Thats my hope.

Seems like we actually accidentally Batman'd this shit already, an incredibly rare occurrence, so I really dont want to pass up the "Yeah I have a gadget for this" moment. If it doesn't work, then NBD. If it works, gods that will be cool.
Failing that, we can always use the Minatoseals, instead.

    • Declare (-1 FP): You had made an extra blank for this for some tests you were going to run with Noburi.
    • Otherwise make a blank.
    • Infuse it somewhere in the cave system such that you can tunnel downwards a bit and let it fall over the course of a few hours to where the otters were.
    • The Capacitor Rune shifts massive amounts of environmental chakra towards itself over the course of 3 days. This should keep the gaki busy without killing them. You might want to research this weird chakravore stuff to kill Akatsuki.
    • Maybe wall this off to contain them if they take the bait? Only if Hazou and co think its a smart idea...
  • Blitz the rest of the Cave, staying clear of the Capacitor Rune section.
    • Send Hazou, Kei, Tenten, and Noburi ASAP. Rebalance chakra to leave everyone (except Nobs) at halfish reserves after buffing up.
      • If there's additional chakra, leave SCs behind as chakra batteries, with instructions to monitor their reserves, and dispel themselves the instant they notice any drain.
    • Summon the suicide bombers, travel halfway to the nook, buff up (no PEA), and then sprint through the cleared cave to the Otter creatures. Suicide bomber Summons a bit ahead.
    • MARS chain without Banshees or Strobelights.
    • Attack with physical weapons, not ninjutsu. Noburi should focus on activating MARS'd misterators, redirecting any drain from the Otters by playing tug-of-war, and looking for more chakra shadows.
    • Afterwards, keep exploring and using mist-drain to clear the cave.
I don't get this, you want Hazou to use Earth Jutsu right in front of the chakra beasts that eat jutsu? He's going to get his ass killed. He'd need to use ES to close the nook.

There's no point to blitzing the cave once the chakra beasts have time to unclear it. Might as well wait for Mari at that point.

Finally those combat tactics are for facing the otters, not the rest of the beasts in the cave. There's no reason to use suicide bomber or not to use ninjutsu on the rest of the cave.

We can probably board it up with something else but the point is that they're distracted by the big shiny chakra rune that continuously pumps chakra towards its location to begin with. If we have doubts that they're not going to be distracted by it then the issue is that they aren't going to be distracted by it which is a more critical flaw here IMO.

I'll cut the "close that section off (if Hazou thinks its a good idea)" part if that makes you feel better?

We're not necessarily going to get all of the otters? Just because we see that there's a handful of them here doesn't mean there aren't two dozen elsewhere. I think its more likely that there are going to be more of the chakra-eating monsters around the big pond of ultra chakra dense water, wherever the heck that is.

If there are only two of them then this encounter is trivial for us to solve (send two Pangolins we hate at them). I don't think its going to be that easy, so proceeding as though there will be more of them is ideal. The point isn't "The chakra capacitor rune trivially solves this encounter", its that it ideally keeps some of them away so we can maybe poke at 'em later. Because the chakra eating thing is pretty based if we can replicate it.

Prep a Capacitor Rune

Summon the suicide bombers
Don't need the rest, we don't know how big the cave is, we likely can't blitz the entire thing before buffs expire, we should go back to the original plan.
  • Attack any otter chakravores with physical weapons, not ninjutsu. Noburi should focus on activating MARS'd misterators, redirecting any drain from the Otters by playing tug-of-war, and looking for more chakra shadows.
  • Keep exploring and using mist-drain to clear the cave of any regular beasts. Noburi keeps alert for more chakravores.
Lots of edits suggested.

Yeah implemented a bunch of this, thanks. Here we go:
[X] Action Plan: Mad Science Cave Clearing
Word Count: 300ish

  • Everyone buy up to 6 FP or until they run out of XP
  • Discuss/sanity check/optimize plan with team
  • Otter Creatures
    • Seem to be primarily chakra drainers.
      • Noburi, the double thunk + statue you observed is consistent with a third otter draining Candoru and then transforming to stone from the nature chakra.
      • We could use more Summons as suicide bombers. Kill them with nature chakra. Kagome, any Arachnids that would agree to this? It's extremely unpleasant for the Summon. We need low-cost physically small Summons that follow orders. Rules out most of our Clans.
      • Otters in the desert? That's ecologically unlikely. This could be from someone signing the Otter Scroll and causing a huge mess.
        • Keep an eye out for the Scroll, but the beasts could have migrated here to feed. It is a chakra cave.
      • Kagome do these creature bear resemblance to gaki? They're both devourers.
      • These things seem to eat jutsu, be careful, Noburi especially. Be prepared to yank back any of your chakra they try to drain.
    • Prep a Capacitor Rune
      • Bring the full team to guard Hazou from chakravore attack, have Noburi use mist sensing to detect them turning aggressive. Once the rune is in place, have him use mist-sense to detect if they're interested.

