I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Oof good point.
Rereading that bit... Did Gazul tell us he is dying? With the figure crumpling to the ground?
There was also mention of him spitting blood back after the fight with Astragoth Ironhand:
Baggroth did not see it at the moment, caught up as he was in his own thoughts, but had he looked closer he would have noted a red tint in the Ancestor's spit.
Combined with the "These embers still burn bright" modifier he gets I'm betting he was mortally wounded by Hashut and will die at some point in the future.

Yeah but those are out of character knowledge. The vision was seen by Snorri IC, which makes it a whole other kettle of fish.

You know... thinking about it, one of the coolest things you can see is the effects and consequences of your actions slash influence -- in a positive and constructive way, I mean. That is, when you can see that you have acted like an elder or ancestor... by the fact that you have inspired others to do things similarly to yourself.

Because when you see that, when you see the effects you have had on your students or descendants or the young... then you feel like an elder, an ancestor. And that feeling is cool.
So, what am I talking about here?

Well, the fact that Snorri made armor for the King of the Skies. ... And now... ... Well.

I wonder. If, Snorri will be privately chuffed and happy not just at one of his apprentices managing to pull off something impressive, at pulling off an impressive act of art and craftsmanship. But at the fact that he is seeing the youth do things. Tread paths. Ones both already trodden by an ancestor (Snorri and Thungni and then Snorri again, what with the first gifts of translators to the Griffons, then Thungni's to the King of the Skies, then Snorri with his armor to the kind) and yet ones now being trod by the young, too.

In one sense, I am sad that we never got to make cool armor for the Griffon Princes. But in another sense, I am happy to see a narrative and story -- a mythopoeia in a sense perhaps? -- unfolding, too. Especially because Dolgi had pre-existing history and connections with the Griffons. And was exceptionally good at armor. And now, because of those already existing factors and traits and qualities... he's helped advance the story, the mythology, of Kraka Drakk, of the North Dwarfs, a bit.

So it might be interesting/amusing to see Snorri indulge in ancestorese-ness; that is to say, him doing the "Finally the Beardlings figured it out and did it right. Took them long enough! Was worried I would have to do it myself and why, if it were me doing it, I would have..." thing.

As Terenas might say that the truest victory is stirring the hearts of your people, the truest victory is when you start to see the youngsters achieve victories/accomplishments and legends of their own. Hell, we've seen the young king -- now old King Otrek -- doing that. We've been seeing him doing that for several centuries now. And that, too, was cool.

When you do right; and when your students or the young of your Hold do right; both are really cool feelings.

... Of course, you know what that means, right?

It also means that it'll be up to us to show those youngsters something to reach for! ... Like Gromril Chainmail on the Valkyrie Guard. Or some super-Gronti. Or other things. Heh. It's tough to hit that balance. Of giving the youngsters enough room to have their own accomplishments and achievements. But also showing them heights they haven't reached yet... but which they might reach yet.

... Hell. Thinking about it...

It might actually be really cool if Snorri's usage of Kraka Drakk favor to really move the King (and probably Princes) to action... also results in Kraka Drakk and its royal family, also making great strides and efforts and tales as a result?

That is. Maybe future-King-Gloin will be known for forging tight ties with Karag Dum and/or building on the ties his father Otrek started with the other North Kings. Maybe Kraka Drakk and the rest of the North Kings, after the unity they showed together in clearing Norsca and then setting off to aid Karag Dum... maybe there will be a next step to the level of cooperation and interaction. Maybe seeing Kraka Drakk lead the charge in helping Karag Dum Dwarfs found a hold, leads to more North interactivity and trade, too.

... It can be interesting, to think about the possibility of your actions causing (positive, I mean!) ripples like that.

Both because positive consequences are cool and warm-feeling, and also because the world feels both more 'alive' when people do things too. And also more myth-like, when myths and stories spawn further myths and stories. Too, the world feels more alive when it feels like there is a lot of stuff going on and moving, and people moving and doing those things.

