On the topic of "future creativity", I am rather against giving yet more of our ideas to Leaf unless we're getting a major benefit out of it. We need aces up our sleeves. The loss of aerial supremacy (at least until we can research KRS and Aerial Mobility Seal) was devastating, and we'll need to lay a few golden eggs purely for ourselves before we start selling any.

@Twofold Suggestions:
  • Rewards:
    • I do not like the idea of prioritizing burning a(nother) favor on Noburi's medical training, since I believe the chances of us needing to use it now rather than later is not that high. Since this probably isn't clear, I mean that we can get medical training in Iron and the absence of us having advanced medical abilities in the interim (while in Leaf and traveling to Iron) isn't that big a deal. I do not expect Jiraiya to give a mission to us so soon (@eaglejarl @Velorien Does our team think we'll get a mission after Akane's better??) and my expected post-Konoha plan takes us to Iron, and Hidden Whirlpools.
    • I also do not like trading a favor for information about our families. I just...what does this change? We don't have the manpower to rescue our mother for a long time, and we shouldn't contact her for extraction because a) we don't have the ability; and b) she's not going missing-nin for us if she hasn't already. We need to get our ducks in order before we do this, and THAT means we need to spend our favors on increasing our skills, combat or otherwise.
    • Free passes are good, but I don't think it'll be permanent (and honestly it really shouldn't be). Akane's probably coming with us, and even if she was in Konoha, Jiraiya would argue that if we wanted to see her we could arrange a meeting via pangolin instead of getting 100% passes through Fire. THAT, I can justify.
    • MechApt speciality is good. I like this. I am, however, worried about what speciality we want, and IIRC that's why we haven't gotten her to MechApt 15 yet. Still not sure what she should go into.
    • If we're looking into seal trading or related stuff, how about asking for a basic paralysis seal? We have no 'parent' seal that would work for these and they'd certainly be useful in the missions we've been sent on. Sensory or communication seals take priority, but I don't think we'll get the latter because of how absurdly overpowered it could become.
    • If we can't get Hiding in Mist through Jiraiya or his contacts, ask if we can get a strong Water Release-based defense (like Water Wall) or the Water Prison technique. Or burn the favor on something more useful, IDK. Maybe ask suggestions for a strong utility-focused Water Release technique, like something that buffs our TacMove by having us ride the wave?
    • Nintaijutsu should be put lower on the score than a ranged Earth Release technique. Don't forget how much trouble we had with Arikada due to our lack of non-boomsplat ranged abilities. Having some sort of Rock Spitting technique, or a ranged Earth Fist would be nice (but still lesser to a tunneling jutsu or earth sensory jutsu).
  • Considering leaving temporarily (i.e., while Akane is in surgery):
    • Our needs include:
      • Keeping Kagome from going insane from not having seals in the middle of a hostile country.
      • Getting Noburi his barrel(s).
      • Doing seal research.
      • Doing training.
      • Getting Noburi medical training (if we don't burn another favor, see above).
    • We cannot do any of the above in Konoha to the extent that we would want, due to the need to keep our skills secret.
    • If we leave for the Land of Iron (for training) we can do all these things.
    • Cons:
      • Jiraiya will probably look down upon us for appearing to abandon Akane.
      • We may need to burn a favor to leave and come back.
      • We probably won't be back by the time Akane wakes up.

Hmmmn.

Given how everyone apparently wants peace anyways, why don't we trick the world into it?

We cut a deal with each of the elemental nations (without them knowing about the rest) about creating a fake 'Hidden Heaven'. A massive Big Lie, which will let them force a complete ceasefire for at least much of a generation.

Hidden Heaven would be a group that has, supposedly, been living in the clouds using seals for untold generations. After 1,000 years they have returned their gaze upon the elemental nations, and have found them wanting.

Then we have every Kage pretend that Hidden Heaven has decimated their ninja somehow and so everyone has sworn fealty to them now.

