Or we could use Panashe, Sakura, or similar high-Awareness individuals with good enough Stealth. We'd just keep the low-Stealth teams underground, with the high-Stealth individuals peeking at the entrances to the tunnels.

I to think Hunter killer teams would be better. Have Ino/communication pangolin to coordinate with Neji/Panache. Then use fire log macerators to force them into confrontation with our main force

[] Action Plan: Twelve Ninjas Leading

I believe now that using tunnels is impractical due to the chakra demands of jutsus that would let the tunnel team see what's going on with the surface. Therefore switching to this.

We don't know if Ino has that technique and Keiko is reluctant to use more Pangolin, but I like the macerator idea, maybe we could use Panashe to use earbuster seals near enemy teams to cause further chaos? (we could use wire to put protection around her ears)

I do not know if Ino has access to mass telepathy jutsu (@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail ???) but Keiko doesn't want to reveal the Communication Pangolin; I'm not sure if this would work. That being said I'm not against the idea of having us move as a 12-man moving squad to wipe out teams, if we can figure out how to deal with our low Stealth levels.

Have you given thought to having Panashe and naturally high-Awareness individuals observe from the tunnel entrance(s)? I'm currently writing a thing that has people like Sakura, who have high Awareness and decent Stealth, to observe from there and signal the underground team that enemies are approaching.

Different idea:

Cut a tiny hole straight into the underground tunnel. Have an LBF going from just above the surface and into the main tunnel itself, ending in an deactivated Party Trick Seal (if that's possible). Then, when the team-to-be ambushed is in position, someone with high Weapons skills "accidentally" misses the ambushing team and hits the LBF, triggering the attack.

So you of all people want to be a dick to him? It will take time and effort but we can definitely become friendly if we show him some respect
Oh, no, I didn't say I wanted to be a dick to him. I just said that there's a good reason to treat him as one in here -- there is evidence that he is not prosocial in his behaviour. I absolutely want Hazou to make nice with him, but he is a jerk, and it's a bad idea to ignore that :p

I just realized something.

Neji's Byakugan costs 22CP.

For one minute of use.

Like...holy shit, going underground almost requires Neji's Byakugan to be used for long periods of time, but 3hr is thousands of CP.
It's entirely unnecessary for it to be always-active, though.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail Is it possible to "channel" the Byakugan such that it requires 22 chakra over the whole minute instead of 22 up front? It wouldn't be useful in combat that way, but it could be used off and on while scouting?...

Still, we could just have Panashe as our advance warning that someone's coming.

I don't like it. That's a very limited range of view, and it would be all too easy to miss teams coming through.

Too, it makes us very vulnerable. Suppose the enemy team wins initiative and plants a MEW blocking the entrance before everyone gets out of the tunnel? It seems to me that we're risking getting our forces split and giving up the advantage of numbers that is the entire point here.

Look, I'm going to go back to "we're trying to coordinate a big team the majority of which has no experience with tunnel ambushes". I know it's temping; I was tempted too. I'm starting to see that there are too many ways for it to go wrong, though. We have twelve strong ninjas working together. We can afford to hunt like a raptor, swooping in on prey we spot, rather than a sand lion hiding in a pit and waiting for prey to approach.

Honestly if we aren't willing to use the communication pangolin in this situation we will never do it. Coordinate large groups is why we want it.

WTF is a "communication pangolin" and can you point me to the stats on how one works?

So clarification: You want us to chase after teams? Because I'm not entirely against it, though I would admit it's a bit worrisome if our low Stealth screws our chase.

Wait, why are we talking about tunnel ambushes? Why not just have Hazou bury everyone in mud (etc.) and then hide himself with excavation technique?

e:

Ultimately that depends on the chakra bullshit involved. Others may have appropriate sensory abilities. Regular senses aren't going to be able to notice you though, no.
Reminder that Normal senses wouldn't hit us at all.

Yes, I'm thinking so.

Not sure why our Stealth is important here. Surely it's our Alertness versus opponent's Stealth that matters? We start a sweeping patrol, moving back and forth, trying to spot opponents attempting to sneak by. It's not about them spotting us; it's about us spotting them. When we do, we sweep in with goo bombs and blocks to prevent them from fleeing, then beat them up. We don't get the advantage of surprise; but we can win anyway. That's the trade-off of small groups versus large groups.

