On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Not a fan of that combo but I think putting 2 actions on pt1 of the request is the way to go. Overflow should finish it right?

I should say I mean a 2-action axe. One on pt. 1, one on pt. 2. That's all it needs. Make it out of gromril, no special reagents. Just a test to see if the combo works that happens to leave you with a useful axe at the end.

After ten thousand years my internet is back! Now it's time to... post on the internet!

Hmm, it didn't mention Smednir that I remembered... I'd probably pair Smednir up with Fire rather than Cold at any rate. He's the smith after all, so Fire always feels appropriate.

I did find the posts that talked about the idea though!
We should probably give Gloin a weapon some time in the future. A twin to Trollslayer. Not now mind you we're fuckin busy.
If it was possible to make a combo with Master Rune of Currents and Rune of Cold (and a third), and if the Frost-Wyrms Blood could be used on the Cold, we literally have everything we need to make something much higher on the T4 scale than Trollslayer. Mind, it would be cool keeping up this dichotomy of fire and ice the king and heir have going now.
Eh, to me the idea of freezing something and then cutting it, or the reverse, doesn't really seem to work to me. When you freeze something it becomes harder and thus harder to cut. I would rather make a Warhammer that freezes the target then shatters them.

Something like, Master Rune of Breaking or Smiting + Rune of Cold + Rune of Impact or Might. A weapon that shatters whatever it strikes as though it were made of brittle glass.

I would prefer using the Master Rune of Everfrost and swapping the Rune of Cold for Impact or Might but we don't know it.
Breaking or Smiting + Rune of Cold + Rune of Impact or Might, was UlseDovThur's idea apparently.

And yes, it would be nice if we could have had the Master Rune of Frost, but sadly we don't.

... And if we got the Master Rune of Thunderbolts, then we'd be able to have a trio of elemental weapons! Conduction, Everfrost, Thunderbolts. Neat.

I'm with EVA-Saiyajin on the Master Rune of Currents and Rune of Cold and a third rune idea though. I do see MCurrents being able to work with cold. Perhaps Cleaving, maybe. Rune of Might might be a bit on-the-nose. But could work. (Cold + Might + Cleaving could work too. Or Striking instead of Cleaving.)

The Eldest of the Known.

Dolgi Bolgisson of Clan Scorrilling.
Bearer of the titles; The Undaunted, Embermane, Ruby-head, Crank-arm, Sky-Armourer, Griffonfriend. Alternative name amongst the Branakroki of He Who Girds the Many. Master Runesmith of Kraka Drakk. His skill with arming Griffons in the Craft is exceptional in all ways and his skill with the Engineering Runes for devices of Morgrim and Armor and Weapon Runes are all worthy of note. Not recorded as a member of any brotherhoods or orders. Currently living. Fifth apprentice of Snorri by age, trained alongside Fjolla Igunsdottir. Born 118 years Before Pillars. 330 years old. His beard is floor length and colored a bright ruby red shot through with silver, as if the metal was molten. Married to Klorah Silvereyes, Master Silversmith. No apprentices.

Every Smith has a Vault. It is known that Dolgi Bolgisson of Clan Scorrilling has made these exemplars of the Craft.
In his
Deed of Arming the Skies he gave many of the Branakroki armor and talons of metal and Runecraft and in that gained their eternal friendship and his name of He Who Girds the Many amongst them.
As his Journeyman's Work and sign of readiness to return he brought forth from raw metal the massive and finely made
Skyguard Plate, a suit of Pure Gromril destined for his greatest friend among the Griffons of the Stormpeak with these Runes upon it; Rune of Steel, Rune of Spelleating, Rune of Fortitude, and created a Combination called Gromril-like with them. This has resulted in the armour being far tougher than even its incredibly durable construction suggests, withstanding blows with little to no damage that would have ruined it otherwise.

Fjolla Igunsdottir of Clan Hrokisson, great-grand niece of Snorri Klausson.
Bearer of the titles; The Gemtouched, Firebrand, Goldy-Locks, Nimblefingers, Keen-eyed, Jewel-eyed, Glimmermaker. Master Runesmith of Kraka Drakk. She is a great worker and exceptional example of the Talismanic arts and learned in the depths of Gunbad the arts of Gem and Crystal from their masters, and in that place her worthy skill with Banner Runes saved many. Not recorded as a member of any brotherhoods or orders. Currently living. Sixth apprentice of Snorri by age, trained alongside Dolgi Bolgisson. Born 113 years Before Pillars. 325 years old. Her plaits are the gold of platinum and bound with gems in the manner of Gunbad. No apprentices.