Of course, at first, every kage believes themselves to be the sole ally/creator of this false Hidden Heaven. Then once everything is actually implemented, it becomes clear to them that they've all allied, and so have been conned into an alliance between all the elemental nations, creating peace.

You seem to be operating under the assumption that once the existential threat goes away the nations won't go back to jockeying for a better position.
Basically you're proposing Code Geass season 2 and I'm talking about season 3 which I proposed but was refused for being too depressing

I was thinking about creating near-perfect storage containers by using a time-delayed storage seal to release the contents into a 'sealed' (in the sense of as few seams as possible and no latch) box or sphere.
That's also possible with the recently mentioned ARS seal, remotely triggering the seal, but you could also use the storage scroll repeatedly (?) and have a way to adjust ballast or lighter-than-air anti-ballast/lift material in aircraft. Also, maybe scuba tanks.

Is it possible to activate the implosion seal from inside a container (it doesn't have to be a completely sealed container) designed to protect the implosion seal from being destroyed in activation?

Jutsu from J suggestion:
Some sort of communication stuff, like mid-range signaling? This isn't likely, but it would be a really useful tool for our ability to coordinate.

Oooh, what if we design a kind of chakra heliograph? We can make beams of chakra with tripwire seals, so we see how far we can make that beam stretch with reliable signal. This probably isn't feasible for real use, since ninja can move so fast, and chakra beasts or enemy combatants can easily destroy a signaling station. Ah well.

True, I just kinda figure that it's often better to be polite about things like this, but I suppose at this point that would be a departure from our modus operandi.

With Jiraya, I feel like it is better to speak our mind and be open about our grievances. If we were talking to Hokage, we should definitely opt for a more polite approach.

Maybe we hid it in Iron immediately after Jiraiya told us our mission since we knew we wouldn't need it on hand, and success in this mission means being detained by Konoha? Maybe we gave it to Jiraiya then since we're already entrusting our lives to him?

This sounds exactly like something a bunch of savvy ninjas did.

I'd suggest asking Jiraiya to send someone to retrieve a barrel from Iron (I believe we have one stashed in the woods somewhere, and our medical instructor has one). Probably get the one from our medical instructor, keep the woods one safe for now.

That sounds sensible to me.

