On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

And those mirrors were explicitly a joint elf dwarf invention.
So it's an indeterminate time away but not soon, and we have no leads on where to begin whereas Secrets of Light is something we can start on next turn.

I agree it's probably what he imagined, but honestly is a visual inspection of the recipient more secure than a code only the recipient knows?
Codes can be cracked and people can be disguised, neither is perfect.
Perfect security would be a magic post box that drops a parcel that is runicly locked at the destination postbox instantly.
I figure the mirrors, being things that project images from distant places, is probably part of the Light chain. Not solely, if the elves were involved, but Secrets of Light acting as the dwarf side of things.

I think it's more likely that we complete wardstones into developing a dwarf scrying technique and that is used for this.
Your description of mirrors relies quite a lot on poetic descriptions rather than what light actually works like.

I feel like that as a runelord, the instructions need to be clearer and require further explanation as to the logic behind the steps.

I'm sure that's part of the fun that Snorri is having with it lol. The next decade will be those trying to decipher whether the recipe has secret layers to it or otherwise sending the giftgiver hatemail.

By the by, @soulcake, does my silly little post count for an omake?

Saw these questions and I figured I'll answer them now that Im on the post update cooldown.

Makes me wonder why no holds built inbetween. There are definitely high mountains there, so why no major settlements? Is it due to how Zornish culture works, disallowing expansion, until the ancestors came and explored the under way and founded holds so far away?

Is it because the mineral deposits there suck? I doubt greatly tbqh, I even would bet there is great amounts of quality stuff, including gromril.

Something we just won't know guess.

From the wiki article of Karag Orrud
Article:
"Red Cloud Mountain is the southernmost of the three great volcanoes of the World's Edge Mountains, along with Thunder Mountain and Fire Mountain. Earthquakes and tremors have hindered the Dwarfs from setting up mountain holds in the region. Enterprising Dwarf miners sometimes arrive in attempts to seek and extract the treasures of the earth revealed through volcanic activity, but few of these attempts last long, with most mines ending up being buried in ash or lava."

I also have the physical copy of the 6th ed Dwarf codex so I can corroborate that this is also said. Additionally the codex says there are many more, minor, volcanoes besides these three. So there are probably settlements there, but they're either temporary or small scale aside from the major Holds there.

I will note that I only found this out after making the settlement list, so don't think Im a clever cookie or anything, but its as good an explanation as any. Also for people confused about why Thunder Mountain is considered Southern when most maps have it close to Karaz a Karak, its because it seems like anything south of Everpeak are considered the old South of the Dwarf Empire. Codex also says that during the Time of Woes entire settlements were swallowed up when the already tempermental Volcanoes and tectonics of the region went haywire during that period, so thats nice?

Basically there is stuff there, but because I relied on canon maps I saw nothing there and didn't wanna add more work for myself, I later found out, in a stroke of serendipity, that the reason why nothing is there is because its volcanically active and prone to destroying most excavation efforts + the Time of Woes screwed this part of the Karaz Ankor over particularly hard. #Culture

@soulcake, in the past, when have the Runelord research Standing bonuses proven useful?

Rune Metal 5 progress, a lot of other research progress I just don't really bother to delineate, but despite appearing otherwise you are getting benefits from it. #Mechanics

I was talking about the magic mirrors in the books, not mirrors in general. As I understand it the magic mirrors basically work like a video call and I was being very literal when I said what I said.

And the basis of images is light so my logic goes light manipulation -> image manipulation -> video projected over distance, adding in sound from other work if necessary.

Devising Scrying from the anti-scrying of Wardstones is potentially possible but the logic to me looks like anti-scrying -> Invert it? -> scrying and there's a lot more uncertainty there in my opinion.

[Meme] A Matter of Perspective, +10 to a Roll
Part of the flaw with wind sight could be that it only has lenses for the 8 winds of magic.

Off the top of my head that already excludes dhar and maybe the one that is the 8 winds combined (that I can't remember the name of) as well as divine magic.

There are also different models of magic that might see thing's differently like the slanns magic or elementalists.

looks like image manipulation -> Invent scrying.
We both agree it needs to be done. However the mirrors of canon stopped working after 500 miles of water, they weren't using light manipulation to send the data, so everything else is either a wonky conceptual link with the concept of mirrors, or literally just the GUI.
By contrast mirrors are already a classic focus for scrying spells which should probably handle actual viewing and remote aspects, just leaving syncing them up and targeting as the problems to be solved. Honestly the more I've thought about this, its probably just Elven scrying with runecraft handling the other problems.
I agree its a jump to just invert anti scrying measures, but I really cannot stress that your feels like more of a jump.

...I wonder if any Runelords are working on creating Structural Runes that would enable mobile holds-on-wheels to roam the volcano regions.

The funny thing is that the first picture is Grombrindal and he's the reincarnation of Snorri Whitebeard. Snorri Whitebeard is very likely to be the one screaming at our Snorri shortly. It's not one or the other. It's both.

No more headpats from granpappy, big oofs all around

;-;
What Thungi meant: "When you finally lay your head down to rest. I'll judge the masterwork that was your life and all it's achievements."
What Snorri heard: "Sure. I'll take a look. Come back when it's done."

New goal: Create runic array to communicate with Thungi wherever he is.
Next step: Scrying & Ancestor detection.

Okay. Guess that's a matter of perspective then and we can put this to bed for now.

....imagine if all the ancestor gods disappeared but thugni shows up to our runeversity grand opening in front of everyone before disappearing around the corner?

Just wanted to say the research feels very visceral and cool to read. I might have some ideas of where you're heading with some of it (even if you'll probably prove me wrong) but it feels just logical enough that there's a path with suggestions on where to go next and like there are rules to learn and expect, but also open enough that we can't just vote 'do x' and be annoyed that snorri won't take the obvious path to where we need to be. It's fun and kindles that brain-tickle I enjoy in crunchier stuff that makes me imagine possibilities - in a similar way to Boney's quest actually, although that one is maybe more abstract and high-level where this one is a bit more in the guts of the process, and both are exciting in different ways. Thanks for writing it!

Not sure if someone has voiced something in this direction already, if so then apologies for the laziness of skipping discussion, but here's a stray thought. Part of me was very sad at the thought that we couldn't complete our memento collection now that the oldtimers are gone. We're still missing something from Morgrim after all. Then I went to check the Vault of Cool Things™️ and noticed that the warning counts as a memento and was written by "someone".

So the odd thought is as follows. What if it isn't Thungni like we've been assuming, but Morgrim instead?

We have samples of the handwriting of some Ancestors including Thungni. Yet the writer of the notes is still "someone" in the item description.

The "Results will be judged" warning?
Why the hell would that have been sent by Morgrim?

No if you something to whisper to yourself as you try not to cry yourself to sleep, the "Thanks for settling the bet" reciet is far more likely to Morgrims.

Do you think he was literally just judging us on the decor?
- [ ] Extravagant: +5 actions, ???, +1 Conservative and Radical Runesmith Standing. This. Now this is something you want to be known across more than just the Far North. A true Wonder of the realms, and an edifice of such fine Craftsmanship that even the most hidebound Conservative to the most revolutionary Radical can appreciate the efforts put into the structure, if not the purpose. Kraka Drakk will certainly appreciate the association.
All this time the ??? for Extravagant Aesthetics was about whether or not Thungni would think our halls were snazzy enough.

Unfortunately we were too busy in the wake of chaos tide to see morgrim to get our thing from him so we will have to do it the hard way. Get communication going to glittering realm and get him to sign a shirt after we rune out the first gun.