Every Smith has a Vault. It is known that Fjolla Igunsdottir of Clan Hrokisson has made these exemplars of the Craft.
In her time at Gunbad she devised her Journeywoman's Work and sign of readiness to be a Talisman of great craft known as the
Maiden's Rebuke made with silver and a large and supremely fine piece of that place's Shining Stone. It bears these Runes; the Rune of Might, Rune of Parrying, Rune of Fury and through them created the Combination Spitestrike. When the bearer is struck, an equal amount of damage is flung back at the attacker.

Snerra Magnasdottir of Clan Winterhearth, niece of Snorri Klausson.
Bearer of the titles; The Shining One, Banner-maiden, the Smiling Smith. Master Runesmith of Kraka Drakk. A prodigy of centuries her exceptional skill with the Banner Runes surpasses all expectations for her age. Indeed she holds note worthy skill in all pillars and types of Runecraft, with exceptional skill in Talisman Runes and Armor Runes and only slightly more modest skill in the Weapon Runes and the Engineering Runes for devices of Morgrim. Not recorded as a member of any brotherhoods or orders. Currently living. Seventh apprentice of Snorri by age, trained alongside Fjolla Igunsdottir and Dolgi Bolgisson. Born 35 years Before Pillars. 238 years old. Her plaits are dark brown and reach just past her knees. In some tales her eyes glimmer like Brightstone in the firelight. She is notably kindly and cheerful.

Every Smith has a Vault. It is known that Snerra Magnasdottir of Clan Winterhearth has made these exemplars of the Craft.
In her first Deed of note Snerra of Clan Winterhearth gave great honor to Clan Bryggeroot and made for them a Banner to guard them in times of need.
But her sign of readiness was not one item, but three Masterworks, each enough to allow her back on their own but together a sign of greatness. First is the
Shield of Unyielding Stone, a stout Gromril shield wrought with fantastic prodigal skill and bearing the Rune of Steel, Rune of Spelleating and Rune of Fortitude to form Gromril-like.
The second was the
Queen's Oathplate a suit of Pure Gromril armor which feels as if they are moving about in a set of finely fit leathers its craft is so clever, and it bears the Rune of Spellbreaking, Rune of Warding and Rune of Stone to form the Combination Magic Breaker and much like its name implies it breaks down the spells of enemies and unmakes them by the energy of the Runes.
The third is a piece of legend, the
Shining Standard, a piece depicting the Ankor Bryn, that wonderful Glittering Realm and mystical source of all Runecraft. The Shining Standard bears the Rune of Spellbreaking, Rune of Spelleating, and the Rune of Thungni to form the Combination of the Glittering Beacon that acts as a center piece for the entire set of items. In its presence Runesmiths feel an intrinsic pull to the banner, the effects of the Runes they cast grow in strength and their ability to deny enemy magic magnified. With these three works all enemy magic is passively siphoned to empower the Banner, improving the bearer's own attempts to actively dispel hostile spells, and all of the energy is transferred to the banner until its effect can envelope an entire Army.

Known Apprentices of Snerra Magnasdottir of Clan Winterhearth

He bears an exceptional skill in both the Talismanic arts, and with the Craft of Runes upon Hammers learned at the foot of Runelord Gottri Logansson of Karak Azul, as well as worthy skill with the breadth of weapon runes. Considered one of the 'Hammerhanded', those who have passed through the many trials and tribulations of Gottri Logansson. Currently living. Eighth apprentice of Snorri by age, trained alongside Karstah Khazadsdottir. Born 100 years After Pillars. 253 years old. Beard is a pale grey braided in the loose northern style and just reaches the floor. No apprentices recorded.

Every Smith has a Vault. It is known that Nain Kazzarsson of Clan Stoneplate has made these exemplars of the Craft.
With the riches of knowledge gained in the tutelage of Gottri Logansson he forged Gorldrazh, the hammer of Dark Gold, as his Journeyman's Work and sign of readiness. It bears these Runes; the Rune of Gottri Hammerspite, the Rune of Strongarm, the Rune of Echoblow and strikes with them the Combination Anvilbreaker. The user's blows ring out like a bell or struck anvil, drawing strength from the foe they have struck, storing that energy and choosing whether to release it in one astounding blast or to have it rebound as a hit opposite of where the blow originally landed, pinning them between two great blows.