[X] Action Plan: In the Shadow of Leaf

Goals
  1. Do as we are told and keep Jiraya happy
  2. Check up on Akane
  3. Agree on rewards
  4. Start training
  5. Don't cause an incident
Methods
  • Continue the discussion with Jiraya
    • About the high order thing we gave to him out of the goodness of our heart
      • How likely is it that we are going to get killed to make sure that we don't spread it around?
        • How are you going to ensure that doesn't happen?
        • Is the Hokage likely to do that? If not, are his aides/confidants/minions/rivals going to act independently?
        • What about the people you are going to give it to?
      • Is this going to happen every time we come up with a new stuff? What are you going to give us to incentivize further creativity?
    • Why did J want us in Leaf and how long do we actually have to rest before are getting stabbed again?
    • Does he know other people who are up to changing the world
      • Preferably the sort of people J has a hard time interacting with because of who he is or who they are?
  • Haggle for rewards
    • Most of these rewards are centered around making us stronger and better assets, so it's against Jiraya's interests to be stingy here
    • Hazou's suggested list of rewards, ordered by priority (naturally, everyone gets to veto the parts that affect them)
      1. Medical training for Nobby
        • Konoha has the best mednin around, this should be an easy thing to do
        • It is very important since it keeps us alive and opens new angles of attack
      2. Information on our families in Mist
        • Is mom still in active duty? Prisoner? Alive?
        • Whatever the others want to know
      3. Free Pass to cross Fire borders
        • This should come packaged with Akane's reinstatement
        • Akane is not much of a carrot if we can't come to see her
      4. MechApt specialization for Akane
        • She is a Konoha-nin now, why are we using favors gettin her trained?
        • Shouldn't you be paying us for training her up to high chuunin?
        • Don't decide this until Akane wakes up and has had her say
        • She needs something to pass the time
        • Get a tutor and reading materials
      5. New Sealcraft for Kagome and Hazou
        • We showed you ours, now show us yours!
        • There's a very good chance we will make improvements, we can kick those back at you
        • Priority on what Kagome deems necessary
        • Hazou specific sealcraft requests:
          • Wide approach (Hazou's preferred option)
            • Multiple low-to-med utility stuff for ninja operatives
            • Examples in order of priority
              1. Communication devices
              2. Advanced alarm seals
              3. SCBA
              4. Night vision
              5. Eye/ear protection
              6. Sound muffling seals
          • Deep approach
            • One heavy specialization
            • Everything Jiraya has on storage scrolls
      6. Mist generation jutsu for Nobby and Mari
        • You do have water ninjutsu specialists in Fire, right?
        • Or just Mari if Nobby is busy
      7. Earth Jutsu for Hazou
        • Didn't you agree to this last time?
        • Hazou has room for two 10 dice jutsu
        • Some ideas, use training plan vote to decide
          • Tunneling jutsu
            • Personal combat tunneling
            • Tunnel building for out of combat
          • Sensory jutsu (Tremor Sense, See Through Stone, etc.)
          • Nintaijutsu (Doomu, Earth Fist etc.)
          • Ranged attack with a roll tied to another skill or attribute
      8. An up-to-date bingo book or comparable intel
        • I can't believe we didn't ask for this last time
      9. New ninja gear and essentials, our old ones are rather contaminated
  • Talk to Nobby and Keiko about changing our main Diplomancer
    • Talk to Nobby first
      • Our reasoning
        • High level Diplomacy is really hard, and Nobby is already pursuing two other hard subjects (Medicine, Water Jutsu)
        • Keiko will have to learn to maneuver social situations with the pangolins anyway
        • Vampiric Dew and keeping out of sight go so well together
          • "I am not blinded by the fog of war, Hazou. I am the fog of war. A team mysteriously vanishes in the forest, and you think that of me? No, I am the one who makes them vanish!"
        • It would be nice if our only medic wouldn't be the most obvious target to attack in the party
      • Our emotions
        • Nobby is an incredible ninja and has nothing to prove to anyone
        • He is obviously the most socially adept out of the genin, but that goes for his chakra control and potential as a ninjutsu specialist too
        • It is his call, job designation won't work in the long run if people are not 100% behind them
    • If Nobby agreed, talk to Keiko
      • Figure out with Nobby how to sell the idea to Keiko
        1. It sucks for the moment, but it'll synergize really well with her pangolins.
        2. Some of her best friends are giant insectivore armored tanks. Even when she's not talking to the pangolins directly better social skills will allow her to capitalize on the fear and respect that inspires.
        3. Her bloodline is pretty kickass, but social skills are its big failure mode. If she can get good at diplomacy she can start using them together to be even better at analysis.
          1. She might be able to go full psychohistory in the future.
        4. We've got her back and know she can do this if she wants to
  • Meet our minders
    • Try to get along with them
    • Use them for social practice
      • Keiko
        • Try to build bridges and make nice with them (Diplomacy)
      • Hazou
        • Create an extra youthful personality, and see how long it takes them to see through it (Deception)
          • When they do, swap to a muted personality that is really depressed and negative
            • When they call us out on that, apologize and tell them that we needed the practice
    • Ask to spar with them a bit to assess their skills to cultivate our bonds of YOUTH!
