On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Stop: Rule 3: Chill
Dude, you are just hurting your arguments with how insanely unreasonable you are. You talk about compromise but you absolutely refuse to do so. Further not helped in that you pretty much refuse to listen and see things from other perspectives. You refuse to accept the simple fact that people are just not really wanting to heavily focus on politics since that is not what this quest is about and your obsession with it just feels like chores/work for people which kind of defeats the reason people go on quests which is to have fun.

You are acting like a massive hypocrite complaining about about compromise and yet complaining about people not doing everything the way you want. Everyone else may disagree on things but at least most everyone here is trying to come up with a compromise unlike you.

rule 3: chill
I understand that you are frustrated with the vote and this argument, however the complaints about the vote and the tone of this argument are not acceptable. Please chill.

So. Next turn we finally go Apprentice hunting again?

Heck, I'm wondering if we won't end up with an Elf Apprentice at some point, given that was apparently a thing before everything went to hell in that relationship.

Well, I hope we get lucky with the Rune Combo on the Sky King's armor, since we'll have zero ability to confirm whether they're duds or not.

Any thoughts on what to put on it?

We won't because only people who are descended from Thurungi are able to practise runecraft.
So any elf who was able to was probably butterflied away by being old canon.
Or else they're just learning the theory but never actually doing it.

I think.
Also I'm pro apprentice but lets not count our chickens before they hatch. For all we know we're going to have another Greedy One disaster next turn.

Its annoying the Rule of pride doesn't allow for practice runs. Just knock it up in Iron first and if you don't like it figure out a new one.

I think actually going for themes might be a better bet, rather than trying with specific combinations. It's not something we've done much, but it seems marginally more likely to get us something unless we have a very specific combo we think is really likely.

Sure we will! We can use our first three actions of the turn to test combos, and say "if none of these turn into a combo, use X. If only one becomes a combo, use that. If there are multiple combos, please hold a sub-vote? Or failing that, choose the one that seems most appropriate."

As for what to put on the armor, I'm still holding out hope that KotS will give us some specifics on what he wants, at least once we've accepted the commission.

Snorri: This, beardling, is how you shape the metal and bond the..
Elf Apprentice: I'm a thousand years older than you.
Snorri: You're still a complete beardling in all areas that matter. You haven't even got a scruff a centenarian would be ashamed of.

I mean, I don't think that's how it's been done before? Still, even if soul does allow that, good luck getting a plan through that dedicates 3 of our limited actions to testing. Especially since I'm pretty sure we'll be required to complete the design part (part 1) of the armor next turn.

There *is* an action for practice runs - for combo testing. It just wasn't in anyone's plan.
Yes but thats not really ideal because it turns a two turn process into a three turn or more because we need to see the results..
What we really want is something like this

Code:
[ ] Design item. Repeat until combo is found.
-[ ] Design 1
--[ ] Runes
--[ ] Theme
-[ ] Design 2
--[ ] Runes
--[ ] Theme
-[ ] Design 3
--[ ] Runes
--[ ] Theme
-[ ] Use spare actions on _____
Because that allows us to test multiple designs without extending the process by a decade.

Oh, 3 was just a number at random. 2 or even 1 would still improve our odds.

That seems like such a timesink for very little reward besides some minmaxing

Yeah, I don't think we've even used the rune testing action once since it was introduced and honestly I'm decently confident we probably won't ever. It's just generally not that useful. Part of the problem is that... well it just sounds boring to read about so there are almost always going to more attractive options to choose over it and it's not like it guarantees that we find a combo so there's a decent chance that that narrative space just sort of ends up wasted. For very little mechanic or practical benefit. I think at this point, given that we don't know that many combos and most of the ones we do know don't play into the King of the Skies individual strengths going with themes is significantly more likely to get us something that will.

Yeah, like I said above that sounds like an incredibly boring turn to read.

I asked Soul yesterday if this kind of conditional plan was kosher and his response was, um, unenthused. He didn't outright say he was banning it but I don't think we should bet on having the option available.

For sets it's probably better to just have the gm roll for a theme. All the attempts so far to get a multi item combo have been duds so might as well just try rolling for it and if it works we can look at what runes ended up being used to refine later attempts.

So. Next turn we finally go Apprentice hunting again?

Heck, I'm wondering if we won't end up with an Elf Apprentice at some point, given that was apparently a thing before everything went to hell in that relationship.

I remember some popular quests having non-dwarf runes, like elfs and sky-titans (e.g.) having runes (or something similar) but I am very certain that having elf as apprentices for dwarf-style runes is impossible.

Hell, for some reason, only Thungni's descendants (though it seems that even distant indirect kinship counts, luckily) are capable of learning this particular style of rune-smithing, and not all dwarfs.

It's a matter of the right runes, so I can't see how.

IC, the research option might be something like, "despite literal centuries of experience, you can still find no rhyme or reason why some combinations of runes will form a sum greater than their parts, while others will not. This state of affairs bothers you. Time to fix it."

Snorri's greater understanding of the mechanics of rune combos would then translate into an intuition about which runes would combo - which would happen to be our OOC choices. It wouldn't be a guarantee or anything, just a mild increase in the odds.

Of course, it's all up to @soulcake, I'm just spitballing.

Still reading the quest and came across something that needs to be clarified.
Why are you people so obsessed with this? Isn't a tier 2 wonder enough? Also maybe? You cant overflow an action post completion, but like if something come sup that you can add to the murder maze you can overflow that.
A tier 2 wonder Is not enough.
Nowhere is safe. Defence. In. Depth.