Karstah Khazadsdottir of Clan Winterhearth
Bearer of the titles; Drakksdottir, Snorrisdottir, Firemane. She bears one hidden title, Lenasdottir, the name of her mother now passed. In her way she follows the path of her master, bearing the honorable burden of exceptional skill in Productivity, skill of worthy note in the Odd and the Esoteric, the Weapon Runes, and the Armor Runes. Master Runesmith of Kraka Drakk. Not recorded as a member of any brotherhoods or orders. Currently living. Ninth apprentice of Snorri by age, trained alongside Nain Kazzarsson. Every Smith has a Vault. It is known that Karstah Khazadsdottir of Clan Winterhearth has made these exemplars of the Craft.
She traveled long in the West, and in the Black Mountains lived in Khazid Angazhar and learned a great many things of the Craft, pouring that accumulated knowledge into a fine suit of armor named Karin a Karak, the Shield of a Hold
, over the course of five years as her Journeywoman's Work. It bears these Runes: the Rune of Ironskin, the Rune of Fortitude, and the Rune of Iron, transforming the wearer with the Combination of Steelborn. The user's skin and bones become as hard as the strongest Azul steel, and thicker than armour with no loss in speed as their body shines with a metallic sheen.

May this wise lineage of Runesmiths be preserved from the cruelties of the World by the grace of Thungni and the Ancestors.

Even if Snerra is counted as a separate group from Dolgi and Fjolla, Karstah and Nain would still only be the seventh group at most. And all this is assuming none of the first four were paired up, which would bump Dolgi and Fjolla down to fourth or even third group and the later group(s) similarly.

Its a bit funky to number paired apprentices, who came first and all that ya know? So I'm treating each single apprentice as a group unto themselves, just with a single member.

But I get what you're talking about.

E: I think I'll edit it.

I think its been stated how many Paired apprentices Snorri already trained when he was talking with that other runelord.

Yep, here it is.
"Another pair must be a hassle. Only ever had to teach a fool youth one at a time, beyond my tolerance," she says.

"Mmm, it isn't for everyone aye. Third pair of them I've taught so I have a bit of experience with it. The first time is definitely the worst."
It seems Snorri's first "pair" of apprentices has some problems, though we dont know if it persisted past their apprenticeship. I do agree with lumping the Lost Apprentices together though.

It was probably Konna and Thorgrim since they are both described in the little paragraph that introduces their names that Konna competes with the Blacksmith Guild and Thorgrim would have been right behind her.

Ah. If Karstah and Nain are Snorri's third pair, then the first four apprentices were two singles and one pair, which makes Dolgi and Fjolla group 4, and Karstah and Nain group 6 (unless Snerra is counted as part of group 4, in which case this last pair are group 5).

If we wanted to number it by groups as actual groups, I think it'd be Konna and Thorgrim, Dolgi and Fjolla, and then Karstah and Nain. I think it's probably more sensible to organize by age and put down a note that they were trained with so and so apprentice.

Rather we not put too much focus on combos since it just slows us down. Should just focus on making good stuff and if it does combo where that's just a bonus.

It'd be much simpler to just invent a rune that explodes or releases a burst of flame or something on command.
I think it would be much harder to deal with the semi-random nature of a 4 rune blast - I'm also interested what the effects related to different runes are. Can do something that strips out enchantment and melts metal? When the rune of enduring fails, do we get a blast of accelerated decay?

Been thinking a bit about Runes and patterns that arise from them and what we've been told.

All Runes convey an idea. The first thought I had was that this idea must be specific and singular, with a limited scope. This is not the case. Consider the Rune of Fire and how it represents the idea of a fire. A variety of specific imagery can be imagined in one's mind like a campfire or blazing wildfire, but all of these contain multiple more specific concepts related to fire. It's heat, light, smoke and ability to transform ore into metal.

The difference between "a fire" and "the light of a fire".

The Rune of Transference, a component of the Master Rune of Conduction is very general. Transferring something, and from the context of what it is used in specifically the transference of energy. It's presence in the formation of the Master Rune of Conduction provides insight into one of the grammatical process of Rune Magic, in that if a single rune has a concept attached to it, adding more runes onto the item makes that image more and more specific.