      • Keep Nobby water ninjutsu a secret, only have Hazou and Keiko do sparring
      • Maybe do team spars if that seems fairer, or more interesting?
      • Only use standard skills and academy jutsu
      • No chakra boosting or combat styles
    • Give our minders advice on how to interact with Kagome
      • Don't interact with Kagome
      • If you do, do it from far away
      • No sudden movements
      • Don't seem suspicious
      • Don't ask any questions
  • Check on Akane
    • Bring flowers
    • Tell her about Jiraya's unilateral decision to reinstate her
    • Don't push for a decision about sticking with us
      • It is a big question, and her recuperation will take time, she has time
    • Discuss rewards with her (see rewards section)
  • Ask Jiraya to deliver Nobby's spare barrel
    1. He can't train properly without one, and he is not building on while in Leaf
    2. Ask for the one stored in the medical clinic at Iron
    3. Ask for the broken barrel too (It was a good barrel!)
    4. See if he can't find a backpack or similar disguise for it. Nothing to change it's functionality, just some way to cover it up and hide what it is.
  • Communicate Hazou's feelings to Keiko
    1. Use clear communication no jutsu.
    2. "Keiko, I'm trying to be helpful and yes that means stating the obvious sometimes. It's not meant to imply that you haven't thought of these things, just that I think it's important."
    3. "I would appreciate if you stop being snippy just because I mention some step that you think is blindingly obvious."
    4. "Mind you, correcting my mistakes, and overruling me when you think I'm wrong is important and neccesary. I just feel hurt by the personal jabs you make when I am trying to use a mode of communication that requires trust and mutual goodwill."
  • Go out and explore Konoha
    • Akane
      • Get better
      • If able, read MechApt specialization books and get tutored
    • Noburi
      • Med-nin Intern Quest
    • Mari
      • Socialize with the older Leaf ninjas
      • Ply her trade
      • Plow some jounin
      • You know, Mari stuff
    • Kagome
      • Learn new Sealing stuff!
      • Preferably somewhere close to the team and no other people around
      • I'm sure they have a library an old grumpy man we can poke with a stick somewhere
      • I doubt Kagome is the first insane sealmaster they have entertained
    • Hazou + Keiko (The New Team Talky)
      • "Keiko! We are going to go out and make friends!"
      • Talk to civilians and low level ninjas
        • Learn about Konoha, its people, and the relationship between ninjas and civilians
        • Start with our minders
        • Some tour options
          1. Hazou is craving ramen. (The hivemind wills it)
            1. Those hole in the places/tiny pop-up stands are the best.
          2. Take a tour of the historical sights, see what stories Konona like to tell about itself to itself.
            1. War Memorial
              1. If we have a tour guide/minder, ask them about it.
            2. Hokage Monument
              1. If we have a tour guide/minder, ask them about why the monument was created? what should we know about each Hokage.
          3. There are hot springs, I'm sure we could all use a relaxing soak.
            1. Everyone should probably take an extra towel to whip any peeping toms.
            2. Inoue is free to use genjutsu if she wants.
          4. Take a look a weapons shops.
            1. Keiko could use something exotic as a gift to Panchipaama?
            2. Our standard kit could probably use a sharpen and polish.
      • Hit the library
        • If there's no public library, see if we can get our minders to get us access to books we're interested in
        • Get a general idea of what sort of text there are available (or not available)
        • Focus on different topics so you can teach them to other party members after leaving Leaf
        • Hazou's focus
          • Natural laws with an emphasis on mathematics, physics and chakra laws
          • Political philosophy and its history
        • Keiko's focus
          • Law, Konoha specific and international
          • International trade and agreements
            • "We don't want another DMZ incident."
Contingencies
  1. Don't piss off Leaf
    1. Be polite to everyone we meet
    2. Listen to our handlers and follow their instructions to the letter
    3. Don't give the Yamanaka a reason to scan us.
      1. Politely ask, if we are allowed, under what conditions the Yamanaka will scan us so that we might not necessitate that happening. Explain that we have clan reasons for not wanting our brains perused by a new ally.
        1. "We have a variety of mental conditions from bloodlines to paranoia which we believe may cause discomfort or harm to mind reading attempts."
  2. Safety and Security Rules
    1. Politely but firmly insist that we want to wear veils or something similar to obscure our faces from prying eyes. We know it won't be enough to deter someone like a Hyuuga, but it might help in case there are any Mist spies in Leaf passively looking for their missing-nin
    2. Never be in a group of less than two (Except for Mari)
    3. Keep a watch in our rooms even at night
    4. Make sure we all have whatever the local equivalent of white flags are
    5. Try to stay in public areas with a reasonable number of civilians and other ninja
  3. Combat contingencies
    1. White tactics only
    2. Use any panic buttons Jiraiya has given us
    3. Try to leave the city or converge on Jiraiya's office to turn ourselves in. If trying to turn ourselves in, make sure we're waving our white flags.
  4. Assume we are being spied on at all times by multiple hostile parties
  5. Ask for a way to contact J or his trusted agent fast if we get in trouble
    • A panic button: Colored fireworks, sealing based solution, or something quick like that
    • A slower but more covert way: a deadrop, a trusted messenger, preferably something outside Konoha's standard military structure

