I don't expect the thread to ever do anything that isn't what is explicitly put right in front of them. I don't think we will ever complete a long term goal that is not assigned to us

Whatever man. It's not like being on the mission changes anything. We don't do anything ever.

I agree with this sentiment. It's been over a year and I can't say I've ever seen the hivemind actively pursue a goal without any leads beforehand. Everything we've done has had some prompting in some way from plot hooks or small details we've found over the course of the simulation. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; trying to ignore all of our pressing concerns in favor of something we would have a very hard time justifying in character isn't easy to pull off. As others have pointed out we have had a ton of responsibility dumped on us as well since we joined Leaf: we traded absolute freedom for a new place to call home. This mission is taking forever OOC though and I am tempted to speed it up in favor of advancing the plot to something more palatable to us (the two major reasons why I haven't been contributing as much as I used to is that I know that we basically have to follow the mission and following all of the discussion just to vote to follow the mission is too large of a time sink to me at the moment).

However, there is a third option: we can split the difference. While we complete this now-extended mission like the good little murder-wizards we aspire to be we still have a ton of time spent running/sky-walking to each of our destinations. That's a ton of time Hazou has to think about anything IC and now since Hazou has more agency to pick and choose ideas he wants to follow we can bounce 'random' ideas off of him to see how he responds to them before bringing them up to his teammates. We can also prompt our teammates to think about their own mid to long term projects as well. For example:

Hazou knows that Keiko has been for all intents and purposes engaged with the Nara as a way to further Jiraiya's and the Nara's political ambitions. Hazou also knows that Jiraiya, even as the Hokage, cannot afford to piss off the clans too much as evidenced by Jiraiya's rant about controlling the Minami. Since Hazou is also now an adopted child of Jiraiya and Jiraiya can use all of the political capital he can get, Hazou may be asked/told by Jiraiya to accept a political pairing from his clan head for the good of his new clan. If this were to happen, how would he feel about it and how would he approach this topic with his current girlfriend?

For another teammate, we could have Hazou ask Akane to tell him what, if anything, she has since learned with her Mechanical Aptitude skill and if she is able to do anything new with it. Then we can discreetly discuss with her what she thinks of Zeppelins or even starting a completely mundane Industrial Revolution in Leaf (provided Hazou has learned enough from all of those books we had him read back in Leaf). Noburi can be prompted about his ideas for medical research and what he's thinking he wants to use Hazou's favor for. Keiko can be quizzed about her upcoming engagement (unless that's classified as clan secrets/agenda so we can't speak about it in front of Minami) or her assessment of her current summons and how they can be better optimized for the next engagement. We can inquire about our defenses and what we can do to help with Kagome since we are now land-bound. Do we still use MEW for structures if we are trying even harder not to leave a trace than usual? As for Minami we can ask what her plans are for the future since I honestly have no idea what she plans to do after this mission is over. The more we know about how she will (or she may choose not to) use Kagome's skills the better we can plan around and prepare for it.

We could always try to make a little cash to fund our future projects

At this point I think it would be better to simply bounce money-making ideas off of our teammates to see what they think will work in universe. I have to admit I'm rather intrigued by how Keiko would appraise my old ideas for setting up a Merchant Empire and whether or not we could still do while we are employed as 'official' Leaf ninja. We probably don't have the time for it but we might be able to set up a an ice-producing company in Leaf if given the chance.

I will point out that the capture of Goda might perhaps seem just a wee bit more relevant on the grand stage of events. ;P

EDIT:

Interesting question. Do you ask?
Wait a second, that information, the timing...
Holy shit. That information must have given Leaf everything it needed for a major offensive, because Todoroki Shrine is basically as far away as Jiraiya can send us without seeming unreasonable.

Also, it's likely that they push their wagon along even without a horse because chakra beasts will kill them if they don't have any sort of defense at all, including the chakra insects.

Let me pull back on 'current situation' at end of update. We've arrived at a farmhouse with one of our contacts a couple of hours after dark and are preparing to bed down for the night. She asked for help escorting her husband and son home, but Minami refused. Intent appears to be that the team will sleep the night in front of the fire and then continue in the morning. So, options are:

1. Don't try to do anything here, sleep unless on guard duty, and continue in the morning.
UPSIDE: Minimum effort, maximum speed.
DOWNSIDE: Not very interesting or ambitious.