I've been thinking about the third combo item, what about a lantern?

In effect it could be used as a battery or more accurately capacitor, or for an aura/fate/ties/ward effect.

(I mean I'd also be fine with a magic beer stein or bag of holding xD)
(Snorri utterly dismayed by the lack of beer in Karag Dum proceeds to make an everfull flagon.)

Huh. A Lantern would be... a Talisman.

A battery, or capacitor, makes me think of the various Spell- runes (Spelleating, mostly) and Empowerment. Empowerment granting the ability to supercharge nearby runes. Hmm, how did Glittering Beacon manage to share a bit of power to other Runesmiths? Ah, with the Ancestor Rune of Thungni...

So perhaps... Spelleating, Empowerment, Thungni?

It doesn't necessarily have to have Spelleating, though. While Snerra's combo did have Spelleating in order to make Glittering Beacon, Zharrgal did not need to have Spelleating in order to be able to channel energy from Barak Azamar.

So perhaps we would just need to describe it as "A lantern that could channel and store Barak Azamar's power, and share/ transmit that energy to other Rune items or Runesmiths" and that would result in a rune combo that manages to pull it off. i.e. Words similar to how Zharrgal's initial pitch was worded, and yet it still ended up with an item that could channel.

Thungni and Empowerment... Thungni for every kind of runework. Empowerment for, well, transmitting power...

But what's the third Rune? The Master Rune of Waking, because it allows talismans to act under their own power and under pre-set conditions? And thus, we could potentially have the narrative for the cool and mythological end result of "Huh... it's almost as if it's doing it on its own." You know, that sort of cool item, where it almost but not quite has a will of its own, or not will rather but that it seeks to fulfill its purpose -- except this time, the purpose is helping Dwarfs and doing cool Runesmith-y stuff.

Master Rune of Animation/Waking, Necessary Ingredients: [T2] Troll's Heart: Allows talismans to act under its own power, activating effects on their own and under pre-set conditions with perfect control and timing without input.

The Gift Giver's Rune? Because it flushes out impure magic?

Master Rune of Purification/Snorri Gift Giver, Necessary Ingredients: [T4] Voidstone: Used to create Adamant, the Rune flushes out impure magic in a way that produces enough radiant heat energy to melt the Pure Gromril bar.

The Rune of Direction, for more command? If, that is, that Rune could allow the Lamp to provide directions to other Rune items. ... It might be more accurate to use a "Rune of Command" instead, come to think of it. There's probably something like a Rune of Command in Snorri's repertoire -- it's probably common for Talismans (like crowns or helmets) and Banners.

Rune of Direction: Wearer can interface with Runes that would otherwise require verbal commands solely through thought.

Warding? Spellburning? Spelleating? Spellbreaking? The Master Rune of Balance, which weakens enemy spells?

Or go a bit mystical, and make it a rune of Light or Fire -- because it's meant to be a lantern, after all, right? And because that way it could serve as either a connection to the Underearth and Gazul's Flame, or to the light of the Glittering Realm?

The Rune of Sorcery? (If that can be placed anywhere besides on an Anvil of Doom.) (Might also not be appropriate, as it'd empower magic rather than runes... then again, the Anvils of Doom are for runesmithing, not sorcery, so...) (... You know, that makes me realize something -- perhaps, when the Rune of Sorcery is discovered... Well. The Dwarfs won't just make the Anvils of Doom. They'll also make something to do with/for the Brana, too. Like a MGrungni + Rune of Sorcery artifact. Something meant to boost Brana spellcasting/ability/craft. Neat thought.)

------------------

Though, it would be cool if it were just simpler than that. Something like Thungni, Gazul, and Guidance. Or Thungni, Empowerment, and Fire or Light. Hm.
or for an aura/fate/ties/ward effect
Interesting but tricky. I mean, if it's a lantern, we can probably make it a Gazul-related artifact easily. And thus tie it in to endings and offering comfort to Dwarfs. Like with Gazul + Fire or Light + ??? (Guidance, or Warding, or Sanctuary, maybe). (Gazul + Fire + Sanctuary?)