On our library visit and better education.

Currently the plan has this:
  • Hazou's focus
    • Natural laws with an emphasis on mathematics, physics and chakra laws
    • Political philosophy and its history
  • Keiko's focus
    • Law, Konoha specific and international
    • International trade and agreements
      • "We don't want another DMZ incident."
I copied it from other plans, but on further thought, are "natural laws" really the thing we want here? Doesn't it include lots of other stuff beyond what would understand as math and physics? I think I'll take that out and just leave math and physics there.

Do people have opinions on what are the sort of topics our two brainy team members should focus on? Remember that they have limited time, so the problem is to figure out and decide what are the topics we want to cover right now. Prioritizing would also be good.

I'll address the other posts shortly.

At which point the peace immediately disintegrates because you know Yagura is that petty.
You seem to be operating under the assumption that once the existential threat goes away the nations won't go back to jockeying for a better position.
Basically you're proposing Code Geass season 2 and I'm talking about season 3 which I proposed but was refused for being too depressing
Point. In that case, we have to actually fake the existence of Hidden Heaven.

Which, given how we have to trick several kage, means we have to mostly actually make hidden heaven.

I do not like the idea of prioritizing burning a(nother) favor on Noburi's medical training, since I believe the chances of us needing to use it now rather than later is not that high.

We are absolutely going to see combat sooner rather than later. We need a mednin to patch us up and there plenty of other uses for a medical specialist.

The mednin in Iron is not going to teach Nobby for free either.

I also do not like trading a favor for information about our families.

First step to fixing a problem is figuring out if it is there in the first place. If mom doesn't need saving, we could possibly co-opt her as an asset for something else. Whatever we want to do, we need to get some basic info first.

Also, Hazou misses his mum, knowing that she is alright will do wonders to his stress.

  • MechApt speciality is good. I like this. I am, however, worried about what speciality we want, and IIRC that's why we haven't gotten her to MechApt 15 yet. Still not sure what she should go into.

She already has MechApt 15.

The main options in my mind would be Traps (so we can deal and plant them) or some sort of more crafting based specialty. Not sure what the crafting thing should be.

Nintaijutsu should be put lower on the score than a ranged Earth Release technique. Don't forget how much trouble we had with Arikada due to our lack of non-boomsplat ranged abilities. Having some sort of Rock Spitting technique, or a ranged Earth Fist would be nice (but still lesser to a tunneling jutsu or earth sensory jutsu).

I didn't mean the ordering to matter there, and we have a separate voting thing for that now.

The problem with ranged jutsu is that Hazou doesn't really have the XP to get high dice on any Earth Jutsu. Meaning they won't be much good for attacking, unless they are some sort of super high level exception thingies.

Alright, so I was thinking about how to stop war in the elemental nations if we create Hidden Heaven.

Long term, of course, is general uplift. But what about the short term? How do we stop the villages from still battling while we raise up the peasantry, or maybe (worse) falling apart?

The only thing I can think of right now is some sort of Simulation War Treaty, where (through a mixture of seals and genjutsu) nin fight via VR.