      • Infuse it somewhere in the cave system such that you can tunnel downwards a bit and let it fall over the course of a few hours to where the otters were. Perhaps have an Earth Clone do this with Tunnel Excavation so you aren't at risk.
      • The Capacitor Rune shifts massive amounts of environmental chakra towards itself over the course of 3 days. This should keep the gaki busy without killing them. You might want to research this weird chakravore stuff to kill Akatsuki.
      • Have Noburi use VD via misterators to verify that the monsters are huddled around the capacitor rune feasting away.
    • Continue with previous mist drain plan to clear the cave, staying clear of the Capacitor Rune section.
      • Attack any more otter chakravores with physical weapons, not ninjutsu. Noburi should focus on activating MARS'd misterators, redirecting any drain from the Otters by playing tug-of-war, and looking for more chakra shadows.

      • Pre-conceal rune from Summon, trap it with skyslicers. Place it in the entrance chamber
      • Summon the suicide bombers. Retreat to the mouth of the cave and wait for them to pop. Rebalance chakra.
      • Make backup SCs to leave behind as chakra batteries for the team. Leave everyone at half reserves, this thing seems to be attracted to excess chakra.

Updates to my two plans. Hopefully things should be more clear. I have abandoned word count for the first.

I think actively infusing a rune near the chakravores (within a few meters) is the absolute height of insanity. If they sneak up on us (and they snuck up on Mari and Yuno) they could cause Hazou to fail the infusion.

We do not know a thing about chakra beast research, we cannot safely interact with these things. I highly doubt we'll get anything out of "studying" them. I think we should just kill these things. Not try to pull an Orochimaru without any of the requisite skills

[X] Action Plan: Fuck It We Blitz

I think it's relatively unlikely that a Capacitor Rune will work as bait. Given what Oro said about human chakra being at higher potential than environmental chakra, hence why it can be used to do work, it seems relatively likely that the otter-things won't be massively interested in even large concentrations of environmental chakra. Indeed, they may or may not even have the capacity to sense it; Noburi's Vampiric Dew can't detect environmental chakra. (Oro quote below for reference.)
"Ambient chakra is a mixture of numerous subtypes of chakra, which, apart from human chakra for humans and nature chakra for summons, are currently impossible to interact with, survey, and study. All humans possess an affinity for human chakra, though only ninja are capable of using it effectively."

"So when a ninja uses chakra…" Hazō said.

"They are solely using a single phase of chakra. A human's chakra coils filter human chakra from the ambient mixture – analogous to lifting a stone up to the top of a hill. It creates tension and latent movement. The boulder wishes to roll down the hill and gains speed and power by doing so. Its movement can knock down trees if released correctly. In the same way, filtered chakra within a human's coils can be returned to the ambient mixture in such a way as to produce useful effects. This naturally disproves the explanation provided to you of nature chakra – were it simply a broader set of components from the ambient mixture, it would require less work to separate, and would thus release less energy when used in ninjutsu. Instead, nature chakra releases more energy when used."

It's of course also possible that actually these hypothetically-Preta-path creatures can derive sustenance from even environmental chakra, but in general, I'm not personally very interested in researching them. We already have plausible avenues for anti-Akatsuki weapons, some of which we know work (e.g. Remote Explosion, Landmine, Storm) and others of which we've yet to even prep (e.g. PLTRs, Dragon Roar). I don't think it's really worthwhile to throw a bunch of time and chakra at investigating the things that will kill us if we make even a tiny misstep, without actually having many tools to do the investigation and without even knowing how much it would help if we understood them.

Noburi's Vampiric Dew can't detect environmental chakra.

We see these monsters appear as "voids" that disrupt the ambient "static" Noburi perceives with the Vampiric Dew as some sort of ever present background radiation (given his internal narration). So I would say that its actually quite likely that they eat environmental chakra and it seems like the Vampiric Dew can detect it to some extent (its just not sensitive enough to be a fine grained scientific instrument).

Just pointing that out, other points aside.