Not sure how we could do fate and etc stuff though. Well I mean, obviously by putting the appropriate runes in (if/when we have them), but... Dunno how it'd work out.
(I mean I'd also be fine with a magic beer stein or bag of holding xD)

A magic bag of holding for Santa. Or a magic beer stein, for a Dwarfy Dwarf. Hehe.

I'm not sure I would trust empowerment to work like that without doing some kind of research into it. Its pretty explicitly a Gronti focused rune so I think we need to generalise it.
Also re Glittering Beacon. I don't think it transfers power like you think it does. The Rune of Thungni makes people produce better crafts probably by a placebo 'the Ancestors are watching me, better not dissapoint too much.'. Glitering Beacon makes runes cast stronger, not runed items. This is an important distinction as it seems to have just moved the skill bonus from making stuff to casting. Existing aren't affected so its not something to do with providing power.
Combo, Glittering Beacon: [Rune of Spellbreaking, Rune of Spelleating, Rune of Thungni]: [Runesmiths feel an intrinsic pull to the banner, the effects of the Runes they cast grow in strength and their ability to deny enemy magic magnified.]
Thungni is explicitly not a meta Rune enhancing Rune.
Thungni as the Ancestor of Runesmiths should mean His Rune improves Runes and their effects. Yet it does not.
However it may be part of the path to it.
I dunno if Waking is what we want here. It seems to just be an expensive way to apply the Rune of Direction. And most Rune items can be turned on and off at the users choice anyway. Soulcake gave the example of storing flaming axes as the reason why.
A cool take on the lantern would be as an unusual banner, rather than a talisman.
Frankly I think thats what people are writing it as, expecting that its going to buff everyone. Otherwise they must be under the assumption that BA is underpowered?

I sound like a broken record, but I want my material research.

Runemetal of course, but I want Hearthstones and Silver Wutroth even more

honestly my focus is rune metal B plus materials we can finish with 1 or 2 actions. rune metal B is just really cool to me so i want to focus on it

Look in the past, we've mostly only done material research when we've got an idea out of what we think we can get out of it.
So rather than just saying we should do it, perhaps you'd persuade more people if you could explain what runes you expect to get bonuses out of the research.

We probably should understand MPurification before we call in Brotherhood favor on the main gromril research branch. Not only would that mean Snorri would be making better MPurification runes, but the Brotherhood of Dron might have insights on the results of the Understanding.

I'd prefer to focus entirely on chain for the next few turns so we can give the Cult of Valaya armor with gromril chain, but I would not be too upset if we Understood MPurification.

Okay so based on the revised Standing 9 my vote for next turn is 1 action into places of the odd to finish that off as we did one this turn. And the other 2 actions into hearthstones to finish that off. The new bonus only removing one action is fine since most if not all places of the odd materials trigger Soul of Earth. Based on the new proc Zhufazul, whatever we get from 9 and 10 are the only ones that can have action reduced so I would avoid putting any actions into those until the proc triggers.

There are two odd places left. The 9th and the 10th.
The winning vote has us doing an odd place this turn which knocks out the 9th.

Odd places started at 1/10, the number on the update is the place number we are exploring. So this update we are exploring place 8, next update it will be down as 9/10 and if we take it we will explore place 9 leaving place 10 to explore. from turn 1:
[ ] Odd Places 1/10: Look on Master Yorri's map and try and discover one of his marked locations. The locations will certainly be odd, but whether they'll be useful remains to be seen. [Cost: 1 action] Roll for usefulness.
Personally, with the ability to spend brotherhood favour I'd like to just finish off Rune Metal 1b next turn with 3 actions +30 favour, that should hopefully give us a good idea of how long getting that research chain to the point we can produce gromril chain will take.

