etc.) do anything for how long/how effective doing the "research and rest" thing takes? Could you use their aspect bonus instead if they were helping you the whole time?
If another sealmaster is helping you full-time then they may spend a Fate Point to invoke an Aspect and contribute their Aspect bonus to your research roll. You may not benefit from more than one such bonus -- the nature of sealing is such that the difficulties of coordination rapidly outweigh the advantages.

Note that Kagome spending his FP to help Hazou is mutually exclusive to Hazou spending his own FP to invoke Aspects directly related to Kagome's help ("Kagome Looking Over My Shoulder"), but not exclusive to Hazou spending his FP to invoke related but independent Aspects ("Kagome-Certified Sealing Lab"). Also, you do not get to spend other people's FP.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail

I just figured out how you could get it to happen: you remember that spar we arranged with Asuma? You could write that scene and have his beloved nephew tag along to watch.
Ooooh.

*sigh*

Fiiiiiiiiiiine.

How do we beat Keiko then? (Given that we don't know the jutsu available to either, of course).
Noburi has been very cagey about what jutsu he's learned.

I'm not sure if Keiko has shared her jutsu or not. We'll let you know once the other 2 QMs are around.

Hazō is getting an earth-element ranged attack jutsu. We know the fluff but the crunch is still under discussion.

Not to be... ungrateful (or arrogant), but keep in mind that Hazou already has macerators, so the crunch would need to be something... uh, relevant, for it to be worth his time to level.

Also, if it's a Jutsu vs Athletics kind of thing, then there's no reason for us to level it at all right now. We don't have anywhere near enough XP to get such a thing to the mid 30's, which is lowest point at which it would be relevant in the tournament.

E: For the record, it's 437.5XP to get an earth jutsu to from 0 to 30 right now (after accounting for discounts between levels 1-10).

Three months later, after acquiring the Condor scroll.

Dear Uncle,

I am writing to you today in hopes of establishing a mutually beneficial relationship.I hope the enclosed seals and related research notes prove to be a worthy gesture of good faith, and a useful one at that. I am contacting you without the knowledge of my clanmates, and so I beg your utmost discretion on the matter and it goes without saying that I would be eternally grateful for it.

I was hoping to probe your current opinion on world politics, and of the political situation on the Seventh Path. Likewise, I was hoping to ask for some advice on Biosealing. I don't have any but the most cursory of educations as far as biology and medicine are concerned, and I'm a bit lost on where to start developing the needed background. Do you have any pointers? I have attached my Rat-Twitch Seal as an example of my current progress, woefully minor though it may be.

As a final request, I have been hoping to expand my collection of poisons, venoms and drugs for use in various experiments, seals, and weapons. Jiraiya and Tsunade have both been particularly unhelpful in this (damn clearance)and it has been driving me up a wall for months.

I eagerly await your reply.

Your Dearest Nephew,

Hazou

The reply came two days later written in a glistening purple ink.

Dearest Nephew,

Jiraiya undoubtedly would have you killed for doing this behind his back. Luckily, I have no interest in reporting this to him.

Enclosed are a number of things you requested. I took the liberty of adding suggestions and some criticism to your designs. While reading, keep in mind that I am a harsh critic, and that overall I found most of these to be quite excellent.

After pulling some strings I have gotten the Snake clan to agree to grant asylum to your feathery friends. Interesting Space-Time jutsu, they have. Perhaps we can converse in the Seventh Path next time. I suspect I have some birthday presents to make up for, but your presence and polite conversation would be present enough for me.

Sincerely,

Orochimaru

P.S. Congratulations on acquiring the Sarutobi child as an apprentice. May you be unto him as his grandfather was unto the three of us.

P.P.S. Apologies for the ink smears.

I'll clean this up and polish it when I'm not on mobile and/or drunk.

"Hazou. In here. Now."

"WhateveritwasIdidn'tdoi-"

"You and Kagome were playing 'The Floor is Lava' tag in the commercial district, and you broke out explosives."

"Explosives solve everything, and they were just training tags. I won, by the way."

"More than enough to kill a civilian."

"We know our explosives, sir. There was no danger. The civilians even enjoyed the show."