Fair. I was thinking of that as Noburi either having some kind of proprioception for areas his bloodline is spread through, or as his perception being slightly noisy (as any detection system is), and that the voids were created by the creatures eating the chakra that makes up the Vampiric Dew's draining/sensing systems, but I can see how it could be taken as evidence that environmental chakra is detectable by Noburi and drained by these creatures.

I share this concern FWIW. Hopefully someone else will point this out if it's unworkable, but this just has bad idea written all over it to me. Why not infuse elsewhere and slowly push it towards them or just draw them to the bait?

Or, uh...use a bunch of MS2/MS3 seals instead? Like, why are we fixated on using the rune over the seal?

Hmm, perhaps there actually is significant value in having a sealmaster with a large and extremely versatile collection of produceable seals be part of missions like this.

This has interesting worldbuilding implications that I'm a fan of…

I'm not really sure they are sneaking up on anyone. They seem fairly sedentary, after all they didn't chase Noburi, but have a relatively long reach with their tendrils.

Only half-joking, but... there are three really dangerous things we know about. It's hard to quantify each, exactly, but there are enemy ninja, esoteric chakra bullshit like living crystals and dragons, and infusion failures that are just rolls on the Will You Survive? table.
The constant and undisputed number four has always been "strong chakra monsters" though. I think it was a radar we were thinking of acquiring. Our first battles, in the Swamp, were against that kind of thing too. Lightning-aura... if I remember correctly, spiderbears?
"Drains-your-soul otter backup" sounds like an interesting ace-in-the-hole, if we manage to capture any such stuff in the future.

(Also, just think about how when we resurrect Jiraiya we can finally confirm to him that yes, Summons are still made of nature chakra when they're on the Human Path)

I agree Hazou should not waste this opportunity to develop anti-Konan and anti-Hidan weaponry by killing all the chakravores. They were able to drain Mari undetected which is an impressive esoteric attack feat. If we develop similar it might even answer Orochimaru and Itachi - Itachi has low reserves and could be drained through the ground via his foot or something.

This might also be an accelerator for Sage Mode since it allows easy access to multiple forms of chakra potentially at the same time - drain a human and a summon simultaneously and you just need to mould it into biphasic chakra.

@Sir Stompy @MMKII Given the toad sages are specialists in this stuff, maybe they'd be interested in studying it? We should have Noburi consult with the Sages, presenting his observations and Hazou's theories - if interested they might be willing to be summoned and support the delve directly, which would massively increase the odds of both a successful capture and of acquiring relevant insights thereof.

Noburi and Panashe escaped and they didn't seem to follow him, so as long as he doesn't get jumped or surrounded we can continue to explore the cave slowly.

"Anyway, the Preta Path is where the gaki come from. Disembodied souls, supposedly...personally I suspect they're just chakra constructs, but it's not my field. They are all hungry, all the time, and they eat different things. The ones that eat the sound of bells or the scent of flowers, no problem. The ones that eat mice, great to have around. The ones that eat your blood right out of your veins without leaving a mark on your skin? Less fine.

And we might have just run into the chakra eating Gaki who are going towards the pool, they might be other variations around.

Jiraiya, not the Kazekage, who is still dead—fought a float of gaki and trapped them in a sealing array in the Hanguri Gulf.
Those were part of Jiraiya's notes, that were then pointed out by Mari to be partially notes for future novels. Still a rune that seals Gaki (maybe just temporary) could work and might be safer.

Itachi - Itachi has low reserves and could be drained through the ground via his foot or something.
No need to drain through his foot, the tendrils are invisible and intangible. Noburi was only able to detect them from the void in his chakra senses. And Itachi is especially vulnerable to them because they can drain through shadow clones.

If folks prefer we do the bait rune up at the cave entrance and hope it does something and thats the only dealbreaker there, that works for me too. @Cariyaga @ProperAttorney @DanZapman what say you?

I've edited the plan to be a bit more flexible on location here (towards the start of the cave in a safer spot). I think a Loony Tunes-esque bait trail of MS2 or MS3 seals would work if they're not immediately going for the capacitor rune.

If this doesn't work at all then we tried, and it's time to kill 'em. Ah well.

I'm not interested is trying to study these things.

We have no expertise containing beasts Noburi can't drain, they're invisible and intangible(?), they can cause direct damage to chakra coils. We have no skill in studying chakra beasts.

This just too dangerous. Toad Sages or no. The same TS who told us never to summon them under any circumstances -- it does not matter if Noburi is dying. Also the same TS that cost 1.5X Noburi's reserves (3000 CP), more chakra than the team generates in a day to summon them for an hour, then 1000 CP each hour to keep them here.

It's not going in my plan, it's incredibly risky.