I am sure that I mentioned my reasoning before, but what the hell, I'll do it again.

Hearthstones, combined with "mere" pure gromril, and with only dedicated 2AP iirc provided a Tier 4 artefact, despite being a tier 2 mat.

This, coupled with Valaya's open and loud affinity for them (which should be a reason enough to want to research them imho) heavily suggests that there's a ton of potential mileage in artefact potency and knowledge in general to be gained by fully understanding Hearthstones, especially in the metaphysical concepts such as healing, protection and preserving.

Concepts, that I know the thread has already stated to be interested in.

You know, I just thought of something involving the Weapon version for Master Rune of Waking. @soulcake, is it possible to create a Dwarf version of The First Tsurugi from Final Fantasy 7?

As in a feat of engineering that incorporates 6 swords into one seventh sword, all of them runed. One, of course, would have MWaking, plus 2 other runes, while the other 5 would have their own runes, activated when disconnected from the base blade.

I wonder if something like a flail made in the shape of a miniature hydra would work with Waking?

Like trolls, hydras are hungry (lots of mouths), and regenerate.

The combo listed on Creations of note does not specify that Hearthstones were used as ingredients in any of those runes therefore I think, that was being used as a structural material not as a rune ingredient.
Structural Material These are Materials that offer no benefit to Runes but are worthy of noting down because they're useful to make the stuff you put Runes ON. The more esoteric effects will be minor and mostly visual for the purposes of this quest.
That we got a T4 out of it was probably the result of a very good roll on the unlock a combo combined with Snorri's speciality in Talismans.
The material science research is always about how to use it as a rune ingredient so this wouldn't affect it anyway.
I think Valayas interest is extremely over emphasised, it really seemed like a passing comment to remind Grugni of a small Karak, that as a craftsman the most memorable thing about the hold to him would be the things he could craft with.
we've gone from Zorn all the way up to that young place up north, whatsit called?"

"Kraka Drakk dear, the hold with those wonderful stones, and where this young lad is from. If you bothered to use those keen eyes on something other than your creations."

"That was it! Kraka Drakk, hmmph, well it's appropriate I suppose.
If we were purely following how strongly we were given hints by the ancestors, I think we would go Gazul Rune of Fate, Grugni Rune chain, Valayas Basket, Valaya's hearthstones.

Did you have reasoning for Silver Wuthroth? As thats the one I see the least value in I'm interested to hear why people care.

Probably not because I think that would involve more than three runes on an item. If you could cheese the system by being able to activate and deactive different sets of Runes I imagine that the Brotherhood of Dron would have stumbled across it already.

Soul's already confirmed we have three left: 8/10, 9/10, and 10/10.

No. I asked about something like this when it came to pieces of armor with different groups of three runes on them and Soul told me it just doesn't work, way back at the start of the thread.

MWaking, Fate, Striking.
Get a flail that actively reads the future and moves according to it to ensure that it never misses
I'm pretty sure a flail wouldn't work with Master Rune of Waking anyway, since there's nothing for the rune to animate to make the chain move. A limp chain does not make a suitable mechanism, soul I think already described this. It's not gonna suddenly make the flail head spin since there's no leverage to make it do that.

Master Rune of Waking is really more for a rifle or crossbow with some kind of self cocking and trigger mechanism than a melee weapon.

But what makes the mechanism a valid moveable thing with leverage?
If we were going to make this I think we'd use muscles rather than chains to enable it to move, since that seems more Gronti like than the mechanism I feel like its pretty likely to work and thats part of the reason that I like the Hydra idea.
A self cocking feature is an incredible waste of an MRune really, that could have been Currents or Thunderbolts or something.

The idea was to make it with the shape of a hydra, so it wouldn't really be a flail it would be a very small hydra gronti and thus able to move like a hydra would. I'm not really sure how well that would work as a weapon but it would be pretty amusing. I'd love to see a runelord whose weapons are all just miniature gronti they hit things with.