Jiraiya, paused, rubbed his temples, and replied, "remind me to design some sort of remedial Leaf Law Orientation course later. For the moment, what do you think happens to a shinobi who kills a civilian inside Konoha?"

"Errr... Formal inquiry and lots of paperwor-"

"-they die. At the Hokage's own personal hands. Full stop. There are no levels of mitigation nor any presumption of innocence. Shinobi are protectors. Accidents can happen between us, but our entire purpose is to be so far above in power, control, and awareness that it is impossible for collateral damage to loyal civilians to be the result of anything less than depraved indifference. This is foundational law. Absolutely nobody outside of the victim's next of kin can grant clemency or pardon, and even that is heavily constrained to prevent coercion. This is the only situation where a random civilian has a legal advantage over even a clan head."

"That can't possibly be feasible in practice-"

"The rules are looser outside the walls or during a council-approved time of war, but other than that the only exceptions must be granted by the Hokage himself and registered with the council in advance. No delegations. There are a lot of powers like that. The council likes it that way and it's a large part of why peacetime Hokage are notoriously buried in paperwork. Even when I was spymaster I knew that on the rare occasion that I needed to conduct an emergency operation inside the walls I was risking my life on the hope that some civilian wouldn't happen to be standing behind exactly the wrong wall at exactly the wrong time when the kunai started flying. Most Leaf missing-nin are ninja who found themselves facing such a trial and weren't certain they could prove their innocence. I watched Sarutobi kill ninja we both knew for a fact were innocent because the alternative was politically impossible."

"Why would the clans go along with that?"

"Think about it for a moment."

"...those bastards..."

"Clan codes of conduct aren't just pretentiousness. They're self-preservation. You will never find a clan ninja who behaves like Mitarashi because they would have long since had one of their numerous vulnerabilities exploited to frame them, if their clan head didn't just execute them for the good of everybody. This brings us to your behavior..."

I mean, it's fine if it's not useful for the exams though. I clarified that earlier, and the techniques are meant to be general-use. My concern is that it won't be that much better than macerators; consider how far we could improve those if we spent three months improving them instead of the new technique.

Hm. Did we ever get actual LOS-blocking seals (e.g., smoke bombs) set up for the tournament? It could be real handy if we can skew the earth jutsu by covering its use by blocking LOS.

Of course, macerators only have enough range to hit people in the same zone. A proper ranged jutsu would be a nice thing to have. Even if it's still pretty worthless below level 30.

I am almost positive we have included some variation on blindfighting/smokebombs in at least a few of the plans where "Everything else was done offscreen." Including testing our own if we couldnt find some.

Incorrect. Macerators have up to Range: 1 (though they don't get a bonus to what you roll at that range)... but if it takes three months to get that technique to a useful level, and we spent three months on macerators, I'm pretty sure we could get them to give a significant amount more range/bonus dice.

I'm pretty sure that with three months of research we could have the beginnings of proper sealtech blunderbusses.

Good news, everyone! As my previous chapter wasn't evil enough, @eaglejarl has kindly consented to let me write the Sunday update as well. I hope you are looking forward to it as much as I am.

Um, this probably isn't the best time to ask, but everyone who voted for my plan is aware that the Akane section is essentially about manipulating (on our end, Hazou is perfectly sincere) her into revealing her plan by poking at her vulnerabilities, right? Well, about that, I'm not exactly sure if I would've written it the way I did if this was Wednesday instead of Saturday, if you catch my drift.

I'm sure everything will be fine though! For some definitions of "fine", anyway...

I would love to table this discussion for the time being until I have something thats mostly nitpick-proof.

Chiefly, I havent done that yet because I was almost certain we would vote to go easy on her or something, and then all the effort would be wasted. If we commit to not throwing in the towel, I will give it a good faith effort.

Like all the plotting for Event 5 Round 2. I drew a lot of diagrams and thought real hard for that one, and what do I get? Shikamaru blowing a raspberry right in my face, thats what! :p

I'll promise not to vote in favor of going easy on Keiko, if there's a reasonable alternative. I don't know that I'll contribute much to your combat plan, but I won't oppose it. My opinion on this topic was always that I don't particularly prefer either result, and so I was going to focus my energy on more important matters. Like the Ami date.

I'd summarized that this was the plan, yes.
