...It's possible I could be misremembering? Let me check.
e:
When Keiko did show up, she was very clearly shaken. The boys took one look and sprang up to lay out a pair of domes.

"The proctor escorted me past the Mori compound," she said hollowly once they'd lit up the interior of the Earth Dome. "My sister was waiting there. She… she acted like everything was fine. Like she was happy to see me. She said she was proud that I had grown strong enough to be entered into the Exams. That she had been worried I would be unable to keep my-- my promise to come home."

Keiko had slowly curled in on herself, back up against the dome, arms wrapping around her knees, looking for all the world like she was trying to become one of her pangolins. It struck Hazou how small she actually was, for all her terrifying skill in combat.

She continued staring into the distance over the tops of her knees, seeing nothing. "She was so excited that I had maneuvered my way back so I could rejoin the clan."

Her head dropped to her chest, her face hidden behind her limbs now. "I could not make myself tell her the truth. But she realized it. I hesitated, showed insufficient enthusiasm. She did not speak to me like a sister again, after that."

Noburi and Hazou looked between Keiko and one another. "Keiko," Noburi began, "I'm so sorry you're being made to confront this tonight."

"Did you check that it was really Ami?" asked Hazou.

"It was her!" Keiko shouted, not looking up, surprising both her teammates. "I know it was."

"Okay, I believe you," Hazou said, doing his best to sound reassuring.

"That's some good news, though," Noburi offered. "She's still alive and safe. She still wants you two to be a part of each others' lives."

Hazou nodded, before realizing Keiko wouldn't be able to see him with her face buried in her lap and stopping. "I think it makes little sense to assume that her sudden change in demeanor was caused by negative emotion rather than surprise. Given some time to process the reality of the situation, I expect she will come to terms with the new status quo and feel comfortable reaching out to you again."

The whole team was silent for a minute. Then, slowly, wordlessly, without looking up, Keiko stretched out her hands toward her siblings. Hesitantly, Hazou reached out to take her hand. She flinched when they made contact, and she pulled her arms back around herself, shaking her head.

"No, sorry, stupid," she mumbled.

They sat together until the dome dissolved around them.
Not quite crying, but...

e2: Oh, right, now I remember why I thought she was crying: I was.

I can already see the outline of the scene in my head, and it sounds like a great deal of fun. For me.

I'm all for optimizing for QM happiness whenever possible. However, I'd like to respectfully point out that you getting to write the fun scene of Hazou talking to Ami is contingent on us not dying or getting thrown out of Mist before the current event is over with. Just thought I'd point that out.

Well played. Just remember that even QMs can't go against the merciless deity that is simulationism.

Forging bonds with Mist is a good idea. Trying it with our former clans seems wise.

But we are bad at politics. Remember that time we tried politics, and we failed so bad they tried to kill us? Remember how that is the sum total of our political experience?

Politics isn't our strength. Munchkining is our strength.

The positive alliances we have built usually followed a similar pattern. Find someone who is trustworthy and very powerful. Start making one off trades and establishing trust. Eventually offer them the world on a plate, while demanding the moon on a stick. Enjoy our lunar lollipop while they handle any political considerations that arise from our fresh alliance.

Jiraiya and the Pangolins worked this way. Hopefully the Yakuza will too.

This is how we should try to form bonds with Mist.

You see we have the privilege of escaping death by a hangnail's width from time to time but a posteri it looks like we rained death, destruction and chaotic subterfuge upon many of our enemies.

Are we the Harry Dresden of MfD?

That is an excellent analogy and makes me hungry.

*shrieks in Hazou*

I FORGOT ABOUT THE CLIQUE

THE FUCKING CLIQUE THAT WE COULD HAVE JOINED

AHHHHHHHHHHH
Don't worry, if they're all DQed it won't matter.
e2:
We're like book 6 Harry, enough to have a reputation but not to the extent where we show up and even the bigger guys start itching for their guns.
Growth mindset.

I meant literally. I mean, Shikigami's group got wiped, Liberator Army got wiped, an entire squad of Mountain-nin got wiped...

I know that Minami got killed but that's pretty tame by our standards.

Hmmm... going by our track record... looking at the plan...

1. Put a bunch of ninja from rival villages in a high paranoia situation.
2. Turn it into a literal pressure cooker, the heat making them irritable.
3. Add aerosolized booze to make them drunk, further clouding judgement.

Yup. This has all the makings of an international incident. My money is on a clan heir from Cloud killing another clan heir from Rock, thus sparking a war between the two nations. Not wishing to enter a war in their time of weakness, Mist joins in alliance with Leaf and Sand, with the three nations and their allies declaring themselves neutral in the conflict. Shikaku observes that this is beneficial, as it buys a period of peace for our burgeoning alliance to build up our forces and economies, while Rock and Cloud destroy themselves in another fruitless war. As such, it is all part of Hazou's grand master plan to show that cooperation is superior to conflict, by providing a case study in which the warring nations suffer while the cooperating nations grow.

I lowkey want out next character's bloodline to be Hazou in their head because of a sealing failure.

It'd be smarter for their bloodline to be something like Speak with Dead, only with different limitations (must know the person in life, person doesn't have to answer...). That way we could justify getting "Hazou" from a missing-nin who wants to know how he managed to join Leaf.

I think we need to use the wiki more. There are two things that I think would be very valuable:
  1. An official list of all our lies, secrets, and cover stories.
  2. A basic checklist to help us evaluate plans
I already got started on the second one: Plan Checklist

It would be cool if we could have somewhere to add stuff to to do in the next plan.

Only if Hazou then munchkins his way into their head on a more permanent basis.

We should start building profiles of characters and possible countermeasures in an extremely over the top Batmanesque fashion

In my sig there is a google doc link with freely edittable character dossiers.

e: If you wanted to transfer that to the wiki, it'd be a good start.

For instance, when we ran to Snow.

THAT WAS BECAUSE IT WAS HAZOU'S BIRTHDAY AND HE WANTED TO SEE THE SNOW.

And then we left because it was Mari's Noburi's birthday and she didn't want to see the snow Mari convinced him to gtfo of snow.

I keep having to point this out, but it had absolutely nothing to do with anything else.

The fact that we decided to travel to the farthest reaches of uninhabited lands by the most expedient and untraceable methods possible was because we wanted to see exotic locales and we were very concerned about border crossings.

The fact that we invented a new technique to obliterate all traces of evidence from our campsites via aerial bombardment and immediately adopted the practice as S.O.P was because we wanted to improve our OPSEC.

NOTHING ELSE.

...

But especially not because of Zabuza.