I feel like you're really not considering the incentives of the villages. In the case of an agreement to stick to simulated warfare, everyone has a reason to defect on that agreement and start hurting their enemies for real.

Basically if we're powerful enough to enforce this, we're powerful enough to just order them all to stop fighting/scorching.

On the topic of earth jutsu...

Hazou lacks ranged offensive power. This is a bad thing. A "make stalagmites shoot from the ground" jutsu would cover that weakness.

Swamp of the Underworld would be yet another area debuff. And we can never too many of those. (My inner Team Uplift are yelling a chorus of "MOAR AREA-DENIAL!")

Hiding Like a Mole is something I feel we could make real use of, and have real fun with.

A spiky-earth-armour nintaijutsu would be very helpful for the taijutsu build, provided it isn't so clunky that it impedes movement or roki.

My priority order would go: Hiding Like a Mole, Spiky-Earth-Armour, Swamp of the Underworld, Ranged Stalagmites.

Looking back:

We got screwed over by stealth, then we got our cover blown. Our genins are insufficiently speedy to catch up to the sealmistress.

Our combat is OK, I guess.

Should we prioritize our stealth/deception build then tactical movement next?

Agreed.

The problem is that we are shit at keeping anything secret. We either sell the stuff and get something in return, or wait for them to steal them and get nothing.

Then we should get better at keeping secrets.

Because there's no way to get any kind of advantage when we keep giving away our unique abilities.
Agree on both counts. For now, we need to sell things and get stuff in return, but in the future we need to develop a way to keep our secrets to ourselves (possibly by just becoming really strong, possibly by something clever).

How do we stop the villages from still battling while we raise up the peasantry, or maybe (worse) falling apart?

Ideas (and requirements I see for them):
  1. Destroy the village system, and have something in place to defend villages
    1. Promote ninja wars
    2. Make civilian towns and fields in each nation safe from chakra beasts, but obviously weak to ninja
  2. Do really hard politics as a third party to achieve peace
    1. Requires having things each village wants more than increased protection, safety, power, and land
    2. Alternatively, requires being stronger than any village
  3. Make one village win
    1. Ally with a village (probably Konoha) and wipe out all the other villages
    2. Hope Konoha doesn't fracture after it's success
  4. Evacuate civilians
    1. Build a base somewhere hidden from all ninja, evacuate entire towns to it. Repeat until all civilians are safe. (I assumed this is what people were going for with Hidden Heaven)
My priority order would go: Hiding Like a Mole, Spiky-Earth-Armour, Swamp of the Underworld, Ranged Stalagmites.
To be clear: this is just for Hazou ninjutsu right? I'd agree with this ordering for him, but think being able to make mist is more important.

Looking bad:

We got screwed over by stealth, then we got our cover blown. Our genins are insufficiently speedy to catch up to the sealmistress.

Our combat is OK, I guess.
Yes. Having low stealth has been a problem for us many, many times (Jiraiya finding us, Liberator nin catching us, Hot Springs going murdery, Clan ninja finding us, Arikada and friends spotting our ambush). Many things would be resolved by having it higher. Unfortunately, that's just going to cost loads of XP. I don't think there's really a clever way we can solve that, since clever hiding methods only normally grant 1-3 additional dice.

Well, we're already halfway into bed with them. We might as well run with this.

Use our Airtech to place transmitters all over the elemental nations, and have them go full big brother. From there, winning should be relatively easy.

Our ideal Jutsu for Taijutsu would probably be something like Earth Release: Earth Spear.

Of course getting it doesn't seem easy.

Hm... what if we tried to get a ranged jutsu that scaled with taijutsu? Of the style "punch and rock comes out".

Idea for our merchant network: create a trade route that go from ozu island to tea to fire.

Why? Chocolate. We might find safe haven in the VHITM, and we'll be able to trade within Fire.

Our focus is coming up with tech and logistics so we can rake large quantity of profit transporting chocolate, and making sure that we're not harassed by pirates or ninja navies.