The nice thing is if we are working as hunter/killer teams we get to decide if we engage or not. We have the initiative. Also remember we have 5 special Jounin level fighters on our team

Point. I'll start writing a thing.

Ehhh... I feel like we being buried under a thin layer of dirt/mud to ambush people is more than effective enough.

Seems like overkill to me, and we don't have anyone spotting for incoming trouble. At minimum, if we're going to have three teams participating in the ambush, the fourth team should do something useful, and not sit there twiddling their thumbs. My plan was really just taking this idea and making it a bit more flexible.

Over...kill? What is that? I know what's 'not dead', I know the opposite - 'just-enough-kill', but what's overkill?

No password stuff done explicitly but I'd imagine they were done during the last few updates off-screen, seems nonsensical to not make them when we first meet up.

Suppose one of our people gets maimed or actually killed. Still nonlethal?

I really dislike how you guys are excessively negative about Neji. He hasn't actually done anything unhelpful and has always been convinced to go along with our plan

Would be pretty hillarious if Uplift-faction plans were foiled by Hyuga because they felt like sniping at Neji that one time though.

[X] Action Plan: Hunt like Raptors

General:
  • Keep in mind OPSEC. We don't talk about Vampiric Dew, or Pangolins/seals (save for those revealed beforehand).
  • Discuss the plan with teams, especially Keiko and Nara (and team leaders). Make changes as necessary.
  • Accept the leadership position.
    • Thank Nara for believing that we'd be a good leader for the teams.
      • E.g., "It's a generous offer and I would like to say thank you for having such faith in my skills".
    • Ask the other teams if they are okay with this arrangement and if they have any concerns or objections, and if they're willing to accept you as leader.
    • If they're OK with it then accept the position
    • If they're not suggest that Nara lead and we just take up an advisory position (at which point everything below becomes a suggestion).
    • Once settled, outline the ambush plan and ask if there are any questions/comments/concerns; listen and adjust plan as necessary. Make special note to team leaders (Akane, Nara, Hyuga) and our team (Keiko, Noburi).
  • Communication Questions:
    • Openly ask if anyone has any jutsus or abilities that they are prepared to reveal that can facilitate communication. Special nod at Haruno and Ino. It would be a lot cleaner of an ambush if we had communication abilities.
    • If Keiko wants to bring up a communication-focused Pangolin summon, she can here. If she doesn't assume she has decided to keep it secret.
Make for the ambush site.
  • We've already gotten an approved evac plan, so we use that.
    • In any spare time between now and when it's time to go, Hazou can make some more seals to even out the numbers among the team.
  • As we move into the ambush area, keep in mind the possibility of other teams having a similar plan to ours (ambush people near the rendezvous). Make sure everyone is making Alertness checks.
    • Have Neji do a scan on arrival at the open meadow to look for ambushers who have already concealed themselves. If we find them, blitz them as our first targets.
  • Noburi should be draining various animals (chakra plants?) as possible, to keep up with chakra demands.
Go to the open meadow between the forest and the rally point ambush site.
Reasoning:
  • Long sightlines will ensure we don't miss potential targets. We don't have a lot of margin for error to defeat the necessary number of teams in the limited amount of time we have.
  • Twelve people are not going to be able to reliably make stealth checks. We can't rely on pulling off a successful surprise.
    • However there is enough cover that at least some of us can conceal ourselves, leaving enemy unsure as to how many of us there are.
  • We can potentially use the chakra-plants in our plans and Noburi can drain them for easy recharge.
Preparations:
  • Everyone:
    • Familiarizes themselves with the area, to gain an Aspect related to knowing the lay of the land.
    • A shallow shallow tunnel/pit near/into hill big enough to stack defeated enemies out of sight, dug by Panashe.
    • (With enough trust) Everyone gives Kawarimi permissions until the end of this Exam Stage.
    • Selects and chooses a spot to hide in. Be ready to move in on enemies once any member of our team spots prey.
      • Make stealth attempt, but don't count on everyone making a successful Stealth check. The enemy will likely see somebody; the question is how many of us they realize are there.
      • Spend a Fate Point for a declaration "Storage Seal full of Stealth Supplies" and pull out appropriate camo suits and make-up for everyone to wear to give an Aspect "Grasslands Camouflage" to help with stealth.
      • Positioning:
        • Form a front line of Setup and Strikers, with the next layer being Ranged, and the back layer being C&C. (See battle tactics for explanation of these roles.)
        • Setup and strikers in front line make a "V formation" (open end facing the forest) that can collapse inwards.
      • Use Silence Mines to help muffle sound from moving around in our hiding spots. (It might not help a lot, but every little bit could help.) Not set to a level where we can't hear warning shouts and signals, though.
    • Keep on alert.
      • If enemy tries to sneak by, closest person becomes point of wedge to take them on.
        • We don't have a means of mass communication (unless someone else came up with one), so if a sneaking enemy is spotted any members of our group spotting them are authorized to start the ambush and everyone else moves in to support.
