On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

[X] Plan Almost Full Throttle

I love me shinies, but... an ounce of hesitation is worth a pound of suspicion.
I really don't want truly traditional Runesmiths to go beyond grumbling at us.

The far north is Norsca were our MC lives and the reason its call the far north i think is because it was not a part of then Underway for some time and it was way out of the way from the rest of Karaz Ankor, the North is the Northern part of the Worlds Edge Mountains
what current extent of far northern settlement right now?

So I might actually have a use the M.Waking (weapon) variant other than just as a curiosity. If we develop the ability to make gromril chain we could try slapping it on that to get animated gromril chains that we could use to capture useful magical beasties.

Same problem as with swords. They can't levitate/fly.
Right, but a chain can be thrown or whipped at an enemy and then wrap itself around them binding them and restricting their movement unlike a sword which can only flail and gets no advantage from the ability to move under its own power. Even on the floor a chain could move like a snake meaning it would still be a threat.

Imagine stopping at the edge of a really nasty beast's lair, and then quietly letting a bunch of enchanted Gromril chains slither out of a sack and into the cave; programmed to truss up the first non-Dawi they encounter that's larger than a certain size. Or hell, letting them loose in a Skaven warren, with Verminfate runes on them as well as being programmed to crush their prey to death instead of merely restrain them.

That's not the point. The rune needs the weapon to have actual moving, mechanical, parts to move.

Ok the only quote I can find from soulcake on it is this:
That is indeed the jist of it. The crossbow would be able to act as a mobile and independent sentry turret with enough individual agency to know friend from foe and follow orders but needs a mechanism for reloading that it can animate.

Valma was so preoccupied by whether she could she never bothered to ask, "Is this practical?"

You however may find some use for this Rune, but at the very least it gives you research progress + lowers the max amount of actions for a potential Understand a Master Rune option!
As I read it the mechanism is needed because it can't just levitate a nearby crossbow bolt into itself not because the rune can only animate mechanical parts. @soulcake would a chain work like I suggested?

It almost certainly wouldn't. The chain wrapping shit would be the same as sword levitating. There is no mechanism in chain that can be animated to perform something. You could probably animate harpoon with a chain and crank to pull it back tho.

But the only way it could operate the mechanism is if it can make parts of the weapon move in relation to each other, and if it can do that why can't it make links in a chain move relative to each other? If it can't do that what is the rune doing beside proving decoration to something Morgrim could have made?

Edit: Option three would be it can do it but the force applied is too weak to anything but operate controls for a mechanism that does the heavy lifting but nothing Soulcake said indicated that it was the rune's weakness that was causing the issue.

what do you mean by chain?
Like chain fed or a chain attached to the projectile?
Either way a mechanism is required, one to run the chain through or to pull the chain in after it got shot.

Like just making a chain and putting the rune on it so it can move like a snake. I guess I don't really understand how the rune is interacting with the physical world to achieve it's effect. When that crossbow you mentioned decides wether or not to shoot what is the rune physically doing to trigger the shot?

I think the intent here is maybe something like putting it on the winch of a crossbow or ballista so that once it fires it self cranks at a certain speed?

Essentially rune created reloading and so on

I really want to get into the guts of all that Elgi knowledge and give it a through shake