2. Try to convince Minami to reconsider helping the farmers, whether by doing the escort mission after all or killing the chakra beast or something else. "Ordered to stay covert," is a little weaksauce. Who is going to be looking here in the middle of nowhere?
UPSIDE: It's proactive. It'll make the characters feel better about doing something good.
DOWNSIDE: It means going back out into the rain and not resting as much. (Is that the real reason Minami refused?) Also, arguing with Minami about every decision reduces cred with her a little each time Hazou does it.

3. Spend a couple of hours talking with the farm lady before going to sleep. It might be interesting (and instructive) to know how Jiraiya recruited someone like her, what she gets out of it, and what sort of information she passes back that is worth passing.
UPSIDE: It's something to do. We learn more about how spy networks actually work. Hazou's character is affected by reaching out and making human contact with someone outside the crazy ninja world.
DOWNSIDE: Strictly speaking, it's a minor OPSEC violation to be so chatty. Also, we may be investing update word count in something that many players just don't give that much of a shit about, if there really is a desire to just get the endless courier work done with and get back to the real action.

I think more pressing would be the reaction this woman inspired in us when we first got here. Sans sob story her response to the phrase set us on edge. Her being replaced or turned is a very real possibility.
Yep, I second the suspicion about the woman. I certainly think we should have a tight guard tonight and eat our own food.

It occurs to me that storage scrolls are, to some extent, already civilian-usable -- they require ninjas to seal the objects up, but if I'm not mistaken, tearing them doesn't risk sealing failure and releases the items, right?

[X] Action Plan: Slay the Beast

- I second a check on her chakra though, pushing a cart to town does not seem credulous.
- Do any of the mist ninjas have a method to seep out mist rather then explosive seal? or puddle of water I guess.

It'd be pretty simple to arrange a water spill given that we're in close contact.

Be aware that Noburi's past sensing attempts have involved either being immersed in the same water as the target, or physically holding a wet hand against them for a period of time.

So we'll have Noburi seduce the old lady, take a bath with her and check her chakra.

Really don't see the problem.

Most likely the old lady is NOT a ninja, nor is she compromised. If anything, it's more likely that she will be compromised by enemies spying on her and her family.

This is all a figment of your paranoid imagination, just like the cute murder-girl who went and visited us. Turn out that it was a LOAD OF NOTHING.

So, please don't do anything stupid or dumb without first clearing it with Minami if the lady is even a problem at all.

So, she was a LITTLE late to the door, and you call that suspicious! Hell, sometime it takes me a "little while" to go the door. An infiltrator wouldn't be a LITTLE late?

Also, no rolls was also triggered and Mari's kids are trained to detect deception.

Probably? I mean, if their transport beasts were killed I don't see how they were supposed to bring the wagon with them.

...

...

Oh god did the contract get turned fuck fuck fuck

Let's see. Efficiency's sake. So you're going to get new draft animals only and get NOTHING? You might as well bring your wagon with you so you can load up while in town.

Remember, transportation really sucks in this era. There are no paved roads, and everything takes forever to get around unless you are a ninja.

Bear in mind that if the characters failed a Deception roll, you might not know about it.

As a GM, I regularly make my players make Perception or equivalent rolls while travelling or camping, whether there is actually something to notice or not. Otherwise, knowing that a roll has to be made is in itself a spoiler. (This is also why @eaglejarl does his "rolls if rolls were made" thing - I tend to take the opposite approach).

He didn't ask WHY they brought the wagon, he asked HOW they brought it. Specifically, how they were pulling it without draft animals. Depending on the size of the wagon, it would take a rather large effort for two civilians to pull it down a trail and could easily make it take significantly longer to get there.

But they might have to do that regardless as they may need to bring trade goods to buy new horses.

There's also the implication that they traveled in the wagon, instead of with it:
The farm wife's eyes had gone huge at the casual display of jutsu. "Could y'find m'husband, escort him the rest of the way?" she asked hopefully. "He and the boy are traveling in the wagon; it's real solid, probably keep the critters off. Be a lot safer with ninja, though. And the wagon's pretty likely to get stuck in the mud what with all this rain."
Seriously. This entire situation smells of "trap". Personal opinion is that the contact's family was kidnapped and that she's to try and get Jiraiya's contacts out searching for her family, at which point a force of ninja ambushes us.

They might have borrowed the neighbors' horses. Personal opinion is to do nothing.

Being too paranoid can be just as dangerous. See Kagome.