      • If the enemy spots some of us and charges in, swarm them.
      • If the enemy spots some of us, and tries to reverse course to flee, goo bomb them to pin them down as we swarm them.
      • If enemy isn't using stealth and somehow hasn't seen us, hit them when they get to the center of the envelopment.
  • Individuals:
    • Noburi: Refills everyone who uses chakra, and get chakra from ambient life.
    • Keiko: Summons Panashe, who hides herself in preparation for lookout contingency as described below.
      • Keiko reminds Panashe about the no-killing, no-permanent-damage rules (seriously, she was bloodthirsty in her showing).
Hunting like raptors:
  • General rules:
    • Nonlethal only, as if it has to be said. Be fast, be efficient, (if possible) be quiet about it.
    • Advise everyone that Noburi can recharge us with chakra taken from enemies, but it will take a couple of minutes to drain and for everyone to drink
      • Ration out use of chakra based on the idea we might have two fights in a row with no chance for recharge depending on timing.
  • When we spot a team, move in on them as a group.
    • If more than three enemies are around at once, Keiko Ten-Ten, and whomever is third best at thrown weapons tosses goo bomb seals at half of them to slow them down while we engage the other half.
  • Tactics:
    • Team is divided up into Setup, Strikers, Ranged, and C&C (note that assignments below are subject to discussion if team members feel that Hazou has misjudged or does not understand their abilities, and GMs should adjust for reasonable NPC arguments)
      • Setup: Noburi, Haru, and Choji. Their assignment is to look for opportunities to set up the enemy to be taken out by the Strikers, stop the enemy from fleeing, or to join in with Strikers as makes sense.
        • GMs should make judgement calls based on nature of enemy. If there's a weapons-user, it might be worthwhile to do a Maneuver such as Disarm to place an Aspect such as "Disarmed". If there is a Wakahisa around, Team Setup would attack his Barrel. Or maybe something to stomp out a jutsu. If they create an Aspect with a Maneuver, pass the free tag to team Strikers.
        • If the enemy looks like they want to flee, a Team Set-Up member would do a Block to hold them in place.
        • If it's just a boring ninja using boring taijutsu and Team Set-up sees no opportunity to do a helpful Maneuver, maybe they just do a straight-up attack.
        • In the event one of them is injured or out of position, Hazou can slide up to become the third Setup.
          • In the event we are facing multiple teams and can no longer easily outnumber opponents, Shikamaru in C&C can make the judgment call to have the Setup turn into Strikers and concentrate on making sure all enemies are covered.
      • Strikers: Hazou, Neji, Lee, and Akane. Their assignment is to get in close and hit their opponents with taijutsu to do damage.
      • Ranged: Keiko, Tenten. Their assignment is to use goo bombs and thrown weapons against enemies who have some sort of jutsu or ability allowing them to stay out of melee or attempting to flee.
        • Also lock down excess opponents with goo bombs if we're fighting multiple teams or a team with elemental clones or something of that sort.
        • When there's nothing more urgent, they can just attack with thrown weapons.
      • C&C: Shikamaru, Ino, Sakura. Their assignment is to maintain greater battlefield awareness from the rear and use their special jutsu against the most dangerous opponents.
        • Examples of 'most dangerous' include a damaging aura that makes it impossible to engage in up close combat, some sort of overwhelming jutsu that can hit multiple opponents, and that sort of thing.
        • Shikamaru directs traffic, and Sakura takes responsibility for defending Ino's unconscious body if she uses her possession jutsu.
          • Make sure Sakura has some air dome seals for deployment on C&C group in an emergency.
    • Everyone concentrates on putting enemies down as quickly and silently as possible.
      • Silently means avoid usage of explosives or banshee seals unless enemy proves unexpectedly difficult and we aren't winning quickly.
    • Noburi drains all enemy ninjas of chakra during and after combat.
    • Seal usage:
      • Pass out goo bomb seals to the rest of the group and use them as needed to pin down opponents.
        • Give out the Kagome seals... no need to show the other teams the much more powerful Jiraiya goo bombs.
      • Use fire log macerators only as a last resort if enemies seem overwhelming and have already resorted to lethal force and we need to scatter/block them to preserve team lives.
  • Lookout Contingency:
    • Panashe stays out of regular combat and some distance in front of us, stealthed.
    • Her job is to keep on the look-out for another team attempting to ambush us while we're in the middle of a fight or alternately trying to sneak past us.
    • If she sees enemies inbound, and we're fighting, she lets us know by tossing some training explosive seals at them (if she's having trouble with/can't activate seals, she can just yell or make her own attack or something).
      • Ten-Ten and Keiko are to switch targets to goo bomb incomings identified by Panashe. Everyone else acts according to what makes sense for the tactical situation (if fighting is hot, keep on current opponents; if they're almost down, some of us can afford to peel off).
      • Shikamaru is the one responsible for assessing the tactical situation and directing traffic.
    • If it's an enemy trying to sneak by while we're in stealth mode. Panashe probably can imitate some sort of bird call or other nature sound that can act as a warning. She is a scout, after all.

