On the flip side, it'll now be up to @eaglejarl to write the internal monologue of a teenage boy musing about his crush, so the next update might be quite funny.

PLOT TWIST: It takes place from the surprisingly-insightful point of view of Kagome as Hazou spews verbal word vomit all over his mentor. Kagome has a heartfelt talk with his student/son, brings some much-valued perspective on the whole thing, and helps Hazou out. (Seriously, anytime Kagome talks about something that's not paranoia or seal-based, it's like he's channeling goddamned Uncle Iroh... I love it!)

EDIT: Also, @Velorien, I know it might not mean much --considering talk is cheap and it's from an internet stranger at that --but I hope you feel better soon. Thoughts, prayers, vibes, and well wishes out to you and yours!

All off Kagome's time is currently taken up by decoding Jiraiya's intelligence notes . Hazou is still grounded for another 29 days so can't do any research till after the contest. So no explosive armor in the immediate future

"Hey boss, y'know how we convinced Jiraiya and your father to permit the impossible by revolutionizing warfare to Leaf's benefit? We have another promising idea along those lines. Any chance we could exchange some Kagome-time for state-cryptographers-sworn-to-secrecy-time?"

Note that this process should start with Hazō saying, "Hey, sensei, you know those directional explosives that are your personal masterwork, the unique seal that is your trump card and the essence of your combat style? How do you feel about sharing those with everyone in Leaf?"

*Grumble grumble*

Fine, y'know what we do have all to ourselves? Directional aerosol emitters. Most threats don't better appreciate being suddenly covered in 200kg of hundreds-of-kilometers-a-second molten ferrosilicon/LOx emissions. I'll need to work some more solid numbers to figure out if yellow-emission Fe2+ or green-emission Fe3+ ions would predominate in the result, but "Golden Shower", "Lemon Surprise", and "Fountain of Youth", are all similarly appealing names.

Actually, we could probably dope in some calcium and lithium sulfate. "Orange Sunrise" has a poetic ring to it.

How much do the pangolins pay for life-size glass figurines?

Chakra beast extermination.

Clever. Who thought of that?

Daily reminder that almost no ones cares about civilians in Ninja society and that no one care about civilians as far as pragmatic concern are involved.
"Civilians? Are you telling me they are actually useful?"

On one hand, pretty good results. On the other, if we're going for 4-5 infiltration and search missions in hostile territory back to back, we kinda need a plan to not die and find the shiny.

Daily reminder that Wakahisa + Summoning Scroll = ridiculous profit.

I'm not sure that the Elemental Nations has the chemistry knowledge required. Between fuuinjutsu and medical techniques, knowledge of the sciences are a little scattered.

Are we allowed to vote?

I think we're still using the last action plan. We might be able to talk about the next action plan, though anything we come up with might have to be adjusted by revelations/actions/stuff in this coming chapter.

By default QMs only count votes from the latest update, which right now is the Chosen for the Graves Chapter

Do sidestories count in that? Because if we go by the "canon" chapters, then the last one would be Hazou's Negotiation chapter. I think we're still using the action plan that was voted in after that update, but before the Chosen Graves sidestory update.

Chakra beast extermination.

"Why hasn't someone else thought of that or done that?"

I doubt it's that simple, or else the people of ninja-earth would have already done that. Could be a number of reasons why they haven't, maybe the most powerful beasts eat weaker beasts instead of humans? So killing most of the weaker/moderate ones invites the stronger ones to target human settelments?

That snake on the island needed a strong chunnin (or a team of chunnin) to handle and the creatures in the swamp of death were able to kill chunnin too.

Tsunade did tell us to build walls, not to go killing more animals after all.

Let's not trigger a mass migration of S-rank chakra monsters or something like this. I do know that sky-seals and bloodline tricks change a lot, but let's not get overconfident, skysquids are real and they might drop Zetsu's.

We could probably finance some civilians to do the alchemist thing. Fiddle around with chemicals/different chemical processes and write down what happens. If the EN truly hasn't put much effort into chemistry (I think that's possible considering jutsu and sealing, but maybe unlikely since if that were the case I think technology would be more primitive) then they could probably find some useful discoveries.

One point in favor of the EN having low hanging fruit with regards to chemistry/non-medical biology is that historically the people who did science were the people who were rich enough to have time on their hands and finance their own experiments. In the EN, that's ninja. And ninja have technique hacking and sealing if they want to play around with the laws of reality. Ninja especially don't think about things like how to get crops to grow better, or what is this weird blight that's growing on all the crops. I think that areas like chemistry and agriculture could benefit a lot from a couple of educated civilians being paid to sit down and putter around with chemistry or growing food better.

We could basically do the same thing we're doing with skysliders. Guide them towards areas we know will bear fruit, and get them to hypothesize about what kind of underlying principles may be responsible.

They have thought of it. Chakra beast extermination is a common mission that ninjas do. We did one shortly before the chunin exams. The difference is that everyone else doesn't have our capacity to do it at scale. With summons plus a Wakahisa, we can easily wipe out the chakra beasts in a large area without difficulty.