The Master Rune of Conduction is made up of Fire, Force and Transference. And we see how it presents itself, as a rune that transfers, conducts, amplified heat and force into the target. Transference is about transferring energy, and it is cut down to very specific types of energy with the addition of two runes.

The Master Runes are where things get very specific, as seen in things like the Master Rune of Smiting. It is not just the Rune of Might turned up to eleven. It is specifically the action of smiting a target. The Master Rune of Spite is not just the Rune of Parrying, but specifically the concept of returning the damage twice, as one might spitefully strike back against one who harmed you.

The pattern that I noticed arises in our combos, connected by this conclusion that Runes convey ever more specific ideas.

It manifests itself in combos like Meteorfall or Stormfront. They very clearly describe a new concept that arises from the already specific concept of a Master Rune. In the case of Stormfront, it takes a blizzard and makes it a terrible hail and snowstorm, a horrific blackout storm you only see once every few decades or centuries. Thunder rocks the peaks it passes over and the valleys run with broken ice, dirt and shattered wood from forests it tears through. For the Master Rune of Conduction it takes an explosive blow and gives it the specificity of a meteor impact, building off of ideas that were already present.

This building off of an already present idea occurs with Combos that involve Master Runes, which makes sense because they are the most specific Runes Snorri knows. You can see it with any of our Combos that involve Master Runes in fact.

The Conversion combo provides an insight into a type of Combo that describes a process, some new and more specific idea than what its individual runes mean. Interestingly it also has what I would describe as two closely related combos, Adamant Maker where Spelleating is replaced by Purification, and Ancestral Aegis which functions to create a similar idea to conversion but replaces Spelleating and Warding with Master Rune of Grungni and Rune of Valaya. Notably Ancestral Aegis functions by basically defining a specific variation of the Master Rune of Grungni's effect using Rune of Valaya and Spellbreaking to hone in on the defense from magic ideas, and then amplifies that specific idea.

Which points out an interesting conclusion that you can achieve similar results using both patterns, which makes some sense because Master Runes are basically runic combos condensed and amplified to begin with.

All of this has had me wondering on the meaning of runes. Perhaps Master Rune of Conduction, Lightning, and Amplification, could make something about the specific loud explosion that transforms sand into glass when lightning strikes dirt. I'm also pondering if Lightning, Force and Amplification are what is needed for the Master Rune of Thunderbolts because Thunderbolts evokes a specific loud image of lightning closely tied to the clap of thunder.

@BungieONI You just basically reiterated the things in Rune Primer?

C. The more general the definition, the more metaphysical weight it has compared to more specific stuff.
Master Runes then are special because they encompass very complex concepts and ideas usually with a lot of extra stuff involved. Basically doing in one Rune what a Runic combo does in three, but better.
Even Rune of Fire and Rune of Conduction as examples.

And on 'extracting' a specific part of a general Rune idea, material compinents are used.
Now, theoretically, that Rune of Fire also encompasses fire hot enough to match a dragon, but that effect is harder to achieve because it's more specific than just fire in general, so if a runesmith wants that "definition" they use dragon bits to weigh the scales in its favour. Imparting the material's power to get the rune effect they want.

That was somewhat intentional yeah since I wanted to set a clear idea of where I was coming from when I got to talking about patterns I noticed in Combos and why it lead me to pondering certain potential future combos.

As for materials extracting a specific part its worth noting that paring down to more specific ideas does not necessarily require them, it just helps.

I think it would be much harder to deal with the semi-random nature of a 4 rune blast - I'm also interested what the effects related to different runes are. Can do something that strips out enchantment and melts metal? When the rune of enduring fails, do we get a blast of accelerated decay?
The difficulty setting up such an effect (scribing 3 fully functioning runes, figuring out a way to remotely chisel the last one, etc) far outweighs any benefits you'd get from it. It's sort of like a building a fully functional house purely so you can collapse it on people you dislike.

Random thought what if the new Draks blood can be reused for the smelters now
Yep. Thats a distinct possibility, since there is a possibility that the elder dragon blood also got Purified, which has a chance of making the Purification rune need less charge to make an Adamant bar.

Also there is a decent possibility that Purified Elder Dragon Blood is a necessary reagent to making that "beyond adamant" metal.

I find that very unlikely... much more probable that the blood contains metallic impurities. Not saying it isn't interesting to research, but i'm pretty certain it won't help with purification.