Post-battle:
  • Loot enemies. Don't just take Night Light/Party Trick seals, grab combat seals, weapons, and VERY IMPORTANTLY their word-half from the First Stage of the Exams. You know, the ones that give us access to the next stage?
  • Have agreed-on procedure for downed enemies.
    • Whoever took down an enemy is responsible for looting and binding them.
    • Noburi chakra drains them.
    • Stash them in pre-dug tunnel so they're out of sight. (If this proves impractical, put them behind whatever cover is available.)
    • Report to Keiko how many seals secured so she can keep track and altert team when we have enough (as defined below).
  • Noburi tops us whoever used the most chakra with enemy team chakra.
  • But hustle to get back into position... the teams will be coming fast and furious in our very limited time window.
    • Goal is to reestablish stealth no more than two minutes after last enemy hits the floor.
  • Consider terrain. If meadow has become so torn up it no longer provides any cover, may need to advance to forest ambush site.
  • Currently every member of our 12 person team has about 34 seals.
    • We ideally want to increase this to 90 seals per person in order to get to the safe range. This means each of us needs 56 more seals, or ~672 seals more take from defeated enemies.
    • Hazou estimates this means we need to defeat about somewhere between 3 "strong teams" (210 to 240 seals among the team) or two strong teams and 4 to 6 weaker teams (30 to 60 seals among the weaker team).
    • Quit when each of the 12 of us has >80 seals... not worth risking another fight at that point.
    • If individuals get too injured to fight, make judgement calls about shuffling them out of further fighting.
  • Team C&C is responsible for tracking time and estimating how long we have on our half hour. If our half hour is about up and we still haven't hit quota, they call us come in to the rally point with what seals we have.

[X] Action Plan: Hunt like Raptors

@Briefvoice Things I'd change:
  • Tab everything under "Accept the leadership position". It looks awkward as is.
  • I'm not 100% on why Shikamaru suggested he and Neji be in the central position, but I'd suggest changing it. Have melee fighters (including Neji) be around the edges, and ranged fighters (Keiko, Shikamaru...) be more inwards (towards the rendezvous).
  • Silence Mines may be an acceptable loss of OPSEC, but Goo Bombs are NOT. Do not suggest them.

Bullshit eyes is why. I'd leave that be.