I assumed that he wanted something more than: Introduce it as a mission. Because that wouldn't be a new game breaking idea.

Also there are a lot of Wakahisa in Mist and their Island('s?) aren't chakra beast free. Keiko once mentioned to roughly know where there are safe zones:

"Settled areas are cleared of the more threatening chakra beasts," Kei said, visualising the Mori safety map of the Water Country. "Danger increases proportionally to distance from centres of civilisation, as the risk of losing ninja in extermination missions progressively outweighs the reward of protecting civilian settlements. This is one reason why even missing-nin do not choose to settle in the more remote corners of the world.

Huh. I honestly hadn't thought about that possibility. This seems like something that would be common enough knowledge amongst the older ninja. We could ask... (*runs through mental list*) Uh... Huh. Is there an adult Leaf nin that we haven't antagonized?

I'd be okay with that. Gather a bunch of intelligent people (or just those with critical thinking skills) and throw them at a problem with enough money to drown in. And with our Goketsu Educational Departments up and running, we should see a rise in educated/specialized labor. I can only think of two issues with this plan, though:
  1. Technology.
    1. Alchemy and Chemistry would need things like alembics, test tubes, controlled fires, and whatnot. While the controlled fire could probably be accomplished with basic fire techniques --I'd imagine that there's a genin level kanton jutsu that's basically just "moderate this small fire to get a handle for controlling elemental chakra." But for the test tubes, alembics, and whatnot? That would need shaped glass. And telescopes are horrifically expensive, so I'd imagine that scientific-grade equipment would be equally (if not more so) expensive.
  2. Money
    1. We're coasting on Jiraiya's stupidly-prolific dragon hoard. And for all of his roles that he had in the Leaf, it makes sense that he'd have enough wealth to rival Cassius, especially if Jiraiya was even moderately frugal during his lifetime --which I'd say that he was, if only because he didn't have a lot of free time to be anything other than frugal. But if we start dumping obscene amounts of wealth on shaped glass, research tools, and Uplift Experiments (which I'm all for), then we're going to need to get some sources of income up and running.
    2. Yes, the QMs don't want to make this a numbers game or an economic sim, but they've also dropped some hints that we need to do this to keep narrative cohesion steady. And if we start burning mountains of money, then that's a good opportunity (from a meta-perspective) to throw consequences at us.
      1. We've already got ideas like the Saltstacks, Citrus Trade, Lumber, and the Aquifer bouncing around. Some of them have already been partially implemented!

[X] action plan: follow the previous Plan

Asuma
  • Hazou is the Mizukage's nephew. Asuma's welcome to use that fact, there's little love lost there.
  • Would it help for Hazou to intercede on Ami's behalf?
  • Would Asuma permit Hazou to write to his mother? Personal matters only, and no objection to contents being read.
  • Hazou would like Asuma's permission to negotiate with Yasuji. Asuma gets progress reports and veto rights.
Yasuji
  • Only negotiate if Asuma approves. Discuss with Mari before.
  • Goal: Work towards a deal. We do want a lasting barrel for Noburi and the koi.
  • Method: Be friendly and straightforward, but treat him seriously. You'd like to assemble an offer the Wakahisa would accept.
  • Have breakfast together and then talk to him in private.
  • Suggest trading/selling the defensive coverings for Noburi's barrel.
Akane introspection
  • Take time to think about re-igniting the relationship with Akane.
  • Akane didn't just break up with Hazou due to agency issues. She also mentioned:
    • The imbalance of power between them
    • Wanting to be her own person, not just an extension of Hazou's will
  • Akane claimed Hazou has changed. Has he changed enough to invalidate these reasons? He's gained even more power over her since.
  • Rethinks what Hazou knows about Akane, from the beginning
    • She's strong, bright, optimistic, and never falters. It wasn't always so, though, according to her.
    • She yearns for purpose and dedicates herself to causes - Youth, being Hazou's apprentice, the team, Uplift, Leaf. She almost killed herself not wanting to slow you down. She's desperately, unreasonably loyal.
    • It's a bit sad, put like that. As if she herself, and her own life, always matter less. When Hazou originally confessed his feelings, she responded by saying she wasn't good enough for him. How can she be so bright and strong, yet value herself so little?
    • Being together again can only be as equals. Hazou needs to see Akane as a person with agency. But she needs to see herself as valuable and worthy. Like with Keiko, agency is a two-way street.
  • What was she going to say, before leaving for the tournament finals? How'd Akane become Tsunade's apprentice anyway? Maybe ask Mari, somehow you have a bad feeling about this.
Mari
  • Bring her some chocolate. She deserves it.
  • Relay your thoughts about Akane, and ask for advice.
  • Ask what happened while you were gone for the tournament.
  • In her honest opinion, does the clan need for Hazou to marry politically

Mist doesn't have any summoners, otherwise we would be trying to get in touch with them to set up summoner-assisted trading/communications. Since we haven't heard of Mist losing any summoning scrolls recently, that implies that they haven't had any for a while. The Wakahisa might also not have wanted to cast too much of a spotlight on themselves when there was a summoner, since that would paint them as massive targets.
