[X] Action Plan: Hunt as Second Raptor

I'm not 100% on the general "let Nara lead, JK LOL I LED!" strategy for the reasons outlined by @Briefvoice , but if the QMs want to let it fly then sure, no reason to waste a perfectly good plan.

I do think it'd be perfectly cool both narratively and in-game for the QMs to wholesale steal idea from failed plans for Nara's eventual plan. In-game Hazou goes "gosh darn it that was in my plan and I could have gotten credit for it!", out of game we do the same thing, and it saves spoons all around.

My biggest problem with Hunt Like Raptors Without Leading is that you're essentially voting to refuse the leadership and then run everyone else over with a plan when you don't have the command which you literally just ceded to Shikamaru.

Done first, it sounds like you're trying to backseat driver after quite literally insisting the other guy drive, which is a terrible idea. Done second, and you're being a contributing member of the suprasquad and anyone questioning your right to do so after Shikamaru himself just vouched for your abilities is pretty clearly wrong in the eyes of the majority.

My only concern was tactical leadership, not strategy.

We saw how Hazō completely misinterpret the tactical situation before the retcon.

Guys, I will say again it's ridiculous to come up with a complicated plan and present it as mere advice. That's crap and everyone will recognize it as crap. Either stand behind the plan or don't put forth a plan, but don't put forth a plan and pretend you don't want to take charge. It makes Hazou look ridiculous.

What is everybody's thoughts on how willing we should be to spend fate points in the upcoming conflict?

Revised to change who is on Set-Up and give some more flexibility to their roles. They are the Blocks/Maneuvers/Attack squad who are doing whatever best softens up the enemy for team Strikers to take the enemy out. Sometimes this might be just a punch, sometimes not.

[X] Action Plan: Hunt like Raptors

  • Tactics:
    • Team is divided up into Setup, Strikers, Ranged, and C&C (note that assignments below are subject to discussion if team members feel that Hazou has misjudged or does not understand their abilities, and GMs should adjust for reasonable NPC arguments)

      • Setup: Noburi, Haru, and Choji. Their assignment is to look for opportunities to set up the enemy to be taken out by the Strikers, stop the enemy from fleeing, or to join in with Strikers as makes sense.
        • GMs should make judgement calls based on nature of enemy. If there's a weapons-user, it might be worthwhile to do a Maneuver such as Disarm to place an Aspect such as "Disarmed". If there is a Wakahisa around, Team Setup would attack his Barrel. Or maybe something to stomp out a jutsu. If they create an Aspect with a Maneuver, pass the free tag to team Strikers.
        • If the enemy looks like they want to flee, a Team Set-Up member would do a Block to hold them in place.
        • If it's just a boring ninja using boring taijutsu and Team Set-up sees no opportunity to do a helpful Maneuver, maybe they just do a straight-up attack.
        • In the event one of them is injured or out of position, Hazou can slide up to become the third Setup.
          • In the event we are facing multiple teams and can no longer easily outnumber opponents, Shikamaru in C&C can make the judgment call to have the Setup turn into Strikers and concentrate on making sure all enemies are covered.
      • Strikers: Hazou, Neji, Lee, and Akane. Their assignment is to get in close and hit their opponents with taijutsu to do damage.
      • Ranged: Keiko, Tenten. Their assignment is to use goo bombs and thrown weapons against enemies who have some sort of jutsu or ability allowing them to stay out of melee or to lock down excess opponents if we're fighting multiple teams or a team with clones or something of that sort.
      • C&C: Shikamaru, Ino, Sakura. Their assignment is to maintain greater battlefield awareness from the rear and use their special jutsu against the most dangerous opponents such as those who have a damaging aura that makes it impossible to engage in up close combat, some sort of overwhelming jutsu that can hit multiple opponents, and that sort of thing. Shikamaru directs traffic, and Sakura takes responsibility for defending Ino's unconscious body if she uses her possession jutsu.
        • Make sure Sakura has some air dome seals for deployment on C&C group in an emergency.

The question is what it achieves.

In a world where Hazou leads:
Let's say all goes perfectly. We beat up all the other ninja and take all of their stuff and then roll over the finish line with 100+ seals each and no real injuries on our side: huzzah. Let's say it goes mediocre: we beat up a fair number of other ninja and take some of their stuff and then limp over the finish line with 90+ seals each and a few minor injuries on our side: huzzah. Let's say it all goes absolutely horribly: we get our asses handed to us and the bad ninja take our stuff and then we crawl over the finish line with 0+ seals each and maybe a fatality or a maiming or two on our side: boo.

Now let's say that Nara leads:
I think it fair to assume that things will go at least mediocre in this world. Both in-game and narratively there's no reason to think that Nara will lead us to utter disaster. So the floor is pegged at mediocre. Note that I said "huzzah" for both the perfect and mediocre outcomes: this because in the scale of things we (or at least I) give a damn about they're comparable outcomes. Hazou loses some reputation from not being the Fearless Leader that leads Leaf to Glory, gains a bit back for not having an ego, and we all go about our regularly scheduled Chunin Exams without death/maiming.

There is no guarantee that Nara won't deliver the absolutely horrible outcome because there is no way to control for the luck of the dice. The floor is not pegged at mediocre. Nara will deliver a competent plan that nevertheless can't account for many factors beyond his control.

Furthermore, Nara will likely fail to leverage Glue Bombs because he has not seen them in action. His plan may be inferior to ours and be more likely to deliver bad results and more vulnerable to the luck of the dice.

Yeah, I kinda found it funny that this guy took "No matter how things go with the ambush, you're not going to be blamed" as "we will never experience the Abysmal Failure event". Like, seriously?

Eh, part of it's "Nara's da best and can't make mistakes" part of it's dirty meta-level reasoning about the QM's being unwilling to kill us for letting the genius take the reins. I'm also more taking it as "Nara is Nara, therefore no Abysmal Failure" than concluding it from the "you won't be blamed".
E: As an example, if this was Neji insisting on being in command and the choice was between letting him and taking charge ourselves, I wouldn't be going "oh well the prompt says we won't be blamed, so things can only go well if we let Neji lead!"

  • The retcon'd chapter 162 had Nara sit still while a battle was raging, resulting in the teams being struck by lightning at range.
  • The QMs are 100% willing to kill us for insufficient planning, which is "letting the genius take the reins". We lost Minami that way. Also, by saying that you fuck us in that regard.
  • The Nara clan is not a clan of god-minds, seriously.
I cannot believe I'm having this conversation. Fuckity NO.

I feel that we'd have a much more robust discussion about the risk vs. rewards given a probabilistic choice-spread, rather than diving straight down the rabbit-hole for option B.
You make some good points. But I'm in the mood for rabbit.

Don't you know our greatest weakness is also our greatest strength? Nara should be the one who assume tactical leadership.
If our greatest weakness is our greatest strength, then Neji should be the leader.

rocks back and forth, gibbering madly
So everything's normal with you, then?
